Rare is it that we get a new cinematic feast from Academy Award-winning writer/director Spike Jonze and while today’s offerings may not be a new feature film, his new Apple Air Pods 4 commercial starring Pedro Pascal is sure to satiate fans for the time being. Set along a lively city block, the advertisement sees Pascal whisked from the cold doldrums of his winter existence and dropped into a music-filled fantasia bursting with bright red and yellow flowers. Highlighting the power of these new Air Pods to help escape everyday life, Pascal is seen dancing through the streets and mouthing along to the lyrics, as if part of his own musical. Watch the new commercial below.
Though many are aware of Jonze’s films, including “Being John Malkovich,” “Adaptation,” and “Her,” for which he won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, even more people are likely to have seen...

It’s time to look at the work of one of the greatest directors of our generation: Christopher Nolan. How big is Nolan these days? Interstellar, a movie which was never among the director’s top grossers, hit IMAX screens last week for its tenth anniversary, and screenings have been selling out constantly. The fact is – Nolan makes movies that belong on the big-screen, and he’s one of the few directors who’s arguably become his own franchise. For proof of that, one need only look at the fact that he’s planning a new movie, and the cast is jampacked with A-listers, because Everyone wants to work with Nolan.
A caveat – our Christopher Nolan movies ranked list is just one person’s opinion, and his work is divisive. Everyone has their favourites (and least favourites), so I’m hoping this ranking will open up some discussion in the comments below.

In its 38-year history, only 18 have gone on to win the Oscar. Last year, Hoyte Van Hoytema won the ASC for “Oppenheimer” and went on to win the Oscar.
In TV, winners included Robert Elswit for “Ripley.” Elswit won the Creative Art Emmy last year. Speaking with Variety for Inside the Frame, Elswit spoke about shooting the black and white limited series. He said, “Lighting was important. It needed to reflect who...

Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer, Dutch Language, Oscar-Winning Role, Method Acting (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Cillian Murphy didn’t just win an Oscar for Oppenheimer—he gave everything to the role. The Irish star went as far as learning 30,000 words of Dutch for a single scene.
Yes, thirty. Thousand. Words. All for a brief moment where J. Robert Oppenheimer lectures overseas. Murphy, known for his intense commitment, spent six months preparing for the film—longer than the actual 57-day shoot.
“You break it down and say, ‘Alright, we need to work on this today,’” he told NBC Insider, explaining his approach. “I used to set aside, ‘I’ll work on this for a week, and I’ll work on that for a week.’” He even got Oppenheimer’s cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, who is Dutch, to record lines for him. “I got him to record the Dutch into my phone,” Murphy said, using...

What do you do when you’ve been to the vast reaches of space, reversed the temporal flow, ventured into the dreamscape – and, most importantly, swept the Oscars? With a three-hour, doom-laden, politically-driven historical drama, no less? In the wake of Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan could do basically anything. His choice: go full Homer with an adaptation of epic Greek poem The Odyssey. It should add a new quiver to the legendary director’s bow – his first swords-and-sandals epic, possibly his first fantastical film, and one that brings him a new leading man.
With pre-production rapidly ramping up on Nolan’s next movie, here’s what we know so far:
Tom Holland is said to be the lead
It’s been a while since we’ve seen Tom Holland on our screens – following Uncharted and Apple TV drama The Crowded Room, he’s been treading the boards on the West End in Romeo & Juliet.

While the plot remains a closely guarded secret, the potential connections to “Interstellar” and the groundbreaking technology behind the film suggest that Nolan is once again poised to redefine the cinematic landscape.

"Oppenheimer" might have become the highest-grossing biopic of all time and the Dark Knight trilogy might have produced some of the most widely-celebrated superhero movies of all time, but Christopher Nolan's real emotional masterpiece is 2014's "Interstellar." The film stars Matthew McConaughey as a widower NASA pilot who agrees to lead an expedition to a black hole named Gargantua. Somehow, the film manages to be Nolan's most epic and spectacular effort while simultaneously being his most grounded and emotionally affecting. "Interstellar" stunned with its visual effects and ambitious, galaxy-spanning storytelling, but it remained fixed in the minds of viewers long after viewing for its touching story about a father inexorably drawn towards a higher calling who sacrifices being present for his daughter in the process.
Much has been written about how "Interstellar" is Nolan's most emotional film and a true outlier in his oeuvre as a result, but there...

Acclaimed cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema can now add a viral short film to his résumé.
The “Oppenheimer” Oscar winner, who is known for his Christopher Nolan collaborations with additional features “Interstellar,” “Tenet,” and “Dunkirk,” has shot a Volvo commercial for the brand with director Marcus Ibanez. Van Hoytema has also previously collaborated with Spike Jonze, James Gray, and Jordan Peele.
In the ad titled “Meet the new Volvo EX90,” the Dutch-Swedish cinematographer captures a woman whose life flashes before her eyes as she’s crossing the street and a Volvo driver narrowly misses running her over.
The tagline reads, “Sometimes the moments that never happen matter the most.”
Van Hoytema previously told IndieWire that he constantly is trying to reinvigorate the language of cinema.
“To a certain extent, I am always trying to come up with something new in my own eyes, but work methods are like tics,” Van Hoytema said.

After his well-deserved Oscar win for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, we have to imagine cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema will reteam with the director for his mysterious forthcoming feature, which has amassed a cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, and Robert Pattinson ahead of production early next year and release in July 2026. Few spy films delve into the murky waters of human psychology and institutional intrigue as masterfully as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Tomas Alfredson’s 2011 adaptation of John le Carré’s classic novel remains a towering achievement in the espionage genre, eschewing high-octane action for a meticulous, cerebral dissection of loyalty, betrayal, and the heavy toll of a life lived in shadows. This isn’t just a spy thriller—it’s a character-driven masterpiece that redefined the modern spy film.

In the digital age, traditional film cameras still hold a unique place in the hearts of many cinematographers, directors, and filmmakers. Amid the rapid technological advances in digital cinematography, classic film cameras like the Arriflex and Arricam remain popular, even among independent and large-scale productions. This article explores the enduring appeal of these iconic cameras, the advantages of film over digital, the technical differences between the Arriflex and Arricam, and why these cameras continue to thrive in an era dominated by digital and AI-driven filmmaking.

Ad Astra, one of Brad Pitt's most recent box office bombs, has found a new home on Hulu, and hopefully, it will get the love it deserves from TV viewers looking for their next hard sci-fi fix. The film released in 2019 cost an insane amount, $135.4 million, but it failed to gather enough at the box office to recover its production budget. According to Hulu (via Cbr), the streamer will be adding Ad Astra to their library starting November 1 as the spooky season ends, and streamers renew their catalogs.
The film was directed by James Gray from a script he co-wrote with Ethan Ross. Starring Brad Pitt (who also participated as a producer), Ad Astra follows Roy McBride, a major in a government organization who's forced to join a mission because it's a bit personal. There are energy surges coming from outer space, and they are a threat to humankind.

As per multiple reports, the Tom Holland (Spider-Man: No Way Home; Avengers: Endgame) has landed the lead role in Christopher Nolan's next epic movie, which is scheduled to begin shooting in early 2025, with an eye on a prime Summer 2026 release date.
The fan-favorite actor was reportedly at the top of Nolan's wish list for this project and will now co-star with Academy Award-winner Matt Damon (Jason Bourne; Ford v Ferrari), who is set to reunite with Nolan for the third time in his career, after the sci-fi thriller Interstellar and last year's Best Picture winner Oppenheimer.
Plot details on Nolan's latest film are being kept under wraps, but the film is rumored to be an action film and The Hollywood Reporter claims the setting is not present day. However, whether the film is set in the past or in the future remains a mystery.

At six of the last 11 Oscars, Best Cinematography has gone hand-in-hand with Best Director: Emmanuel Lubezki and Alfonso Cuaron for “Gravity” (2014); Lubezki and Alejandro G. Inarritu for both “Birdman” (2015) and “The Revenant” (2016); Linus Sandgren and Damien Chazelle for “La La Land” (2017); Cuaron doing double duty on “Roma” (2019) and Hoyte van Hoytema and Christopher Nolan for “Oppenheimer” (2024). Will that trend hold true this year? (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Cinematography.)
The academy usually regards award-winning cinematography as pretty pictures within an epic technical feat of filmmaking. While great lighting and framing are laudable on their own, having a movie that looks like it was difficult to shoot goes a long way to snagging an Oscar. Recent lensing winners “Avatar” (2009), “Inception” (2010), “Hugo” (2011), “Life of Pi” (2012), “Gravity” (2013), “Blade Runner 2049” (2018) and “1917” (2020) also took home the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

When Christopher Nolan was planning out what would become his masterpiece, Oppenheimer, he needed to figure out how to approach filming the two separate interrogation sequences that form the backbone of its narrative structure. Knowing that he had to find unique ways to continuously film inside two relatively un-exciting looking rooms, he and his cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema turned to films of the past for inspiration on sniffing out camera angles for enclosed spaces. One particular film jumped out at Nolan and Hoytema for how it constantly found new ways to spice up the same barren location, and immediately cited it as a major help in his visualizing how he'd approach his vital dialogue scenes. That film turned out to be The Hill, a grueling exercise in human cruelty, directed by Sidney Lumet in a way that thrums with an exacerbated heartbeat on the brink of collapse.

Beloved writer-director Jordan Peele added his long-awaited third film, Nope, to his collection in the summer of 2022. It is a sci-fi horror film that takes both of those genres to completely new and unprecedented places. Peele said about the film, Its a bigger adventure than Ive ever tried to tell. From a film perspective, by far my most ambitious. Teaming up with renowned cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema, the two created the first horror film to be shot on IMAX cameras. In typical Peele fashion, Nope induced awe into fans old and new, diverted and exceeded viewers expectations, and took over cultural discourse at the time, creating a slew of new conversations to be had about film and our relationship with it.

Although Christopher Nolan’s movies, and he himself as a director, are enigmas, those who study him closely have a way of knowing his true feelings. There’s a subtle but unmistakable indicator, and during the filming of Oppenheimer, Emily Blunt came to realize that Nolan’s demeanor, particularly his reactions to scenes, is often betrayed by the telltale changes in his hair.

Doing the math, it seems that IMAX film cameras have a foggy and unknown future. The next generation of IMAX film cameras is delayed, and the demand for shooting 15-perf has significantly reduced. These are our two cents.

Why do we think that there’s a delay in the release of the new IMAX film cameras? The reason is that those cameras were supposed to be operational in 2024 (this year). However, at this year’s Nab, IMAX has presented only the rendering of the prototype. Thus, there’s also a way to go till the cameras can be utilized on an actual shoot. All we have is these superficial computer graphic models and nothing more. At the Nab Show, IMAX stated: “We’re planning to build four of these to start...

Nolan's long career led to the success of Oppenheimer, which was a departure from his usual blockbusters. The movie borrows visual elements from Nolan's earlier works, showing his growth as a filmmaker over 25 years. Nolan's collaborations with Cillian Murphy, Ludwig Gransson and Hoyte van Hoytema all shaped Oppenheimer.
Christopher Nolan won his first Oscar for Oppenheimer, but this achievement is just the culmination of a long career which shaped him for greatness. Nolan's feature-length debut was in 1998, and each subsequent movie that he directed has contributed in some way to making him the filmmaker that he is today. He could not have made Oppenheimer without acquiring the skills that he has from his other projects.
Oppenheimer blew away all box office expectations last summer, and it combined this success with an awards-season hot streak. The biopic is an unusual project for Nolan in some ways, who so often creates action-packed blockbusters with original sci-fi concepts.

Following the global success of Oppenheimer and Dune: Part Two, Imax is looking forward to its biggest ever “filmed for Imax” slate in 2025, including at least 14 titles currently shooting with Imax film or Imax-certified digital cameras, which are due for release next year.
The company said today that the 2025 slate more than doubles any previous year in its history, as Hollywood and overseas filmmakers and studios increasingly create for its platform. (Scroll down for the full 2025 roster.)
The increase in Imax-focused production follows a run of historic box office success for films shot with its proprietary cameras despite its nearly 1,700 commercial locations accounting for less than 1% of total screens worldwide.
Recent highlights include over 20% of the global box office ($190M+) on Universal’s Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan shot the Oscar winner entirely with Imax film cameras. It’s the fifth highest grossing Imax movie of all time.

Imax is going big for 2025, unveiling on Thursday that it will release at least 14 titles in its “filmed for Imax” slate, features shot on Imax film or Imax-certified cameras, more than double that of any previous year.
Among the highlights going out on the wide-screen format will be Disney’s Captain America: Brave New World, The Fantastic Four, and Tron: Ares; Warner Bros.’ still-untitled Ryan Coogler/Michael B. Jordan feature and its DC release Superman; Paramount’s Mission: Impossible 8; and Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon. (See full slate with release dates below).
Earlier, Imax said that Francis Ford Coppola’s Cannes entry Megalopolis would get a global Imax release.
Imax is coming off the success of 2023 wide-screen releases such as Oppenheimer — which generated more than $190 million worldwide, some 20 percent of its overall gross, on Imax screens — and Dune: Part 2 (21 percent, $145 million). Oppenheimer was the fifth-highest-grossing Imax film of all time.

So we saw the 1st project of the Las Vegas Sphere, which is ‘Postcard from Earth’ directed and filmed by Darren Aronofsky on the Big Sky huge format 316MP18K camera. Defining it as an ‘IMAX on steroids’ would be an understatement.
Behind the scenes of Postcard from Earth. The Big Sky camera Sphere=IMAX on steroids
As fans of the huge canvas (=IMAX!), one of the first things we did when staying in Vegas was to go see the Sphere. YMCinema was among the first that write about this very special medium. Before waiting for a movie on it, we defined it as IMAX on steroids. However, after watching Darren Aronofsky’s Postcard from Earth, we can conclude that this definition is an understatement of this whole insane experience. The Sphere is not just a giant screen, but much more than that. Proportionally, it’s X20 the size of the largest IMAX.

The Trip To Baden-Baden didn’t go as planned.
Last summer, Imax CEO Rich Gelfond touched down in the German city for a conference of theater owners, looking to hype the blockbusters that were about to unspool on the company’s football-field-sized screens. But instead of excitement, Gelfond was greeted with outrage. “I was almost attacked,” he remembers, lifting his palm as if to ward off assailants.
All the sound and fury directed at Gelfond that day stemmed from a battle that had recently erupted in Hollywood between two top talents. At stake had been access to Imax’s screens: Tom Cruise and Christopher Nolan had both wanted them in July, among the busiest times for moviegoing.
But even Cruise, who had personally lobbied Gelfond to give his next “Mission: Impossible” tentpole a longer run, couldn’t outmaneuver Nolan. Nolan’s epic “Oppenheimer” was shot with Imax film cameras, which...

The Current Debate is a column that connects the dots between great writing about a topic in the wider film conversation.Oppenheimer.“If there’s a sense of disconnect between what’s on stage and the outside world,” Alison Willmore writes of the 96th Academy Awards in Vulture, “Hollywood’s always declared itself the kingdom of dreams.” That might well be true, but the ceremony’s ostrichlike indifference toward some of the issues dominating global headlines this year felt especially jarring. While pro-Palestine protesters outside the theater blocked traffic and held signs with messaging like, “What good is art that ignores genocide,” only Jonathan Glazer, director of the Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest (all films 2023 unless otherwise noted), which was crowned Best International Film, dared to address the bloodshed in Gaza and Israel. Per Time’s Judy Berman, his speech, which connected the unspeakable atrocities of the past to the horrors of today,...

The 2024 Oscars are behind us, and yet people remember this year’s ceremony quite well since it was one of the most exciting ones we have had in years. And adding a little bit more spice to the mix, Christopher Nolan, along with his cast and crew from Oppenheimer swept all of the most prestigious categories from the rest of the nominees, including the revered Best Picture award.
Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy on the sets of Oppenheimer
Thus, setting an example for generations to come, this film not only raised the bar on the critical scale through the eyes of critics and journalists but also managed to become a smashing success at the box office with a total grossing figure of $959 Million. This was the first time in almost a decade that an almost billion dollar movie managed to bag the Best Picture category.

Lily Gladstone losing Best Actress to Emma Stone was the biggest snub at the 2024 Oscars. Gladstone could win an Oscar for their performance in the upcoming sci-fi film The Memory Police, directed by Reed Morano and written by Charlie Kaufman, which would vindicate her Oscar snub. Gladstone's Best Actress Oscar loss comes down to the difference in tone and style between her and Stone's performances.
Lily Gladstone's upcoming sci-fi movie has a good chance of making up for her major snub at the 2024 Oscars. After an incredible year for film in 2023, the 2024 Oscars were truly a night to remember. After earning seven Academy Awards for his latest opus, Oppenheimer, everyone wants to know what Christopher Nolan will be doing next. The short answer, of course, is anything he wants. But, buried within a Variety report about how much the director earned for Oppenheimer is a juicy tidbit teasing he might be directing an adaptation of the classic ’60s series The Prisoner! Widely considered one of the greatest TV shows of all time, it starred Patrick McGoohan (who was also the creative mind behind the show) as an unnamed British spy dumped on an island prison for those who were too valuable to be allowed to roam free. Dubbed “The Village”, the former spies don’t have names, but are rather known by their numbers. He’s known as Number 6, with Number 2 being in charge of the never-seen Number 1. The series plays like a psychedelic, cerebral James Bond movie, meaning...

Oppenheimer dominated the 2024 Oscars, winning multiple awards. The film has grossed close to $1 billion worldwide, a major success. Christopher Nolan finally won Best Director and Best Picture after 26 years.
Oppenheimer was the big winner at the Oscars 2024, taking home multiple prizes and breaking several records in the process. Oppenheimer has been a dominant force ever since its release back in July 2023. An awards season unlike any other — during which the first simultaneous strikes of actors and writers in Hollywood history largely prevented campaigning by talent for months — came to an end Sunday night at the 96th Academy Awards.
As was widely expected, Oppenheimer dominated, winning seven Oscars — no film has won more since Slumdog Millionaire snagged eight, 15 years ago — including for best picture (Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas and Chuck Roven), director (Nolan), actor (Cillian Murphy, the category’s first Irish winner), supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema), film editing (Jennifer Lame) and original score (Lugwig Göransson).

Christopher Nolan can hear the music: Oppenheimer had a huge night at the 2024 Oscars, earning seven awards at the ceremony in Hollywood – including Best Picture, Directing for filmmaker Christopher Nolan, Actor In A Leading Role for Cillian Murphy, and Actor In A Supporting Role for Robert Downey Jr. It marks Nolan’s first Oscar win, for a three-hour bomb-based biopic that swept multiplexes through last summer.
Speaking on stage for his Directing win, Nolan noted how young an artform cinema remains, with so much potential for the future. “Movies are just over 100 years old. Imagine being 100 years into painting,” he said. “We don’t know where this incredible journey is going from here.” He also hailed Emma Thomas, “producer of all our films, and all our children. I love you.” Shortly after, Thomas repaid the favour as Oppenheimer won Best Picture. “The reason this movie was the movie it was,...
