“Churchill at War,” directed by Malcolm Venville, is a four-part documentary series attempting to uncover Winston Churchill’s complex involvement in World War II. Produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, the series combines repaired and colourized historical material with AI-generated narrations of Churchill’s works. This ambitious combination invites viewers to navigate the turbulent waters of political intrigue and moral quandaries.
At its foundation, the documentary series seeks to shed light on one of Britain’s most renowned personalities. Churchill is shown as both a national hero and a contentious leader, exemplifying the contrasts of his era. His courageous stand against Nazi aggression is commendable. Still, his actions reflect a worrying disdain for human suffering, calling into doubt leadership ethics.
This series develops into more than just a historical account; it is a philosophical investigation into courage, ambition, and the moral compromises that leaders must navigate. Churchill’s legacy resonates today,...

“I remember hearing music in my head since I was about three years old,” recalls Kurt Farquhar, the composer for The History Channel’s miniseries “Abraham Lincoln.” “It seemed weird to me, and as I was growing up it never really stopped. Music is going on in my head right now. It’s a lovely score. I wrote my first symphony when I was 12 years old.” Watch the exclusive interview with Farquhar above.

As electronic musician Dan Deacon has increasingly lent his talents to the big screen, it’s become more and more difficult to guess his next move. Between scoring inventive nonfiction features like “Rat Film” and “Time Trial,” Deacon has also found the time to contribute music to Francis Ford Coppola’s fascinating “Twixt” and Fisher Stevens and Malcolm Venville’s heart-pounding “And We Go Green.” His latest: Rebecca Stern’s “Well Groomed,” a flashy documentary about, of all things, the wild world of professional dog grooming.
Stern’s documentary, entirely scored by Deacon, premiered at SXSW in 2019, before working its way around the festival circuit, including screenings at Hot Docs, Montclair, Bentonville, RiverRun, Sarasota, and many more. Earlier this month, “Well Groomed” hit streaming, through HBO.
Per its official synopsis, it “explores the exuberant world of competitive dog grooming and follows the lives of dog owners who are challenging the definition of art.

Exclusive: As documentary films and series continue to escalate in prominence in this age of binge watching, here’s a package that is creating some excitement as it is shopped this week and next. Imagine Documentaries and Appian Way Productions have partnered to produce Timothy Leary: Follow Me to Freedom, a docuseries that draws upon Leary’s vast archives and is fueled by exclusive access to his longtime personal archivist, Michael Horowitz. When asked about the founding of Formula E, a motorsport circuit that uses only electric cars, its current leader, a former Spanish politician named Alejandro Agag, lights a stogie and tells the unvarnished truth. Advertisers were starting to cool to Formula One for environmental reasons, and Agag admits that business incentivized the development of Formula E more than concern for the air that he’s filling with cigar smoke. The confession reflects the ethos of “And We Go Green,” a documentary about the series’ fourth year that presents itself as a planet-conscious endorsement of clean-energy technology, but is mostly about the brash personalities competing for the championship. It’s the type of engaging-but-shallow sports doc that pops up frequently on streaming services, which seem the finish lines it will ultimately cross.

An official trailer has debuted for a new documentary titled And We Go Green, produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, and directed by his collaborator on Before the Flood, Fisher Stevens (and co-directed by Malcolm Venville). The doc film is a look at the creation of Formula E, and all-electric version of the world famous Formula 1 races, which uses all the same tracks and similar vehicles that are quiet because of no gas. The film features footage from Jean-Eric Vergne's championship-winning season. "The documentary encapsulates the true mission and purpose of the Abb Fia Formula E Championship, to show how competition drives technological development and how the excitement of sport can have a meaningful social impact and alter perceptions of electric vehicles." “And We Go Green,” a new documentary about electric street racing, will have its world debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Variety has learned.
The film is directed by Academy Award winner Fisher Stevens and Malcolm Venville. It is produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, who is in the South of France for the Cannes premiere of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” the Quentin Tarantino film he stars in alongside Brad Pitt.

Mainstream audiences might have noticed a lack of Keanu Reeves at theaters following the disappointing sci-fi blockbuster The Day The Earth Stood Still. But after taking some time to focus on smaller features like Malcolm Venville.s dramedy Henry.s Crime, the filmmaking documentary Side by Side and the New York-set indie Generation Um., Reeves is returning to the kind of action-packed thrillers that made him a 1990s megastar. The latest of these is John Wick, a revenge thriller that will mark the directing debut of David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, professional stunt men who both worked with Reeves in the Matrix trilogy. Deadline reports The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.s Michael Nyqvist, Game of Thrones. Alfie Allen, Friday Night Lights.s Adrianne Palicki and Dean Winters, best-known by 30 Rock fans as Dennis Duffy, have signed on to join the cast that also includes Willem Dafoe. In the original...

Keanu Reeves has gone from playing a cartoonishly embellished version of disaffected youth in Bill and Ted.s Excellent Adventure to playing a disaffected adult in a cartoonishly embellished fictional reality in The Matrix. Somewhere along the way, he saved public commuters from a cartoonishly embellished Dennis Hopper in Speed. And for his next film, his first since Malcolm Venville.s 2009 indie crime dramedy Henry.s Crime, Reeves will blow the roof off of his wheelhouse and play yet another disaffected adult in Generation Um., this time he.s spends a vice-filled day with two beautiful free-spirited women, so it.s very much within the boundaries of strict reality. Thanks to Apple, we have our first full look at the film in all of its mumbling, bumbling glory. Added bonus: Keanu himself introduces the clip in a manner where it isn.t even convincing that he had anything to do...

No doubt this has happened to you. Despite being voted “Most Nicest Guy” in high school, you’re in your 30s, stuck at dead end job, with no prospects in sight. Suddenly you get life’s wakeup call when you accidentally get involved in a failed bank heist thanks to Fisher Stevens. Then, when you refuse to name the real criminals, despite your pleading wife (Judy Greer) you wind up in jail for your transgression. You lose your wife and want her only to be happy. Then you meet some really offbeat folk that awaken you.
No? Well, that’s what happens to Keanu Reeves in Henry’s Crime, an offbeat and underrated little film that is now out on DVD from 20th Century Home Entertainment. Chicago – Keanu Reeves is the sort of actor who succeeds in spite of himself. His best work remains in the late ’80s and early ’90s, when he specialized in playing hazy-brained man-children, the best of which may have been Tod Higgins, the goofy race car driver in Ron Howard’s timeless 1989 comedy, “Parenthood.” Reeves transcended the silliness of his character with a performance of disarming warmth.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Unfortunately, the majority of Reeves’ subsequent portrayals have been marked by an underlying blankness. When he’s not required to merely spout catchy one-liners or engage in slow-mo gun battles, Reeves often resembles a human-shaped void. When his facial muscles move and threaten to form an expression, the actor looks profoundly ill at ease. He may in fact be the world’s first flesh-and-blood android.

Henry's Crime plays out like a lost Woody Allen script, buried in a landfill in upstate New York and then suddenly unearthed. The ravages of time have played havoc with the half-life of the humor, and so all that remains is the completely implausible plot. If I had only read the first ten pages of the script, like the person who cast Keanu Reeves as the headliner, I would have thought it was a slam dunk decision. Right up until the part where he's supposed to play Lopakhin in The Cherry Orchard. It's a mid-life crisis rom-com conning you into thinking it's a wacky heist film. If you pause to think for even a moment, and look around at what's happening, the plot falls apart like a Sorny Home Theater system. Which is odd, considering the screenplay comes from Sacha Gervasi, who directed the delightful Anvil! The Story of Anvil!

Calling all Chekhov fans! The best part of Malcolm Venville's Henry's Crime is its use and interpretation of Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard. Keanu Reeves's character ends up co-starring in the play across from Vera Farmiga's character, integral to his plan to rob the bank he was already wrongly convicted of robbing. Below, Venville explains to us the use of The Cherry Orchard in the film: "The Cherry Orchard is known as a drama but originally Chekhov wrote it as a comedy. Stanislavski directed the first production of the play in Russia as a tragedy, which apparently chagrined poor Chekhov no end. In our movie, the play is a tragedy and the charm of the play is evident with the interplay of the two lovers ...

There are few actors more dependable than James Caan, and his performance in “Henry’s Crime” again bears that out. An Oscar nominee for his indelible portrayal of Sonny Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather” and a multiple Golden Globe nominee for memorable turns in such films as “The Gambler” and “Funny Lady,” Caan gives a tour de force performance as the streetwise ex-con Max in Malcolm Venville’s romantic comedy. Caan and Venville, who previously directed the film “44 Inch Chest” and is an accomplished photographer as well, sat down with Moving Pictures in Toronto to talk about “Henry’s Crime,” in which an aimless toll collector (Keanu Reeves) is sent to prison for a bank robbery he didn’t commit and then, after his release, sets out to rob the bank for real.
