In 1993, a new television show debuted on the Fox network. The X-Files followed two FBI agents, Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), as they investigated a series of mysterious cases ranging from paranormal activity to extraterrestrial encounters. The show gained a large following, particularly among science fiction fans and those fascinated by the growing interest in alien phenomena. The massive popularity of The X-Files might not have come to fruition had it not been for a television show that began airing on the same network in 1991 called Sightings.
Sightings, a show hosted by Tim White, showcased a broad range of investigations of alleged alien abductions, UFO sightings, and paranormal hauntings. Sightings and The X-Files were certainly two very different programs, as the latter was a fictionalized series and the former was investigative and presented in the same way that other shows such as A Current Affair or Hard Copy were depicted.

Mike Flanagan recently made a sci-fi splash with his script for "Stowaway," the incredible Kate Siegel-directed closer in V/H/S/Beyond. While their vision of life inside a UFO is startlingly original, one of Flanagan's favorite horror movies may have provided some inspiration: Phoenix Forgotten, a 2017 found footage feature produced by Ridley Scott. The movie offers a tricky blend of fiction and facts about the Phoenix Lights sightings, a real unexplained event witnessed by thousands.
Phoenix Forgotten plays like a sci-fi sister to The Blair Witch Project, with its tale of teen documentarists who vanish while trying to film a close encounter. However, Phoenix Forgotten is more complex, utilizing real news footage and interviews with real Phoenix Lights witnesses, and building a poignant family drama around the fictional main characters. It's easy to see why Mike Flanagan would be attracted to Phoenix Forgotten, since it is, like much of his own work,...

Extraterrestrials and UFOs are increasingly hot topics these days, appearing in the movies as well as headlines, leading more people to wonder if they might be real after all but this debate has been raging for a long time. Whitley Strieber's mind-blowing 1987 memoir Communion popularized the now-familiar alien tropes of big-headed, bug-eyed aliens, medical probes, and mysterious implants. The book remains a classic, but sci-fi fans may have forgotten its incomparably bizarre adaptation starring Christopher Walken.
Communion recently appeared in the frame story of V/H/S Beyond, which features author Mitch Horowitz in a fictional version of his Discovery docuseries Alien Encounters: Fact or Fiction. Further conflating fact with fiction, Horowitz describes the cultural impact of Strieber's writing, which is as utterly weird as it is eerily convincing. Its even weirder screen adaptation is unlikely to win over the skeptics, but for fans of truly far-out films, it is an absolute must.

Alien abduction movies offer an intriguing concept for sci-fi films, even though there is no evidence to support the idea in real life. These movies often depict the terror of being taken from one's natural habitat and can be played as both horror and comedy, sometimes simultaneously. From classics like Close Encounters of the Third Kind to newer releases like Nope, alien abduction movies continue to captivate audiences with their blend of mystery, wonder, and fear.
No case has ever been proven to be true, but that hasn't stopped people from obsessing over the idea of alien abductions, resulting in great sci-fi movies about humans being taken by extra-terrestrials. Whether it's to take resources from human bodies or for scientific experiments, there's a belief that aliens are motivated to kidnap humans and take them aboard their spaceship. While there is no evidence to support this at all, it makes an...

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, prolific screenwriter Tracy Tormé has passed away at the age of 64. Tormé was a veteran of 1980s-era "Saturday Night Live" and wrote the TV movie "UFO Cover-Up?: Live!" in 1988, cementing his reputation among amateur ufologists everywhere. In the late '80s, Tormé was hand-picked by show creator Gene Roddenberry to contribute to the then-new "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Tormé became the show's executive story editor and creative consultant, a position he held for 24 of the show's early episodes. He is also the credited writer on 12 first-season episodes, including "Haven," "Skin of Evil," "The Arsenal of Freedom," and "The Big Goodbye."
That last episode, which aired on January 11, 1988, was notable in that it was the first holodeck-forward episode of the series. The holodeck was, of course, introduced in the show's pilot, "Encounter at Farpoint," which explained to audiences that the Enterprise-d was equipped with...

Tracy Tormé, the vision behind Sliders and an early writer on Star Trek: The Next Generation, has passed away at the age of 64 from complications from diabetes.
Tracy Tormé’s work and contributions within the sci-fi genre made him famous to fans. As per his sister (via The Hollywood Reporter), he “always interested in UFOs — the serious side of UFOs — and in the Air Force pilots who had seen them.” While he only wrote for two seasons on The Next Generation – also serving as story editor – his touch undoubtedly gave the series the thrust it needed to set the tone for the remainder of the series. The greatest success of his career, however, may be Sliders, which he co-created with Robert K. Weiss. Such a following it had developed, when Fox canceled it after three seasons, Sci Fi picked it up for its remaining two. In total, Sliders had 88 episodes...

Following recent disclosures about aliens by a US intelligence officer and the Mexican Congress, now is the time to go back and watch one of the scariest sci-fi movies of all, Fire in the Sky, based on the alleged true story of the abduction of Travis Walton in the fall of 1975.
If you have been out of the loop, in June, former US intelligence officer David Grusch revealed the truth about UFOs, telling The Debrief that the US government has in its possession non-terrestrial bodies and craft, and is operating a black-budget reverse engineering program to build our own antigravity vessels. More recently, on September 13, the Mexican Congress displayed two mummified alien bodies from Peru that are estimated to be about 1000 years old.

“No One Will Save You,” the tale of a young woman (Kaitlyn Dever) battling extraterrestrial foes, just premiered on Hulu. In many ways it’s the ultimate scary alien invasion movie, throwing in menacing extraterrestrial intruders, abductions, ominously hovering UFOs and even a creepy “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” motif with gooey creatures nestled in your throat. It’s very scary and very good – so good, in fact, that you’ll probably have a hankering for more creepy stories of alien visitation.
To that end, here are five more scary-as-hell alien movies to watch after you finish “No One Will Save You” – and where you can watch them right now.

Whenever you see a film that opens with the words “based on real events”, you can be sure of two things. One, you’re going to have a good time. Two, that this film will probably contain about as much factual material as I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter! contains butter.
But we don’t care!
We’re not just talking about biopics or historical films here, we’re talking about crime movies like Pain & Gain, Catch Me If You Can, romances like It Could Happen to You, and crime romances like I Love You Phillip Morris. And of course the horror genre absolutely loves a “Based On A True Story” title card and poster slogan. The Amityville Horror, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and all The Conjuring movies have one (making the last the first ever Based On A True Cinematic Universe).
So the question is,...

“How To Watch Birds,” episode five of How To with John Wilson’s final season, presents a familiar trajectory: eponymous documentarian follows through with stated premise before being diverted into a completely different context. Not more than seven minutes into Wilson’s episode about birding he’s interviewing UFO expert Travis Walton, whose alleged abduction story inspired Fire in the Sky (1993), and not long after that he voluntarily agrees to a lie detector test. “Have you ever lied to someone on your show?” asks the administrator. “No,” Wilson replies, following a pregnant pause. The director of 1993’s enduring classic Fire in the Sky, Bloody Disgusting has learned that Robert Lieberman passed away at the age of 75 earlier this month after a battle with cancer.
Many horror fans consider Fire in the Sky to be the most terrifying alien abduction movie ever made, with one scene in particular being among the scariest in the genre’s history.
Released in theaters in 1993, Fire in the Sky was based on Travis Walton’s book The Walton Experience, which itself was based on Walton’s real-life tales of alien abduction.
In the film’s most harrowing scene, Walton (played by D.B. Sweeney) is experimented on by a group of aliens, first emerging from a slimy cocoon and then being subjected to various forms of extraterrestrial torture. It’s a sequence that once seen is never unseen, frequently popping up on lists of the scariest scenes in horror...

Be it professors pontificating over the true architects of the pyramids of Giza on Ancient Aliens or Fox Mulder and Dana Scully continually contending with the unknown on The X Files, "aliens were behind it all along" is a relatively popular refrain in modern media. Though a somewhat played-out trope, there's still a certain thrill in attributing all things conspiratorial or otherwise to extraterrestrials.
It's a tough thing to get right; suddenly adding aliens in a plot twist ending can ruin a movie's credibility. However, if done with enough tact, it's possible to convince cinema-goers that E.T.s really are secretly pulling all the strings.

The tropes of an alien abduction — the UFO chasing the car, missing time, strange experiments, grey-skinned beings with large eyes — emerged primarily from two alleged experiences, the Betty and Barney Hill case in 1961, and Travis Walton’s in 1975. Exclusive: D.B. Sweeney is set for a heavily recurring role in Chuck Lorre’s CBS comedy B Positive, starring Annaleigh Ashford and Thomas Middleditch. The role reunites Sweeney with executive producer Lorre with whom he worked on Two And A Half Men.
Created by former Mom co-executive producer Marco Pennette inspired by personal experience, B Positive is about a therapist and newly divorced dad (Middleditch) who is faced with finding a kidney donor when he runs into a rough-around-the-edges woman from his past (Ashford) who volunteers her own. Together they form an unlikely bond and begin a journey that will change both of their lives.
Sweeney plays Bert, a cook that works at the Valley Hills assisted living facility. He can be a little dense, and his haphazard cooking leads to more than a few disappointing meals. But his new boss, Gina, continues to support him. She sees potential, and a lot of herself,...

To celebrate the release of Beyond The Sky – available on DVD & Digital Download 29th April – we have a DVD to giveaway! An engrossing supernatural thriller that at times feels like a found-footage documentary, Beyond The Sky is both an evocative journey into the unknown, and a portrait of the community built around one of modern day’s most prolific myths.
Ryan Carnes (Doctor Who) confidently leads the film as an abrasive sceptic convinced that recollections of abductions are false memories made to mask other traumas. The movie also starts Stormare and Dee Wallace in supporting roles.

If you're a big fan of alien films like Fire in the Sky, then you'll want to keep an eye out for Beyond the Sky, which explores the eerie subject of alien abductions. "We get our fair share of non-believers, but sooner or later they come to realize the truth. Rlje Films has debuted the official trailer for an alien abduction, sci-fi mystery/thriller film titled Beyond The Sky, which is getting a release next month. While shooting a documentary to expose the lies of alien abductees, a provocative filmmaker and his crew encounter a young woman with a dark secret who leads them to uncover a disturbing truth. The film has gone under a few other titles, including Encounter and False Memory Syndrome, but will be released as Beyond The Sky. Travis Walton, author of the memoir "Fire in the Sky" about his own alien abduction experience (which was turned into that horrifying 1993 film Fire in the Sky), served as a consultant and has a cameo in the film. Beyond The Sky stars Ryan Carnes, Jordan Hinson, Claude Duhamel, Martin Sensmeier, Don Stark,...

We may remember Independence Day, The Matrix, The Phantom Menace. But what about these forgotten 90s sci-fi films? And are any worth seeing?
Think back to the science fiction cinema of the 1990s, and some of the decade's biggest box-office hits will immediately spring to mind: The Phantom Menace, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Men In Black, Armageddon and Terminator 2 were all in the top 20 most lucrative films of the era.
But what about the sci-fi films of the 1990s that failed to make even close to the same cultural and financial impact of those big hitters? These are the films this list is devoted to - the flops, the straight-to-video releases, the low-budget and critically-derided. We've picked 50 live-action films that fit these criteria, and dug them up to see whether they're still worth watching in the 21st century.

There's something more chilling about movies based on true events. Knowing that at least some version of what you're seeing on the screen actually happened in real life makes the movie more powerful. With the upcoming release of The Quiet Ones, we decided to reminisce about other movies based on horrific real life events.
The Quiet Ones is inspired by a true story of a university experiment done on a young girl that goes horribly, horribly wrong, so we focused on movies based on claims of supernatural true events.
There is a huge list of honorable mentions in this category. We could even break it down into sub-categories, like movies based on the antics of Ed Gein: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Silence of the Lambs, Psycho and Deranged. True crime reenactments: In Cold Blood, Helter Skelter and Zodiac just to name a few of the best. Even real...

Shaun Ryder has said that he believes people have been abducted by UFOs.
The Happy Mondays frontman leads History's upcoming four-part series Shaun Ryder on UFOs, which starts on Sunday, November 10 at 8pm.
"The big thing that got me was meeting Travis Walton because I'd seen the movie based on Travis's life," said Ryder of making the programme.
"I believe Travis was abducted absolutely. But you see other people who have claimed that they've been abducted and it looks just like they are coming back from a day walking around the Trafford Centre, all jolly!
"Travis looked like he had post-traumatic stress or had just walked out of a Vietnam battlefield. He looked grey and it really affected him - you could see that from his interviews."
He added: "Governments are definitely hiding stuff. I mean I know they are. It's a fact. I think it's because they really think...

Are we alone in the universe? Pondering upon the vastness of the universe, we'd have to be incredibly self-centered to think we are the only life form in existence. And although we haven't seen proof of our intergalactic brethren, there have been plenty of films and TV shows about their clandestine (and more demonstrative) visits to Earth.
Now we have an entirely new horrific vision about one of those alien visits and the havoc they cause in Dark Skies. Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton star as the married couple whose life becomes derailed by mysterious happenings caused by a disturbing malevolent force…and it isn't a domestic disturbance by any means. This one is imported. Way imported.

Travis Walton disappeared for five days back in 1975. But what happened to him? "Paranormal Witness" recounted his story through interviews and reenactments. Walton said that through hypnosis, he was able to remember being taken on board an alien spaceship.
His abduction was witnessed by friends, who said the experience has haunted them to this day.
"I was afraid to look out the window. For a guy, 25 years old, being afraid you’re gonna see a spaceship," one of them, Ken Peterson, said emotionally. "Something that I haven’t gotten over. I wish I could."
Walton's abduction has been considered the most famous close encounter of all time, according to the New York Daily News. That said, though, in 2009 he appeared on the Fox game show "Moment of Truth, where a polygraph test said he was lying about what happened.
True or not, "Paranormal Witness" recounts terrifying tales every Wednesday at 10 p.

And while psychologists and ufologists disagree on the reality of such claims, the theme of alien abduction has been revisited several times by filmmakers since the late 70s. And as this list demonstrates, the results of such films can be decidedly mixed...
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (1977)
Following the financial success of Jaws, director Steven Spielberg took the risky step of remaking Firelight, a small low-budget movie he'd directed when he was just 16. The resulting movie,...
