Paddington in Peru has been yet another success for the titular bear based on the children’s books by Michael Bond, with this third installment managing to take the marmalade lover out of his London comfort zone and back to Peru whilst still achieving universal critical and audience acclaim. Featuring an ensemble including Oscar-winner Olivia Colman, Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, and Ben Whishaw, Paddington in Peru has climbed its way to the heady heights of $175 million at the global box office, split between a domestic haul of $37.1 million and $138.8 million from overseas markets.

"Plot armor" refers to the level of protection given to a fictional character, and the thicker the so-called armor, the tougher it is to injure or kill them. Having too much plot armor often becomes problematic when it gets in the way of satisfactory character arcs. Usually, it is most transparent when applied to the main character, but in the world of Harry Potter, it applies to several characters.
Rowling always intended for certain characters to have specific endings, but twisting fate to generate a sense of closure made for occasionally weak storytelling. The best and most popular Harry Potter characters had more plot armor than their relatively less-known counterparts. Despite the narrative supporting the removal of several characters, some survived longer than they should have.

Following its London premiere in November 2024, Paddington in Perurecently opened in limited U.S. theaters on February 14, 2025. As the lovable teddy bear travels to South America for a new adventure, the elephant in the room is the absence of star Sally Hawkins, who starred in the first two Paddington films under the direction of Paul King.
With Paul King also removed and replaced with Dougal Wilson, Paddington in Peru may lack the tear-jerking charms of the last franchise entry. Paddington 2 was received so well and viewed as such an improvement on the original that fans wonder why Hawkins and King left the franchise after delivering such a magical touch with the second film.

Many may complain that the third installment of the Paddington franchise, Paddington in Peru, pulls at the heartstrings so blatantly that it feels manipulative. However, I contend that this is precisely why we love this Andean Spectacled Bear so much. Our affection has only grown from these moments and is in full bloom.
This franchise is so positive that one might argue it’s stickier and sweeter than a citrus preserve. Yet, Paddington in Peru maintains the love and levity that has become the trilogy’s signature. It’s a fun family film that knows its audience and keeps them coming back for more.
Paddington in Peru Review and Synopsis
Paddington in Peru’s story is relatable, as Paddington (Skyfall’s Ben Whishaw) receives word that his relative is acting strangely. That relative is his Aunt Lucy (Vera Drake’s Imelda Staunton), the sweet woman who raised him in the Peruvian Amazon.

Although there are still a few weeks before most kids get their much anticipated Spring breaks, another “family-friendly” franchise flick arrives which hopes to give a bit of warmth to the chilly last weeks of Winter. Now December, and 2024, finished up with two such films, Mufasa: The Lion King which is a rare sequel/prequel in Disney’s series, and another adventure of the video game superstar, Sonic The Hedgehog 3. Like the latter, this new release is the third outing, and it also mixes a CGI-animated character in a live-action world. However, it also shares its origins with the current (for the last two weeks) box office champ Dog Man, which is based on a beloved series of children’s books. Now can the filmmakers score a rare “hat trick’ as the first sequel is so admired that it was ‘name-checked” at the end...

He’s small, he’s brown, he’s furry and rocks a blue duffel coat and a red hat (no, not that kind of red hat) like nobody’s business. His name is Paddington, and for close to seven decades, this tiny London-based bear has delighted discerning young readers with his extreme politeness, his propensity for getting into misadventures and his loyalty to family and friends.

Paddington in Peru Review: Antonio Banderas and Olivia Colman are fantastic in this family adventure
Plot: When Paddington discovers his beloved aunt has gone missing from the Home for Retired Bears, he and the Brown family head to the jungles of Peru to find her. Determined to solve the mystery, they soon stumble across a legendary treasure as they make their way through the rainforests of the Amazon.
Review: There is no way that any person can dislike the Paddington films. Beautifully made and whimsically appealing for all ages, the first Paddington was a treat when it hit screens a decade ago, and the sequel was a nearly perfect movie in every way. Seven years have passed since Paddington 2 was released, and the world has survived a pandemic and societal shifts aplenty. Having a rousing adventure that the whole family can enjoy together is a welcome respite from all the other things going on, and Paddington in Peru is up to the challenge. With...

The latest in our series of writers drawing attention to their go-to mood-lifting films is an ode to the hit Abba musical from 2008
Three years ago, I was sitting on the mezzanine of an east London bar when it collapsed. On my way back from the hospital, I called my friend to come over and he asked: “What do you need?” I said I needed a glass of rosé and to watch Mamma Mia!
Since Phyllida Lloyd’s camp jukebox musical came out in 2008, I’ve seen it upwards of 20 times (including three trips to the cinema). Why? Well, let’s start with the basics. The cast: Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Christine Baranski, Stellan Skarsgård, Colin Firth. The delightfully absurd plot: young woman raised by a single mother about to be married on a Greek island wants to find out who her father is. The music: 20 of Abba’s classic hits.

Audiences often generate their own assumptions about certain movies before they even watch them, but some movies surpass all expectations and become classics. A troubled production is often an indicator that a movie will end up as a flop, but behind-the-scenes drama doesn't always derail a movie. Classics like The Godfather and Dirty Dancing were almost shut down, and it's a wonder that they ever got finished.
In other cases, audiences can form opinions about a movie before watching it, only for the movie to pack a surprising punch. For example, Titanic was seen as an expensive gamble by a director with no experience making period romances, and Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy was initially derided as an ill-judged attempt to film Tolkien's unfilmable novels. Ultimately, movies shouldn't be judged before people watch them, because some of them can overcome the odds.

Show business is notoriously tough — and before actors make it big, they end up taking small parts to get by. It's inevitable, and if an aspiring actor doesn't book something super lucrative like, say, a national commercial (which can provide solid payouts every time they air), they probably turn to background work to make ends meet and get some exposure. All of this is to say that, if you're enjoying a slightly older movie or TV show, you might see a familiar face in a background scene from time to time. So, which of your favorite famous actors worked as an extra before they got their big break?
From an actor who eventually became a duchess to a handful of Oscar winners to the star of a breakout Netflix hit, here are just a few performers you can spot in the background or in small roles from their early days in the industry.

Paddington in Peru has just been delayed. Although the CG/live-action movie is already in theaters across the pond, Sony has just pushed the United States release date back, meaning that the threequel will not hit theaters as originally planned on Jan. 17, 2025.
Per Deadline, Paddington in Peru will now open on Feb. 14, 2025, over Valentine’s Day and Presidents Day weekend. It's arguably a smart move on Sony's part as the Paddington threequel will now be the only family film in the marketplace until Disney releases its live-action Snow White remake on March 21. Paddington's release date delay comes less than a month after the Dougal Wilson-directed movie notched the best UK opening for a British production since 2021's No Time to Die, which featured Daniel Craig's final outing as James Bond. Paddington in Peru grossed £9.65M ($12.4M) over its first three days, the highest opening weekend ever for...

Sony has moved back the US release of Paddington In Peru from January 17 to February 14, 2025, pitching Studiocanal’s family film against Captain America: Brave New World.
While opening on the same day as a Marvel Studios release sounds daunting, it is likely Sony executives were more eager to avoid clashing with holdover business from Wicked, Sonic The Hedgehog 3, and Mufasa: The Lion King.

Paddington in Peru was released in the UK earlier this month, with a US release set for the new year. However, fans will have to wait a little longer as Sony Pictures has pushed the release back by a month.
The film was set to hit US theaters on January 17, 2025, but will now debut on February 14, 2025. The Paddington sequel has given StudioCanal its biggest-ever opening with a 3-day total of £9.65 million. The first film opened to £5.1 million, and the sequel grossed £8.2 million in its debut. Seems that audiences can’t get enough of that marmalade-loving bastard. While the reactions to the sequel weren’t nearly as glowing as the first two films (which are damn-near perfect), there’s still a lot of fun to be had. StudioCanal is already developing Paddington 4 as well as a new TV series.
Paddington in Peru “follows Paddington and the Brown family as they visit Aunt Lucy in Peru.

Paddington in Peru is still well on its way to theaters across the U.S., but fans of the family-friendly franchise will have to wait longer than originally expected. Starring Ben Whishaw reprising his leading role, the long-awaited Paddington sequel will feature fresh faces joining the beloved film series, filling in for new and old characters. While many expected it to bow out in theaters domestically in January, fans will have to wait another month before Paddington in Peru arrives at its destination.
Paddington in Peru is now set to be released nationwide on Feb. 14, 2025, just under a month after its original release date, Jan. 17. The wholesome family film may not be the most obvious choice for a Valentine's Day movie date, but it's hard to beat an adventure featuring the lovable speaking bear. Meanwhile, those in the U.K. have been able to go to the cinema to see Paddington 3 since Nov.

U.S. audiences will have to wait a little longer to get their Paddington fix, as the successful film franchise’s third installment “Paddington in Peru” shifts from a Jan. 2025 release to Valentine’s Day.
The Columbia Pictures film’s domestic release has moved from Jan. 17 to Feb. 14, now coinciding with both Presidents’ Day & Valentine’s Day weekend. The shift positions the family film on a double holiday weekend, with a large percentage of K-12 students out of school Friday-Monday.
“Paddington 3” debuted in the U.K. earlier this month and scored a record-breaking opening weekend, collecting £9.65 million ($12.4 million) — the biggest opening for a British film since 2021’s “No Time to Die.”

The Paddington films have always been about learning to feel at home. In the first film, Paddington (voiced by Ben Whishaw) adapts to life in London while his adoptive family, the Browns, figure out how to integrate the bear into their household. And in the second film, Paddington even turns a prison into a kind of domestic paradise using nothing but good manners and some fine marmalade. Now, Paddington in Peru presents the series with its biggest challenge, catapulting its characters to the other side of the planet as Dougal Wilson, making his feature directorial debut, takes over from Paul King. And yet, in spite of all these changes, the series has never felt more at home in its own furry skin than it does here.
The film begins with the exciting arrival of Paddington’s first British passport. But the young bear has barely had time to celebrate this...

Comedy movies often have dance scenes to provide a hilarious change of pace, and the funniest dances can make their movies stand out. Dancing can be a language that everyone understands, which makes it perfect for comedy. It provides a great opportunity for physical comedy. Often, this is when dancers are laughably bad, but it can sometimes be even funnier to see a truly skilled performer in the right context.
Some of the best dance numbers in movies can make audiences laugh. It's a joy to watch talented dancers when they use their skills for comedy. This can be funny in and of itself, since it seems like such a humorous waste of time and talent. Comedic dance scenes also manage to break up the pace and tone of a movie, which is often hilarious. The funniest dance scenes are usually the ones which come out of nowhere.

In this, Paddington and his adopted family – the Browns – decide to visit his Aunt Lucy in Peru, only to end up lost in the Amazon rainforest (inspired by the spirit of Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo) and stuck up in the Andes mountains. It's sadly all too common for sequels to fail to live up to the quality of their predecessors, but some have achieved critical success by building on the original movie. Only a few sequels have managed to surpass the movies that came before them on Rotten Tomatoes. In most cases, franchises tend to see a drop-off in quality after the first movie. This has happened with Men in Black, Ghostbusters, The Avengers and countless others. Even great sequels like The Godfather Part II don't necessarily top the movies that came before them on Rotten Tomatoes.
Many highly anticipated sequels flop hard, because the high expectations from the first movies make it difficult to succeed. Making a sequel is always a risk, because fans want to see something new and inventive, but the movie also has to stick to what makes the original so popular. Movies which can achieve this balancing...

A little bear goes a long way, especially at the U.K. box office, where “Paddington in Peru” has scored a record-breaking opening weekend.
The third installment in the beloved Paddington Bear franchise proved that the seven-year wait from the second didn’t matter, becoming the biggest opening of the three to date.
The three-day result of £9.65 million ($12.4) was also the biggest opening of the year for the British-produced film, and the biggest since “No Time to Die” in 2021. For StudioCanal, which financed the feature (its most expensive investment in a film to date), it also marked the company’s biggest opening in the U.K. of all time. Not bad for a plucky CGI bear with a penchant for marmalade sandwiches.
By contrast, the first “Paddington” feature opened to £5.1 million in 2014, while the 2017 sequel earned £8.2 million. The two would go on to earn in excess of $600 million globally, creating...

Paddington in Peru charmed UK & Ireland audiences this weekend with the biggest opening of the year for a British-produced movie, and the best since 2021’s No Time to Die. What’s more, the three-day £9.65M ($12.4M) launch is the highest-ever for Studiocanal with the little marmalade-loving bear going from strength to strength. The 2014 original opened to £5.1M, and the 2017 sequel did £8.2M in its debut. Combined, the previous two films grossed $600M worldwide.
The No. 1 debut for the Dougal Wilson-directed threequel drew an audience of an estimated 1.2M across the UK & Ireland since releasing on Friday.

Paddington In Peru is the third movie in the hugely beloved Paddington series, and the sequel follows the titular bear as he travels home to Peru with his adoptive family, the Browns. Just like the films that came before it, Paddington in Peru is a hugely touching and heartwarming adventure about friendship and found family that takes all the stylish strengths of the original two films and reinstates them in a new location with fun, fresh characters. The story of Paddington in Peru is somewhat familiar, but its the family-friendly charm that makes it another smash hit.
Naturally, much of Paddington in Peru was actually filmed in Peru, and the country plays a huge role in the story. Some months before it lands in US theaters, Paddington In Peru is in UK cinemas already, bringing a slice of irresistible British charm to the silver screen. This time, Ben Whishaw's marmalade-loving bear from Peru - as well as his adoptive family, the Browns, led by Hugh Bonneville's patriarch - are thrust into a South American adventure when Aunt Lucy disappears mysteriously.
For me, Paddington 2 was a 5 star movie, so how do you follow up on perfection? You go abroad, and you add Olivia Colman and Antonio Banderas. The new Paddington threequel flips the script on the dynamic of the first two movies: Paddington is no longer the fish out of water, it's the Browns who are - sent as they are, to "deepest, darkest Peru". New cast members join, old faces return, but there's the same slapstick humor, endearing performances, and heart as always.

The Paddington franchise is one of the most critically acclaimed trilogies of recent times, but how do they stack up against each other? The first movie in the trilogy was released in 2014 to incredibly positive reviews. Its sequel only furthered this in 2017, with Paddington 2's potential best-movie-of-all-time status proving how well-received it truly was. Then there is 2024's Paddington in Peru, the final film in the trilogy of live-action stories based on the lovable young bear.
As evident by the film's title, Paddington in Peru's filming location shifted from London to South America. Upon its release, many placed pressure on Paddington in Peru to match the heights of its predecessors. Although it is the lowest-rated film in the trilogy on Rotten Tomatoes, its critical score still sits at a lofty 90%, proving how excellent each installment in the series is and placing more pressure on the potential story of Paddington...

Paddington in Peru will see Antonio Banderas take on the roles of Hunter Cabot and his many ancestors, who exist as voices in his head. While he enjoyed every minute of it, the actor says juggling three different characters was a little challenging.
"They have a real participation in some moments as they are characters that actually live in the head of Hunter," Banderas told GamesRadar+. "It was nice to play them because I have a tendency to play like a kid, and when they put you in make-up and very specific dress, your whole body goes there to start playing with it. Your voice changes, your manners change. It was fun, but it was hard because of the make-up."

The debut score at Rotten Tomatoes for Paddington in Peru has been revealed. While the score is on par with the previous two CG/live-action movies, it is unfortunately the lowest in the Paddington trilogy.
With 20 critic reviews counted, the third CG/live-action Paddington movie is currently sitting with a fresh 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While this would be considered amazing for any other third entry in a franchise, it's merely on par with the Paddington franchise, whose marmalade-loving bear has routinely won over critics across its three installments. In fact, Paddington in Peru has the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score in the trilogy right now, with 2014's Paddington at 97% (161 reviews) and 2017's Paddington 2 at a near-perfect 99% (250 reviews). Both are also certified fresh. With Paddington in Peru hitting UK theaters this weekend, its Rt score is sure to fluctuate as more reviews are released.

The lovable bear is back. Paddington in Peru has the task of following two movies that had near-perfect positive reactions. Plus, the original director, Paul King, sits this one out. So, now that the film has been screened in the U.K., reactions are hitting social media. How is it faring this time around? Paddington in Peru “follows Paddington and the Brown family as they visit Aunt Lucy in Peru. A thrilling adventure ensues when a mystery plunges them into an unexpected journey through the Amazon rainforest and to the mountain peaks of Peru.” Ben Whishaw returns to voice Paddington, with Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, Antonio Banderas, and Imelda Staunton rounding out the cast.

We could quibble and debate this all day, but barring the odd exception like Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban or Toy Story 3, third installments in film franchises seldom excel their predecessors in quality. And so it is with a sense of inevitable disappointment, like children knowing that their parents’ current financial difficulties will mean less exciting holiday presents this year, that we come to unpack Paddington in Peru.
The sequel is certainly no disgrace. It has many charming elements and qualities, including spectacular scenery, a child-friendly adventure story and Olivia Colman as a manically grinning, occasionally singing, nun. But Paddington in Peru is burdened with the unenviable task of following up two near-perfect predecessors, Paddington (2014) and Paddington 2 (2017).
Those works took some much loved but decidedly dusty intellectual property (Michael Bond’s first book, A Bear Called Paddington was first published in 1958) and found a way to both honor its poky,...

The bar for the bear has been raised awfully high. A decade ago, the polite, Peruvian furball with a hankering for fruit preserves stormed the box office — and our hearts — with his first cinematic outing. Then Paddington 2 proved to be The Godfather Part II of adorable comedies, enhancing pretty much every aspect of the original and even proving a bonding experience for Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal in The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent. Keeping that triumphant roll going was always going to be a tough order. And so it proves — while this threequel provides laughs and charm and two new A-list bad’uns, there’s something intangible missing. The marmalade has lost a bit of its zest.
One issue is that Paddington is no longer out of his element. The marma-lad has left London before, in creator Michael Bond’s books — in 1961’s Paddington Abroad, he headed across the Channel,...

Olivia Colman plays a singing nun. I’m almost prepared to say that’s all you need to know about Paddington in Peru: that Olivia Colman, living English treasure, gets her Julie Andrews on and leads a song-and-dance sequence on an alpine meadow that tells us that the hills are still very much alive. It’s not much of a spoiler to say that her Reverend Mother proves to be something less than exemplary in the deadly sins department, at least the ones that involve lying. That’s the best bit, in fact: the singing nun in the naughty corner.
Paddington in Peru is the third film to adapt Michael Bond’s iconic children’s stories. All of it is fine, actually, not just Colman’s homage to the Von Trapps. Directing duties have passed from Paul King to Dougal Wilson, who may not have King’s Midas touch with physical comedy,...
