When you think of The Lord of the Rings movies, you probably remember the big players, Frodo, Aragorn, Legolas dramatically flipping onto a horse, and, of course, Gollum arguing with himself. However, with a story as massive as Middle-earth, not everyone got the spotlight. Some characters showed up, did something kind of important, and then vanished into the background like they were never there.
Peter Jackson’s trilogy had over 11 hours of runtime, but even with all that time, some characters got the short end of the stick. Maybe they were meant to be more important but got their roles trimmed down, or maybe they were just there to move the plot along before being completely forgotten. You might remember a cool fight scene, a cryptic line, or a side character looking vaguely familiar, but can you name them? Probably not.

Johnny “Spit” Spitieri emerges in this cinematic narrative as a figure caught in the tension of a past that refuses to recede and a present that confronts him with bureaucratic absurdities and existential dilemmas.
The film introduces him in a state of dishevelment and quiet defiance—a man whose return to Australia is marked by a series of unexpected entanglements, beginning at a bustling airport and spiraling into the austere confines of an immigration detention centre. His journey is not merely a physical one but a metaphysical odyssey, exploring the fragile borders between legality and anarchy, clarity and chaos.
The backdrop of the film is painted with the stark hues of Australia’s urban and institutional landscapes. The imposing presence of immigration facilities and the shadowed corridors of law enforcement offer a stage where cultural idiosyncrasies and the gritty realities of criminal existence intersect.

The gags might be a tad silly and the storytelling slightly contrived, but it’s hard to resist the charm of hapless scoundrel Johnny ‘Spit’ Spitieri

Punching up is a valuable rule of thumb for comedians. When it comes to film and TV, however, few would insist on a blanket rule that all gags should be directed towards people of higher status than the joke-makers. Doing so would rob us of some brilliant comic characters, including the greatest of all time: Charlie Chaplin as the Tramp.
It would also expunge from existence Johnny “Spit” Spitieri, the bleary-eyed criminal and former heroin addict hilariously played by David Wenham, first in the 2003 Australian film Gettin’ Square and now in his very own spin-off. This enjoyably low-key affair has occasional laugh-out-loud moments, including one that takes place in a courtroom – like Gettin‘ Square’s funniest scene...

Beginning March 1, Peacock subscribers will be able to stream Snyder's 300, a fictionalized retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae in the Greco-Persian Wars, revolving around Butler's King Leonidas, who leads 300 Spartans into battle against the Persian "God-King" Xerxes and his invading army of soldiers that numbers 300,000. The movie is based on the 1998 comic book limited series of the same name by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley. 300 was Snyder's second directorial feature after his 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake.

The battle scenes in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy are among some of the greatest in cinema history. The Battle of Helm's Deep in The Two Towers and the Ride of the Rohirrim and the final Battle of the Pelennor Fields from Return of the King are fan favorites due to their grand scale, brilliant visual effects, and standout performances from the entire cast. But, you might be surprised to learn that the battles in J.R.R. Tolkien's seminal fantasy world are historically accurate.
Ancient historian, Roel Konijnendijk, sat down with Insider to rate battle scenes from movies, including The Lord of the Rings. He was shown several battles from The Return of the King, and surprisingly had high praise for them in terms of accuracy. Gerard Butler is one of the most successful and recognizable actors in the world. Throughout his career, he has earned a reputation as an action movie star. Some of Gerard Butler's best action movies include Olympus Has Fallen, Copshop, Plane, Den of Thieves, and its sequel, the recently released Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. His roles in these films and many others have cemented him as a legendary action star, but it's his collaboration with Zack Snyder that stands out as his most iconic role.

Zack Snyder's 300, adapted from Frank Miller's comic book of the same name, depicts the brutal battle between the 300 Spartan soldiers and the entire Persian army at the Battle of Thermopylae. Sometimes, life imitates art, as the cast and stunt team on 300 underwent a similar battle to even get the movie made. The film stars Gerard Butler as King Leonidas, the leader of the 300 Spartans, all of whom gave their lives fighting the Persians. While Butler and his cast mates didn't go that far on set, there were certainly some war wounds left behind.
Speaking to People Magazine to promote Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, Butler recalled the painstaking injuries himself and his cast mates received while filming 300. It turns out, giving hundreds of actors and extras sharp and pointy swords isn't always the best idea. "I remember every day somebody was getting taken to the hospital,...

Gerard Butler recalls the difficulties of filming 300 and how many of his co-stars were being taken to the hospital due to injuries.
Butler starred as the King of Sparta in the 2006 Zack Snyder film 300, in which the actor co-starred with Lena Headey, David Wenham, Dominic West, and many more.
“I remember every day somebody was getting taken to the hospital,” Butler told People. “You’d be doing a fight, you turn around, there’s a guy down there, a spear went in his eye. Another time, you turn around, there’s a guy over there who just fell, broke his ankle. I mean, it was insane.”
Butler also mentioned that while filming 2012’s Chasing Mavericks, he was “taken down by a huge set of waves” and “almost drowning,” adding, “I thought I was done. They had to take me out, take me to hospital, put me out, give me the defibrillator.

300 is still considered by many to be Zack Snyder's greatest movie (in close contention with Watchmen). The bloody historical action film depicts the battle between 300 Spartan soldiers and the Persian army at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480Bc. Starring Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, and David Wenham, the movie is filled with all the beautiful fight choreography, muddied color palette, and slow motion that Zack Snyder fans lose their minds over. But, it's far from historically accurate.
Ancient Greek historian, Roel Konijnendijk, sat down with History Hit to examine 300, and assess whether it is accurate or not. Unfortunately for rookie history buffs, who use movies as their templates for real history, 300 should never be quoted as a source. Konijnendijk broke down many scenes, but focused on the fights and action sequences. But, before studying the armor, weapons, and tactics, the film's title might not actually be accurate.

Zack Snyder's movies are currently defined by his heavy use of visual effects, explosions, and intense action sequences but his early projects were a bit different. Before he helmed several films in the DC Extended Universe, he had several critically acclaimed films, including 300.
Unfortunately, historical epic 300 will be leaving Netflix on Dec. 31. The film premiered in 2007 to a positive reception, marking Zack Snyder's second editorial effort after his successful 2004 zombie film Dawn of the Dead. 300 has been available on Netflix since September 2024. The historical epic, which comes after the success of 2000's Gladiator, starred Gerard Butler in the leading role as Leonidas, as well as David Wenham, Dominic West, Michael Fassbender, and more.

The nuanced genre of fantasy entertainment captures a wide variety of fans, from the new TV show installment of the sci-fi fantasy franchise Dune to the upcoming addition to The Lord of the Rings series, The War of the Rohirrim. Despite the poorly received fantasy movies scattered throughout the genre, both low fantasy and high fantasy films have not only revolutionized the magical category but cinematic pop culture.
Though the overall best movies in a genre are always up for debate based on individual opinions, Rotten Tomatoes has tried its hand at covering the best fantasy movies of all time. Some of these, such as the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter installments, are obvious influences on fantastical films. Others may have fallen outside the scope of pop culture, such as the 1940s Beauty and the Beast, but have a surprisingly impactful storyline.

Director Peter Jackson made several significant changes while adapting J. R. R. Tolkiens three-novel epic The Lord of the Rings from page to screen. Most of these adjustments, like infusing character arcs with greater longevity and increasing minor but important characters' roles, organically benefited the transition between mediums. However, one of Jackson's most stark and startling changes remains a divisive swing and a miss. Not only does Faramir's (David Wenham) debut in The Two Towers film differ from Tolkien's book of the same name, but drastically altering Faramir from Tolkien's source material both misunderstands his thematic purpose and undermines his existing nuance.

The Lord of the Rings is a story about reviving a darkened earth and bringing light back to the people therein. Even with its bright disposition, Peter Jackson's franchise, based on the original works of J.R.R. Tolkien, includes plenty of characters who just can't seem to get along.
From Saruman the White and Gandalf the Grey to Azog the Defiler and Thorin Oakenshield, there are multiple memorable rivalries in The Lord of the Rings. These rivalries run the gamut of ferocity, with some only taking the form of friendly competition and others leading to war.

Quick Links Charlie Hunnam Nearly Starred In Zack Snyder's 300 What Was Children Of Men About? Charlie Hunnam And Zack Snyder Eventually Worked Together
Charlie Hunnam has had no shortage of iconic roles, from seven seasons as Jax Teller in Sons of Anarchy to Raymond Smith in 2019's The Gentlemen. In his long career, Hunnam has worked with numerous acclaimed filmmakers, including Guillermo del Toro, Guy Ritchie, and more. Now slated to appear in the upcoming adaptation of Criminal alongside Emilia Clarke and Adria Arjona, Hunnam has made a name for himself in Hollywood. However, the English actor's career could have turned out very differently, as he has turned down many film roles that might have altered his trajectory in filmmaking.
Charlie Hunnam nearly starred in many popular films over the years, including a Star Wars film, but one of the most surprising projects he turned down was from none other than Zack Snyder.

Zack Snyder's historical fiction epic 300 ends in tragic fashion, but it doesn't answer all the questions viewers might have had. 300 follows the story of King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) as he leads a group of Spartan warriors to defend against the invading Persian army, led by King Xerxes I (Rodrigo Santoro). One of Leonidas' men, Dilios (David Wenham), narrates the movie and tells the story of the 300 to the world, which inspires the Greeks to fight back against their invaders. While the cast of 300 told that story tremendously well, the movie still left some questions unanswered.
While 300 is mostly known for Snyder's directorial style and its intense action sequences, it also managed to deliver some important themes and messages. It was often the quiet moments between the movie's massive fights that helped those messages shine, though the warfare also helped. Still, those messages and themes can be...

300 continues to endure due to its exaggerated, thrilling action, and as a classic tale of a brave protagonist fighting against insurmountable odds. As a heavily fictionalized retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae, 300 sees Leonidas, the King of Sparta, leading an army of 300 Spartans against the Persian tyrant King Xerxes and his army composed of more than 300,000 soldiers. 300 is still widely regarded as one of the best projects in Zack Snyder's career that was well-suited to his directing and writing styles.
While 300 is heavy on action and the spectacle it creates, the film's cast is equally important to cementing its legacy. Many of the 300 actors' careers were transformed due to the film's success, paving the way for future roles in a variety of projects. Without these performances that provided the necessary dramatic weight and occasional humor to the story, Snyder's creative vision for 300 would not have worked,...

The Proposition delves into Australia's brutal history with British colonization, showcasing a Mars-like Outback reminiscent of the Old West. Nick Cave's ethereal script and whimsical score make the film an arthouse gem that challenges the traditional Western genre. The realistic depiction of Indigenous Australian culture and harsh colonial treatment sets The Proposition apart as a brutal and accurate frontier film.
The Proposition cast a harsh eye onto a transitional period for Australia after the New South Wales penal colony of the 1820s had transitioned into a permanent British settlement with an eye on 'taming' this barren Austral continent. Screenwriter and rock musician Nick Cave was responsible for the screenplay and music, illuminating a time (still two decades before Australian independence) when the Outback was much like the Old West of the same era. Right off the bat, this drama sets itself apart. We know something’s not right with charming farmer Joe Burt from his first meeting with food writer Birdie Bell. Played ever so smoothly by David Wenham, Joe brags big, but his stories don’t add up. Still, Birdie can’t deny his appeal, portrayed brilliantly by Asher Keddie, evolving from indifference to total immersion.
Set in Melbourne, the city provides the perfect moody backdrop. Half-empty bars and dim lighting enhance an eerie, uncomfortable tone. But it’s Joe’s rundown farm that truly sends shivers, the isolated setting leaving Birdie’s safety in question.
Through it all, Birdie remains our focus as her feelings for Joe intensify despite the signs. Keddie shines in portraying Birdie’s raw turmoil, from longing to see the good to knowing deep down that trouble’s coming. By the dramatic car scene, you’re on the edge of your seat,...
