The bumpy road to Oscar glory will reach its end Sunday night at the 97th Academy Awards, closing out one of the most unpredictable awards seasons in years. Ups and downs, twists and turns, mudslinging, mea culpas, tears both happy and sad — we’ve seen it all in recent weeks as the race kept us guessing what new upheaval might come next.
And that includes who wins tonight. “Emilia Pérez” might have the most nominations (13), but Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical lost its frontrunner status pretty much the moment star Karla Sofía-Gascón’s history of bigoted tweets resurfaced. In stepped “Anora,” which won top prizes with both the PGA and DGA and seemed ready to sail to a Best Picture victory…until “Conclave” swept in and showed us that the race was much tighter than we’d thought.
And what looked like an unobstructed path to best actress anointment for...

Judgment day is nigh!
Awards season is so long that America was able to become a crypto-fascist autocracy faster than Hollywood was able to decide which “Emilia Pérez” song Diane Warren should lose to, but good news: At least one of those things will all be over by the end of the weekend.
The votes have been cast, the campaigns have been campainful, and the predictions have been made and, then re-made, and then scrambled by the SAG Awards at the last second. At this point all that’s left is to hand...

We have suggestions if you’re looking for an awards contender to watch on subscription streaming or on-demand video this weekend. Our list includes an Oscar-nominated top pick that just hit streaming; another Oscar-nominated new release on VOD; a movie that wasn’t nominated for an Oscar but picked up other nominations and wins; a potential future contender now on VOD; and a streaming recommendation that would make for a nice double feature with the top pick.
Top pick: Nosferatu
After a successful theatrical run where it became one of Focus Features’ highest-grossing movies ever, director Robert Eggers’ gothic horror remake has crossed the ocean in a dirt-filled coffin and come to rest on Peacock. The beautifully made film has been nominated for four Academy Awards in craft categories: Best Cinematography (Jarin Blaschke), Best Costume Design (Linda Muir), Best Production Design (Craig Lathrop), and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Bill Skarsgård has been praised for taking his gruelling ‘Nosferatu’ make-up transformation “well”.The actor, 33, was covered from head to toe in special effects – including additional elements for his tongue and eyes, with only the soles of his feet left untouched – during the six-hour daily process of turning him into vampire Count Orlok for Robert Eggers’ recently released horror film.Robert, 40, has now told Variety about the transformation: “I was not so interested in Bill’s features, aside from his eyes. “The things that make Orlok not just an intimidating, masculine human being, is the fact that he’s also decaying and dead. “Even the design of the teeth needed to be something that could be f***** up.”‘Nosferatu’, a reimagining of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic of the same name, required Oscar-nominated makeup effects designer David White to create more than 62 prosthetic pieces for Bill, applied by a team of six.

Following the film’s global success theatrically, Focus Features’ Nosferatu begins streaming exclusively on Peacock on February 21. Peacock will also stream the film’s never-before-seen-in-theaters extended cut.
Rated R for bloody violent content, graphic nudity and some sexual content, Nosferatu has grossed $175.9 million at the global box office. The film earned $95.5 million at North American theaters and $80.4 million from international markets.
The film is nominated for five BAFTA Awards and four Academy Awards. The Academy Award nominations include Best Cinematography (Jarin Blaschke), Best Costume Design (Linda Muir), Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best Production Design (Craig Lathrop; Set Decoration: Beatrice Brentnerová).
From acclaimed director Robert Eggers, Nosferatu stars Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney and Willem Dafoe.
Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.

Focus Features’ second highest-grossing movie ever at the domestic box office, Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, will finally land on Peacock on February 21.
That’s a 58-day theatrical window to Focus’ sister streamer, one of the longer windows for a 2024 release from the Univeral specialty division. Focus Features titles with the longest theatrical-to-svod windows were Drive-Away Dolls (60 days) and Housekeeping for Beginners (63 days).
The period Dracula movie easily became Eggers’ highest-grossing out with $95.4 million stateside and $175.9M global. For Focus, Nosferatu ranks behind 2019’s Downton Abbey ($96.8M) as its second highest-grossing at the domestic B.O. Despite the heat on Nosferatu it will likely remain Focus’ second best, still $1.4M shy of the feature take of the PBS British series. Nosferatu is arguably the highest-grossing major studio release of a Dracula movie stateside since Columbia Pictures’ 1992 Francis Ford Coppola-directed Bram Stoker’s Dracula ($82.5M domestic).

How ‘Nosferatu’ Made Count Orlok’s Arthritic Fingers, Prosthetic Penis and ‘Red as Hell’ Blood Pools
Bill Skarsgård’s transformation into the hideous-looking vampire Count Orlok for Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu” was an arduous process — with the end goal of making the Swedish actor completely unrecognizable.
“I was not so interested in Bill’s features, aside from his eyes,” Eggers says of Skarsgård. “The things that make [Orlock] not just an intimidating, masculine human being, is the fact that he’s also decaying and dead. Even the design of the teeth needed to be something that could be fucked up.”
Oscar nominated makeup effects designer David White created over 62 prosthetic pieces that required a team of six to apply. Skarsgård was covered from head to toe, including elements for his tongue and eyes. Only the soles of his feet were untouched.
The film reimagines F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic starring Max Schreck, whom Eggers wanted to reference when it came to Orlock’s look. One such detail was...

If you’re looking for award-contender movies to watch on streaming or on-demand video this weekend, we have some suggestions. Our list includes an Oscar-nominated top pick that recently became available for home viewing, three other new releases on streaming or VOD (one of which is an Academy Award nominee), and a recommendation of a past Oscar nominee that would make for a nice double feature with the top pick.

The State of the Race
The Best Makeup and Hairstyling nominees are “A Different Man,” “Emilia Pérez,” “Nosferatu,” “The Substance,” and “Wicked.” The emphasis on horror is unusual, with Best Picture nominee “The Substance” as the favorite since the prosthetics are key to Demi Moore’s Oscar-nominated performance.
Oscar-nominated director Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance” is a brilliant satire of toxic beauty culture, in which 50-year-old TV aerobics star Elisabeth (Moore) transforms into gorgeous 20-something Sue (Margaret Qualley). But the youth miracle drug turns to body horror, with Elisabeth becoming the decaying mutation called Gollum and both of them evolving into the hideous Monstro. Prosthetics makeup...

Nosferatu is Robert Eggers' biggest hit to date, but the process he underwent to create this compelling new take on the horror classic is consistent with everything he's done his entire career. The director explained his mantra to MovieWeb: "Every single thing is deeply researched and considered. You're always working to be as historically accurate as possible."
His Mo has always been research, accuracy, and specificity in world building (which is one of the many reasons why what Eggers does next is of such great interest). He knew his Nosferatu and Count Orlok would be faithful to historical lore. "The vampires of early Balkan and Slavic folklore were walking putrid corpses, more visually similar to a cinematic zombie than a handsome, suave, pale Robert Pattinson," said Eggers. Historically correct details win out over nearly everything in Nosferatu, even when Eggers knew some details might leave portions of the audience unhappy.

Coming off the success of his small but career-defining first feature Thief, Michael Mann was off to the races with a high-concept supernatural horror period film, The Keep. Mann's unique talent was abundantly clear, but he had yet to work with a large scale budget and all the risks, roadblocks, and expectations that come with it. David White, who would go on to become one of the most seasoned and spectacular make-up effects artists in the business, was also just starting out and had a front row seat to the problem-laden proceedings, "The production was very British, which [Michael Mann] was kind of fighting against. [There was] a bit of a George Lucas / Star Wars thing going on there."
Mann is known to audiences today as being dedicated to the details, in much the same way that Robert Eggers is, whom White collaborated with on Nosferatu. This was before the Michael Mann of today:...

The only surprise today with Nosferatu’s four Oscar nominations is that four of the six nominees have somehow never been nominated before. Though if you ask the nominees, every film they’ve worked on together is just a way to hone their skills for the next project.
“Film by film, starting with The Witch moving through The Lighthouse into The Northman and Nosferatu, as a group of collaborators, I think we have honed the skills required to choose what’s pertinent to tell the story and produce it to a really high degree,” says costume designer Linda Muir, who received her first Oscar nomination this morning.
Cinematographer Jarin Blaschke was nominated in 2020 for The Lighthouse, which was the only nomination for the film. “Last time it just felt like sort of a fluke thing, just sort of me as an island,” he says. “We’re just sort of hoping...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the nominations for the 97th Academy Awards (Oscars), set to honour the outstanding films of 2024. Originally delayed due to the Los Angeles wildfires, the announcement was made on January 23, from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Brady Corbet’s ‘The Brutalist’ leads the pack with multiple nominations, lauded for its ambitious narrative chronicling the life of an immigrant architect in mid-20th-century America.
The Best Actress category has drawn significant attention, with Demi Moore (The Substance) and Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez) leading the conversation. Moore’s performance has been hailed as one of the best of her career, while Gascón’s nomination is historic, representing a landmark moment for transgender actors in Hollywood.
In the Best Actor category, Colman Domingo (Sing Sing) stands out for his deeply moving portrayal of a prison inmate seeking redemption.

One of the most open-wide races in years is coming into focus. “Emilia Pérez” led all nominees for the 97th Academy Awards with 13, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Its haul sets a new record for a film not in English. “The Brutalist” and “Wicked” tied for second place with 10 each, both also receiving nods for picture. Brady Corbet was also nominated for directing and Adrien Brody scored a lead actor nom, his first since winning for “The Piano” in 2003.
More major milestones: “Conclave” supporting actress Isabella Rossellini earned her first nomination, 46 years after her mother Ingrid Bergman’s final nom. Demi Moore also earned her first nomination, for her lead performance in Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror film “The Substance.” Fargeat became the ninth woman to ever be nominated for directing, following her fellow Frenchwoman Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”) last year. Focus Features has announced that an extended cut of Robert Eggers' Nosferatu is now available to purchase on Digital platforms.
Unfortunately, this version will only include an additional four minutes of footage, although some deleted scenes are also available as part of the bonus content.
The critically-acclaimed gothic horror remake is also still in theaters, and recently passed $150 million worldwide on a reported production budget of $50 million.
In addition to a new featurette, the studio has unveiled an official Count Orlok standee, which gives us our clearest look yet (aside from some leaked screenshots) of Bill Skarsgård as the dreaded vampire.

In addition to a new featurette, the studio has unveiled an official Count Orlok standee, which gives us our clearest look yet (aside from some leaked screenshots) of Bill Skarsgård as the dreaded vampire.

The Crow Girl’s ending centers around how Victoria exacts revenge on those who tormented her all her life. [Spoiler Alert] Her father, Ben Burkeman, used to rape Victoria every night while her mother, Mary, ignored her daughter’s plight and turned up the volume on the TV to drown out Victoria’s screams. Ben also got Victoria pregnant and lied to her that her newborn daughter Madeleine died during childbirth after “she” dropped the baby in confusion and cracked her skull. It was quite apparent that Ben was not merely torturing Victoria physically but also mentally and emotionally to make her feel guilty. In The Crow Girl’s ending, Victoria just wanted to save her daughter from the monsters living in that house, but before Madeleine could escape, Ben pushed the young girl off the stairs and killed the innocent soul. This was the moment Victoria unleashed her fury upon father.

Hollywood’s award season has already warmed up the new year; the Golden Globes successfully separated favorites from potential surprises, and nominations for SAG and Critics Choice Awards have already been unveiled. Now, the British Academy Film Awards have followed suit.
While Hollywood is fighting the cataclysmic California wildfires, postponing forthcoming ceremonies and extending Academy Awards submission dates, fortunately, all the way across the Atlantic Ocean, the British Isles face no such threat. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced nominees across 26 categories, recognizing outstanding contributions to cinema.
Doctor Who actor David Tennant, last year’s host, will return to lead the ceremony. This year marks one of the most competitive lineups, with no clear frontrunners and several close races. With Robert Eggers' Nosferatu now playing in theaters worldwide, Focus Features has decided to unveil our first official look at Bill Skarsgård as the titular vampire, Count Orlok.
We have seen several leaked shots already (see below), and this featurette does keep Orlok in the shadows, only showing his full visage very briefly right at the end.
So, if you haven't seen the movie yet, you're safe enough giving this a watch, because you'll see a lot more (maybe a little too much) of the character in the actual film.
Even so, here's your spoiler warning.
The pinnacle of horror characters.

In Robert Eggers’ new take on the 1922 horror film Nosferatu, actor Bill Skarsgård shows a stunning change as he plays the creepy Count Orlok. To achieve this change, the prosthetics and makeup team had to work together expertly to combine realistic historical detail with spooky horror aesthetics.
The lead prosthetics artist, David White, noticed a dramatic difference in Skarsgård during the first makeup session. White remembers that a nice, friendly young man started to fade away, and someone else was taking his place. After four hours, Skarsgård had become a dark figure.
The outward change required a lot of work. Skarsgård used about 60 different artificial pieces, including 10 made just for his face and head. White said the application process was like a quick stop in a car race. A team of 16 spent four hours putting on the prosthetics for the head and hands.

Not much was changed in writer-director Robert Eggers’ 2024 remake of Nosferatu, which was adapted from the 1922 silent vampire film, based on Dracula by Bram Stoker. But yes, the one thing that was beyond recognition was Bill Skarsgård’s appearance as the vampire, Count Orlok.

Covered in prosthetics from head to toe, the Swedish actor famously known for It, revealed how difficult it was for him to move and perform the role. But the main difficulty originated during his infamous s*x scene with Lily-Rose Depp in the final moments of the film. So much so that Skarsgård shared his thoughts from when they were filming the disturbing sequence.

It’s not hyperbole to suggest that Robert Eggers has spent decades thinking about Nosferatu. In elementary school in New Hampshire, the filmmaker saw a picture of Max Schreck as Count Orlok in F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror and “lost my mind.” After he became obsessed with the film on VHS, a teenage Eggers directed a black-and-white stage version of Nosferatu, complete with actors painted in black and white. In 2016, after Eggers’ breakout film, The Witch, immediately made him a name to watch among cineastes, Eggers said he hoped to make Nosferatu his follow-up feature.
However, almost a decade passed before Eggers made Nosferatu. The wait has been worth it for the filmmaker and fans.
“The reaction has been pretty overwhelming. Even before the movie was released, it has just been a lot bigger than anything I’ve ever been involved with in terms of marketing,...

Max Schreck’s vampire in F.W. Murnau’s 1922 “Nosferatu” is one of the most iconic actor transformations and horror movie creatures in cinema history. It’s an image that captivated director Robert Eggers as a kid and led to his life-long obsession with the silent classic. And so naturally, one of the biggest questions surrounding the director’s remake would be how he and prosthetic makeup effects designer David White would transform actor Bill Skarsgård (an actor already well known for his Pennywise transformation in “It”) into the infamous Count Orlok.
It’s a curiosity that Focus Features’ marketing team latched onto with trailers that create anticipation of what lurks in the shadows and behind the elongated fingers reaching across the screen. It’s an approach that built off what Eggers and cinematographer Jarin Blaschke do in the film’s first half, as Skarsgård’s Orlok is kept largely obscured...

Makeup effects designer David White recently discussed the process behind Bill Skarsgård’s transformation into Count Orlok for Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu. The gothic horror reimagines F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent classic as the titular vampire preys upon the residents of a remote seaside village, particularly the haunted Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp), a young woman whose husband, Thomas (Nicholas Hoult), is unwittingly drawn into the grasp of the ancient creature. Released on Christmas Day by Focus Features, Nosferatu continues to captivate audiences with Egger's signature atmospheric dread.
In an interview with Variety, White explained the meticulous process of designing Skarsgård’s prosthetics to embody the ageless yet decayed Count Orlok. He drew inspiration from Max Schreck’s 1922 portrayal of the vampire while crafting a wholly original vision for Egger's remake. Here's what the designer had to say about the most challenging part of the design:

Nosferatu has been playing in US theaters since Christmas Day, but Robert Eggers' remake of the classic horror tale only opened in other major markets on January 1. As a result, we're now beginning to see more leaked screenshots find their way online.
Thanks to several social media posts, we have our best look yet at Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, and the It star really is unrecognizable as the ancient vampire.
This new take on the character has proven to be divisive, but Eggers has previously explained that he wanted to change up the classic creature design for something that more closely resembled an "undead nobleman."
The filmmaker revealed his thought process behind the vampire's look during a recent interview with Deadline.
“What would a dead Transylvanian nobleman actually look like? That was basically where I started from, and I wanted to still acknowledge Max Schreck’s makeup design.”

Spoiler Alert: This article contains mild spoilers about “Nosferatu,” now playing in theaters.
Robert Eggers’ horror film “Nosferatu” has been getting high praise for its craft, from the costumes to the cityscapes, boats and carriages. Yet Bill Skarsgård’s transformation into the horrific Count Orlok has been the biggest topic of conversation.

Although Focus Features is still hiding full images of Count Orlok, White, traveling internationally while working on his next project, emailed answers to Variety about our biggest questions.

Orlok is a centuries-old vampire who travels to the town of Wisborg to spread fear and drain the life of his victims. He is based on the character of Count Dracula from the novel ‘Dracula,’ but with a more monstrous and eerie look.
In the original ‘Nosferatu’ (1922), Count Orlok is a creepy vampire with a very pale, bald head, sharp teeth, and long, claw-like fingers. His face is gaunt and skeletal, giving him a haunting, otherworldly appearance.
The latest take on the character, Eggers’ ‘Nosferatu’ presented a different look for the iconic character. In the new ‘Nosferatu’ film Director Robert Eggers wanted to give the character a fresh, unique look. When Thomas Hutter (played by Nicholas Hoult) finds Orlok in his sarcophagus, the vampire is revealed with a bushy mustache, a skeletal face, and decaying skin all over his body, including a full frontal nude scene.

Nosferatu's take on Count Orlok is a far cry from the vampire's classic big screen appearance. However, a drastic reinvention was expected with filmmaker Robert Eggers eager to put a new spin on the classic horror story.
When Nicholas Hoult's Thomas Hutter discovers the Count resting in his sarcophagus, Orlok is fully revealed; Bill Skarsgård dons a bushy mustache, has a skeletal face, and patches of decaying skin all over his body.
Skarsgård, who transformed into Pennywise the Clown in the It movies, embraced the prosthetics and makeup needed to bring Count Orlok to life on screen in the remake but admits they were a challenge at first.
"I was worried that I couldn't perform through it, that it would feel like giant prosthetic pieces, and I couldn't come alive through that," Skarsgård told Entertainment Weekly. "There was definitely a stage when they hadn't put everything on, where I was like,...

This article contains mild spoilers for "Nosferatu."
There is much within Robert Eggers' film "Nosferatu" that is to be expected. If you're familiar with the prior cinematic incarnations of Dracula, vampire movies in general, Eggers' filmography, or some combination of all three, then you're not necessarily going to be surprised by everything in the film. There's a lot of bloodletting, a palpable sense of dread, an authenticity of time and place, and a psychosexual relationship between the vampire Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) and his victims — all aspects that foreknowledge of vampire movies and Eggers' work should prepare you for.
However, part of the joy that comes with following the work of a true auteur is seeing how much they can still surprise you, even as they remain true to their quirks and proclivities. "Nosferatu" is as undeniably Eggers' film as it is a quintessential vampire movie, and yet it's honestly...

Remember that eerie feeling you get when you walk past a shadowy alley and something feels off? The kind of vibe that makes you look over your shoulder? That’s what Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu brings to the table—the one you can’t forget, no matter how much you wish you could.
Eggers, who brought us the twisted brilliance of The Witch and The Lighthouse, reimagines the iconic 1922 classic Nosferatu in a way that feels like a visual fever dream. With a current 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the critics are practically raving about this film.
What’s the deal? A haunting, gothic horror that’s as mesmerizing as it is unsettling. The cast is stacked with A-listers who nail their parts to perfection, like Bill Skarsgård, who’s downright terrifying as Count Orlok.

Nosferatu has raked in some major award nominations despite a prominent snub earlier in the week. It is the latest horror movie from The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman director Robert Eggers, remaking the iconic 1922 German expressionist silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. This is the latest of several remakes of the property, which itself is loosely adapted from the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker, a title that has also been adapted to the screen many times.
Horror movies were relatively well-represented in the nominations for the 2025 Golden Globes, which were announced on December 9, 2024. The nominated included one nomination for Heretic (a nod for Hugh Grant for Best Actor - Musical or Comedy) and five for The Substance. However, the upcoming Nosferatu was snubbed entirely by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group behind the event.

It’s exceedingly rare for a directing duo to come out of the Gopher State. But in the case of Don’t Move’s Adam Schindler and Brian Netto, they had the ultimate example to follow.
As 9-year-old classmates in Woodbury, Minnesota, Schindler and Netto started making backyard movies in their suburban neighborhood just like the Coen brothers had done decades earlier in their nearby Saint Louis Park suburb. As Schindler and Netto focused more and more on their pursuit, they eventually took a page out of the Coens’ co-directing playbook by crediting one person as sole director and the other as a producer. The tale they had heard was that Coens adopted the approach in order to create a more favorable impression among financiers. (After 20 years, the Coens finally shared directing credit as of 2004’s The Ladykillers.)
Schindler and Netto opted for a slight tweak by taking turns, with Netto...

(Welcome to Under the Radar, a column where we spotlight specific movies, shows, trends, performances, or scenes that caught our eye and deserved more attention ... but otherwise flew under the radar. In this edition: Netflix's "The Diplomat" season 2, the Sam Raimi-produced thriller "Don't Move," and the genre-bending "It's What's Inside.")
Oops, all Netflix! Nobody would dispute that the mega-streaming platform easily leads the pack in terms of total subscribers, brand awareness, and catchy slogans. (Don't tell me that Prime Video and Disney+ haven't been trying to chase the coattails of "Netflix and chill" ever since they first debuted.) Netflix has also thoroughly disrupted the film industry and its conventional reliance on theaters worldwide, taking smash-hit franchises like the "Knives Out" movies and snatching them right out from under Lionsgate's nose ... though it might have met its match with Greta Gerwig insisting on a theatrical release for "The Chronicles of Narnia.
