"Final Destination" isn't the greatest horror franchise in film history (that distinction belongs to George A. Romero's "Dead" movies), but it just might be the most consistently entertaining. It's definitely a property that bucks a lot of the conventional wisdom regarding horror films: The first installment, James Wong's "Final Destination," is easily its weakest, while the fifth chapter is considered by many to be the best of the bunch.
The "Final Destination" franchise may actually be the apotheosis of the slasher genre insofar as such films' primary visceral appeal is the grisly inventiveness of their kills. It's a gore smörgåsbord of Rube Goldberg fatalities carried out by the invisible hand of Death. The movies' formula dictates that any installment must kick off with an extraordinarily complex chain-reaction accident, the survivors of which must scramble to avoid Death's relentless attempts to clear them off the game board. Late actor Tony Todd is giving fans his final onscreen role with the highly-anticipated “Final Destination Bloodlines.” Todd played William Bludworth across 25 years of the “Final Destination” franchise; “Bloodlines” is the sixth installment of the beloved horror films.
“Final Destination Bloodlines” stars Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Teo Briones, Richard Harmon, Owen Patrick Joyner, Anna Lore, and Brec Bassinger alongside Todd. While the plot remains just as mysterious as the reason for the predetermined deaths, we do know that the feature will be getting an IMAX release.
Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky co-direct from a screenplay by Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor. The story is by Jon Watts (“Spider-Man: No Way Home”), Busick, and Evans Taylor. “Final Destination Bloodlines” is based on characters created by Jeffrey Reddick.
The tagline reads: “The newest chapter in New Line Cinema’s bloody successful franchise takes audiences back to the very beginning of Death’s twisted sense of justice.

Few horror franchises have become a part of pop culture like Final Destination. Finding a truck full of logs on an expressway, riding a roller coaster, and even passing through a suspended bridge are synonyms with nightmare-inducing scenes that prove death, as well as life, will always find a way. Throughout five extremely violent and occasionally funny movies, fans were able to witness many creative ways to be killed, and now original director, James Wong, has revealed his favorite kill in the franchise that convinced everyone that tanning beds could actually be deathbeds as well.
Wong spoke to Bloody Disgusting about the legacy of the Final Destination franchise, the inevitability of death, and how a bonkers concept became a successful film: "When Final Destination came out, the critical reaction wasn't over the moon or anything, but it just kept on. Generally, a movie goes out of the top 10 within the first three weeks,...

The Dragon Ball franchise, created by Akira Toriyama might be one of the greatest anime franchises in history and there is no doubt of that. The series was a pillar that helped the anime industry become a global success, and even after so long it continues to inspire fans and other creators with its enticing storyline and brilliantly written characters.

While almost every project by the franchise has been a worldwide success, there is one that the Dragon Ball community refuses to acknowledge as one of their own. This project was none other than the 2009 live-action adaptation of the Dragon Ball story, called Dragonball Evolution by 20th Century Studios which was an incredible failure.
Almost every aspect of the movie was rejected by the Dragon Ball fans and even the former editor of the Dragon Ball manga, Kazuhiko Torishima hated everything about it.

'Final Destination' director James Wong believes the horror series is successful because it is "so visceral and surprising" for audiences. The 43-year-old filmmaker helmed the first 'Final Destination' movie in 2000 and the third flick in 2006, and has now shared his beliefs that the franchise has remained popular because viewers react so strongly to its gory content.Speaking with Bloody Disgusting, Wong recalled: "I went into the theater during the first run, because I love watching a movie with an audience. We suddenly saw a bunch of ushers from the theater walk in in the middle of the movie and just stand by the side. "And I realised it was right before the bus hit. They just wanted to see the audience react."I think they did a whole advertising campaign where they had cameras on an actual audience, and popcorn’s flying and all that stuff.

Like it or not, 2025 is rapidly becoming the Year of the Freak Accident.
In horror, everybody from audiences who loved “The Monkey” to that very flammable fellow in “The Rule of Jenny Pen” is feeling it. But there’s even more to come when “Final Destination” — the genre’s most criminally underrated supernatural franchise — returns with scads more not-so-accidental deaths on May 16.
The aughts used to get a bad rap in pop culture, but that’s improved somewhat in recent years. As filmmakers have released their death-grip obsession on the ’80s, familiar faces and franchises from throughout the 2000s have reemerged across all types of movies and TV. Right now, for example, you can see the forty-something “Veronica Mars” dating that forty-something guy from “The O.C.” in a rom-com on Netflix that’s been wildly popular — in spite of the title “Nobody Wants This.”

The Final Destination franchise is thriving with a sixth installment about to release. Director James Wong credits this success to the films' recurring premise, which subverts the trope of the serial antagonist.
Director James Wong recalled Final Destination's reception, 25 years after its theatrical release. He said he sensed even then that the film had the potential to spawn a thriving series. The Final Destination franchise is filled with many memorable death scenes, though there are some that stand out as the most iconic of them all. Among them is the unforgettable bus hit in the first film, and it was thanks to a last-minute editing trick that it worked out so well.
Looking back at the film in honor of its 25th anniversary, director James Wong and co-writer Glen Morgan shared some behind-the-scenes stories about Final Destination in a new interview with Variety. They addressed the famous scene in which Terry (Amanda Detmer) tells the other survivors that they can "drop f***ing dead" just before she's immediately smashed into by a speeding bus. Morgan shared how the scene was actually inspired by a close call he'd witnessed in real life that always stuck with him.

Few characters returned in the Final Destination sequels outside of Tony Todd's William Bludworth, death's harbinger. Director James Wong recalled how the late actor fleshed out the role and elevated the series.
Director James Wong has nothing but praise for the late Tony Todd's performance in the Final Destination movies. "It's not so often that you come upon an actor that elevates and at the same time solidifies your idea of what the character is, and Tony did both of those things," he told Bloody Disgusting. Todd first appeared in the 2000 original as William Bludworth, a coroner who somehow knew what the film's victims were up against. Todd reprised the role in Final Destination2 and 5; he was the voice of the devil in Final Destination 3. He's set to appear posthumously in Final Destination: Bloodlines.

Before “Final Destination,” cheating death never seemed so fun.
Directed by James Wong from a screenplay he wrote with Glen Morgan, based on a story by Jeffrey Reddick, the film came out of nowhere on March 17, 2000, to hit moviegoers like a bus. Based around its characters dying from an intricate but outwardly mundane sequence of events, its premise would quickly become cultural shorthand for dangerous, naturally occurring Rube Goldberg scenarios and spawn a beloved horror franchise whose sixth installment, “Final Destination Bloodlines,” arrives in theaters May 16.
Yet even before “The X-Files” executive producers Wong and Morgan got involved with the project, “Final Destination” would never have existed without the science fiction television show. It was Reddick’s favorite at the time, and he wrote the original story as a spec script for the show to land a TV agent before producer Chris Bender recommended he develop it as a feature.

Audiences learned that cheating death comes at a price when Final Destination opened in theaters 25 years ago today.
“Everybody experiences close calls, and everyone knows that, at some point, they’re going to die. Hopefully you die in a quiet, gentle way, but it happens. You have to understand that it’s going to happen to you,” director/co-writer James Wong tells Bloody Disgusting.
“When Final Destination came out, the critical reaction wasn’t over the moon or anything, but it just kept on. Generally a movie goes out of the top 10 within the first three weeks, and ours just stayed up there for a long time.”
Before spawning a franchise that changed the way we look at seemingly innocuous things like logging trucks and tanning beds, Final Destination began its life an “X-Files” spec script by Jeffrey Reddick that was later rewritten by Wong and his then-partner, Glen Morgan.

Nearly 30 years ago, The X-Files aired an episode so controversial that it not only became infamous for its disturbing content but also left a permanent scar on a generation of viewers. The universe can be a pretty crummy place sometimes, so it's important to seek out every last nugget of joy or, absent something so extravagant, just a smile here and there to ward off total despair. You could argue that we don't even deserve the latter in extraordinarily crummy times such as these, and maybe this is true, but I like getting out of bed in the morning, so I'll afford myself the privilege of hope however it materializes. Did the Cleveland Cavaliers win last night? That's one foot on the floor. Did I text with some out-of-town friends I haven't personally seen in months or years? There's another. Did John Carpenter just win a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association? Oh baby, we're up and headed for that first cup.

Although it's still possible to get into the weeds when discussing auteur theory, it's generally become accepted that directors, especially if they're also acting as their own screenwriters, have a large degree of creative control over their films. As such, it's possible to find common threads that connect a certain filmmaker's work, whether those threads are thematic, stylistic, or some combination of the two. For example, think of the Stanley "Kubrick stare," the Spike Lee floating dolly shot, Alfred Hitchcock and voyeurism, Steven Spielberg and father figures, and so on. Some directors may seem easier to clock than others, of course, especially if they exclusively or generally work within a particular genre. Yet even those who remain in one genre can contain as much artistic diversity as those who attack a wide range of subject matter.

Say what you want about Ryan Murphy, but he always seems to be thinking about the best way to make his television empire thrive. Before today, there was no indication that his popular procedural series 9-1-1 and his newest endeavor, Doctor Odyssey, shared a universe, but that's all set to change as the worlds of his two ABC series are about to collide.
Per Variety, 9-1-1 and Doctor Odyssey will cross over in a special episode of the latter that will see Angela Bassett's character, Athena Grant from 9-1-1, head over to the cruise ship on Doctor Odyssey led by Joshua Jackson's Dr. Max Bankman. With 11 seasons, two movies, and a plethora of spin-off material, there's no denying that The X-Files is a hit. Not only did it transform the modern sci-fi genre, but it also altered how fans see romance arcs as well as female characters. Even after three decades, fans still adore Mulder and Scully.

It's a franchise that remains incredibly popular and dear to people's hearts, and the impact it's had on pop culture is undeniable. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been on the trend of exploring an ambitious concept in its movies with the “Multiverse.” It started in some of the original comic stories, but now it’s really been used to capitalize on a bevy of crowd-pleasing moments. Other movies, such as Everything Everywhere All at Once, also use the multiverse to explore the different branches of life created by a single act. Even properties like Mortal Kombat are getting in on the game. While the “parallel universe” plot device has been used in many sci-fi stories in the past, back in 2001, a little action movie attempted to introduce the idea of the “multiverse” to a mainstream movie audience. Today, we take a look at Jet Li’s The One and see how it holds up with its own take on the concept.

Final Destination fans can look forward to catching (parts of) their favorite franchise on a new streaming platform.
Per Max, more than half of the Final Destination feature film franchise will be available for streaming on the platform beginning February 1. Unfortunately for fans, this only includes Final Destination 2, Final Destination 3, and Final Destination 5, leaving the first and fourth films to be found elsewhere by those looking for a complete Final Destination viewing experience.

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball exists in various forms and mediums, with every extension adding something new to the series. However, these additions are not always well done or appreciated by the fandom. For instance, Dragon Ball: Evolution was a live-action adaptation of the manga, but failed to live up to the expectations of fans.

Moreover, even Toriyama publicly voiced his disapproval of the movie. However, the disappointment caused by the film led to the next and beloved project, which is still fondly remembered to this day.

Directed by James Wong, Dragon Ball: Evolution was released in 2009. On paper, the movie was based on Akira Toriyama‘s celebrated Dragon Ball series. However, the final product was very different from Dragon Ball, as fans knew it.

There's a new fantasy romance series coming our way, and that makes me very excited because this is one of my favorite genres! Prime Video has ordered Rise of the Empress, which is based on the book series of the same name by author Julie C. Dao. Work on the show is still in early stages, but we do have some information to get us all giddy!
There are two novels in the series - Forest of a Thousand Lanterns and Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix. Crazy Rich Asians star Gemma Chan and the iconic Viola Davis are attached as executive producers. Crystal Liu and James Wong are working together as showrunners, writers, and executive producers on the project. Dao will also serve as an EP.
According to Deadline, the show will be a total of 8 episodes, with production set up in Malaysia. Ready to learn even more about what to expect?...

Prime Video is entering another fantasy realm.
The Amazon-owned streamer has greenlit a series based on Julie C. Dao’s Rise of the Empress novels. The drama — which counts Viola Davis, Forest Whitaker and Gemma Chan among its executive producers — is set in a “fantastical ancient Asian empire,” per the show’s logline, and centers on a peasant girl named Xifeng who, backed by a vengeful sorceress, vies to win the heart of the heir to the throne.
Crystal Liu (American Horror Story) and James Wong (The X-Files, AHS) will serve as co-showrunners on the series, which comes from Amazon MGM Studios, Davis and Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions, and Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi’s Significant Productions.
“This story, led by an incredible female heroine, is an inspiring tale of strength and resilience,” said Nick Pepper, head of wholly owned U.S. SVOD TV development and series at Amazon MGM Studios.

Death is right around the corner. The popular horror franchise Final Destination is officially returning later this year, and now we have a release date! The sixth film in the series, Final Destination: Bloodlines, will hit theaters on May 16, 2025.
Bloodlines is the first new entry into the franchise since the fifth film was released in 2011. This May is an apt time to release the latest movie because it comes just a few months after the franchise's 25th anniversary. The original film, directed by James Wong, came out in 2000.
Details regarding the plot of Bloodlines are being kept under wraps, but there are theories that this film will focus on how Death could stalk the children of survivors. The title itself sounds like it could be hinting toward familial relationships.

The Final Destination movie series is among the latest to get a reboot, and the upcoming sixth movie can finally explain the franchise’s biggest mystery thanks to one important change. Back in 2000, the horror genre was going through a peak in slasher stories, and Final Destination arrived to add extra chaos to this branch. Directed by James Wong, Final Destination introduces the audience to Alex Browning (Devon Sawa), who has a vivid vision of the plane he’s boarding exploding. Alex, a teacher, and some of his friends and classmates leave the plane, which minutes later explodes just like in his vision.
Because Alex and the rest cheated Death, they begin to die in bizarre circumstances, one by one in the order they were meant to die on the plane. The success of Final Destination led to a franchise with a total of five movies and a sixth one in development,...

The horror genre keeps riding the wave of legacy sequels and reboots, through which some of the biggest franchises have been brought back to life – so it’s not that surprising that two unlikely horror franchises are returning, too. The film industry has greatly benefited from reboots and legacy sequels in recent years, mostly in the horror genre, even if not all of these have succeeded. Franchises like The Exorcist and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre returned with one movie that didn’t perform well, while others like Friday the 13th continue to face many challenges that stop them from coming back.
Other horror franchises have greatly benefited from this trend, as happened with Halloween and Scream, while others will be getting a new chance, as is the case for The Exorcist. All these franchises are some of the most successful, popular, and profitable ones in the genre, so it was...

This third instalment reinvigorates Freddy Krueger with a mix of dark humour, creative dream sequences, and a cast of characters who fight back. It’s a fan favourite for good reason.

Final Destination: Bloodlines finally has a release date! Warner Bros. has dated the film for May 16, 2025, after years of back-and-forth during the development process. By the time the sixth film in the franchise is released in theaters, it will have been 14 years since we last saw a Final Destination movie.
The last film in the series, Final Destination 5, was released in August 2011. Final Destination 5 was better received than the fourth entry, with some people feeling it was one of the best in the franchise. After that, it seemed like Warner Bros. wasn't entirely sure what to do with the franchise. At one point, it was going to be distributed by its Max streaming service.

There are enough celebrities who are currently vying (if unofficially) for the title of Christmas Queen that Lucy van Pelt has some serious competition. In terms of sheer cultural ubiquitousness, Mariah Carey seems to be the frontrunner on the strength alone of her 1994 multi-Platinum single, "All I Want for Christmas Is You." Hot on her heels are some other pop divas, including Kelly Clarkson, Ariana Grande, and Sabrina Carpenter, who've all had a holiday hit that has remained popular for years afterward. While that's all happening in the music world, things seem a little more clear-cut in Christmas movie land. Sure, numerous actors have been in huge holiday films that are watched year after year, but it's hard to think of another actor who's been in more Christmas movies then Lacey Chabert.

Thanks to the MCU, the concept of the cinematic multiverse is now everywhere. But action superstars Jet Li and Jason Statham got there long before the likes of Doctor Strange with this panned science fiction outing. And it’s all set to stream for free. Released back in 2001, and in a post-Matrix world, The One introduces audiences to a multiverse-hopping serial killer who, when he kills each version of himself, gains their strength, speed, and knowledge. We found out last year that the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, would be getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release from Synapse Films. They were originally aiming for a Halloween 2023 release, but since they missed that month they ended up giving the movie a limited edition release last month. Those 6,666 units sold out so fast, with fans crashing the Synapse Films website along the way, that the company has now wisely decided to put together a standard edition of the Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release as well. Today, they announced that the street date for the standard edition is March 11th.

When it comes to the box office, the action genre can be fickle (unless you are Tom Cruise) with big names not always bringing the guaranteed payday. It happens to the best and beefiest of the genre, but when two fan favorites come together, success is almost expected. Both Jet Li and Jason Statham have amassed impressive careers, kicking a** and taking names for decades, with the 2000s being particularly kind to both actors.
2007's War should have been a success, but it did not manage to win over critics and underperformed at the box office. Almost two decades after its release, we will look back and see why the action flick fell so flat and whether it is worth revisiting with fresh eyes.

One of the earliest episodes of The X-Files season 1, episode 8, Ice was a sly remake of John Carpenter's sci-fi horror masterpiece The Thing. A lot of The X-Files classic standalone Monster-of-the-Week episodes were influenced by iconic horror films. Season 4, episode 2, Home, is a slasher about a murderous family inspired by The Hills Have Eyes and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Season 6, episode 7, Terms of Endearment, subverts the story of Rosemarys Baby with its tale of a demon snatching an unborn child from its mothers womb.
The series premise of two agents working in the FBIs underground supernatural affairs division gave the writers the freedom to explore every horror trope and subgenre under the sun. The X-Files even did an episode parodying Cops with a werewolf on the loose: season 7, episode 12, X-Cops. The X-Files was taking inspiration from horror cinema from the very beginning. With the horror season drawing to a close, you might feel the urge to watch a new scary movie. If you’re like us, you’ll find that Scream aesthetic is your go-to vibe. However, you may have already watched it once or twice (or seven) times already. Luckily, we have assembled a list of very good flicks that found their way into theaters as rip-offs to Scream. Most are melodramatic, and a few are exceptional, but these hit the sweet spot if you’re in the mood for a light slasher. Some even star some of the actors and iconic villains. Check out the movies below, and have a great Halloween!

We found out last year that the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, will be getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release from Synapse Films. They were originally aiming for a Halloween 2023 release, but since they missed that month they’re bringing this gift to the world this month instead. Pre-orders can now be made through the Synapse Films website, DiabolikDVD, and Orbit DVD – and copies are expected to start shipping out next week! This release is limited to just 6,666 units with a suggested retail price of $66.66, and as of right now there are no plans for a standard edition release.
Synapse will not be shipping outside of North America, but DiabolikDVD and Orbit DVD will accept international orders.
Directed by Charles Martin Smith from a screenplay by Rhet Topham, Joel Soisson, and Michael S. Murphey (with an uncredited polish from the...

In 2009, 20th Century Fox released a live-action Dragon Ball adaptation titled Dragon Ball Evolution -- a production widely considered to be one of the franchise's biggest failures. Consequently, Dragon Ball Super English voice star James Marsters took it upon himself to "apologize" to fans by discreetly taking on the role of a major character in Dragon Ball Super.
In Dragon Ball Evolution, Marsters co-starred alongside Justin Chatwin (Goku) as the Namekian warrior, Lord Piccolo. In a recent episode of Michael Rosenbaum's comedy podcast, "Inside of You," Marsters explained that, for Dragon Ball Super, he decided to take on his new character role under a different professional alias. "I changed my name. I just didn't want any credit on Dragon Ball because I wanted it to [only] be known to be people at conventions, like, real Dragon Ball superfans." Prior to his anime role, people often approached him to ask, "What happened?...

9-1-1 star Oliver Stark teases Buck's dynamic with Eddie, and Tommy's reaction to it, in the new season. 9-1-1 season 8 has officially debuted new episodes. Although the first of the three-part premiere is largely focused on introducing the season's bee-related disaster, there is a scene of Buck (Stark) and Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.) trying to help Eddie (Ryan Guzman) reconcile with his son.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Stark was asked about how Eddie has always been the person that Buck is most vulnerable with, and vice versa, and whether that would create any issues for Buck's boyfriend Tommy. In the quote below, Stark says that Eddie and his son Christopher are obviously hugely important in Bucks life. He adds that there is no jealousy from Tommy's side about Buck's closeness with Eddie:
No, I don't think so. I think we even see in the first episode...
