Animated films are some of the first pieces of fictional storytelling that young audiences are exposed to, having a deep impact on new generations' understanding of how narratives can impact them. The best animated movies, the ones that resonate with children and adults alike, are the ones that are able to entertain audiences young and old with stories that hide deeper meaning under the surface.
A few animated films were able to appear on Roger Ebert's coveted Great Movies list, a collection of a few hundred films that he felt stood the test of time and would remain important pieces of movie history. These animated films are the ones that best capture the human experience and deep emotional truths through one of the oldest mediums in the history of film.

Studio Ghibli films are known for their rich cast of characters, and what makes Ghibli characters so fascinating is how different each of them is. Diverse, well-written antagonists are just as important as the role of a protagonist, and Ghibli antagonists come in various personalities that make each film unique.
Each villain has their own moral compass and worldview, which shapes their decisions and what their goals are. Not all the goals are evil though. Some goals are based on a desire to protect, such as Fujimoto's desire to protect Ponyo, but many of them come from the willingness to control or harm, such as Muska's entitlement to power. Regardless of their motive, these antagonists shape the film in a great way to challenge the protagonists and leave viewers to think about their own morals.

Studio Ghibli has a reputation for creating beautifully crafted classic movies. Many children grew up watching My Neighbor Totoro and found that the film still held up for them when they watched it as an adult. There's something to appreciate about Studio Ghibli characters at every level.
Studio Ghibli heroes have cohesive character arcs, and good reasons for doing what they do. They may have complicated reasoning and worldviews borne of trauma and a need for justice, like San from Princess Mononoke. Other heroes, like Sophie Hatter from Howl's Moving Castle, don't want to be heroes at all and overcome their insecurities in creative but believable ways.
Lisa Is a Very Capable Individual in Ponyo Lisa Models Excellent Discernment for Her Son

The best anime wives are the most loving and compassionate characters. They would do anything to help their families and they adore their husbands and children. They are nurturing without being pushovers, and they are strict when necessary. Great anime wives aren't that difficult to come by, but some stand out among the rest.

I feel oddly unsure of my status as a reasonable adult for having enjoyed this film so much but that’s not going to stop me from giving a review on it. Ponyo!
The movie was awesome and if I was the only person over 3 feet in the theatre when I went to go see it then fine. I hold my head high in pride. Unlike a lot of English dubbed movies out there Ponyo was actually done very well. At no point did I cringe a little in my soul and wish for the Japanese voice talents along with some good subtitles.

Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki announced that the legendary Academy Award-winning animator Hayao Miyazaki’s next movie will be an autobiography. Suzuki stopped short though of saying whether it would be an autobiography of Miyazaki’s own life or of someone else’s. Suzuki spoke before a group of 200 people at the Museum of Contemporary Art at Tokyo with actress Tomoko Yamaguchi, who played Risa in Miyazaki’s last film, Ponyo. The museum is currently hosting an exhibition for the works of Canadian animator Frederic Back in conjunction with Ghibli. Ghibli staffers said they were surprised by Suzuki’s sudden announcement and said they couldn’t announce anything more than what had already been divulged. Ghibli has two films awaiting release in...

She is driven by an unyielding desire to see and experience the world that her father is trying so hard to protect her from – a world run by environmentally careless humans. Ponyo escapes her father’s grasp and ends up stuck in a bottle stranded on the shore of a small fishing town. Sōsuke – a five year-old boy who lives on a cliff high above the sea – rescues Ponyo; they are instantly enamored with each other and their fates permanently entwined.
