There are many pitfalls that can await a band on their musical journey, but losing a lead singer is usually curtains for a band's career. Standing front and center to take all applause and criticism, it is a difficult balance to keep both a band and one's self on the straight and narrow. Be it through tragedy, incident, or the classic trope of 'musical differences', losing a vocalist is such a difficult thing to survive for any musical ensemble.
Despite losing the sound and aesthetic that so often characterizes an artist's output, not all bands are resigned to the scrapheap when their vocalists depart. There are a select few bands who went on to find success with a new frontman, delivering classic records and sold out shows all over the world.

AC/DC’s iconic Back in Black album just earned two new certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), moving it into third place on the all-time list of best-selling albums in US history.
The 1980 album was certified 26-times platinum by the RIAA on July 8th and shortly thereafter 27-times platinum just a couple days ago on August 21st. The latter certification for shifting 27 million units put it ahead of the Eagles’ Hotel California on the list of the best-selling albums in the United States.
Don’t feel too bad for the Eagles, though, as their best-of collection Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) still remains No. 1 on the list with 38 million units moved. Michael Jackson’s Thriller is No. 2 at 34 million copies.
Worldwide, Back in Black is No. 2 with a reported 50 million copies sold, only trailing Thriller (an estimated 70 million units moved).

AC/DC closed out their 2024 comeback tour with a concert attended by over 82,000 people at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland.
The rock legends ran through a 21-song setlist, opening with a one-two punch of “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)” and “Back in Black.” The evening featured plenty of other hits spanning the band’s five-plus-decade career: “Thunderstruck,” “Hell’s Bells,” “High way to Hell,” “Dirty Deeds Done Dirty Cheap,” and “You Shook Me All Night Long,” among others.
The set also featured two cuts from the band’s 2020 album, Power Up (“Demon Fire” and “Shot in the Dark”), as well as some choice deep cuts from the discography such as “Riff Raff,” “Stiff Upper Lip,” “Shot Down in the Flames,” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Train.”
A truly explosive encore of “T.N.T.” and “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)” ended the evening and tour.

Rock legends AC/DC have hit another milestone, notching their first Diamond-certified single in the United States with “Thunderstruck.”
The song was certified Diamond by the RIAA after shifting 10 million equivalent units, which now includes both pure sales and streaming activity. Interestingly, the song hadn’t achieved any certification until now, with the RIAA awarding it Gold (for half a million units), Platinum (one million), and Diamond simultaneously.
Released in 1990 as the lead single and opening track on The Razor’s Edge, “Thunderstruck” has endured as one of AC/DC’s most recognizable songs with its frenetic fret-tapping intro by guitarist Angus Young and the anthemic shout-along gang vocals.
Not only has “Thunderstruck” remained a staple on classic rock radio and bar jukeboxes, but it has also become a mainstay at sporting events the world over. The intro to “Thunderstruck” can often be heard blaring from the Pa when a home...

Eddie Wilson could tell stories about the Armadillo World Headquarters, the storied Austin music venue he founded in 1970, for hours. He’ll tell you about how “nowhere else in the world” had ever treated Charlie Daniels so good, or the “phonebook thick” contract Zz Top made him sign, or maybe the times that names like Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, and Stevie Ray Vaughan performed there in the Seventies.
“We got one wonderful picture of Frank Zappa bending over a table with a razor blade,” Wilson recounts in his Texas twang.

Burgess, an Australian drummer, was recruited to form the band in 1973, along with Malcolm Young on rhythm guitar, his brother Angus on lead guitar, Dave Evans on vocals and Larry Van Kriedt on bass.
Burgess was fired from the band the following year, after his colleagues accused him of being drunk on stage; he later said his drink had been spiked. Although he left the band, he returned to fill drumming duties in 1975.
AC/DC said on their social media pages:
“Very sad to hear of the passing of Colin Burgess. He was our first drummer and a very respected musician. Happy memories, rock in peace Colin.”
No cause of death has yet been reported.

Colin Burgess, AC/DC’s original drummer, has died at the age of 77. The news was reported on AC/DC’s social media pages.
“Very sad to hear of the passing of Colin Burgess,” wrote AC/DC on Instagram. “He was our first drummer and a very respected musician. Happy memories, rock in peace Colin.”
Burgess was part of the original AC/DC lineup that formed in 1973 and included guitarists Malcolm and Angus Young, bassist/saxophonist Larry Van Kriedt, and singer Dave Evans. He appeared on the band’s debut single “Can I Sit Next to You, Girl,” but was fired from AC/DC in early 1974 for allegedly being drunk onstage, although he would claim that someone spiked his drink.
Prior to joining AC/DC, Burgess was a member of the Australian rock band The Masters Apprentices from 1968 to 1972, scoring a number of hits in the country during that time.
The leather jacket worn by Michael Jackson to film a Pepsi ad nearly 40 years ago has sold at a London auction for £250,000.
Jackson wore the jacket to film a Pepsi ad in 1984, hot off the heels of his record-breaking success with the Thriller album. The Pepsi ads became notorious for an incident in which Jackson’s hair caught fire while filming, leaving him with serious burns. He later said his pain medication for his injuries was what triggered his dependence on prescription medication.
The jacket was one of more than 20 items, including a jacket originally worn by George Michael and a hairpiece belonging to Amy Winehouse, plus items connected to David Bowie, Oasis and The Beatles, that were sold at auction Friday.
Other items in the auction included ones linked to Elvis Presley, Queen and Johnny Marr, formerly of The Smiths. There was also a Gibson guitar that previously belonged...

AC/DC played their first show in seven years on Saturday night (October 7th) at the Power Trip festival in Indio, California. The evening also featured a set by fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Judas Priest.
For this Power Trip gig, AC/DC’s lineup featured classic members Brian Johnson (vocals), Angus Young (lead guitar), and Cliff Williams (bass) alongside Stevie Young (rhythm guitar) and drummer Matt Laug.
Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden set the bar high at Power Trip the night before, but AC/DC were up to the challenge, showing no signs of rust as they ripped into “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It),” marking the first time they’ve ever kicked off a set with the Highway to Hell song.
From there, the 24-song set featured one classic after another, with the very next tune being the iconic “Back in Black,” followed by other favorites like “Thunderstruck,...

Toward the end of boygenius’ headlining set at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 2, Phoebe Bridgers asked the sold-out crowd for a favor. Could we all put away our phones for the next song? Remarkably, all but a scattering of contrarians complied.
“I was emboldened to write this song because I knew we were going to do this band,” Bridgers said, in one of many references to the rock-solid friendships at the heart of her collaboration with Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker. “And if you relate to it, I’m so sorry.

Classic members Brian Johnson (vocals), Cliff Williams (bass), and Phil Rudd (drums) all rejoined AC/DC for their 2020 album Power Up. However, Rudd won’t be behind the kit when the band performs its first show in seven years on October 7th at the Power Trip festival in Indio, California.
On Saturday (September 9th), AC/DC posted rehearsal audio on their social pages (see below), with the caption: “Pwr Up for Power Trip! Listen to the rehearsal of the boys powering up with Cliff Williams, who’s coming out of retirement for the festival and Matt Laug on drums.”
Laug is a veteran drummer who has played with Alanis Morissette, Alice Cooper, and Slash’s Snakepit, among other acts. Most notably, he performed on several tracks on Morissette’s multiplatinum album Jagged Little Pill.
No reason was given for Rudd’s absence. The drummer had previously been replaced by Chris Slade...

AC/DC are revving up for their first concert in seven years at Indio, California’s Power Trip in October, and on Saturday the hard rock legends announced some surprise lineup changes, including the return of longtime bassist Cliff Williams.
Following the conclusion of the band’s Rock or Bust Tour in 2016 — an ill-fated trek that required the services of Axl Rose after singer Brian Johnson bowed out with hearing loss issues — Williams announced his retirement from AC/DC.

American actor Angus Young got an emotional farewell at his hometown of Oakland with a candlelight vigil paying tribute to the late ‘Euphoria’ star. According to TMZ, the town’s local artiste Darin Balaban, painted a 9-foot-tall mural on the wall of an Oakland car wash with over 50 people showing up at the mural for a candlelight vigil, with many bringing flowers and pictures of Angus and placing them at the base of the wall.
Others brought liquor and beer, then the group began playing music, sang songs together, danced and exchanged stories as part of both paying tribute and celebrating Angus’ life and legacy at the mural.
The whole town witnessed a mix of silence and cheers, as the area lit up with the small flames of candle light in a beautifully heartfelt moment to the young actor who passed away at the age of 25. There were tears at...

Back to the Future’s ending paid homage to several well-known rock icons. The 1985 time travel movie is remembered for a number of key scenes, not the least of which being the school dance where Marty played a rock song in front of a crowd of teenagers in 1955. Played by Michael J. Fox, Marty performed a now-famous rendition of a classic Chuck Berry song to ensure that his parents fell in love on the dance floor.
As a story centered around a high school student from the 1980s stuck in a 1950s community, Robert Zemeckis' Back to the Future was filled with moments that highlighted the stark contrast between the two periods. One of the differences, of course, was the music. Even though rock’n’roll was right around the corner with Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, and Berry being some of the most popular musicians of the decade, Marty turned...

They’ve come a long way from “MMMBop” — and “MMMBop” wasn’t even close to their genesis.
In truth, Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson formed their band in 1992, when youngest member Zac (who is actually the third born of seven children) was only 6 years old. So while 2017 may mark 20 years of loyalty even for the most dedicated of Fansons — who first became acquainted with the towheaded brothers over the summer of 1997 during the time of their breakout album Middle of Nowhere and subsequent sold-out arena concerts, Saturday Night Live appearance, Christmas album and adorable Eggo commercial — for Hanson, it’s...

AC/DC might be heading down that "Highway to Hell" again to perform some "Dirty Deeds" that will shake you "All Night Long" and leave you "Thunderstruck." While the hard rock legends have been relatively quiet since 2008, due to guitarist Angus Young's health problems, singer Brian Johnson says AC/DC is potentially touring in 2014. In a post on his site about the "Cars That Rock," the upcoming U.K. TV series he's hosting, Johnson casually mentions, "it looks very likely that we will be on the road again before the end of the year. So stand by for more music." Of course, nothing is set in stone, but be on the lookout for more updates. AC/DC's most recent album was 2008's "Black Ice. The live collection "Live at River Plate" followed in 2012. ...

Uncle Creepy brought me on board here at Dread Central earlier this year, and I've been truly having a blast writing for all you gorehounds. However, there is something I've been dying to write about but had to wait for the right time. Well, it's that time, Halloween time, and I'm finally getting my chance to write about one of my favorite websites, Zombie Pumpkins, easily one of the greatest Halloween sites around.
Site owner, pumpkin pattern designer and basic jack-of-all-trades badass Ryan Wickstrand has been overlord of the pumpkin carving world since 2003, and he continues to improve and add to the site every year. And not only is Wickstrand a brilliant artist when it comes to designing patterns, he's a gorehound himself (and fan of Dread Central)! Wickstrand's love of horror is blatantly obvious in the patterns he creates. Yes, he has the obligatory Elmo, Kermit the Frog and...

To celebrate our newly unveiled Music section, we’re dusting off some of the older posts dedicated to that area of things, starting with this early offering from yours truly, which was about article number five after I joined what was then ObsessedWithFilm. Great to see I haven’t developed in any way…
Rumour has it that actors all want to be rock stars, the same way that musicians seek the “next level” of their career by turning their hand to acting. Whether that’s strictly true or not is a matter for debate, but what is certain is that the two trends have often combined to make both cinematic music videos (just ask 30 Seconds to Mars), but also to offer the magical sight of some of the world’s greatest acting talents (I’m not saying that’s true of everyone down below) getting their glam on in those videos.

This morning, we presented to you images from the GQ photo-spread of Lea Michelle and Dianna Agron, which involved the very dated and trite school-girl uniform cliché, even though they don't wear school uniforms on "Glee" (talk about misrepresentation!).
The recurring complaints about those images were 1) that Lea Michelle is trying too hard; 2) that the photographer, Terry Richardson, has a pedophilia obsession; 3) the sexy school girl thing is done; and 4) why isn't Cory Montieth dressed suggestively? You know, for the ladies to pant over, and the men to complain about?
I wanted to do you all a solid, and turn the cliché around by featuring the most suggestive school boy uniform images I could find from popular culture. Unfortunately, the school boy uniform doesn't really lend itself to suggestiveness. Boys in uniforms in the spread eagle pose just doesn't have the same Joie de vivre. In this respect, women got fucked on the turnabout.
