When Bob's Burgers first hit screens in 2011, it was clear that the show wanted to do something different. While its competitors, like Family Guy and The Simpsons, wanted to show a more bleak side of family life, Bob's Burgers charmed its audience with its adorable domestics. The Belcher family is built on love, and that's what makes them one of the best-animated tribes on television.
Yet, not every character is as cheerful as the Belchers. Some characters act as contrasts to the family, proving to the audience that sadness and injustice still reside in this colorful fictional world. This is why we can’t have nice things. Disney+ announced today that it will not move forward with a second season of the action-fantasy series American Born Chinese. The decision to cancel the series comes seven months after Disney debuted the eight-episode series on its streaming service, Disney+. The cancelation is raising a red flag for fans of the series, as Disney tends to purge content from Disney+ to save money and digital real estate. We’ve seen the mouse-eared streamer purge content before, with shows like Willow, Turner & Hooch, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, The Mysterious Benedict Society, and more. According to Deadline, options on the cast expired yesterday. However, there could be a silver lining to this disappointing news. 20th Television still plans to shop the series to other outlets, giving the show a chance to live again through another platform.

Disney+ will not be continuing the story of American Born Chinese, with the streamer cancelling its adaptation of the hit graphic novel after one season, TVLine has confirmed. The news will come as a blow to fans considering the Season 1 finale ended on a whopper of a cliffhanger.
The series’ one-and-done season — all eight episodes of which dropped last May — followed a mythological god (played by Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh) whose life becomes entangled with an average American teenager (played by Ben Wang). The ensemble also included Yeoh’s Everything Everywhere All At Once castmates, fellow Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu.

“American Born Chinese” has been canceled after one season at Disney+, Variety has learned.
According to an individual with knowledge of the decision, Disney was high on the creative of the series, but its viewership did not justify greenlighting a second season. The producers plan to shop the series to other outlets.
“American Born Chinese” debuted on Disney+ on May. The Disney Branded Television series was based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang. Disney+ is not proceeding with a second season of Disney Branded Television/20th Television’s action fantasy series American Born Chinese, which stars Oscar winners Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh.

Twenty years after its first season aired on MTV, Clone High has returned to the airwaves to make audiences laugh, shiver and cry. Season 2 sees angst-filled teens Abe Lincoln (Will Forte), Joan of Arc (Nicole Sullivan) and JFK (Christopher Miller) revived in the modern era, facing a new world of changing social landscapes and new technology. Joining them on this journey are new clones of Frida Kahlo (Vicci Martinez), Harriet Tubman (Ayo Edibiri), Confucius (Kelvin Yu) and Christopher Columbus (Neil Young), who tries to distance himself from his controversial "clonefather" by taking the name Topher Bus.
However, not all of Clone High's main students have made the transition to 2023. Ghandi (Michael McDonald) has been written out of the series, owing to the controversial nature of the character. His absence is explained by the rest of the cast simply forgetting to unfreeze him along with the other students. Cleopatra, meanwhile, has made the jump to modernity,...

American Born Chinese, now streaming on Disney+, is an action comedy series that's packed with as much sweetness as it is sucker punches. Based on Gene Luen Yang's highly-acclaimed 2006 graphic novel of the same name, it takes the coming-of-age story of one introspective teenager and spins it into an epic tale of mythic proportions. Of course, doing so means spinning more plates than it can sometimes handle, but showrunner Kelvin Yu and director Destin Daniel Cretton (who helmed the premiere and finale) keep things on track by combining a very pleasing aesthetic with warmhearted performances by a star-studded cast.
Much of the initial charm and fascination of American Born Chinese comes from its depiction of Heaven, which is filled with iconic figures of Chinese mythology such as the "Monkey King," Sun Wukong (played by Daniel Wu), and appearances by a large chunk of the Everything Everywhere All At Once cast in important roles.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller admitted that Clone High's controversial first season and cancelation almost ended their careers.
After making its debut on MTV, Clone High was embroiled in controversy due to the animated sitcom’s depiction of Gandhi, which led to a hunger strike in India. American Born Chinese is now streaming on Disney+, and season 1 skillfully takes audiences through young Jin's (Ben Wang) hero journey while also introducing them to iconic figures from Chinese mythology. Jin's cautious way of life is thrown into chaos when he meets transfer student Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu), whose overconfidence stems from his heritage as the son of the Monkey King. The latter, believing that Jin holds the key to saving Heaven, drags his friend into a world of powerful gods and destined missions — but all Jin wants is to ask out new girl Amelia (Sydney Taylor).

“Clone High,” the animated MTV cult classic about a high school devoted to teenage clones of historical figures from creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller (the “Spider-Verse” franchise) and Bill Lawrence (“Ted Lasso”), returns with new episodes on Max 20 years after the cancellation of its sole season. The core group has thawed to confront a more complicated world of social media and new cultural norms, where “Riverdale” has replaced “Dawson’s Creek” as the coming-of-age template, complete with slightly more adult humor and even sillier situations — and fewer executive notes since the creators now wield greater power.
Back are Abe Lincoln (Will Forte), Cleopatra (Mitra Jouhari replacing Christa Miller), JFK (Chris Miller), and Joan of Arc (Nicole Sullivan). They are joined by new clone classmates Harriet Tubman (Ayo Edebiri), Frida Kahlo (Vicci Martinez), Confucius (Kelvin Yu), Topher Bus (Neil Casey as a canceled Christopher Columbus), and Sacagawea (Jana Schmieding). However, party...

It’s hard to pin down the identity of “American Born Chinese,” the new live action adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s acclaimed graphic novel of the same name from creator Kelvin Yu. Is it a fantasy epic of warring ancient gods? A modern-day high school romp about a second generation Chinese American teenager trying desperately to fit in? A tender examination of multigenerational trauma and the scars that can unwittingly be passed on from parents to children?
The answer is all of the above and, as you may expect, it comes with mixed results. At its best, “American Born Chinese” is a delightful and refreshing exploration of diasporic identity, a thrilling martial arts fantasy and a heartwarming tale of family and friendship. However, the series’ disparate storytelling styles don’t often blend as seamlessly as we might like, making the whole show just a bit less effective than the sum of its parts.

A popular reading of superhero mania holds that it’s our era’s substitute for shared mythology; instead of Zeus shooting lightning bolts from Mount Olympus, we have Cyclops shooting beams from his eyeballs. So it’s fitting that the coming-of-age tale “American Born Chinese” streams on Disney+, the service that’s a one-stop shop for all things Marvel; Destin Daniel Cretton of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” the first Marvel film to star an Asian American hero, even directs the pilot. But “American Born Chinese” flips the script: rather than use superheroes for modern-day mythmaking, it infuses centuries-old myths into genres now dominated by superheroes.
