J.J. Abrams (“The Force Awakens”) and showrunner Latoya Morgan’s (“Shameless”) new series “Duster” will debut May 15, with the first official trailer teasing an increasingly dangerous crime syndicate.

Starring Josh Holloway (“Lost”), Rachel Hilson and Keith David (“The Thing”), “Duster” is set in the 1970s Southwest as a getaway driver gets entangled in a crime network that is threatened by the arrival of a young agent in town. Hilson stars as the first Black female FBI agent.

“Duster” was produced in association with Warner Bros. Television, with the eight episodes dropping weekly through the finale on July 3. The first two episodes are written by Abrams and Morgan, with Abrams and Rachel Rusch Rich executive producing for Bad Robot while Morgan executive produces for TinkerToy Productions.

Disney+ will not be continuing the story of American Born Chinese, with the streamer cancelling its adaptation of the hit graphic novel after one season, TVLine has confirmed. The news will come as a blow to fans considering the Season 1 finale ended on a whopper of a cliffhanger.

The series’ one-and-done season — all eight episodes of which dropped last May — followed a mythological god (played by Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh) whose life becomes entangled with an average American teenager (played by Ben Wang). The ensemble also included Yeoh’s Everything Everywhere All At Once castmates, fellow Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu.

“American Born Chinese” has been canceled after one season at Disney+, Variety has learned.

According to an individual with knowledge of the decision, Disney was high on the creative of the series, but its viewership did not justify greenlighting a second season. The producers plan to shop the series to other outlets.

“American Born Chinese” debuted on Disney+ on May. The Disney Branded Television series was based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang. The official logline states that the show “chronicles the trials and tribulations of a regular American teenager whose life is forever changed when he befriends the son of a mythological god.”

The cast of the series included Ben Wang, Michelle Yeoh, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Jimmy Liu, Ke Huy Quan, Sydney Taylor, and Daniel Wu. The show received positive reviews from critics, with the first season holding a 94% approval rating based on 51 reviews.

Disney+ is not proceeding with a second season of Disney Branded Television/20th Television’s action fantasy series American Born Chinese, which stars Oscar winners Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh.

The decision comes more than seven months after the eight-episode first season was released May 24. It also comes after the options on the cast expired yesterday, I hear. 20th Television still plans to shop the series elsewhere.

Created by Kelvin Yu based on Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel, American Born Chinese had an impeccable timing, launching on the heels of the 2023 awards season that saw Yeoh and Quan win trophy after trophy for their movie Everything Everywhere All at Once, culminating with both of them landing Oscars in March.

American Born Chinese, now streaming on Disney+, is an action comedy series that's packed with as much sweetness as it is sucker punches. Based on Gene Luen Yang's highly-acclaimed 2006 graphic novel of the same name, it takes the coming-of-age story of one introspective teenager and spins it into an epic tale of mythic proportions. Of course, doing so means spinning more plates than it can sometimes handle, but showrunner Kelvin Yu and director Destin Daniel Cretton (who helmed the premiere and finale) keep things on track by combining a very pleasing aesthetic with warmhearted performances by a star-studded cast.

Much of the initial charm and fascination of American Born Chinese comes from its depiction of Heaven, which is filled with iconic figures of Chinese mythology such as the "Monkey King," Sun Wukong (played by Daniel Wu), and appearances by a large chunk of the Everything Everywhere All At Once cast in important roles.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller admitted that Clone High's controversial first season and cancelation almost ended their careers.

After making its debut on MTV, Clone High was embroiled in controversy due to the animated sitcom’s depiction of Gandhi, which led to a hunger strike in India. Because of this intense response, the network had no choice but to pull the series from broadcast. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, long-time collaborators Lord and Miller opened up about the aftermath of Clone High’s 2003 cancelation, revealing that it definitely impacted their mental health with Lord recalling how he "had to go to a psychiatrist" because he hadn't slept in seven days.

It’s hard to pin down the identity of “American Born Chinese,” the new live action adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s acclaimed graphic novel of the same name from creator Kelvin Yu. Is it a fantasy epic of warring ancient gods? A modern-day high school romp about a second generation Chinese American teenager trying desperately to fit in? A tender examination of multigenerational trauma and the scars that can unwittingly be passed on from parents to children?

The answer is all of the above and, as you may expect, it comes with mixed results. At its best, “American Born Chinese” is a delightful and refreshing exploration of diasporic identity, a thrilling martial arts fantasy and a heartwarming tale of family and friendship. However, the series’ disparate storytelling styles don’t often blend as seamlessly as we might like, making the whole show just a bit less effective than the sum of its parts.

A popular reading of superhero mania holds that it’s our era’s substitute for shared mythology; instead of Zeus shooting lightning bolts from Mount Olympus, we have Cyclops shooting beams from his eyeballs. So it’s fitting that the coming-of-age tale “American Born Chinese” streams on Disney+, the service that’s a one-stop shop for all things Marvel; Destin Daniel Cretton of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” the first Marvel film to star an Asian American hero, even directs the pilot. But “American Born Chinese” flips the script: rather than use superheroes for modern-day mythmaking, it infuses centuries-old myths into genres now dominated by superheroes.
