Lewis Tan reflects on his first Mortal Kombat role before he joined the 2021 big-screen adaptation, sharing a new photo from the unreleased web series Mortal Kombat X: Generations. The actor starred in the Warner Bros. adaptation of the popular fighting game franchise as the original character Cole Young, an Mma fighter and descendant of the ninja who would become Scorpion. Having been dragged into the inter-realm tournament and survived the battle, Cole is left to gather new allies, heading to Hollywood to recruit Johnny Cage in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 .
After many requests, Tan shares photos from the unreleased Mortal Kombat X: Generations, a web series that would presumably later be compiled as a film for a home release. They include a shot of him in costume as Kung Jin, a relative of Kung Lao featured later in Netherealm's rebooted video game timeline, with the actor joking that he...

Keanu Reeves has been at the forefront of some of cinema's most important franchises, including "The Matrix" and "John Wick." Even one of his biggest bombs has, against all odds, also become a franchise. Reeves starred in Universal's tremendously expensive blockbuster "47 Ronin" back in 2013. It was a major flop at the time and actually hurt the actor's career a bit. But nearly a full decade later, everything came full circle, and a sequel to that flop was released. Yes, was! As in, it already came out ... last year.
"Blade of the 47 Ronin" is a sequel to the movie in question, and debuted in 2022. One would be forgiven for not realizing it, as it wasn't quite as big as the original, to put it mildly. Unfortunately, Reeves didn't return for the follow-up, but for those who enjoyed that film, there is a sequel out there you can watch right now.

The 16th century literary classic Journey to the West is the mother of all Chinese fantasy. The mythological saga has spawned countless adaptations in various media across Asia and beyond, from the cult late ‘70s Japanese TV series to Peking Opera, videogames, graphic novels and a stage spectacle with a score by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and design elements by Gorillaz illustrator Jamie Hewlett.
Prominent among the innumerable film versions is the 2013 blockbuster Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, directed by Stephen Chow. A similar livewire action-comedy energy infuses Netflix’s The Monkey King, a children’s animated feature based on the sprawling novel’s most popular strand, on which Chow serves as executive producer.

But sure enough, Universal 1440 Entertainment, the company’s direct-to-video department, has come up with Blade of the 47 Ronin, a modern-day sequel to the Keanu Reeves samurai epic. And they said there’s no such thing as The Great Pumpkin.
Somewhere in Budapest Yurei kills Arai thought to be the last in the bloodline of those who wielded the Blade of the 47 Ronin. But as he kills him he senses the existence of another heir.
As the other clans argue over what to do about the sword and the prophecy attached to it, Onami one of Lord Shinshiro’s onna-bugeisha reaches out to Reo.

Here’s a sequel I’m willing to bet you forgot was coming, because I certainly did. It was announced over two years ago that Universal Pictures was developing a sequel to 47 Ronin, the 2013 action/fantasy movie that starred Keanu Reeves as a half-Japanese, half-English outcast who joins forces with a group of ronin out to avenge the death of their master. The film was one of the biggest box-office bombs of the year, which made the announcement of a sequel all the more puzzling, but here we are. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment have released an extended clip from Blade of the 47 Ronin, which you can check out above.

Mortal Kombat is one of the most iconic video games of all time. It has a lengthy, genre-defining legacy that’s withstood the test of time in several mediums. Actors Courtenay Taylor and Ron Yuan, who voice Kira and Sub-Zero, respectively, in the Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind animated film, understand this. Taylor (widely known for voicing Jack in Mass Effect and Ada Wong in Resident Evil) is no stranger to joining a well-respected franchise. The same goes for Yuan, who has been in a slew of television and film throughout the years and recently joined the Mk Universe in full as the new Scorpion in Mortal Kombat 11. In the video above, both cast members sat down with Emily Aslanian in the TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine New York Comic Con 2022 suite to talk about Snow Blind, what fans will love about it, and being huge fans of the franchise themselves,...

Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind is the third and latest installment of the Warner Bros. animated franchise following Scorpion’s Revenge and Battle of the Realms. And it wastes no time getting right into the bloody action. Literally in the first minute of the film a convoy of vehicles pulls looking like it rolled out of one of the better Road Warrior rip-offs smashes through the gates of a town. The occupants begin slicing off heads, ripping out spines, impaling and incinerating the residents in gruesome detail. King Kano and the Black Dragons have arrived, ironically telling the survivors they’re here to protect them in return for a small tax.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is getting set to unleash their new animated Mortal Kombat movie, this one titled Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind and releasing this year.
Rick Morales directed Snow Blind, written by Jeremy Adams.
In Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind, “Kano is hellbent on taking over Earthrealm, viciously attacking town after town with the aid of three cold-blooded Black Dragon mercenaries. Those who don’t submit are annihilated. One young man won’t bend the knee to Kano: Kenshi.
“Cocky and undisciplined, Kenshi loses both his eyesight and his confidence after Kano and his clan attack him. Kenshi then comes under the tutelage of Kuai Liang, now retired and reluctant to train Kenshi – but also the only fighter powerful enough to challenge Kano.
“Along the way, Kenshi rediscovers the hope he had lost and a possible path to redemption … but will that be enough to stop Kano and save Earthrealm?...

Production wraps this week in Hungary on “Blade of the 47 Ronin,” a sequel to Universal’s 2013 Japanese-themed action classic “47 Ronin.” The new movie represents a substantial revamp that emphasizes Asian fantasy heroes and female characters and addresses some of the cultural criticisms of the previous Keanu Reeves-starring picture.
The action is moved forward by some 300 years to present-day Budapest, which is intended as a metaphor for East-West confluence, and where a meeting of the five Samurai clans is taking place. In addition to the male clan leaders, the meeting is also attended by three Onna Bugeisha (literally ‘Women Warriors’), though their presence is initially resented.
Production was handled by Universal Studios through its 1440 Productions unit for Netflix. The streamer is expected to release it sometime in 2022, though a specific date is still unknown.
The existence of female Samurai who fought alongside their male colleagues in feudal Japan is well documented.

In the 1980s and 1990s, three promising young kung fu fighters trained with the notorious Sifu Cheung (Roger Yuan), becoming his only official disciples. However, their story didn’t have a great outcome; currently the so-called Three Tigers have other concerns, kung fu is a mere memory for them. Danny (Alain Uy) is a divorced father, more focused on his day job than on his little son (Joziah Lagonoy). Hing (Ron Yuan) gained weight and never fully recovered from an accident that damaged one of his legs. Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) is the Tiger who has stayed in better shape, though he now practices Brazilian jiu jitsu. Our protagonists meet again after their former teacher and father figure passes away, apparently of a heart attack, although...

Martial arts movies remain contentious in Asian American cinema. On one hand, the likes of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan have made major breakthroughs in the US; thanks to their kung fu movies from the 20th century, Hollywood realized that Asians too are excellent leads. On the other hand, however, the same films have molded into an unbreakable ceiling for Asian American actors. Stereotypes of sagely shifu and nunchuck-wielding warriors have since been well baked-in, the most recent “Mortal Kombat” (2021) notwithstanding.
Quoc Bao Tran’s “The Paper Tigers” (2020) enters the fray with a charming spin on an age-old trope. This production too had initially faced funding resistance. Critics denounced “yet another” Asian American martial arts movie, clamoring for other forms of representation. Upon viewing, however, these arguments seem redundant, if not ironic. “The Paper Tigers” is anything but. While it plays with the usual tropes of kung fu comedy, the...

The first thing you should know about Tran Quoc Bao’s “The Paper Tigers” is that his low-budget kung fu comedy — the heartfelt tale of three arthritic middle-aged Seattle men reuniting to avenge the murdered sifu who mentored them as teenagers — is often just as winning and delightful as you would hope from its premise. Unfolding like , Tran’s debut feature delivers a ton of charm for a kung fu throwback, and kicks a lot of ass for a broad comedy about some old guys relearning how to honor each other and fight for themselves.
If “The Paper Tigers” sags around the middle and loses its focus as it limps towards a finale that doesn’t hit with the force that it should, well, perhaps that’s to be expected from a martial arts movie whose heroes can’t throw a punch without pulling a muscle.

With only a couple of clicks of the dial and a little dash of hybrid vigor, the hackneyed can be made fresh again, a point proven by Tran Quoc Bao’s silly and special little kung fu comedy “The Paper Tigers.” Balancing the naive structure of an old Shaw Brothers movie (a vengeance mission with an escalating series of fights en route to the Big Boss showdown) with the kind of male-midlife-comedy schtick that bought Judd Apatow a house or six, Tran’s irresistibly good-humored debut is a diverting blend of Hong Kong and Hollywood that delivers, on a slender, Kickstarter-enhanced budget, a rousing roundhouse hug to both traditions.

Alain Uy (True Detective), Ron Yuan (Mulan), Mykel Shannon Jenkins (Undisputed III), Matthew Page (“Enter the Dojo” – Master Ken), Andy Le (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Yuji Okumoto (“Cobra Kai” & Karate Kid II)

As teenagers, kung fu disciples Danny (Alain Uy), Hing (Ron Yuan) and Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) were inseparable. But when their old master is murdered, the trio reunites, soon learning that avenging their sifu will require conquering old grudges (and a dangerous hitman still armed with ample knee cartilage) if they are to honorably defend his legacy.

"When the hands cross... all will be revealed." Well Go USA has released an official trailer for a martial arts action comedy titled The Paper Tigers, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Quoc Bao Tran. This premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival last year, then stopped by numerous other festivals in the fall including the Busan, Hawaii, and Asian American Film Festival. Three Kung Fu prodigies have grown into washed-up, middle-aged men, now one kick away from pulling their hamstrings. But when their master is murdered, they must juggle their dead-end jobs, dad duties, and old grudges to avenge his death. The film stars Alain Uy, Ron Yuan, Mykel Shannon Jenkins, Matthew Page, Andy Le, and Yuji Okumoto. This already looks like an indie cult classic!! Seems like a fun throwback and a clever Kung Fu dark comedy. Here's the official US trailer (+ posters) for Quoc Bao Tran's The Paper Tigers,...

Exclusive: Well Go USA Entertainment has acquired the North American rights to Bao Tran’s action comedy The Paper Tigers and has slated a theatrical release in Spring 2021.
Written and directed by Tran, the movie is an homage to Seattle’s martial arts scene from the 1970s and 1980s as well as the legendary Bruce Lee. The story follows Danny (Alain Uy of Helstrom), Hing (Ron Yuan of Mulan) and Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins of Undisputed III) who, as teenagers were kung fu prophecies and were inseparable. After graduation, the trio drifted apart due to a mysterious fallout at an overseas tournament. Fast forward 25 years, and they are now adults — washed up middle-aged men to be specific. They are one kick away from pulling a hamstring and not at all preoccupied with thoughts of martial arts or childhood best friends. That all changes when their old master is murdered and...
