Mort from Madagascar is an example of how the franchise's animals come in all shapes and sizes, from zoo animals to those found in the jungles and forests. Madagascar remains one of DreamWorks most successful animated franchises and has produced three movies, one spin-off film, three TV shows, a handful of shorts, and a series of video games. The three main movies in the franchise Madagascar (2005), Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2008), and Madagascar 3: Europes Most Wanted (2012) follow the adventures of a quartet of animals from Central Park Zoo after theyre released from captivity.
The main Madagascar characters are voiced by an all-star cast, including Ben Stiller as Alex the lion, Chris Rock as a zebra named Marty, David Schwimmer as Melman the giraffe, and Jada Pinkett Smith as hippopotamus Gloria. A whole host of cute and funny animals make up the minor Madagascar characters, too, including four Adlie penguins named...

Penguins of Madagascar moves toward an interesting take on the sequel genre, if there is such a thing, by creating a spin-off film, from characters that have already had a spin-off show. Such is the appeal of the Madagascar films (though the straight sequels have had varying levels of success), that both the penguins and King Julien have managed animated series, and there’s something to be said for the idea that if people love the penguin characters we should run with that.
The film bases its plot on the dueling ideas that Private is fed up with having no role in the crew, and that the penguins in general, and then to another level of “in general,” have taken the spotlight off of a certain octopus.

Penguins of Madagascar was unlucky when it came to looking back over the year, because it was overshadowed by other animated efforts in a year that was just lousy with surprisingly strong animated releases. But, it’s not a movie you should let slip past, and is one that will certainly be a rewatch staple for younger audiences for a long time.

Gloriously bonkers. Like, Looney Tunes levels of cartoon madness. You will laugh your homo sapiens head off. I’m “biast” (pro): mostly love the Madagascar movies, really love the penguins
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

The hilarious paramilitary penguins of the Madagascar flicks have their own movie, and it is gloriously bonkers. Like, Looney Tunes levels of cartoon madness. You will laugh your homo sapiens head off. Penguins of Madagascar is closest in tone to what I called the “animated anarchy” of the third film, Europe’s Most Wanted… about which, I said two years ago, it felt as if the “cool, smooth nonsense of the penguins’ outrageous schemes… was allowed to take over the entire film.” Now this has actually happened, and there was much rejoicing. The plot is entirely superfluous. All you need to know is that...

DreamWorks Animation spins Madagascar's penguins out into a funny spy caper of their own. Comes with bonus Werner Herzog.
When it comes to the Madagascar series of films, there are the main characters, and then there are those scene-stealing penguins. They're the secret bedrock of the series, the funniest characters in the bunch, the consistent comic relief who both ground the films and heighten the craziness of the shenanigans and goings-on. It's not a surprise that the penguins have been the stars of most of the Madagascar spin-offs, including their own television series and a bunch of specials. It's not a surprise that, with the Madagascar gang having wrapped up a pretty solid trilogy of entertaining flicks, that the first spin-off be given to the comic relief.

Throughout the first Madagascar film, four cuddly penguins remained on the sidelines, waddling onscreen whenever comic relief was needed. In 2008, the penguins were given their own television show but limited profits caused it to be cancelled in 2012, after only three seasons. Now, directors Eric Darnell (Madagascar) and Simon J. Smith (Bee Movie) have decided to give the beloved penguins another go in their own film, entitled Penguins of Madagascar.
We open up with a prologue detailing how the four penguins came together. As soon as the voice-over narration by Werner Herzog is heard, audience should know what they’re in for, and that’s material that can be enjoyed by both children and adults alike. As Herzog’s documentary crew observes, Kowalski (Chris Miller) and Rico (Conrad Vernon) are trailing their leader Skipper (Tom McGrath) along a line of other penguins. As the trio is marching, an egg rolls by.

The modern box office is filled with sequels and reboots, and now even animated franchises are getting their own spinoffs, but can they be just as funny?
The Madagascar series has proved to be hugely popular since its debut in 2005, with the four penguins - Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Rico - standing out as some of the most loved minor characters.
Following on from their own Nickelodeon spinoff TV series - which has a separate continuity from the films in case you were intrigued - the four heroes embark on their own adventure away from their Madagascar friends and, surprisingly, it works.

Tim here. I’m going to spend most of the remaining weeks of 2014 taking a look at some of the 20 films submitted to for the Best Animated Feature Oscar. These will mainly be the little underdogs that don’t really have a chance for a nomination, but deserve our attention as lovers of movies anyway.
But first, a different kind of film that doesn’t have a chance at receiving any Oscar buzz: this week’s new Penguins of Madagascar, the 30th release by DreamWorks Animation, and the last wide-release animated feature of the year. If I may confess my sins to all of you, I was actually looking forward to this, kind of: the penguins of the Madagascar film trilogy have been reliable stand-outs for as long as the franchise has existed: a wacky military squadron comprised of an ebullient Skipper (Tom McGrath), no-nonsense Kowalski (Chris Miller), wide-eyed moron Private (Christopher Knights), and demented,...

20th Century Fox and DreamWorks Animation released their new comedy/animation film, "Penguins of Madagascar," into theaters this past Wednesday and all the top, major critics have submitted their reviews. It turns out that about half the group liked it with mixed results. It got an overall 53 score out of a possible 100 across 30 reviews at the Metacritic.com site. The film stars: John Malkovich, Chris Miller, Peter Stormare, Tom McGrath, Ken Jeong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Annet Mahendru and Christopher Knights. We've posted blurbs from a couple of the critics, below. Michael O'Sullivan from the Washington Post, gave it a nice 88 score, stating: " The screenplay by John Aboud, Michael Colton and Brandon Sawyer has a fizzy, pop-culture pizazz, tempered by a distinctly vaudeville sensibility. It’s smart, but not brainy; dumb, but never inane." Walter Addiego over at the San Francisco Chronicle, gave it a 78 grade. He stated: " There’s plenty here to tickle the kids,...

Chicago – The only thing rarer than a spinoff that soars over its inspiration is a DreamWorks Animation production without “Dragon” in the title, and one that’s actually worth watching. Improbably, “Penguins Of Madagascar” is both.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
To be honest, I’ve felt the “Madagascar” series to be typical of DreamWorks decidedly second-tier status in the field of animation. They lacked the imagination of Pixar’s best efforts, and settled for the usual collection of celebrity voices and overly hyperactive animation, topped off with a generic frenetic dance sequence that fades from memory before the beat even stops. While “Penguins” doesn’t exactly set itself apart per se, it does freshen up the formula and shows why it became popular in the first place.
This film sends the quartet of Skipper, Kowalski, Private, and Rico into their own secret agent spy adventure beginning with an inventive heist at Fort Knox.

DreamWorks’ Penguins Of Madagascar will leave kids in stitches… while older audience members are left bored, with few laughs.
The penguins of Madagascar are back with an all new adventure. Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private, along with a new group of elite operatives group called The North Wind, are on a mission, to save the penguins of the world after the villainous Dr. Octavius Brine sets his plan of destruction into motion. A world without penguins? Oh, my!
The ‘Penguins of Madagascar’ television series seems to go over rather well, and the film does too… for children. There are funny puns that will make audiences chuckle, but for the most part I was left spiritless. Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, Conrad Vernon and Christopher Knights really do work together well, and are humorous to watch (listen to) as the penguins. It would have been very easy for the studio to bump them for A-list names,...

First, let's state the obvious and get it out of the way. This is a crass piece of corporate product, an animation studio working more as an IP farm than as a storytelling unit, and it exists so that Dreamworks Animation can continue to wring money out of the "Madagascar" franchise. It is a perfect example of marketing driving the machine. It's also a profoundly silly movie that really isn't even trying to play by the conventional rules of family animation. They nod to creating a sentimental arc between Private (Christopher Knights) and Skipper (Tom McGrath), but they don't dwell on it, and they handle it with a fairly deft touch. The main goal of the movie is just to be ridiculous, and it does that in spades. The film starts with the penguins in their natural habitat, being filmed by a documentary film crew complete with the actual Werner Herzog narrating.

Penguins of Madagascar waddles onto screens this holiday week, a spinoff of DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar animated franchise. But as I say in my video review above, this film focuses on just one corner of that franchise’s winning collection of critters, the scheming pack of penguins. And it never quite takes flight, despite its manic pace and an evil octopus (!) voiced wonderfully by John Malkovich.
Other voice cast members include the seemingly omnipresent Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom McGrath (director of the three Madagascar films), Chris Miller (Puss in Boots director), Christopher Knights and Conrad Vernon (director of Shrek 2 and Monsters vs. Aliens).
The film was directed by Eric Darnell and Simon J. Smith, from a script fashioned by McGrath, Brandon Sawyer, Eric Darnell, John Aboud and Michael Colton. Producers are Laura Breay and Mark Swift.

Can scene-stealers carry a movie? Or do some characters only work best in small doses? Even though they don't have big-name voice actors, the espionage-minded penguins from the Madagascar franchise have consistently been more appealing than the central characters. They almost feel like they're more for the adults in the audience and the kids can have the slapstick and fart jokes. Now Skipper (Tom McGrath), Kowalski (Chris Miller), Rico (Conrad Vernon), and Private (Christopher Knights) have taken center stage, and their spin-off, Penguins of Madagascar, easily surpasses the first two Madagascar films (I didn't even bother with the third) through its rapid-fire wit, cuteness, and offbeat jokes that will amuse kids and adults alike. After seeing crack squad's first mission, we cut to the present and see the Penguins squaring off against Dave (John Malkovich), a mad scientist/octopus who poses as a human by day, but by night harbors...

DreamWorks Animation has released a fantastically funny 4 minute clip of the the opening scene of The Penguins of Madagascar. It offers us a little background on how the adventures of Skipper, Kowalski, Rico, and Private began. It's basically a brief origin story. They actually showed this scene at San Diego Comic-Con earlier in the year, but now you can all enjoy the laughs that it has to offer.

Meet the young Penguins of Madagascar in a special 4-Minute sneak preview of the new 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks Animation spin-off, coming to theaters this November.
This latest look at the animated adventure shows us Skipper (Tom McGrath), Rico (John Di Maggio) and Kowalski (Jeff Bennett) on their first mission as they attempt to save an egg from being eaten by seals. Their impressive skills in retrieving the egg convince them that maybe they should defy mother nature and head off on their own. Of course, their celebration is short lived after the egg reveals itself to contain a whole new world of problems.

So far what we’ve seen from Madagascar spin-off Penguins Of Madagascar has focused on their present, as a well-drilled but shambolic military force that somehow manages to succeed despite half-arsed plans. A new clip from the film explores the birth of the team (and in the case of Private, his literal, gooey birth)…After proving their popularity in the Madagascar trilogy and testing their mettle with a TV series, the flightless feathered friends are now taking on the task of anchoring their own film that finds Skipper (Tom McGrath), Kowalski (Chris Miller), Rico and Private (Christopher Knights) joining forces with a super-secret animal organization called North Wind to fight the many-tentacled Octopus menace known as Dave (John Malkovich). North Wind's leader, meanwhile, is a wolf known only as Classified, voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch. Oh, and there’s a new penguin in the mix, Corporal, bearing Peter Stomare’s distinctive tones.

While DreamWorks Animation has a kind of “throw everything against the wall and see what sticks” attitude when it comes to their films, every once in a while they put together something special. I wasn’t necessarily looking forward to the spinoff feature The Penguins of Madagascar, but ever since that first trailer I’ve found myself wanting to see more comedic adventures from the titular penguins. A new Penguins of Madagascar clip has now landed online, and it once again highlights the humorous interplay amongst the penguins and their love of Cheezy Dibbles as they find themselves squaring off against a vending machine. It’s funny stuff, and I’m genuinely eager to catch the film in theaters next month. Last Thursday I headed down to Fox to check out over 30 minutes of footage from The Penguins of Madagascar and about 15 minutes of footage from Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. Both films are due for release later this year so it was a chance to catch up on what to expect from the more family friendly side of Fox's upcoming slate. The seems quite confident when it comes to The Penguins of Madagascar given the amount of stuff we were shown, and they're not wrong to feel that way. The film opens in 3D on November 26th, and features the voices of Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, Chris Knights, John Malkovich, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ken Jeong, Annett Mahendru, and Peter Stormare. Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb was directed by Shawn Levy and stars Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Dan Stevens, Ben Kingsley, Rebel Wilson, Ricky Gervais, Rami Malek,...

A new teaser clip for the Penguins of Madagascar movie has been released by DreamWorks Animation.
The clip features more of the comical covert birds Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private as they team up to take down Dr Octavius Brine, voiced by John Malkovich.
Tom McGrath, John Dimaggio, Chris Miller, and Christopher Knights voice the feathery foursome, alongside Benedict Cumberbatch as Agent Classified who leads a covert protective force of animals.
The force also includes the seal Short Fuse (Ken Jeong), an explosives expert; snow owl Eva (Annet Mahendru), an intelligence analyst; and hulking Norwegian bear Corporal (Peter Stormare), who constantly wants to embrace his four new bird friends.
Eric Darnell, who has co-directed all three Madagascar movies to date, directs alongside Simon J Smith.
Penguins of Madagascar will open in the Us on November 26 and in the UK on December 5.

Benedict Cumberbatch's role in "Penguins of Madagascar" may be voice only, but the latest trailer for the forthcoming animated spinoff will probably make his fans howl anyway. The "Sherlock" star's perfect English diction is a sound for sore ears in the new spot for the "Madagascar" spinoff, in which Cumberbatch plays Classified, a wolf who serves as the leader of an "inter-species task force" dedicated to saving the lives of helpless animals. In addition to returning voice stars Tom McGrath (Skipper), Chris Miller (Kowalski), John Dimaggio (Rico) and Christopher Knights (Private), the film also features the aural talents of John Malkovich as villainous octopus Dr. Octavius Brine (a.k.a Dave). Will Cumberbatch fanatics show up for the film even though the actor himself never appears on screen? Check out the trailer below, then let us know what you think in the comments. Somewhere, right now, my kids are losing their minds. I'm not particularly fond of the "Madagascar" films, but they're fine, I guess. This is the side of Dreamworks that I'm less fond of, the super-jokey frantic-to-be-funny side. Coming on the heels of the beautiful, heartfelt "How To Train Your Dragon 2," it feels like a far more crass decision. That sort of sums up exactly what's wrong with Dreamworks as a studio. They are capable of greatness, but they seem to aim for the "farts are funny" crowd more often than not. The Penguins were at their funniest when they were supporting players, characters that the filmmakers could use to punctuate a few jokes here and there, but it almost never ends well when you take characters like this and push them center-stage. I would imagine there was a time when ABC strongly considered giving Lenny & Squiggy their own sitcom,...

The breakout stars of 2005’s Madagascar are back – this time in their own spin-off, The Penguins of Madagascar. Penguins Skipper (Tom McGrath), Kowalski (Chris Miller), Rico ("Futurama"'s John Dimaggio), and Private (Christopher Knights) partner up with a secret organization called North Wind, led by a wolf super-spy named Classified, voiced by The Hobbit, Star Trek Into Darkness, and "Sherlock"'s Benedict Cumberbatch. Together, they try to stop an evil octopus – voiced, of course, by John Malkovich – who will stop at nothing in order to make penguins extinct. Not much else has been released about the film’s plot, but we’re excited to see whatever these fan-favourite penguins end up doing!
