The premise of Sherwood Schwartz's 1964 sitcom "Gilligan's Island" is succinctly laid out in its indelible theme song, written by Schwartz and George Wyle. The S.S. Minnow, helmed by Captain G. Jonas Grumby (Alan Hale) and his first officer Gilligan (Bob Denver) took on five passengers for a three-hour boat tour of Hawai'i. The ship hit some bad weather, got lost at sea, and washed up on an uncharted island somewhere in the Pacific. Now the two sailors, along with a millionaire (Jim Backus), his wife (Natalie Schafer), a movie star (Tina Louise), a professor (Russel Johnson), and a lottery-winning tourist (Dawn Wells), have to learn to survive, all to comedic effect.
"Gilligan's Island" has no themes of actual survival, instead rolling with its slapstick elements; the series clearly takes place in a cartoon reality. As such, the characters play as broad archetypes, mugging and screaming in an unrealistic fashion.

I’d imagine every one of us, despite our individual life situations, however privileged or difficult they may be, wouldn’t have too much trouble coming up with a pretty long list of people and circumstances for which to be grateful, during the upcoming week traditionally reserved for the expression of thanks as well as throughout the entirety of the year.
Even in our brave new world, where gratitude and humility and generosity of spirit often seem to be in short supply, at the mercy of greed, abuse of power, disregard for the rule of law, and megalomaniac self-interest cynically masquerading as an aggressive strain of nationalist, populist passion, there are good, everyday reasons to look around and take stock of blessings in one’s immediate surroundings.
And speaking specifically as one who has the privilege and opportunity to occasionally write about matters concerning the movies, and even a (very...

It’s time to say goodbye, sort of, to the company whose pioneering DVR introduced consumers to time shifting and ad skipping. Some 17 years after it went public, TiVo just became a part of Rovi with the closing of a $1.1 billion cash and stock acquisition deal they made in May — but with the buyer now adopting the TiVo name. "The new TiVo is uniquely positioned to provide ground-breaking offerings that address the rapidly changing media landscape,” CEO Tom Carson says…...

When Olivia Wilde got wind of GQ’s review of Third Person in which it’s suggested she's too pretty to play a writer, she had the perfects sarcastic reply.
Olivia Wilde Responds To GQ Review
In GQ writer Tom Carson’s review of Third Person, he writes, “She's supposed to be a writer … but your belief in that won't outlast Wilde scampering naked through hotel corridors. With that tush, who'd need to be literate? Who'd want to?”
The ill-conceived joke was picked up on by Jezebal, which tweeted a link to their thought-piece titled “Olivia’s Wilde’s Ass Is Too Nice for Her to Play a Writer.” When Wilde saw the article, she replied, “Kiss my smart a--, GQ.”
Ha. Kiss my smart ass, GQ. “@Jezebel: Olivia Wilde's ass too nice for her to play a writer, says GQ review http://t.co/WJx8BbjWgJ”

With "Noah" nearing its anticipated premiere, GQ magazine gives readers an inside look at the biblical-themed film in its April 2014 issue.
While exploring Darren Aronofsky's blockbuster, the publication's editor Tom Carson shared his thoughts about "Noah" and even revealed how the film may change the way people feel about the Bible tale.
Highlights from Mr. Carson's interview are as follows. For more, be sure to visit GQ!
On Bible story flaws:
"They aren't weird or disturbing enough. We're talking supernatural happenings, freak cataclysms, and a capricious Deity who has as much control over his kookier impulses as Justin Bieber. To evoke the proper awe about our founding myths, the Old Testament's folk tales ought to be treated as terrifying and bizarre. What's truly batty is how the Sunday-school version of wrathful Old Testament stories try to lull us into thinking they make perfect sense."

This time of year can be frustrating for film fans. Critics and film journalists able to see films early write argument pieces for movies general film fans haven.t seen yet, from This is 40 and Django Unchained to The Hobbit (which, at least, opens Friday) and Zero Dark Thirty. A particular think piece posted to The American Prospect, for example, discusses director Kathryn Bigelow.s approach to warterboarding and torture-driven investigative techniques as the military tracked Osama Bin Laden. But it.s such a detailed read that audience members are going to want to bookmark it and revisit it after you.ve had a chance to absorb Zdt and reach your own conclusions. Film critic Tom Carson addressed the concerns . leveled, mostly, by people who haven.t yet seen the movie . that Bigelow.s drama was pro-torture. The movie does not shy away from the use of torture by...

The stock dropped about 40% this morning following the digital entertainment company’s warning last night that revenues would come in far lower, and losses would be much higher, than investors envisioned for this year. The company is “misfiring on all cylinders,” Cowen and Co analyst Robert Stone says this morning as he downgraded Rovi to “neutral” and cut his revenue estimate for 2012 by 13.3% to $670M. Rovi makes most of its money by selling interactive TV software — including program guides and copy protection mechanisms — to consumer electronics and pay TV companies. But it said last night that it’s been hurt by delays in adding or renewing patent licenses, including for TV Everywhere initiatives. Rovi declined to sign deals because “some expected licensees would not agree to acceptable terms,” CEO Tom Carson said. He added that when deals are made — possibly next year — “we expect these deals will include catch-up payments.

Scott Weinberg has tallied the votes from 20 Movies.com contributors and come up with a top 20. #1: Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive.
"Refn's pulp fantasia — with the iconic Ryan Gosling sporting a cheesy scorpion jacket, a toothpick and a lack of dialogue unrivaled since Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns — reminded me just how much I love movies," writes Sean Burns. "Refn's boldly artificial flourishes, graphic violence and swoony romanticism conjured an alternate universe I adored basking in, over and over. Throw in Albert Brooks as the villain, and I don't want to admit how many times I went back to see it again."
Also in the Philadelphia Weekly, Matt Prigge, whose #2 is Kenneth Lonergan's Margaret, on his #1, House of Tolerance: "Like Margaret, Bertrand Bonello's dreamy look at a tony, turn-of-the-century Parisian brothel was initially hated, with some at Cannes calling it the fest's worst. It fared better at Toronto,...

Paramount Home Video has announced writer/director Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air will be hitting DVD and Blu-ray on March 9. What’s great about the release is even though most studios love to frak us with the first release of a film on home video, the Blu-ray is loaded with deleted scenes and extras. The only negative is the DVD only has part of the extras, while the Blu-ray has everything.
If you never saw Up in the Air, the film received six Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor (George Clooney), Best Supporting Actress (Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick), Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. The film has already won a Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay. It’s one of my favorite films of the year and I can’t recommend it enough. Hit the jump for a full listing of the extras:
