10 Times I Was Shocked By How Good A Movie Was Even Though I Had Low Expectations
Image
As an ardent moviegoer, I love watching a movie with absolutely no prior knowledge about it. Sometimes, I'll even skip watching the trailer, so I can go into it completely blind. Experiencing a movie with no preconceived notions makes most films a surprise. However, sometimes you inevitably find out more about a movie beforehand, be it through trailers you watch in a movie theater or by word of mouth. Often they're negative things, but movies that exceed viewers' expectations aren't all that rare.

For example, after the disappointing Black Widow, and with the Infinity Saga over, I had no hopes for a good MCU film again, but I loved Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, one of the best movies of Marvel's Phase 4. Even when expectations aren't stunningly low, people can still be surprised, which is how Yuri! On Ice became one of the anime of the past decade that surpassed expectations,...

Jason Bateman Almost Directed One Of The Best Comedies Of The Century So Far
Image
"Game Night" is one of the best comedies of the last decade, a fantastic film following a group of friends who gather for a game night before the fun turns into a nightmare after one of them is kidnapped for real. Part mystery, part David Fincher's "The Game" (but played for laughs), and otherwise all-round mayhem, the movie features Rachel McAdams at her absolute best, one of the all-time greatest side characters in Jesse Plemons' Gary, and one of Jason Bateman's strongest performances.

However, Bateman almost had a very different role in the film, which he also produced. You see, the film went into development back in 2013 when New Line bought an original script by Mark Perez (which was likewise about a game night that goes wrong), and for much of that time Bateman was slated to direct the film. As the actor once told CinemaBlend, "I had...

Why Game Night 2 Seems Like 'a No-Brainer' to Star Lamorne Morris
Image
Despite ending on a cliffhanger, a sequel to Game Night has still not materialized. However, Lamorne Morris, who starred in the beloved 2018 comedy film, is still holding out hope that a follow-up will one day be produced.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Morris expressed nothing but excitement when asked about a possible Game Night 2. "I would love one, are you kidding me? It set itself up for a sequel, and I just had so much fun working on that project. We shot in Atlanta, which is one of my favorite cities to be in. And the cast is great. Everyone was super kind, super nice," he said. "I had a lot of nerves going into it, working with Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams and Jeffrey Wright. All these folks on this movie, Michael C. Hall, I thought, 'Oh my god, these are iconic, iconic actors.' Kyle Chandler. 'These...

Jason Bateman's Acclaimed Comedy Sequel Gets Disappointing Update 6 Years Later
Image
Game Night 2 seems unlikely as one of the original actors received a "straight-up 'no'" from a director when asked about the sequel. Despite the potential for a sequel, the directors have hesitated to move forward, fearing they couldn't surpass the success of the first film. Game Night was a critically acclaimed and commercially successful comedy, with a strong fanbase who would love to see a sequel.

Game Night 2 gets a less-than-hopeful update from one of the film's original actors. Game Night is a 2018 dark comedy about a group of friends who find their jovial game night routine disrupted when they must solve a real-life mystery after one of their brother’s is seemingly kidnapped. The film features a leading cast including Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams, Kyle Chandler, Sharon Horgan, Billy Magnussen, and Lamorne Morris.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Morris provides an update on the status of a Game Night sequel.

Image
Rachel McAdams is “totally down” to for a second go at Game Night, with the actress eager to reunite with directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein for a sequel to the 2018 hit action comedy. And you can’t let down your mother.

“You know, right after my mom saw that movie, she was like, ‘You have to do a sequel!’. I would totally be down for that. I love [Daley and Goldstein] and I love a game night so it’s the perfect package for me. Also, I don’t wanna disappoint my mom!”

Game Night 2 Gets Disappointing Update From Directors
Image
Despite being left on a somewhat open note, a potential Game Night 2 gets a disappointing update from directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. The 2018 dark mystery comedy revolved around a group of friends who meet for regular game nights, only for it to be hijacked when the successful brother of one is kidnapped, leading to a real and dangerous game of cat-and-mouse. Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams led the ensemble cast of Game Night, which garnered largely favorable reviews and was a box office smash, grossing over $117 million against its $37 million budget.

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss their latest directorial effort, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley were asked about the possibility of a Game Night 2. The directing duo admitted that such a sequel is unlikely, expressing that while it may have been left with more story to tell, they...

Superhero Comedy Superworld Reunites Director Jason Bateman with Game Night Writer
Image
Ozark and Arrested Development star Jason Bateman will be moving behind the camera for an upcoming adaptation of Gus Krieger's recently released novel, Superworld. The novel, and thereby the movie, is set in a world where everyone has superpowers, except for one man. Superworld has been described as having tones similar to the beloved Pixar classic, The Incredibles, and sounds like it could be a welcome addition to the superhero genre.

The story, which hit this summer as an Audible audiobook, is set in 2038 in a world where every person on the planet has superpowers, except for one man named Ignatius Lohman. Lohman is stuck in a white-collar, dead-end job while his father is one of the most powerful super-people on the planet and leader of defense organization, Peerless. But Lohman will get his chance to step up when he is forced to face a corporate overlord whose power...

Veteran reality director Hisham Abed finally gets his Emmy due with ‘Queer Eye’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Hisham Abed
“The look of the show is always aimed to be authentic, so if anything feels off or produced, it just doesn’t have a place,” Hisham Abed tells Gold Derby in his exclusive interview (watch the video above) about directing the “Queer Eye” reboot. He notes that what surprised him about the show was “how quickly a simple conversation can get so deep and so real and so heartfelt and that any one of the Fab Five is capable of doing that” and “how beautifully emotional the stories that we tell can be.” Abed explains about how shooting handheld fosters this environment, “The handheld energy is something that underscores that authenticity and it helps us move quickly and silently and we’re less encumbered by things like a tripod or a dolly that you might have on a scripted show or even some competition shows.”

Jason Bateman Will Direct John Cena in a New Movie Studio-Set Netflix Action Comedy
Jason Bateman (Ozark) is set to direct a new action-comedy for Netflix that will star John Cena. The movie doesn’t have a title yet, but it’s set at an old abandoned film studio and Bateman will also have a role in the movie.

The movie is being written by Game Night scribe Mark Perez and according to to THR, it definitely has a Game Night kind of vibe.

The story follows a family that gets stuck in an old abandoned movie studio and while they are there, the “sets come to life and the family members find themselves stuck in various movies.”

That actually sounds like it could be a lot of fun! It’s got that Night of the Museum concept, but the focus is on movies, which could be a blast for the creative team to play with.

I’ll be looking forward to watching this.

She finally came across John Henry, a Dominican-American wunderkind who sold his first business venture by the age of 25. Through his Harlem Capital firm, Henry’s mission is to coach promising business ventures to prosperity.

Each episode of “Hustle” features Henry working with an entrepreneur to study the problems in startup business ventures in a range of fields — food, apparel, beauty et al — and help guide them to success. General Motors’ Cadillac is a co-producer of the series in an effort to showcase its new Cadillac XT4 model.

Greenwald knew Samuelsson, the star...

Game Night
Game Night is as high concept a comedy as they come—a group of very competitive friends who do a weekly game night together find themselves entangled in a kidnapping-smuggling-murder situation which they initially believe is part of an elaborate role-playing extension of their usual easygoing, harmless suburban fun—and as I punched it up on HBO Go my expectations were well in check. I didn’t remember that anyone got all that excited about this movie when it was released this past spring— its very existence came into and went from my memory with barely a ripple– but the lineup of good reviews on Metacritic that I discovered only after finishing it proved my memory insufficient. Nor do I recall the last time a contemporary comedy made me laugh because of the way it was specifically edited and directed, but Game Night did, consistently—the directors are John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein,...

With that in mind, we’ve put our heads together to shout-out a number of films, performances, and achievements since January that deserve consideration at year’s end, lest they be forgotten by the upcoming onslaught.

Check out Tim Gray’s accompanying story summarizing the awards player so far and looking ahead at what’s to come this Oscar season.

(Note: This list only takes into account films that have been or will be released theatrically in the U.S. between Jan. 1 and June 30. Anything that has debuted at a film festival but not seen its commercial release yet is not eligible.)

Game Night Movie Review | Let’s Play
Well, I have to tell you that unless you are some kind of a die-hard snob, you will probably find Game Night (2018) far more entertaining than the average board game. Moreover, it is the perfect alternative if you want to persuade your friends to do something different on Saturday night. And if you happen to be a game buff, then this smart crime-thriller-comedy-mystery mash-up is right for you.

In a recent Q&A session on Reddit, the directors of Game Night (who by the way are huge fans of the board games) admitted that they make movies based on their own taste. In other words, they create films that they would love to watch themselves. They like to make the most fun out of this whole filmmaking thing. This is just one of the reasons Game Night turned out to be a huge success in the box-office.

John Francis Daley...

‘Game Night’ Review
Stars: Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams, Billy Magnussen, Kyle Chandler, Sharon Horgan, Lamorne Morris, Kylie Bunbury, Jesse Plemons | Written by Mark Perez | Directed by John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein

Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are responsible for the recent [National Lampoon’s] Vacation reboot, while writer Mark Perez is best known for… I dunno, Herbie Fully Loaded? This roster of dubious talent should tell you what to expect from this inane crime comedy – i.e. not very much. Don’t be fooled by the headline cast.

Max (Jason Bateman) and Annie (Rachel McAdams), one-time pub quiz meet-cuters, are struggling to conceive. The doctor reckons it’s stress-related. The stress is caused by the imminent arrival of Max’s charming, extroverted brother, Brooks (Kyle Chandler, ironically more charmless than ever). He’s coming to town for the titular Game Night, a regular competition hosted by Max and Annie.

They will be joined by...

Game Night review
Ready for the comedy surprise of the year so far? Get yourself a ticket to the really impressive Game Night...

A couple of days on from seeing Game Night, it's still making me laugh. It's been a long time since we've seen something this consistently funny come out of a Hollywood studio, but for once, it's terrific to see a comedy that doesn't pile all of its jokes in the trailer and doesn't get bogged down in meanness. For those of us who still shudder at the memory of Office Christmas Party, Jason Bateman most definitely redeems himself here.

The film opens with his character Max meeting Annie (Rachel McAdams) at a pub quiz, where they match wits over Tinky Winky from Teletubbies. It's love at first sight, and their matching competitive streak makes them formidable hosts of a regular game night for their friends. Regrettably, Max's sibling rivalry with...

Game Night Review
Author: Stefan Pape

Ah, the action comedy. A sub-genre that so rarely triumphs, often falling for the same contrived tropes, reliant on big set-pieces, car chases and shoot-outs, forgetting that comedy is so often at its best when subtle, deriving from the characters and dialogue. While John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein’s Game Night follows the aforementioned formula, this succeeds where so many other films of this nature suffer: it’s funny.

Max (Jason Bateman) and Annie (Rachel McAdams) fall in love during a pub quiz, bonding our a shared passion for competition, which they both take incredibly seriously. Coming first, most of the time, Max has always settled for second best when it comes to his rich, handsome brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler). Needless to say, Max grows anxious when his brother comes to town, and he’s particularly bemused when his weekly hosting of ‘game night’ changes venue to Brooks’ lavish abode.

'Game Night' Screenwriter Is Dreaming of Sequel Possibilities
Mark Perez
Could Game Night role the dice once more? Screenwriter Mark Perez would be game, if given the opportunity.

"It would be great to have sequels. Super titles like Game Night or specific titles like that feel genetically built to have sequels," he says. "That would mean the movie did well and that's all I really care about at this stage."

Game Night stars Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams as a couple whose regular Saturday evening gathering of friends turns into a real-life murder mystery. Perez uses a sports analogy for how he's taking in opening weekend, which has seen the film...

Film Review: Jason Bateman & Rachel McAdams Score on ‘Game Night’
Chicago – A game cast elevates what is otherwise a bit of a ho hum affair in the action comedy “Game Night.” Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams are a middle class couple hosting weekly game nights with a group of good friends. But when Bateman’s competitive venture capitalist older brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler) comes to town, he promises to take game night up a notch.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

This leads to a somewhat convoluted plot which attempts to confuse both the characters and audiences about what is real and what is not, and who’s in on it. And luckily by this time, Jason Bateman can play a part like this in his sleep. He’s his usual uptight “Michael Bluth” type, but Bateman continues to find a way to mine laughs out of his usual persona. It’s hard to imagine anyone else getting as much humor out of an “Ed...

Movie Review: Game Night
It wasn’t so long ago that hard R-rated comedies were coming out every week. The Hangover (2009) seemed to come out of nowhere and rejuvenate the genre to blockbuster heights. In the years following we got the likes of Bad Teacher (2011), Hot Tub Time Machine (2010), This is the End (2013), two more incredibly unfunny Hangover sequels (2011/2013), and Horrible Bosses (2011). There were many more of course, but it’s that last one that draws a tie to the latest hard R-rated comedy attempting to hit the zeitgeist. Horrible Bosses came out in the summer of 2011 when we were bombarded with blockbusters like Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, X-Men: First Class, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The comedy was a huge success for the studio as it entertained audiences without over-sensitizing them.

Flash forward almost seven years later and you’ll notice Warner Bros....

‘Game Night’ Scores $1 Million at Thursday Box Office
New Line Cinema’s “Game Night” scored $1 million in Thursday previews last night, while Paramount’s “Annihilation” earned $900,000. Marvel’s “Black Panther” grossed $14.3 million on Thursday, giving it the best Thursday ever for a McU title. “Game Night” is led by Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams, and Kyle Chandler, and follows a group of friends who get together for their weekly game night only to end up caught in an actual murder plot. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein directed from a script by Mark Perez. Bateman’s film “Horrible Bosses 2” also earned $1 million in previews before it grossed $15.4 million its opening...

Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams Prove They're a Great Comedy Couple in 'Game Night'
Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams, and Olivia in Game Night (2018)
Farce is a beast to get right in movies. The fact that Game Night hits the mark more often than it hits a wall is cause for cheering. Hell, if you have Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams to play the game-loving marrieds heading a cast of merry pranksters, you're already ahead of the game. I wasn't thrilled that the rowdy Mark Perez script fell into the hands of directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein since they perpetrated the 2015 remake of Vacation on an unsuspecting public. But high spirits carry...

Game Night Review: A Tricky, Twisted Comedy Thriller That Wins
Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams, and Olivia in Game Night (2018)
One of the many perks of living in Los Angeles, aside from the weather, are the opportunities movie lovers are afforded, like a Tuesday night early screening of Game Night, plus a Q&A with star Jason Bateman and directors John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein. During the Q&A, one fan brought up how this movie, thankfully, gave hardly anything away with the trailers that debuted before the movie's release, which was completely true, especially since the trailers focus on the straight-up comedy aspects of Game Night, as one would expect from a movie starring Jason Bateman, and revealed practically nothing about the surprisingly effective thriller aspects of the movie... and how dark it can get at times.

I remember being surprisingly impressed when the trailers for Game Night first came out, but it still didn't strike me as being anything too groundbreaking. It looked like a funny comedy with some solid action elements,...

‘Game Night’ Review: Jesse Plemons is Hilarious in Self-Aware Comedy of Errors
Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams, and Olivia in Game Night (2018)
February is usually dumping ground for studio fare, and while “Game Night” won’t change that, it’s at least more satisfying than the low bar would suggest. With a packed lineup of players and a board that covers far more area than you’d expect from a wide-release early spring lark, the latest studio effort from directing duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein is a dark romp for all the players involved.

A pair of trivia and competition soulmates Max and Annie (Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams) gather their usual roster of friends together for their regular games group. Ryan (Billy Magnussen) goes through dates like changes of clothes, Kevin and Michelle (Lamorne Morris and Kylie Bunbury) have such a worry-free marriage that one offhand comment can puncture their contended bubble, and their nosey police officer neighbor Gary (Jesse Plemons) keeps trying (and failing) to join in on the fun.

How Game Night screenwriter Mark Perez sold Jason Bateman
Game Night will be a fun night out for grown-up couples. It’s an all star comedy broken up into couples: Jason Batemen and Rachel McAdams, Kylie Bunbury and Lamorne Morris and Billy Magnussen with Sharon Horgan. It’s comedy gold when the couples go over to Brooks (Kyle Chandler)’s house for a murder mystery evening, not realizing that real criminals have hijacked their plans. It’s a dark action comedy that goes to real violent places. Mark Perez wrote the screenplay for Game Night. Monsters and Critics spoke with Perez about making sure the mystery works, ensuring the cast had great chemistry...read more...

New ‘Game Night’ Trailer Showcases a Crazy, Wild, and Scary Adventure
Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for their upcoming action/comedy ‘Game Night’, and it surely delivers–at least from a comedic perspective. We’ve seen a good look at the film in it’s previous trailer, but this trailer not only ratchets ups the comedy, but also the tension as we see stars Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams get caught up into shenanigans, forcing them into the expected comedic situations.

What makes this trailer so noteworthy is that it is the latest film from newly tapped ‘Flashpoint‘ directors John Francis Daleyand Jonathan Goldstein. Although the duo’s comedy instinct was showcased in the less-than stellar ‘Vacation’ reboot, their knack for comedy with a heart manifested itself wonderfully in their screenplay for ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming‘. This film, however was scripted by Mark Perez (Accepted) and in addition to McAdams and Bateman, the film stars Kyle Chandler, Lamorne Morris, Jesse Plemons,...
