Josh Klinghoffer, the former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist who went on to play for Pearl Jam and others, pleaded “not guilty” to a misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence in a California courtroom Thursday.

Klinghoffer did not attend the hearing in person but entered the plea through his lawyer, Blair Berk. The criminal charge, filed quietly in August, stems from a deadly crash on March 18, 2024, in the city of Alhambra, just east of Los Angeles. Klinghoffer, 44, was driving a black 2022 Gmc Yukon when his vehicle struck pedestrian Israel Sanchez in a crosswalk.

Josh Klinghoffer, former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist and current touring member of Pearl Jam, has been sued for wrongful death and negligence after he ran over a pedestrian in his SUV in Los Angeles back in March.

The suit was first reported by TMZ, who confirmed via Klinghoffer’s attorney that the guitarist was indeed behind the wheel when the accident took place on March 18th, 2024. A video obtained by TMZ shows Klinghoffer’s black Gmc Yukon was turning left at a crosswalk in Alhambra, California when it struck the victim, identified as 47-year-old Israel Sanchez.

The video shows the car running over and dragging Sanchez, after which Klinghoffer exits his vehicle, walks over to the body, and gets back in his car. Sanchez received blunt force trauma to his head and succumbed to his injuries about two hours later.

Velvet Joy Productions is crowdfunding a new, feature-length documentary about Scottish guitarist John McGeoch. He worked closely with Howard Devoto, Siouxsie Sioux and John Lydon and inspired a whole new generation of artists, such as Johnny Marr, Jonny Greenwood, James Dean Bradfield and John Frusciante.

The documentary, which is titled John McGeoch: The Light Pours Out Of Me, is described as “a film about loss, contextualised by a daughter who lost her father and also framed within a narrative about a super talented maverick musician whose work is not – but should be – widely known.”

Two decades of solo material from Omar Rodríguez-López is coming to vinyl in an incomprehensibly massive box set called Amor de Frances, out December 4th.

Back in 2021, Rodríguez-López — best known as one of the masterminds between At the Drive-In and The Mars Volta — shared a ton of his back catalog on streaming for the first time, including fan-favorite Cryptomnesia and a collaboration with John Frusciante. Those albums are just a few of the 57 total LPs that comprise Amor de Frances, which will also include two previously-unreleased records, as well as 31 albums never before pressed to vinyl.

Along with a set of nine art prints, Amor de Frances comes packaged in four individual boxes with an eye-catching spine design that’ll look really, really nice on your vinyl shelf. It’s limited to 500 copies, and pre-orders begin on October 30th here. The albums will also be available to purchase individually early next year.

Kelly Clarkson won big Thursday morning with her cover of “Can’t Stop” by Red Hot Chili Peppers, as part of her regular “Kellyoke” segment on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

“Can’t Stop,” which appeared on 2002’s By the Way, marks the second second Chili Peppers ode Clarkson’s done on her talk show (she did an emotional rendition of “Under the Bridge” last year). While the original recording is an energetic bop with quirky (and often non-sensical) lyrics, Clarkson’s rendition trades Anthony Kiedis’ grooving, pseudo-rap vocal approach for a more melodic and soulful one, hitting all the strong notes she’s known for.

The studio band here doesn’t quite compare to Flea, John Frusciante, and Chad Smith, but they sure look like they’re having fun; Clarkson even donned a distressed flannel shirt to testify her rock roots. Watch the performance below.

The Darkness singer Justin Hawkins is often outspoken on his podcast, “Justin Hawkins Rides Again,” and now he’s taken aim at Red Hot Chili Peppers’ John Frusciante, calling his guitar playing “shit” and comparing it to child-like paintings.

Hawkins’ remarks came from a recent episode of his podcast entitled “How Not to Write a Song,” in which he and guest Pat Finnerty (of the YouTube series What Makes This Song Stink) proceeded to lay into Frusciante as part of a lengthy two-hour conversation.

“My issue with Red Hot Chili Peppers is that I get nothing from John Frusciante’s guitar playing,” Hawkins said, addressing the negative comments he receives from Rhcp fans whenever he discusses the band on his podcast. “I feel like if we can call Mark Knopfler [of Dire Straits] an underrated player, I would describe John Frusciante as an overrated player. In fact, I have done that, more than once.

With three years behind him since he was let go from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Josh Klinghoffer has some thoughts on the music the band has made in his wake. Speaking with the Brazilian podcast 5 Notas recently (via Exclaim), the guitarist argued that Chili Peppers were “doing cooler music” when he was still a member of the band.

Klinghoffer performed on two Red Hot Chili Peppers albums following John Frusciante’s 2009 departure: 2011’s I’m With You and 2016’s The Getaway. Frusciante rejoined in late 2019 to perform on the band’s next two albums, Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen, both of which were released in 2022. “I don’t think I finished [listening to] the second one,” Klinghoffer said. “I was trying to cram it in once before leaving on a plane, and I got as far as maybe the ninth song, and I don’t think I listened to the rest.

Flea has led tributes to Tom Verlaine, the frontman for rock band Television, after his death was announced on Saturday (29 January).

Verlaine was the guitarist, songwriter and lead figure of the New York City band, which was mainly active in the mid-Seventies.

The band is most known for the 1977 album Marquee Moon, which is highly regarded as one of the foremost punk releases.

Verlaine frequently collaborated with musician Patti Smith throughout his solo career, and they once dated while they were part of the emerging punk scene in New York.

His death was announced by Jesse Paris Smith, the daughter of Patti Smith, who said that he died “after a brief illness”.

Since the news broke, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist Flea is one of several musicians to have paid tribute to Verlaine online, sharing that he’d been an influence on his and bandmate John Frusciante.

Former Red Hot Chillies guitarist Josh Klinghoffer has opened up about his 10 years performing with the rock band, claiming that the experience was “enormously stifling”.

Klinghoffer first joined the group in 2009 following guitarist John Frusciante’s exit. However, he was later asked to leave in 2019 once Frusciante returned.

Speaking about his “perfect” decade-long run with the “Californication” band, Klinghoffer told Guitar World (via Radio X) that “as much as I love those guys and loved playing with them, it was also enormously stifling creatively”.

He went on to explain: “They’re an established band with an established sound, and I learned over time how little deviating from that was possible.

“As much as I thought they were up for experimentation, they generally stayed in their own lane.”

Red Hot Chili Peppers have released an anthemic new single, “Eddie.” The soulful, meditative rock number reflects on late guitarist Eddie Van Halen and nods to David Lee Roth, who departed Van Halen in 1985.

Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel have long had to face the challenge of similar names, hosting similar shows.

Now the late-night hosts have teamed up for an epic April Fool’s prank that will see Kimmel hosting The Tonight Show and Fallon hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Kimmel will be in New York hosting the NBC show and Fallon will be in Hollywood hosting the ABC show – a surprise to both the in-studio audiences and viewers watching at home.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are selling their publishing rights to Merck Mercuriadis’s Hipgnosis Songs Fund for around $140 million, a source close to the situation tells Rolling Stone. The transaction marks the latest catalog sale from a major legacy artist and one of the highest profile acquisitions to date for Mercuriadis.

The deal was first reported by Billboard on Monday evening and confirmed by Rolling Stone.
