Gangster films have become an identifiable piece of American and international pop culture. The study of the human condition through criminality continues to fascinate audiences worldwide as the need to understand why people turn to lives of crime somehow helps people better understand themselves. With tons of big-name hits in the genre, such as The Godfather, Goodfellas and Scarface, it's easy to see why fans love the genre.
However, there are plenty of incredible films in the genre that, for one reason or another, aren't quite talked about as much as the iconic staples of gangster cinema. Films like Lawless and The Drop are underrated gems that deserve their day in the sun. Needless to say, more prominent names in the genre constantly overshadow multiple brilliant gangster flicks.
Updated on March 17, 2025, by Robert Vaux: The gangster genre is durable, and there is no shortage of brilliant gangster movies that never quite received their due.

Martin Scorsese is an absolute master at creating iconic crime thrillers. He knows how to captivate an audience and put his own stamp on a film. Despite his skill, he didn't want to make a gangster movie, which actually turned out to be one of his best, and nor did one of the biggest actors in it. Scorsese has evidently been choosy with his work. He doesn't settle for stories that aren't going to continue his glowing resume, nor does he work with people that aren't up to standard.
The director has been nominated for Academy Awards 16 times, winning once for Best Director with The Departed. His most recent works, including Killers of the Flower Moon and The Irishman, have demonstrated that he is able to...

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes’true love first blossomed poetically on screen. Gosling often defines his performances through understatement, from a vintage heartthrob in The Notebook to a brooding protector in what this author thinks is the best film ever, Drive, while still featuring in blockbusters like the pink phenomenon, Barbie. Mendes, now happily embracing the beauty of motherhood and entrepreneurship, also dedicated herself to acting, delving into roles like the complicated mistress of Denzel Washington's character in Training Day to a cynical gossip columnist in Hitch, showing she also had the range to tackle both dramatic and comedic contexts.
However, there’s a strong case that their finest work came when they shared the screen in the same movie: Derek Cianfrance's 2012 morality tale The Place Beyond the Pines. The ambitious, multi-generational film brought the couple together off-screen while testing the actors with roles that demanded intensity. Possibly thanks to the surprise endorsement from Oscar-winning director Quentin Tarantino, Jerry Seinfeld’s creepy CGI children’s movie Bee Movie endures. It’s currently one of the top movies on Netflix, which sure doesn’t say much for the selection over at Netflix.
Bee Movie, of course, tells the story of a worker bee named Barry B. Benson (perhaps named after the sitcom that Seinfeld was fired from in the ‘80s) who forges a sexually-confounding relationship with a human woman, in a storyline so gross that Seinfeld would later feel the need to apologize for it.
The film ends with Barry taking actor Ray Liotta to court for stealing and selling their honey. If things couldn’t get any weirder, Seinfeld promoted the movie by ziplining around France in a bee costume.
But do you know who isn’t crazy about Bee Movie? People who actually know a thing or two about bees.

Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas depicts the crime lifestyle perfectly, despite an expert calling out one casting choice that upset his father. The legendary director has explored the mob milieu many times over his illustrious career, starring in 1973 with his third movie, Mean Streets, which was also Scorsese's first of several collaborations with Robert De Niro. Though Mean Streets is considered by many to be one of the greatest gangster movies ever made, Scorsese's Mafia magnum opus might be Goodfellas, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest movies ever made.
Over the years, Scorsese has explored many aspects of the Mafia and gangster lifestyle in Raging Bull, Casino, and Gangs of New York. However, it was his exploration of the Irish Mob in Boston, The Departed, that won Best Picture and earned Scorsese his only Academy Award for Best Director. More recently, Scorsese made The Irishman, what many...

While Jason Statham may owe his acting career to Guy Ritchie for giving him his start, critics felt differently after panning their third cinematic collaboration, Revolver. Torpedoed by ungodly expectations caused by Snatch and Lock,Stock and Two Smoking Barrels before it, Revolver is a much better movie than credited for, requiring repeat viewings to see through the style-over-substance charge the movie has been leveled with.
As Revolver celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2025, giving the film another spin is recommended for Statham and Ritchie fans. With a screenplay co-written by venerated French filmmaker Luc Besson, Revolver was unfairly dismissed during its initial release and deserves another shot. It may not be the best work by the talent involved, but there's no way Revolver should hold a lowly 13% Rotten Tomatoes score.

If you have never heard about the Luxembourg City Film Festival before, it may surprise you to know that the biggest annual film event in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, which is surrounded by France, Germany and Belgium, is turning 15 this year.
Long considered a hidden gem on the global fest circuit, the event has steadily gained in stature, routinely attracting big industry names to a country with a population of only around 670,000. Just take last year as an example, when the fest set an attendance record with a 10 percent increase to 19,962. For its 2024, LuxFilmFest, it attracted the likes of Viggo Mortensen, Chinese director Wang Bing, Mauritanian director Abderrahmane Sissako, French director Gaspar Noé — who hosted a retrospective and a masterclass — and a jury that included Luxembourg star Vicky Krieps, German actor Sebastian Koch, and U.S. director Ira Sachs.

It’s hard to not be drawn by the inherent absurdity of Cocaine Bear, a film that, much like its titular character, charges headfirst into chaos with reckless abandon. Directed by Elizabeth Banks, this action-horror-comedy hybrid takes a kernel of truth – the story of a bear who ingested a large quantity of cocaine in 1985 – and spins it into a high-energy bloodbath, replete with severed limbs, mauling, and a bear behaving in ways that defy both nature and, in some cases, CGI physics. But for all its lurid appeal and promise of midnight-movie mayhem, Cocaine Bear struggles to sustain its manic energy across an entire feature-length runtime, leaving it more of a party trick than a cult classic.
A drug smuggler drops a shipment of cocaine over a national park, and a black bear finds itself consuming vast amounts of it. What follows is a string of intertwining storylines populated by a game cast,...

James Marsden wants to play Frank Sinatra in a biopic.

Michael Gandolfini has spoken about whether he’d be open to returning as a young Tony Soprano in a potential prequel series. The son of the late James Gandolfini, who portrayed the iconic mob boss in The Sopranos, addressed the speculation in a recent interview.
When asked if he’d consider stepping back into the role, Michael made it clear that the decision isn’t up to him. “Look, it’s David’s universe,” he said, referring to the show’s creator, David Chase. “It’s up to David, ultimately. I know that David’s working on some other things, not Sopranos-related, which would be exciting.”
While he’d love to collaborate with Chase again, Michael doesn’t see Tony making a return. “I think Tony’s probably set to rest now for good, but who knows, who knows — but my guess would be, that character [has] now closed the book on that,...

March 17, 1951 was a great day in history, because that’s the day Kurt Vogel Russell entered the world. And while he would go on to become one of the biggest icons of the eighties and nineties, many folks don’t know that Russell started as a child star for The Walt Disney Company, even acting opposite his future life partner Goldie Hawn in The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band (1968) – although they wouldn’t get together until Russell ended up in another movie starring Goldie Hawn, Swing Shift (1984). From the sixties into the seventies, he starred in Disney flicks like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), but as the studio’s movies started to flop and Russell got older, a change of pace was needed. Arguably, Russell’s career took off when he began working with director John Carpenter, with the first movie being 1979’s TV movie Elvis, but what...

James Gandolfini can easily be one of the most celebrated actors out there, with a slew of noteworthy projects to his name. But out of the lot, his portrayal of the mob boss Tony Soprano definitely stands the tallest. While it brought him immense fame and made him one of television’s greatest actors, behind the scenes, his lifestyle became a major concern for HBO executives.
The network came to the rescue of the show when all the major networks stepped back from running it on their platform.

Recasting a character is always a tricky proposition. Sometimes, it's just not working out, and you go in a different direction, but when you're dealing with a franchise character, you risk angering longtime fans who have emotionally invested in a particular actor's performance. That was the case when "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" replaced Aunt Viv, recasting Janet Hubert with Daphne Reid, and people still talk about that situation decades later.
There are also instances when an actor dies while filming something meant to be ongoing. In early 2025, it was reported that, despite fan investment in Chadwick Boseman's performance, Marvel is considering recasting T'Challa ahead of "Black Panther 3." In fact, writer Jeff Sneider reported that the role had already been offered to someone new, but they decided not to take the risk. It’s weird to find an animal outside of its natural habitat. A penguin floating around the International Space Station instead of waddling through the Antarctic. A kangaroo in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles instead of hopping across the Outback. A skunk in the White House instead of… actually, no, that one fits. Anyway, it’s also weird to find a mediocre straight-to-dvd action movie inside of a major movie theater, instead of in the bargain bin at a Big Lots in 2010.

After a delay, Family Guy is finally returning, with Season 23 premiering on Sunday Feb. 16, 2025. It will debut at 8 pm Et / Pt, which has long been The Simpsons' time slot, per TheWrap. Rounding out the two-hour block will be Grimsburg Season 2, The Great North Season 5, and Krapopolis Season 2.
The new episode will be a riff on Top Gun, with Peter playing Maverick as he mourns the death of Goose (Joe). His relationship with Charlie (Lois) is explored along with his son, Rooster (Chris). Given Family Guy's winning record with spoofs on beloved movies, expect this one to be a classic.
The show recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, despite being canceled twice since its series premiere on Jan. 31, 1999.

Director Uwe Boll has a reputation as one of the worst film directors of all time. In the mid-2000s, he helmed a string of well-publicized but critically savaged video game adaptations that immediately sunk to the bottom of cineastes' estimations. In 2003, he made "House of the Dead," and followed that in 2005 with both "Alone in the Dark" and "BloodRayne." He chased those with "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale," "BloodRayne 2: Deliverance," and "Postal" all in 2007, and capped off his run in 2008 with "Far Cry." Fans of the games on which those films are based were incensed that Boll should so clumsily handle the source material, and fans of the cinematic medium were incensed that

Robert De Niro goes up against Robert De Niro in biographical gangster drama The Alto Knights. Here’s a trailer.
When discussing mob drama The Alto Knights, formerly known as Wiseguys, it is impossible not to think about Martin Scorsese’s seminal gangster film Goodfellas, in which Robert De Niro played the smooth talking Jimmy Conway opposite Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci. The Alto Knights reunites De Niro and screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi for a story that sees De Niro play the dual roles of quarrelling mob bosses.
It’s safe to say we’re rather excited to see this.
The Alto Knights has been a long time coming. The film was stuck in development hell for a number of decades before Warner Bros revived the project in the summer of 2022.

With his latest spy movie Alarum, Scott Eastwood is continuing to churn out bullet-laced action thrillers. Last year saw him in the Los Angeles period caper 1992, trying to pull off the ultimate heist amid the early-'90s Watts riots alongside the late, great Ray Liotta. We've seen him in some of the fun Fast & Furious flicks and assorted war films, like the excellent Fury. Future projects on the horizon include another war film, the highly anticipated Tin Soldier, which also stars big names like Robert De Niro, Jamie Foxx, Rita Ora, John Leguizamo, Shamier Anderson, and more. Filming took place mainly in Greece two years ago, but there hasn't been any news about the movie until now. MovieWeb caught up with Eastwood while he was promoting Alarum, and the famed actor took time to weigh in on the status of Tin Soldier.

Jerry Seinfeld's crowning achievement was not his '90s sitcom "Seinfeld," but his 2007 animated comedy film "Bee Movie," which tells the groundbreaking story of a talking honeybee who somehow seduces a human woman. Seinfeld's second-best achievement was when he tricked comedian Chris Rock into playing a mosquito named Mooseblood in that same film; it was a role that Rock didn't seem too interested in, at least if Rock's words in a 2007 interview are to be believed.
"He told me what it was, but he actually told me [Director Steven] Spielberg was going to be in it and when I get there, there is no Spielberg," Rock explained. "So, he kind of owes me. I don't know how. I'm just gonna hold on to that chip and just figure out when I get to cash it in."
Of course, Chris Rock was just one of many celebrities who were inexplicably involved in "Bee Movie.

In 1967, he directed his first feature movie, entitled Who's That Knocking at My Door. Within ten years, he directed another five movies, namely Mean Streets and Taxi Driver. In total, he's directed 26 narrative feature movies, winning Academy, BAFTA, Emmy, Golden Globes and Grammy Awards. Goodfellas was his movie for 1990. Apple TV+, arguably the most underrated streaming service of them all, will be free to use to celebrate the new year. The streamer houses several acclaimed titles, including Silo, Severance, and Shrinking, among many others, but now those who have yet to watch them will be able to do so at no cost. At the start of 2025, several new seasons of Apple TV+'s flagship shows will arrive on the platform, as well as other lesser-known television shows.

When it comes to epic television miniseries events, some of the best of the bunch are Westerns. Be it Lonesome Dove, Hatfields & McCoys, 1883, or Into the West, there is a lot of history left to uncover. But when it comes to the Western, no state in the union quite hits the horse opera on the head quite like the Lone Star State itself. So, when History Channel produced the five-part Texas Rising in 2015, audiences weren't surprised that the narrative featured quite a dynamic cast of actors that included heavyweights like Bill Paxton, Ray Liotta, Brendan Fraser, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan opposite notable up-and-comers Max Thieriot and Cynthia Addai-Robinson. If you're looking for the next big Western miniseries to devour, look no further than this one, which witnesses the birth of the infamous Texas Rangers.

Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie's bizarre gangster opus Revolver broke their streak, and it took another 16 years to fix it. 1998's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels marked the movie debuts of both director Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham. Statham had many careers before acting - including music video extra and London street trader - but his back-to-back Guy Ritchie movies made him a star practically overnight. Lock, Stock... was a phenomenon when it debuted, while their follow-up Snatch was another sizable hit in 2000, adding stars like Brad Pitt and Benicio del Toro to the ensemble.
Following Snatch, their career paths took different routes. Jason Statham's first action role in Ghosts of Mars led to an entire career in the genre, while Guy Ritchie married Madonna and directed her in 2002's harrowingly terrible romantic drama Swept Away. Ritchie and Statham later reunited for 2005's Revolver, which was meant to...
