‘Kaansya’ Will Screen at the Cinevesture International Film Festival

Mumbai, 18th March 2025: ‘Kaansya’ – an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s ‘Troilus and Cressida’, reimagined within Haryana’s traditional wrestling community, is set to be screened at the Cinevesture International Film Festival in Chandigarh on the 20th and 22nd of March.

Directed by debut filmmaker Aditya Watts, ‘Kaansya’ (which translates to ‘bronzed’ in English) tells the story of Sonam, the wife of a respected akhada owner, who elopes with Randeep, the son of a rival family. Their forbidden love rekindles long-standing feuds, drawing both families into a devastating conflict.

The film stars Vaarun Bhagat (Inside Edge), Lakshya Goel (‘Trial by Fire’), Kritika Pande (The Song of Scorpions) and Saahhil Sethi (Life Hill Gayi) among others, in pivotal roles.

Morgan Freeman paid a special tribute to Gene Hackman Sunday night at the Oscars, calling the late actor a “giant” and a “dear friend.”

“This week our community lost a giant and I lost a dear friend, Gene Hackman,” said Freeman.

The 95-year-old actor and his wife Betsy Arakawa were found dead at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Feb. 26. An investigation into the cause of their deaths, and that of one of their dogs, is ongoing.

“I had the pleasure of working alongside Gene on two films, ‘Unforgiven’ and ‘Under Suspicion.’ Like everyone ever shared a scene with him, I learned he was a generous performer and a man whose gifts elevated everyone’s work,” Freeman continued. Hackman won his second Oscar for playing the villain who kills Freeman’s character in Clint Eastwood’s 1992 western.

MGM+ announced today an eight-episode series order for American Classic, a half-hour comedy series from o-creators Michael Hoffman and Bob Martin (The Prom, Slings and Arrows). The 1985 revival series featured an adaptation of "Gramma," a Lovecraft-inspired short story about a young boy who is left alone with his menacing grandmother.

"Gramma" was thought to be unfilmable due to its reliance on internal monologs and repressed memories, but The Twilight Zone scribe Harlan Ellison proved it could be done. In fact, "Gramma" was also adapted into the 2014 Blumhouse film Mercy, which deepens the story's connection to the Cthulhu mythos. There are, at a minimum, and I checked, 18 bazillion adaptations of William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” It’s one of the most beloved and scrutinized texts in the whole of the English language.

More actors than anyone can count — strike that, I guess there’ve been 18 bazillion — have put their stamp on this 425-year-old play about a prince and his revenge against his conspiring, murderous uncle. The words “to be or not to be” are emblazoned within the global lexicon, preserving forever Shakespeare’s complex thoughts about ending one’s own life, as generation after generation of performers and directors put their own stamp on perhaps the most well-worn dramatic material humanity has.

But I’ve never seen a “to be or not to be” speech quite like the one in “Grand Theft Hamlet.” It is now a speech about life spoken to lifeless automatons, frequently interrupted by real-life jerks who murder the actor mid-speech.
