“The artist’s choice in cinema is without limit; the artist’s choice in literature is circumscribed, while the reverse is true for the observer: the great thing about literature is that you can imagine; the great thing about film is that you can’t.”
The above-mentioned lines were taken from James Monaco’s essay, “The Language of Film: Sign and Syntax” in which he substantiated the major characteristics and techniques of filmmaking and adaptation. Mostly, the quality and shape of the relationships between the filmmaker, his artwork, and his audience should stem from the source and relate back to it. Heading to the theatres to watch an adaptation will be equivalent to letting someone else play with your imagination. Some film adaptations of the play “Romeo and Juliet” written by William Shakespeare took its source material blindly while others negated it. This play was always driven by action and...

The story about the rightful heir to the throne returning to reclaim their kingdom is a tale as old as time. Probably the most popular iteration of this trope was seen in William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Then that was adapted in the form of Akira Kurosawa’s The Bad Sleep Well, Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff’s The Lion King, Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider, and Robert Eggers’ The Northman. Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword had Arthur finding out about his royal heritage after pulling Excalibur from the stone. James Wan’s Aquaman had the titular character living as the son of a lighthouse keeper and then claiming his birthright as the ruler of Atlantis. S.S. Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Beginning was about Siva’s discovery that he was the son of the titular prince. In Game of Thrones, Jon...

Lilo and Stitch trailer nearly breaks Disney record
Disney unveiled the Lilo and Stitch trailer on March 12, and in just 24 hours it amassed 158 million views, which was the second most for a live-action Disney film, behind only 2019's photorealistic The Lion King. It ranked as the No. 1 trend on Twitter and YouTube. Does that bode well for the film's box office when it's released on May 23? Well, The Lion King remake ended up grossing $1.66 billion worldwide.
Lilo and Stitch, based on the 2002 animated film, is about a friendship between a Hawaiian girl and a fugitive alien. It's directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and stars Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Hannah Waddingham, Chris Sanders, Courtney B. Vance, Zach Galifianakis, and newcomer Maia Kealoha.

"The greatest love story of all time, set to the greatest music of our time." That's one of the hooks for the upcoming Romeo and Juliet adaptation from Briarcliff Entertainment, Juliet & Romeo. Briarcliff has set May 9, 2025 (Mother’s Day weekend) as the release date for this bold reimagining of arguably William Shakespeare's most popular play. Joining Briarcliff in bringing this visionary film to the big screen are global independent music powerhouses Lakeshore Records and Broadway Records, in partnership with Hero Entertainment and Rainmaker Films. The synopsis for the film, which seems to be part of a proposed trilogy, reads as follows:
"Set in 1301 at the end of Medieval times, theJuliet & Romeofranchise finds our most famous Star-Crossed lovers turning the tides on the history Shakespeare based his own story on, as they reveal the truth to the very future of the Empire. But the biggest twist in this most beloved of tales,...

Stephen King is one of the most popular authors of all time. Since publishing his first novel, Carrie, in 1974, the author has earned the nickname the "King of Horror." Stephen King's best books include the aforementioned Carrie, as well as The Shining, The Stand, It, Misery, Doctor Sleep, and countless others. Throughout his career, King has published over 60 novels and novellas, many of which have been adapted into movies and television shows.
King is the second most adapted author of all time, only behind William Shakespeare. Therefore, in addition to wide ranging influence in pop culture, it is no surprise that he has an interest in the movie industry. The author is very active on social media, and often writes reviews for the most recent films he has seen. Most recently, King watched one of the highest-rated horror movies of 2025 and gave it a solid review.

People like to say, “It’s never too early” to do something, but that’s not always true. For example, it’s too early to predict next year’s Academy Awards before this year’s Academy Awards. But the 2025 Oscars are over, so now it’s time to start making predictions about what films will contend for the Oscars next year.
It’s already looking like the 98th Academy Awards will have a stronger field than the 97th. Blue chip filmmakers are returning from long breaks with exciting casts in tow. Each Safdie brother has their own A24 sports drama. There’s a new Avatar movie. It’s going to be an exciting, unpredictable year.

First-person shooter (Fps) video games are a dime-a-dozen. Even today, "Call of Duty" dominates mainstream multiplayer gaming, while titles of a similar vein — à la "Apex Legends" or "Valorant" — help shape the genre's ever-evolving nature. However, the Fps genre hallmarks that are taken for granted today were painstakingly shaped by groundbreaking titles that consciously pushed the limits of a shoot-to-kill premise. Some endeavors, like the original "Doom," are still remembered with the nostalgic reverence it deserves (having even inspired an objectively terrible movie adaptation starring Dwayne Johnson). But others, like Steven Spielberg and Electronic Arts' (EA) "Medal of Honor" series, have sadly been relegated to the realm of forgotten Fps games that are no longer relevant.
If you're surprised to see a direct connection between Spielberg and a video game series, it is worth delving into how this came about. Long story short, the now-dissolved game studio DreamWorks Interactive worked...

Morgan Freeman paid a special tribute to Gene Hackman Sunday night at the Oscars, calling the late actor a “giant” and a “dear friend.”
“This week our community lost a giant and I lost a dear friend, Gene Hackman,” said Freeman.
The 95-year-old actor and his wife Betsy Arakawa were found dead at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Feb. 26. An investigation into the cause of their deaths, and that of one of their dogs, is ongoing.
“I had the pleasure of working alongside Gene on two films, ‘Unforgiven’ and ‘Under Suspicion.’ Like everyone ever shared a scene with him, I learned he was a generous performer and a man whose gifts elevated everyone’s work,” Freeman continued. Hackman won his second Oscar for playing the villain who kills Freeman’s character in Clint Eastwood’s 1992 western.
Freeman recalled Hackman telling him, “‘I don’t think about legacy.

Keanu Reeves is one of the most extraordinary movie stars of the past several decades, as he has managed to earn both legitimate praise and ironic appreciation. Although he began appearing in heartthrob roles just as the “Brat Pack” era began its decline, Reeves would become one of the definitive action stars of his generation alongside Tom Cruise and Wesley Snipes. In between his major sequels, Reeves still found a way to take on ambitious projects from acclaimed filmmakers, such as Taylor Hackford’s unusual legal thriller “The Devil’s Advocate” and Nancy Meyers’ charming romantic-comedy “Something’s Gotta Give.”
Despite facing a brief recess in his career after a series of critical disappointments in the first half of the 21st century, Reeves launched a major comeback when the “John Wick” franchise gave him another opportunity to show his merits as an action star. Despite releasing at the end of 2023, one of 2024's biggest sleeper hits at the box office was "Anyone But You," a romantic-comedy starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney as former lovers who cross paths at a destination wedding and pretend to be a couple in order to placate their respective families. Given the film's financial success, it shows a potential bright future for the rom-com genre, which in recent years has struggled to have the success it once had throughout the 2000s with hits like "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and "Knocked Up."
Thanks to "Anyone But You," there are a lot of audiences with a renewed interest in satiating their desire for a raunchy, laugh-out-loud rom-com, especially ones with the hard-to-resist enemies-to-lovers trope, a disastrous wedding, or perhaps a reinterpretation a well-known story in the modern era. Although by 1945 Akira Kurosawa had directed three features already, his fourth project may be considered his “true” first feature. While “Sanshiro Sugata” and “The Most Beautiful” certainly contain elements, scenes and characters which are of note, their status as essentially pro-Japanese propaganda holds them back from fulfilling their true potential, especially since Kurosawa had to obey the rules set by the Japanese censors at the time. However, with “The Men Who Tread on the Tiger’s Tail”, an adaptation of the famous kabuki play “Kanjincho” and the Noh play “Ataka”, Kurosawa finally gets rid of these aforementioned elements, although the film was met with some difficulty upon its release, first by Japanese censors and later on the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces. Nevertheless, this tale of deception and hierarchy is an impressive show of skill from the director who would go on to make some of the most influential and...

Leonardo DiCaprio’s love life really brings to mind that classic William Shakespeare line, “The course of true love never did run smooth” from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It’s almost as if he has been living his own real-life romantic comedy, always on the lookout for that one person to settle down with, but somehow never quite finding the right fit.
With his good looks, globe-trotting lifestyle, and an endless parade of stunning women on his arm, you’d think he’d have found ‘the one’ by now. But nope, the Titanic star seems to still be playing the field, searching for something deeper.

From models with world-class walks to actresses who can steal the show, DiCaprio had more than his fair share of spectacular love interests. But does he find ‘true love’, or is it just a game of musical chairs?...

Since leaving the world of galactic warfare and space wizards behind, Daisy Ridley has built quite an impressive resume for herself. From portraying the lead role in Ophelia, a reimagination of William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" to playing Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel, in her biopic Young Woman and the Sea, Ridley has hopped across genres.
Her next movie, Cleaner, is an action flick that is being compared with the Die Hard series. She is playing Joey, a window cleaner who is also an ex-soldier. The official synopsis revealed that the movie will be set in a London skyscraper that gets hijacked by a group of criminal activists trying to expose an energy company's corruption at their annual gala. One extremist crosses the line and tries to murder everyone in the building, and it falls to Ridley's character - who will be suspended 50 floors up,...

The movie musical has morphed drastically over a century. When the musical genre first came to prominence in the sound era of Hollywood, it was a space for revues with little care or thought as to a storyline connecting musical numbers. Eventually, just as the stage musical changed with "Oklahoma!" and "South Pacific," Hollywood morphed in the same way. But it wasn't just that films such as "An American in Paris" or "The Band Wagon" told full stories with song-and-dance numbers; Hollywood went straight to the source to take stage musicals and adapt them into features. Although we're not in a Golden Age of movie musicals the way that things were in the 1960s, there are plenty of big-budget musical adaptations that burst onto the scene, as well as more low-key affairs meant to match their source material, everything from the mid-2000s adaptation of "Dreamgirls" to "Dear Evan Hansen.

Upon reading just one of her books, it's easy to see why her mysteries have continued entertaining audiences long after her death. She crafted compelling twists and engaging protagonists, with Hercule Poirot being her most brilliant creation, but she also wrote adventures starring Miss Marple and Parker Pyne in case anyone wanted a break for Hercule every now and then.
Christie's novels have been adapted many times over into movies, stage plays, and television shows, and she's inspired generations of mystery writers. Writer/director Rian Johnson even said he looked toward Christie for inspiration when figuring out how to take "Glass Onion" in a new direction after "Knives Out." It's easy to see why, as she was prone to playing with genres. Though her books may have largely been mysteries, there were also elements of comedy...

From Schindler’s List to The English Patient to the Harry Potter films to Conclave, Ralph Fiennes has had a celebrated career as a leading star and character actor.
The British performer, who graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, is adept at playing compromised men on the big screen, such as his Austrian Nazi Amon Göth, who oversees the building of a concentration camp in Poland in Schindler’s List. In 2011, Fiennes made his big-screen directorial debut and also starred in William Shakespeare’s tragedy Coriolanus. He starred, produced and directed 2013’s The Invisible Woman, where he portrayed Charles Dickens. Most notably, Fiennes has been in several Best Picture Oscar winners including 1993’s Schindler’s List, The English Patient, and 2009’s The Hurt Locker. His 2022 movie The Menu brought him a Golden Globe nomination in the comedy/musical category. And his 2024 film Conclave, in which he plays an embattled...

Harold Perrineau's amazing performance as Sheriff Boyd Stevens is a huge part of what makes From such a great show. He masterfully translates from script to screen the tough ex-military man turned emergency sheriff, growing ill and emotionally unstable, but still keeping his head high. Fans can't wait to see what Season 4 will bring for his character after such intense challenges so far. But some may not know the actor has had an amazing career on television before starring in the ongoing horror series. He's known for playing Augustus Hill in HBO's Oz from 1997 to 2003, and he had already proven his talent for sci-fi mysteries as Michael Dawson in Lost in 2004, long before taking on the main role in From.
At the same time, fans of these TV shows may not have noticed or may not remember, but Perrineau has also appeared in several popular films since 1988 -- when...

"What's in a name?" William Shakespeare's Juliet once asked. "That which we call a rose, by any other word would smell as sweet." That may be true, as far as it goes, but would an A-List actor by any other name sell as many box office tickets?
An actor's name is their brand, so choosing the right name to attach your career to is of the utmost importance. An actor's name can signal all sorts of things to an audience -- familiarity or friendliness, sexiness or masculinity. Some names signal cultural identity, while others are designed to be as bland as possible so as to avoid drawing the wrong sort of attention from a prejudiced crowd. Actors may even adopt different names for simplicity's sake, or to craft an identity wholly separate from their private lives. With all that in mind, read on to learn about fifteen actors who changed their names for Hollywood.

While Mark Wahlberg's Flight Risk may not rank highly with audiences, it did earn him a new ranking elsewhere. The action thriller premiered in theaters last weekend and overtook Mufasa: The Lion King at the box office, grossing over $13 million. This latest role helped Wahlberg overtake another Hollywood legend, Denzel Washington, on a list of the highest-grossing stars of all time, per The Numbers. While both actors sit at $2.7 billion earned at the domestic box office, Wahlberg now holds the #40 spot.
Flight Risk follows the story of a U.S. Marshall transferring a witness to New York on a small plane across the Alaskan wilderness. However, tensions rise as he realizes the other passengers are not who they pretend to be. Michelle Dockery, Topher Grace, Leah Remini, Monib Abhat, and Paul Ben-Viktor round out the cast with Mel Gibson directing.

Sing Sing is a new prison drama film that might initially seem a little too similar to other films of the genre, in which we essentially follow prison inmates in their endeavor to understand and accept the conditions of their present life. But just a few minutes into its runtime, this film starts to stand out, both because of the extremely real and convincing approach it takes with its characters and their motivations and also due to the overarching sense of hope that guides it. By the end, it is really remarkable how Sing Sing beautifully talks about all the facets of life behind bars and the associated potential of life, and the film is an absolute must-watch for fans of serious drama.
Spoiler Alert
What is the film about?

The Substance director Coralie Fargeat has revealed that she could have instead been the director of Marvel’s Black Widow.
Starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, wildly satirical body horror The Substance has emerged as one of the most acclaimed films of 2024, and has since been nominated for five Oscars, including Best Picture. In a surprising twist, its director, French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, has revealed that her film may never have happened if she’d responded to the lure of Marvel.
In an interview with Variety that’s well worth a read, Fargeat reveals that Marvel offered her the chance to direct the 2020 film Black Widow following the critical success of her absorbing and propulsive 2017 thriller, Revenge. Fargeat reveals that even though she was “broke” at the time, she resisted the financial muscle of Marvel’s offer because she didn’t believe Marvel would grant her final cut.

Nothing quite screams the late aughts and early 2010's like a comedy loosely related to a classic work of literature. There was She's the Man starring Amanda Bynes, which was based on the William Shakespeare play Twelfth Night. There was the absolute classic that was 10 Things I Hate About You, starring Julia Styles and the late-great Heath Ledger, which was based on The Taming of the Shrew. In 2010, one comedy came about loosely related to Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. Now, Easy A starring Emma Stone, is coming to Hulu next month.

William Shakespeare once said, “All the world’s a stage,” but for Kevin Kline, the stage is a way of life, and his love for theater is vast. MGM+ announced today an eight-episode series order for American Classic, a half-hour comedy series from o-creators Michael Hoffman and Bob Martin (The Prom, Slings and Arrows). American Classic stars Kevin Sline as Richard Bean and Jon Tenney as Jon Bean. Hoffman directs the series, with production kicking into high gear later this year in New Jersey.
Here’s an official description of American Classic courtesy of MGM+:
“American Classic centers on Broadway star and notorious narcissist Richard Bean, played by Kline, who suffers a spectacular public meltdown and returns to his hometown and the family-run theater where he first became aware of his own brilliance. When he arrives, he is shocked to discover that his father, the former artistic director, has...

We could be looking at one of, if not the best video game movie ever made, as the unorthodox documentary Grand Theft Hamlet impresses critics far more than anyone likely anticipated. Telling the story of Sam Crane and Mark Oosterveen as they attempt to cast and produce a version of William Shakespeare’s "Hamlet" within the virtual world of Grand Theft Auto Online, Grand Theft Hamlet is now “certified fresh” with a hugely impressive score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Reviews have praised the unique cinematic undertaking, with William Bibbiani of TheWrap disappointed that Grand Theft Hamlet didn’t go on longer.
“If there is one disappointing element of this moving, amusing, sad and memorable film it’s that it isn’t five hours long.”

Akira Kurosawa is the William Shakespeare of cinema. Whether implicitly or explicitly, every film, to one degree or another, is influenced by the legendary Japanese director's work. Kurosawa's influence is evident in all modern classics, from franchise blockbusters like Star Wars to prestigious dramas like The Godfather. Unfairly or not, the scope and grandeur of any historical epic will always be measured to Seven Samurai. Nonlinear storytelling and alternate perspectives are frequently repeated cinematic devices, and it's all a credit to Kurosawa, whose classic film, Rashomon, established the theory of the Rashomon Effect about the unreliability of eyewitness testimony. If there is one well that movies and television have returned to more than any, it's the world of cops and criminal investigations. Kurosawa, of course, also established the modern police procedural with his early classic, Stray Dog, which also serves as the archetypal buddy-cop movie.

His distinctive stories about ordinary citizens confronting the extraordinary — which sometimes lurks within themselves — have influenced generations of creators, some of whom have brought his work to the screen. This list of ten powerful films explores what makes a great adaptation of Stephen King's unique writing.
With 65 novels and countless short works under his belt, Stephen King is one of the most adapted authors of all time, coming in third behind Agatha Christie and William Shakespeare. It is hard to keep count of all the screen versions of his stories, but his writing has given rise to many major cinematic achievements. The following films showcase exactly why King's horrific ideas are a perfect match for Hollywood.

Hollywood has, in recent years, truly begun to crack the code on video game movies. The impressive success of adaptations such as "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" has cemented the fact that we've truly turned a corner in that regard. That being the case, just about every major video game is probably going to be targeted by studios in the coming years, and Grand Theft Auto will undoubtedly be on that list. Interestingly enough, though, a truly excellent movie set in the world of GTA recently hit theaters, and with the full support of GTA creator Rockstar Games, no less.
One would be forgiven for not knowing about it since it's kind of a small movie, but the documentary "Grand Theft Hamlet" recently hit theaters via the folks at Mubi. For those who aren't aware of it, as the title implies, it mashes together the worlds of GTA and William Shakespeare,...

When Jim Henson died in 1990, he had already negotiated a deal to sell his beloved Muppet characters to the Disney corporation, feeling that a big, brand-driven company could keep Muppet movies alive while he took a break to focus on more creative, strange, ambitious projects. Disney has since run hot and cold with the Muppets, making several notable hit films, but also multiple forgettable TV specials, and a few TV shows, two of which spectacularly bombed.
Making movies with the Muppets, Disney has learned, requires a gentle balance. Kermit the Frog is an innocent, honest character, devoid of cynicism, but the Muppets have always possessed an element of self-awareness. The original "The Muppet Show," after all, was half a variety program with singing/dancing Muppet performers, and half backstage drama with picky Muppet actors and overwhelmed Muppet stagehands. As January wraps up, Hulu is keeping the momentum going with an impressive lineup of new titles next month. Whether you’re into movies, TV shows, or both, there’s plenty to keep you entertained throughout February.
Hulu is starting strong with over 60 new titles arriving on February 1 alone. Some standout additions include Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2, as well as all four seasons of the classic ’90s drama New York Undercover.
Reality TV fans will also have something to look forward to with the season six premiere of The Kardashians.
But as exciting as the new arrivals are, there’s always the bittersweet reality that some beloved titles are leaving. In February, Hulu will only be removing movies, so TV lovers can breathe easy. However, the list of departing films includes some good titles, like Titane (2021) and Spencer (2021), which earned Kristen Stewart an Oscar nomination.

After William Shakespeare and Agatha Christie, Stephen King is the most-frequently adapted author in history. His work has graced the big and small screens countless times, but he only crossed over into The Twilight Zone once. The 1985 revival series featured an adaptation of "Gramma," a Lovecraft-inspired short story about a young boy who is left alone with his menacing grandmother.
"Gramma" was thought to be unfilmable due to its reliance on internal monologs and repressed memories, but The Twilight Zone scribe Harlan Ellison proved it could be done. In fact, "Gramma" was also adapted into the 2014 Blumhouse film Mercy, which deepens the story's connection to the Cthulhu mythos. Fans can compare these interpretations to Stephen King's original vision by reading Skeleton Crew, the Stephen King collection that also includes the newly-adapted story "The Monkey."

Ever since its launch, Grand Theft Auto Online has been a massive home for a variety of players, whether it's friends looking to embark on crazy missions, or individuals looking to create the most chaos and damage possible. Uniquely, Grand Theft Hamlet seeks to break the series' violence-driven formula to create a more engaging and innovative format for what the Rockstar game could be, though it is slightly hampered by the lack of longevity in its premise.

There are, at a minimum, and I checked, 18 bazillion adaptations of William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” It’s one of the most beloved and scrutinized texts in the whole of the English language.
More actors than anyone can count — strike that, I guess there’ve been 18 bazillion — have put their stamp on this 425-year-old play about a prince and his revenge against his conspiring, murderous uncle. The words “to be or not to be” are emblazoned within the global lexicon, preserving forever Shakespeare’s complex thoughts about ending one’s own life, as generation after generation of performers and directors put their own stamp on perhaps the most well-worn dramatic material humanity has.
But I’ve never seen a “to be or not to be” speech quite like the one in “Grand Theft Hamlet.” It is now a speech about life spoken to lifeless automatons, frequently interrupted by real-life jerks who murder the actor mid-speech.

In the world of gaming, there are few names bigger than Grand Theft Auto. While the games have been incredibly popular since their inception, it was the release of Grand Theft Auto V more than a decade ago that took the series to the stratosphere. More importantly, Grand Theft Auto Online gave the series new life, and has since become one of the most popular games on the planet. It's only natural that the game would make a good subject for a movie. It's far less natural that said movie would also involve the work of famed playwright William Shakespeare. Yet, here we are.

Stephen King is not only a celebrated author with millions of copies sold worldwide, but one of the writers with the most book-to-movie adaptations made of his work, along with literary giants like William Shakespeare and Agatha Christie. Although mostly associated with the horror and fantasy genres, King's work ranges within a vast spectrum from crime and mystery to drama and adventure and, sometimes, a mix of all of the above. One of the most celebrated films based on King's books, the 1986 film Stand By Me is an epic coming-of-age adventure at heart with a touch of mystery.
Stand By Me became an instant hit and went down in history as a 1980s cinema hallmark, renowned for its four amazing performances, with late child prodigy River Phoenix standing out as Chris. Based on King's novella titled The Body, the story resonates deeply with readers and viewers alike for many reasons.
