Pedro Almodóvar, who has had a decades-long relationship with the New York Film Festival, will receive a lifetime honor from its presenting organization next month.
The 50th annual Chaplin Award will be presented to the filmmaker April 28 at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. Presenters who will pay tribute to him at the gala event include performer and artistic director Mikhail Baryshnikov; actress Rossy de Palma (the honoree’s longtime muse); pop star Dua Lipa; actor John Turturro; and filmmaker John Waters.
The Chaplin Award Gala is Film at Lincoln Center’s primary annual fundraising event. Proceeds benefit the nonprofit’s programs, including film series, educational initiatives, and marquee events like the New York Film Festival and New Directors/New Films.
The list of previous Chaplin recipients includes Jeff Bridges, Viola Davis, Robert De Niro, Barbara Streisand, Sidney Poitier, Michael Caine, Audrey Hepburn, Robert Altman, Billy Wilder and Elizabeth Taylor.

I have always been aware of the 1969 British film A Touch of Love, but I knew relatively little about it other than it starred Sandy Dennis and Ian McKellen. The title is misleading, to say the least, and the author of its screenplay, Margaret Drabble, was not happy with it either – the title, that is. Neither was she wild about the American moniker, Thank You All Very Much. Neither really sums up the content or the tone of the film, which was adapted by Dame Margaret from her own 1965 novel The Millstone, the name of which the producers, horror tycoons Max Rosenberg and Milton Subotsky, were none too happy with, either. Being a restored title as part of StudioCanal’s Vintage Classics Collection, it does though offer considerable historical merit and had a significant impact on changing the attitude and practices of the NHS.

Tom Cruise To Be Honoured With BFI Fellowship As Part Of Month-Long Celebration Of The Star’s Career
Over the last four decades, few figures in the world of film have given as much to the form as Thomas Cruise Mapother IV — or, as we know him best, Tom Cruise. Across 47 films and counting, cinema's real-life action man has run, jumped, climbed, flown, cycled, dived, danced, danced some more, fought, and even breathed his own carbon dioxide, all in service of making the big screen experience as big as it can possibly be. Now, in recognition of his years of service to cinema, both as an actor and producer, the BFI have today announced they'll be celebrating Cruise by awarding the star their highest honour — the BFI Fellowship.
The official press release from the BFI announces that "The Fellowship recognises Cruise’s achievements as an extraordinary, versatile actor whose career has spanned everything from critically acclaimed dramas and romances to dark thrillers and high-octane action films." What's more,...

Tom Cruise is set to receive the British Film Institute’s highest honor, the BFI Fellowship.
The Hollywood star — currently in the U.K. shooting Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s as-yet-untitled film for Warner Bros. and Legendary — is being recognized for both his “achievements as an extraordinary, versatile actor,” according to the BFI, and his “huge contribution to the UK film industry.”
Indeed, alongside Iñárritu’s project, Cruise has spent a large proportion of the last few decades living and working in the U.K., where he has shot numerous “Mission: Impossible” films on location around the country. He famously broke his ankle while filming “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” in London, while much of the final installment, “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,” rumoured to be premiering at the Cannes Film Festival in May, was shot in the U.K. at both Longcross Studios and in the Lake District.

Italy’s Taormina Film Festival will pay homage to its Sicilian setting by celebrating the 25th anniversary of Giuseppe Tornatore’s steamy period drama “Malena” that launched Monica Bellucci’s international career.
The storied event, now headed once again by marketing guru Tiziana Rocca, will host a screening of a restored copy of the film about a 13-year-old boy’s obsession with a small-town siren in World War II Sicily that becomes the sad odyssey of a woman punished for her beauty, and is featuring a still of Bellucci in “Malena” on its poster.

Who’s the most legendary movie icon to lend a voice on The Simpsons?
Given the show’s 36 seasons, there’s plenty of competition for that accolade, including Meryl Streep, Dustin Hoffman and Kirk Douglas. But for pure Hollywood glamour, it’s hard to beat Elizabeth Taylor, the voice behind Maggie Simpson’s first word. “She lived up to everything you would expect Elizabeth Taylor to be,” Simpsons executive producer Al Jean told Entertainment Weekly in 2011. “She came in, she had a little dog, and she wore her ring, which was huge. It cost more than my house.”
Everyone on The Simpsons remembers the huge crowd of staffers that showed up on the day that Taylor recorded Maggie’s first word. “Liz created the biggest stir of any guest we’ve had on the show,” remembered writer Mike Reiss in his book Springfield Confidential. “Three hundred people packed our tiny...

Meghan Markle’s estranged father, Thomas Markle, has slammed his daughter’s new Netflix show, “With Love, Meghan” and claims, “Meghan has never been authentic” and is “out of touch with the real world.”
Mr. Markle Is Offended By Meghan Insisting She Is Called “Meghan Sussex”
Mr. Markle is also not too keen on Meghan, insisting that she be called “Meghan Sussex.” In what many viewers dubbed an “astonishingly rude moment,” Meghan corrected her celebrity friend, Mindy Kaling.
She said,
“It’s so funny you keep saying Meghan Markle, you know I’m a Sussex now.”
Meghan claimed that Sussex is a meaningful last name she shares with her kids. However, she’s still trying to capitalize on her royal title.
Mr. Markle explained,
“My mum loved Meghan very much but would be so disappointed to hear that Meghan no longer wants to use the name ‘Markle.’ My mother was proud to be a Markle.

Today, Cleopatra isn't a particularly noteworthy film. It looks and plays in the exact way that a classical Hollywood epic from the '60s or further back should. Only cinephiles who love old-school Hollywood would watch it. However, these are not the reasons why the film entered the public lexicon. Rather, it's because Cleopatra was simultaneously the biggest film and the biggest box office bomb in history when it was released in 1963.
Even now — and especially in light of rumors of its long-gestating remake — Cleopatra's highs and lows remind audiences of a time that modern Hollywood claims to have outgrown, even if questionable financial decisions and trends say otherwise. That said, the film isn't just an old history lesson that people cite on occasion. Cleopatra is also responsible for killing Hollywood's golden age, and for causing a ripple effect that can still be felt today.

At the 97th Academy Awards this past Sunday, Mikey Madison won Best Actress in a Leading Role for her eponymous role in Sean Baker's Anora. Anoratook home five other Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. It follows the titular character as she embarks on a whirlwind romance and eventual "fraud marriage" with the son of a Russian Oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn). In her victory speech, the 25-year-old Madison(who also made history by becoming the first Gen Z actor to win an Oscar) proudly thanked and honored the sex worker community.
While Anora and Mikey Madison's win is one of the most overt examples of the Oscars recognizing sex work in recent memory, it has happened more times than many people may realize. 14 different women have taken home Academy Awards for portraying sex workers. In fact, Emma Stone also won in 2024 for portraying Bella Baxter in Yorgos Lantimos' Poor Things.

Gossip Girl star Blake Lively is one of the stars who has been the topic of discussion ever since she dropped the lawsuit against her co-star Justin Baldoni and his production company in December 2024. Of course, Baldoni, who not only co-starred opposite Lively but also served as the director of the movie It Ends With Us, was not going to sit back and accept the allegations. He has since then filed a lawsuit against the New York Times, Blake Lively, and her husband Ryan Reynolds.

Boy oh boy, Seinfeld writers loved writing for J. Peterman, the semi-fictional catalogue mogul and boss to Elaine Benes — at least according to John O'Hurley. The reason, he explained on a recent episode of the Still Here Hollywood podcast, was that Peterman gave the scribes a chance to pen some hilariously lengthy monologues.
The character’s speaking style was based on the florid prose found in the real J. Peterman catalog. O’Hurley, who played Peterman over 22 Seinfeld episodes, likened the catalog’s writing style to Ernest Hemingway meets a 1940s radio drama combined with “a bit of a bad Charles Kuralt.” It was a perfect chance for writers to let loose. But unfortunately, O’Hurley says, many of those monologues ended up on the cutting room floor.
The show was disorganized and “always too long,” says O’Hurley, making wordy diatribes an easy cut when the show was running long.

Did Mikey Madison win an Oscar for portraying a prostitute in Anora? (Photo Credit – AnoraFilm Instagram)
The 2025 Academy Awards came and went in a whirlwind, forging legacies for a slew of talents, though it’s the newcomers who galvanize the most intrigue with their ties to the golden statuette. Amid the night’s fervor, one victory stood out — a triumph that spotlights both a fresh face and a storied trope.
Mikey Madison, the 25-year-old dynamo from Anora, seized her first Oscar for Best Actress, outpacing The Substance’s Demi Moore in a twist few had prognosticated. The win, flanked by Anora’s haul of Best Picture, Director, and more, incentivized a floodlight on her nascent Hollywood path.

Few filmmakers love war more than Steven Spielberg. The Hollywood legend has tapped into the genre a whopping nine times (including TV shows), collecting many accolades. His war movies — covering all the major global conflicts before the 21st century — are also some of the highest-grossing Hollywood productions of all time. His love for the genre is hardly surprising, considering his father was a veteran who fought Japanese soldiers in Burma during World War II. The friends of Spielberg’s dad were veterans too, so all everyone could talk about during his childhood was war.

Dito Montiel's newest film features a cast loaded with talent, including Jennifer Coolidge, Bill Murray, Gabrielle Union, and Pete Davidson – not too shabby for a former hardcore punk rocker from New York whose path to filmmaking included a pit stop as a Versace model. The director, who made his debut with A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints, based on his own memoir, is back with a new crime thriller, Riff Raff, a darkly comic story that necessitated a very special brand of leading lady.
Before Montiel put the cast of Riff Raff together, he knew he needed a distinct type of star to fill a massively important role. As Montiel tells MovieWeb, it started with a simple question:
"Who's Elizabeth Taylor today, you know? I was watching White Lotus, which is about as highbrow as it gets for me, and I'm thinking, Who is this lady? She's freaking great.

Pilar Del Rey, the character actress perhaps best remembered for her turn in Giant as the Mexican woman who has a seriously ill newborn who grows up to be the doomed World War II soldier played by Sal Mineo, has died. She was 95.
Del Rey died Sunday in Los Angeles of natural causes, her family announced.

Pilar Del Rey, a veteran character actor who appeared with James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor in Giant and guested on dozens of classic TV series, died February 23 of natural causes in Los Angeles. She was 95. A family spokesperson confirmed the news to Deadline.
In George Stevens’ 1956 epic Giant, Del Rey played the sickly Mrs. Obregon, who is cared for along with her baby by Taylor’s Leslie Benedict as an impatient Jett Rink (Dean) tries to rush her. Leslie’s learning of the local Mexican ranch workers’ living conditions and the racist attitudes toward them is a key early plot point in the film, which drew nine Oscar noms including Best Picture. Stevens won for Best Director.
Born on May 26, 1929, in Fort Worth, Texas, Del Rey made her film debut in the late 1940s. A Spanish-American, she portrayed characters from various ethnic backgrounds with depth and authenticity.

Winning an Oscar is supposed to be the pinnacle, right? The ultimate stamp of approval, the golden ticket to prestige projects and paychecks. But how could it ever be that simple? There’s a long history of actors who, after basking in the glow of their Academy Award moment, have suddenly found themselves struggling to land roles, battling weird industry backlash, or – if they happen to be a woman – being deemed “too difficult” overnight.
Some just call it the Oscar curse, because Hollywood loves to anoint a star, but it also loves to tear one down. Having said that, there’s a rare breed of actors who not only win an Oscar but do it again. And again. So who are these titans of the Academy, the actors who didn’t just win but kept winning?

When Halle Berry made her big-screen debut as the crack-addicted Vivian in the most harrowing section of Spike Lee's "Jungle Fever," she put the entire world on notice that she was going to be an actor first and a movie star second. Obviously, she would quickly learn early in her career to play the Hollywood game and accept thinly-written roles that asked her to do little more than look like one of the most breathtakingly beautiful people on the planet, but she never went more than a year or two without challenging herself. This was particularly difficult to do, given the dearth of complex roles being written for Black women at the time.
Berry was 10 years into her film acting career when she landed the role that would change everything for her. As Leticia Musgrove in Marc Forster's bleak 2001 drama "Monster's Ball," she summoned up a fierce symphony of heartbreak,...

A dog is a man's best friend, but do we really deserve them? It's a rhetorical question. Of course we don't deserve dogs, cats, geckos, or any other animal you can think of -- just look at the state of the world we're giving them! Let's forget about that for now, though, and simply appreciate the joy that our canine friends bring, both in the real world and on the screen. They're our companions, guards, workers, friends, and occasional arbiters of our own demise, and we love them for it.
Dogs have been a part of the movies since the early days of cinema, and it might surprise you to learn that it was a dog who won the very first Oscar for Best Actor! While they're usually mere supporting players, plenty of movies have had the wisdom to feature our canine friends in leading roles for comedies, thrillers, dramas,...

Elizabeth Taylor was the glamorous Hollywood icon who starred in dozens of movies throughout her career, collecting two Best Actress trophies at the Oscars and three additional nominations. But how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1932, Taylor began her career as a child actress, landing her first leading role when she was just 12-years-old with “National Velvet” (1944). She quickly transitioned into adult stardom, earning her first Oscar nomination as Best Actress for “Raintree County” (1957). Subsequent bids for “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” (1958) and “Suddenly, Last Summer” (1959) quickly followed.
She collected her first statuette playing a prostitute with man troubles in “Butterfield 8” (1960), a film she openly hated. Her win probably had more to do with an emergency tracheotomy she underwent right before the ceremony than the performance, but either way, Taylor was...

Once a prestige genre with lavish spectacle and global stars, it’s since grown pretty dusty and drear. But Nolan’s Odyssey may yet revive its bronzed vigour
Back in the 1950s and 60s in the twilight of Hollywood’s golden era, the sword-and-sandals movie stood as tall as the Colossus of Rhodes. It was a time when burly men in togas and gleaming bronze breastplates fought existential battles with fate. When Ben-Hur had its chariot race, Spartacus roused cries of defiance and the odd moment of splendid anachronism, and Cleopatra had Elizabeth Taylor burning through costume changes like a pharaoh with an Amex card.
And then, it all collapsed. By the 1970s, audiences weren’t interested in ancient glories any more; they wanted Vietnam war movies, paranoid political thrillers and antiheroes who didn’t spend half their films glistening in olive oil. By the time Star Wars arrived in...

The past decade has seen some surprisingly high-profile films cancelled, shelved, axed or scrapped. Here they are – all 10 of the poor things.
Film history is littered with abandoned productions, false starts and projects that have withered on the creative vine. What is relatively unusual, though, is for a movie to get through weeks of shooting only for it to be axed at the editing stage.
When we consider how much work goes into a film production before a camera even rolls – casting, building sets, securing locations – the notion that a film could be scrapped at such a late stage seems almost inconceivable. Particularly given that, in the past, films have survived genuine tragedies – The Twilight Zone, The Crow – and still made their way into cinemas.

However, a new opportunity arises when Richard’s natural talent for drama catches the attention of his teacher, Philip Burton.
Taking Richard under his wing, the young man thrives thanks to Philip’s strict tutelage and the guidance of kindly landlady, Ma Smith. However, as the acting world comes within Richard’s reach, the burden of his past risks holding him back forever.

Marketing guru Tiziana Rocca, who has close Hollywood ties and is a festivals specialist, has been appointed artistic director of Italy’s Taormina Film Festival in a move that brings her back at the helm of the storied Sicilian event that has had its ups and downs over the years.
Rocca will heading Taormina once again eight years after she was forced to step down due to political infighting in 2017 following a solid five year stint. At that time Rocca lost a legal battle to stay on board as the fest’s chief after she claimed that her company Agnus Dei had been unfairly left out of the pitching competition for a new mandate to run the event.
In the eight year interim since Rocca was ousted Taormina has seen several upheavals and struggled to find its footing amid a succession of different artistic directors, including former Venice chief Marco Mueller...

What makes an actor? Since the very first Screen Actors Guild Awards in 1995, actors have shared what it means to work in Hollywood with the “I am an actor” speech.
The tradition began with Angela Lansbury, who detailed her accomplishments on screen at the inaugural SAG Awards: “I’ve been Elizabeth Taylor’s sister, Spencer Tracy’s mistress, Elvis’ mother, and a singing teapot,” she said. She reminded her peers that, “at one time or another, everyone loves the opportunity to act,” even a child with a creative imagination for playing pretend. And she embraced the spirit of the SAG Awards as a night dedicated to “the art and craft of acting by the people who should know about it.”

Brynner died Saturday in Lausanne, Switzerland, following a short illness, her daughter Victoria confirmed to Women’s Wear Daily.

Exclusive: Dafydd Jones first went to Hollywood in the 1980s to take photographs for Vanity Fair. He would lurk, unfailingly polite and unobtrusive, and take pictures of the rich and famous.
The parties were truly glamorous then. Wall to wall megawatt stars. Jack Nicholson and Elizabeth Taylor (never ‘Liz!’) at Swifty Lazar’s last hurrah at Spago in 1993 is what I’m talking about.
The hordes of advertisers and folk who had zero affinity with movies except to rub up against film stars and Hollywood players came later.

Michael Jackson Supermarket Trip (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Michael Jackson once turned grocery shopping into a Thriller-esque spectacle. In the early 2000s, the King of Pop, who’d never roamed a supermarket “like everyone else,” enlisted a Florida mall owner to stage a faux shopping spree. The store was cleared, staffed by his inner circle, and filmed for Michael Jackson’s Private Home Movies on Fox 2003.
“It’s my dream to go into a supermarket and just shop. People crowd around me…I don’t see the real thing,” Jackson explained in the footage. To mimic reality, his team transformed the venue post-closing hours. Relatives became cashiers, his nanny hid under a blonde wig, and a pan-pipe cover of Billie Jean hummed overhead. Even a Life magazine featuring a close friend, Elizabeth Taylor, was strategically placed.

Timothée Chalamet and the late James Dean are the only men who have earned two Best Actor Oscar nominations before the age of 30, according to film historian Mark Harris (per Bluesky). Chalamet was first nominated for the prestigious acting Academy Award thanks to his work in the coming-of-age romance, Call Me by Your Name (2017), and then he picked up another nod back on Jan. 23 for portraying legendary musician Bob Dylan in the must-see biopic, A Complete Unknown.
Hollywood icon James Dean tragically died at the age of 24 on Sept. 30, 1955, during a head-on collision in the rural California community of Cholame. Margot Robbie Brad Pitt Kiss Scene (Photo Credit – Instagram)
When Margot Robbie kissed Brad Pitt in Babylon, it wasn’t just a moment between two Hollywood heavyweights—it was pure spontaneity. The scene, now iconic, was not in the script. Robbie decided on the fly that her character, Nellie Laroy, had to kiss Pitt’s Jack Conrad. And, let’s be honest, when else would she get that chance?

“It wasn’t in the script,” Robbie told E! News. “But I thought, ‘When else will I get to kiss Brad Pitt? I’m just gonna go for it.’” Robbie wasn’t just playing the part—she was living the moment, fully embracing the chaos that is her character in Babylon.

Fernanda Torres and Karla Sofía Gascón made history on Thursday as the first pair of Best Actress Oscar nominees for non-English language performances in nearly 50 years. Torres stars in Sony Pictures Classics’ I’m Still Here from Brazil, while Gascón leads in Netflix’s Emilia Pérez from France. This marks the fourth time two actors have been nominated for non-English roles for different movies in the same year. They will compete against Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Mikey Madison (Anora), and Demi Moore (The Substance). Both films are cited for Best International Feature and Best Picture while Emilia Pérez became the most-nominated international movie with 13 mentions.
In the Walter Salles‘ political biopic, Torres portrays Portuguese-speaking human rights activist Eunice Paiva, who searches for her missing husband, politician Rubens Paiva, during the Brazilian Military Dictatorship in 1971. Torres’ only precursor recognition was at the Golden Globes, where she surprised in Best Drama Actress. Despite missing at the Critics Choice,...

One of the remarkable things about "The Simpsons" was how quickly the show built enough cultural cache to attract big-name guest stars. As early as its first season, Albert Brooks was playing French bowling instructor Jacques in "Life on the Fast Lane." Since then, celebrities have continued to flock to the series, to the extent that the best guest stars on "The Simpsons" include some of the most well-known and influential cultural figures of the last three decades.
From A-list actors such as Michelle Pfeiffer and Dustin Hoffman to musical legends such as Johnny Cash, the show has drawn talent from across the cultural sphere — though Bruce Springsteen still refuses to cameo in "The Simpsons." But even Bruce Springsteen isn't as tough to get as two of producer Al Jean's dream cameos. These two figures are just as prestigious as anyone else who's appeared on "The Simpsons," but there...

Valentino is one of Europe’s most recognizable fashion brands. The brand is among the last great fashion houses created in Hollywood’s golden era. Valentino would come to unite Hollywood stars, political icons, and European royalty under one label.

Eric Weissmann, the veteran entertainment attorney who repped Rita Hayworth, Robert Altman, Elizabeth Taylor and Gene Wilder in a career that lasted more than five decades, has died. He was 94.
Weissmann died Dec. 15 in Denver of natural causes, his granddaughter Sara McCrea told The Hollywood Reporter.
His clients also included David Carradine and Keith Carradine, Peter Bogdanovich, Robert Aldrich, Paul Mazursky and Mark Rydell.
In 2012, Weissmann founded his own practice after spending many years as a senior partner with the Beverly Hills firm Weissmann Wolff Bergman Coleman Grodin. “I look forward to enjoying the freedom of being on my own and devoting full time to my clients,” he said then.
That move came in the wake of Weissmann Wolff merging with Sacramento-based Weintraub Genshlea Chediak Tobin & Tobin, effectively bringing to an end an entertainment law firm that had been a player in Hollywood since the early 1980s.

In the entire history of the Academy Awards, only six Best Picture winners have been 100 minutes or less. It seems that traditional, Oscar-bait "prestige" pictures tend to run long, attracting Academy voters with their sheer volume. Extra-long films are also a little rare, though, as only five Best Picture Winners are 200 minutes or more. Additionally, a whopping 18 Best Pictures have been between 160 and 195 minutes, so voters clearly don't mind longer movies. Indeed, the average length of a Best Picture winner is 136 minutes. In terms of cinematic storytelling, that seems to be the sweet spot.
Of course, Roger Ebert's adage needs to be mentioned. The famed critics once posited that no good movie is too long, and no bad movie is short enough. The actual length of a film doesn't really matter, so long as it's a quality picture, and it makes good use of its time. Personally, I feel...
