Sad to say, but "Mickey 17" is going to lose a boatload of cash for Warner Bros. The latest from Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho (of "Parasite" fame) had long been delayed and finally hit theaters earlier this month. Unfortunately, the results at the box office were not what anyone had hoped for. Now, WB is about to take a serious loss on the film during its theatrical run. In fact, the losses are steep enough that making up the revenue on VOD and streaming down the line is going to be a serious challenge.
According to Variety, "Mickey 17" is now projected to lose between $75 and $80 million during its theatrical run. It carries a sizable $118 million price tag, which is an awful lot for a non-franchise film these days. "Mickey 17" flopped in its debut, pulling in just $19 million domestically earlier this month. One Battle After Another will officially slug it out with the fall’s top awards contenders. On Thursday, Warner Bros. confirmed Paul Thomas Anderson’s new movie with Leonardo DiCaprio, initially dated somewhat perplexingly for Aug. 8, will arrive in theaters on Sept. 26 — a release date that all but assures Anderson’s latest of launching at one of the significant fall festivals in Venice, Telluride, or Toronto.
Still, regardless of its calendar placement, One Battle After Another was always considered one of the year’s top potential Oscar films, sight unseen. Anderson’s movies have racked up several nominations over the last two decades, as have DiCaprio’s many acclaimed features. It’s always possible that One Battle After Another is the exception, not the rule — especially because Anderson’s last dalliance with the work of Thomas Pynchon, Inherent Vice (more on that below), didn’t connect with the Academy significantly.

“Mickey 17,” Bong Joon Ho’s wacky sci-fi satire, is shaping up to be a major money loser for Warner Bros. following its rocky box office reception.
The film, which stars Robert Pattinson as a clone who works menial jobs in a futuristic dystopia, will likely lose between $75 million to $80 million during its theatrical run, according to three sources with knowledge of the economics of movies on this scale. A source close to the film disputes those estimates, saying the true losses are “significantly less.”
After two weeks of release, “Mickey 17” has earned $35.7 million domestically and $92.2 million worldwide. The film was projected to end its theatrical run with $175 million to $180 million worldwide — including $52 million domestically and $123 million internationally. But those estimates were recently revised down to $143 million worldwide — including $46 domestically and $97 million internationally. “Mickey 17’s” breakeven point is roughly $300 million. Warner Bros. Pictures has unveiled a first look at Paul Thomas Anderson's mysterious crime thriller One Battle After Another, which might well turn out to be one of this year's most surprising movies. The 21-second preview (video below) offers a glimpse of what's to come ahead of the official trailer that is set to release next week, and it seems that the modern take on Thomas Pynchon's 1990 novel Vineland is going to involve plenty of gunfire, as bullets fly around an all-star cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Sean Penn.

Paul Thomas Anderson is one of those filmmakers from whom you largely expect greatness – but beyond that, you never quite know what you’re getting. A sprawling tapestry of tales like Magnolia? The thunderous (and darkly comic) brooding intensity of There Will Be Blood? The intoxicating bad romance of Phantom Thread? Last time, he brought big hangout vibes to Licorice Pizza. His latest, One Battle After Another, seems to be another total pivot, going by its first teaser. This one seems to be a return to dark and dangerous territory, with Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead. Watch the teaser:
It’s just a very initial taste for now, ahead of a full trailer coming next week – but it’s mighty exciting to have Paul Thomas Anderson back in business. Between all that gunfire, talk of “what’re you gonna do about this baby?”, and a dose of screaming, our Spidey...

A major summer release for Paul Thomas Anderson’s next feature was too good to be true. Warner Bros. has now delayed the film, his Vineland-inspired action/crime/comedy One Battle After Another, from an August 8, 2025 release to a September 26, 2025 bow, a similar timeframe that Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis occupied last year.
According to The Wrap, the film will still receive an IMAX release, including select theaters with 70mm along with a special release on VistaVision, a format recently used by Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist. The shift will reportedly “give the studio more time to prepare VistaVision prints and projectors for the release.”

Just after it was being reported that Warner Bros. has shifted a bevy of projects on their release schedule, one of them being One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, a short trailer tease for the project has dropped online from the studio. Very little is shown as the trailer is said to be premiering next week, but the tone seems quite ominous with some interesting elements being displayed, and when the title card appears, the music gets unusually whimsical yet haunting.
Cameras on One Battle After Another started rolling early last year in California, with Paul Thomas Anderson directing, writing the script, and producing alongside Sara Murphy. I’ve got some cool news for movie fans today. The first teaser for ‘One Battle After Another’, with Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead, is out now, and it’s already got me hooked. Paul Thomas Anderson’s behind this crime thriller, and it’s heading to theaters on September 26. That little sneak peek has me counting the days.
The teaser gives us a quick taste of what’s coming. It’s got DiCaprio fronting a stacked cast—Sean Penn, Regina Hall, Benicio Del Toro, Alana Haim, Teyana Taylor, and Wood Harris all show up. Anderson’s directing and wrote the script, taking a modern stab at Thomas Pynchon’s ‘Vineland’. We’re talking ex-revolutionaries back together after 16 years, chasing down an old foe to save a friend’s daughter.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s mysterious film finally has a title — and a new release date. Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” which has been deemed his most “commercial” project yet, reunites him with Warner Bros. Pictures film chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, the executives who produced Anderson’s most recent film, his 2021 feature “Licorice Pizza.” De Luca also brought “Boogie Nights” to the screen during his New Line tenure.
With “One Battle After Another,” auteur Anderson is working with both new and familiar faces, the biggest of whom is Leonardo DiCaprio, who is making his PTA debut with the comedy-thriller. It’s a “Licorice Pizza” reunion for Anderson with Alana Haim and Sean Penn; the cast also includes Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Shayna McHale, Wood Harris, and “Presumed Innocent” star Chase Infiniti, who plays DiCaprio’s onscreen daughter.

Warner Bros. Pictures recently unveiled a short teaser for “One Battle After Another,” the newest film from director Paul Thomas Anderson. This marks his 10th movie and his first time working with Leonardo DiCaprio, who stars alongside a large cast. The teaser gives a quick glimpse of DiCaprio in action, with a full trailer set to drop next week. The movie hits theaters and IMAX on September 26, 2025.
The story remains a mystery, but some believe it draws from Thomas Pynchon’s novel “Vineland.” That book, set in the 1980s under Reagan, explored tensions between free-spirited people and the strict War on Drugs policies. While Warner Bros. calls the film’s setting “contemporary,” the teaser doesn’t confirm or deny these rumors.

Paul Thomas Anderson and Leonardo DiCaprio are ready to go to war.
On Thursday, Warner Bros. released the first teaser trailer for One Battle After Another, the acclaimed filmmaker and star's first-ever collaboration. According to the studio, the full trailer will arrive next week.
Little is officially known about One Battle After Another – so much so that its title wasn’t revealed until Wednesday night when it was reported the studio had shifted the project's release date from August to the fall (more on that below). However, online scuttlebutt suggests the project, Anderson’s most expensive ever, is at least inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland. That novel — set in 1984 but with flashbacks to the 1960s to contextualize the cultural clash in America during those decades — focuses on a former hippie named Zoyd Wheeler and his 14-year-old daughter as they attempt to stay ahead of a villainous federal official. Warner Bros. has dropped the first look at Paul Thomas Anderson’s next film “One Battle After Another,” with a curious teaser trailer showing Leonardo DiCaprio in action. The full trailer will be released next week, but this serves as an introduction to PTA’s 10th film and his first collaboration with DiCaprio.
Plot details are under wraps but the movie is rumored to be inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s “Vineland,” which took place in the 1980s during the Reagan administration and followed the culture clash between free spirits and the War on Drugs.
The ensemble cast for the Warner Bros. film includes Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Wood Harris, Alana Haim and Chase Infiniti.

It’s Anderson’s latest film since 2021’s critically acclaimed “Licorice Pizza” and releases in theaters on Sept. 26.

Warner Bros. seemingly has been going through damage control for the last few years. While the more notorious stories about the studio’s shake-ups come from their DC films department, David Zaslav’s reign has also included the way their streaming service alters its library and information, as well as the shockingly shortened theatrical release windows given to newly premiered films. As the company attempts to recover from the reported $100 million loss on films like Mickey 17, according to Deadline, the Water Tower studio is shuffling their schedule as a strategy to keep them in the black and out of the red.
A lot of the schedule changes were affected by the movies that the studio had already booked for IMAX theaters. Premium screens are coveted for big movie releases and Warners was careful not to lose the precious commodity. The company would also move potential tentpoles up into this...

Leonardo DiCaprio is one of Hollywood's most prominent icons, emerging from a child star to a heartthrob, and evolving into a gifted and talented actor who still commands box-office success. Following global superstardom in James Cameron's Titanic, he reinvented himself as a versatile and interesting leading man, and so far, DiCaprio has made six feature films with legendary director Martin Scorsese. Awards success followed, with DiCaprio winning numerous accolades throughout his acting career, including three Golden Globes from seventeen nominations, and a BAFTA Award.
However, despite several prominent Oscar snubs for DiCaprio, he has enjoyed success at the Academy Awards, where he has enjoyed six acting nominations; Best Supporting Actor for What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, and Best Actor for Blood Diamond, The Aviator, The Wolf of Wall Street, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and The Revenant, finally winning for The Revenant in 2016. Several major movies have suffered release date delays, including Oscar-winner and Hollywood icon Leonardo DiCaprio’s upcoming mysterious crime thriller. Sean Baker may have scooped up Oscar trophies in every filmmaker's dream categories this year, but let's not forget the iconic Alejandro G. Iñárritu won Best Director two years in a row for Birdman and then The Revenant. It's hard to believe the latter film was released 10 years ago at this point, the sole film that has earned Leonardo DiCaprio an Academy Award for Best Lead Actor. Alongside him in The Revenant was a talented ensemble that included longtime performer Lukas Haas, whose latest film, High Rollers, is now available on demand and digital. MovieWeb recently caught up with Haas while he was promoting the movie, and the actor took time to share about his experience working with Iñárritu — especially as the director's star-studded next film is taking shape.

Warner Bros. is making some major changes to its release slate ahead of its CinemaCon presentation in two weeks, as five films — including Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride!” — see shifts on the 2025 and 2026 release schedule.
“One Battle After Another,” a crime thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio, moves from an August 8 release to September 26. The film will still get its planned release on Imax screens — including select theaters with 70mm — and will now also get a special release on VistaVision, the extinct film format recently revived by the Oscar-winning drama “The Brutalist.”
Sources at Warner Bros. say the delay will give the studio more time to prepare VistaVision prints and projectors for the release. The move also situates the film in the more traditional period for awards contenders in the fall.
The film is one of several big, auteur-driven gambles for Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. is getting its ducks in a row before it presents its upcoming slate to theater owners at this year’s CinemaCon, which gets underway March 31 in Las Vegas.
Wednesday evening, the studio announced a number of high-profile changes to its release calendar, led by news that director Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s Frankenstein pic The Bride is relocating from Sept. 26, 2025, to March 6, 2026. The film stars Christian Bale opposite Jessie Buckley. The Bride has had a challenging postproduction period, according to sources, though others deny any challenges and note its post-process has nothing to do with the new date.
The studio says the movie is the sort of event film that will benefit from hitting theaters timed to the beginning of spring holidays and school breaks. This does not preclude the film from being an awards contender despite such an early release date.

Warner Bros has just made some razor-sharp release-date changes ahead of CinemaCon, ones that could potentially keep the Burbank, CA lot more toward the black this year than in the red.
In a year when there were four $100 million-plus auteur-driven movies — one of which, Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17, recently misfired — Warners Bros distribution has taken the pressure off the studios’ schedule in that regard, and even placed a potential tentpole into the year: Zach Cregger’s anticipated genre movie Weapons on August 8.
Cregger’s next movie after Barbarian was previously scheduled for MLK weekend 2026, on January 16. Robert Pattinson's new dark comedy lands on its first all-time box office chart despite a lukewarm opening weekend. Best known for playing the romantic lead in The Twilight Saga, Pattinson has made more than $1 billion at the domestic box office and over $4 billion worldwide during his career. Though recent years have seen him gravitate towards smaller, more independent projects, he remains present within the blockbuster space.
In 2022, Pattinson starred as Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves's highly rated superhero movie The Batman, which became the actor's highest-grossing domestic movie, concluding its theatrical run at $369 million domestically and $770 million globally. However, when it comes to his biggest film globally, that title goes to one of his first major roles, 2005's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, where he played doomed Hogwarts student Cedric Diggory. Since then, Pattinson's star has only risen, culminating in his most recent effort.
