John Candy was a genuine treasure, but only Canada can claim him as a national one. And fellow Canuck Ryan Reynolds would like to see him honored by putting him on the Canadian 100-dollar note.
Replying to Made in Canada’s comment that they should put John Candy on Canadian legal tender, Ryan Reynolds wrote, “This is essential. No disrespect to Sir Robert Borden, but John Candy was Way funnier.” Reynolds has a point here – Who is more deserving of being the face of Canadian currency? A prime minister with a nine-year term or Gus Polinski, Polka King of the Midwest? Coupled with the fact that you couldn’t name a single time Robert Borden made you laugh and it seems like an easy decision to us…

War films are often built around spectacle or honorability. But Oliver Stone’s Platoon rejects both. Released nearly four decades ago, the film still stands as one of the most disturbing and personal depictions of war ever put to screen. Based on his own experiences in the Vietnam War, Stone shows what happens when people are placed in extreme conditions and left to figure it out for themselves.
There’s no hero’s journey here, just a young soldier trying to survive an environment designed to break him down. Platoon doesn’t ask what war means but shows what it does. How it divides, dehumanizes and reshapes those caught inside it. And how, for some, the greatest threat isn’t the enemy, but the people standing beside them.

I’m old enough to remember when Jacques Rivette films were the domain of dark-web networks and substandard DVD rips, a conspiratorial network worthy of his cinema. It’s still a little strange seeing that April will feature a 10-film, one-short Criterion Channel program that combines of his canonized masterpieces with decidedly lesser-seens––plus Va Savoir, which I really hope is the recently unearthed four-hour cut for which there’s no substitute. Penélope Cruz is also subject of a retrospective in April, which––more than making me pine for a Rivette collab that never was––will include both Abre Los Ojos and Vanilla Sky, some Almodóvar, and another in the Channel’s ongoing let’s-add-a-Woody-Allen-movie campaign, Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Exclusive: Filmmaker Joshua Coates has secured rights to the life story of Abraham Bolden, the subject of the 2008 autobiography The Echo of Dealey Plaza. Bolden made history as the first Black U.S. Secret Service agent assigned to the White House detail, where he guarded President John F. Kennedy who had personally appointed him in 1961.
Coates has written the screenplay for the movie The Unseen Shield and will also direct the film, which is currently in pre-production with his producing partner Fetteroff Colen.
Bolden, a U.S. Secret Service agent stationed in the Chicago office, first met Kennedy while on assignment in that city. Bolden had played a key role in thwarting an assassination plot in Chicago months before JFK was tragically assassinated in Dallas. Thanks to Bolden’s investigation, Kennedy canceled a planned trip to Chicago, where he was set to address supporters of his 1960 election campaign.

With the recent release of 80,000 documents relating to the assassination of ‘John F. Kennedy’, there is renewed interest in writer/director Oliver Stone’s Oscar-winning, 1991 political thriller “JFK’, examining an investigation by New Orleans district attorney ‘Jim Garrison’, who believed there was a government conspiracy to kill the president:
Based on books “On the Trail of the Assassins” by Garrison and “Crossfire: The Plot That Killed Kennedy” by Jim Marrs…
…Stone described his take as a ‘counter-myth’ to the cover-up of the ‘Warren Commission', with the death of Kennedy as part of a government and organized crime “coup d'état’, to install ambitious ‘Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson’ as Potus.
“JFK’ was nominated for eight ‘Academy Awards’, including ‘Best Picture’, winning two for ‘Best Cinematography’ and ‘Best Film Editing’.

Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors. He has drawn attention to himself due to his action-packed roles and interest in doing his own stunts, no matter how absurd and dangerous they might get—from hanging from a flying plane, jumping a bike off a cliff, and taking a huge leap from one building to another, which even broke his foot.
Despite the dangers, he has not backed away from adding authenticity to his films. Due to this quality, he has become the symbol of great cinema. If he is acting in a movie, viewers consider it a must-watch, expecting top-tier performances and thrilling stories.
He gained a lot of fame after his role in Tony Scott’s film Top Gun (1986), and since then, he has gained a reputation for acting in action-packed movies. However, there are a lot of great underrated movies that have flown under the audience’s radar,...

Tom Cruise might be best known for his action roles in films like Top Gun and Mission Impossible, but that doesn’t mean he’s limited to high-speed chases and explosive stunts. And 36 years ago, Cruise took on a role that was as far removed from his usual persona as possible. In Born on the Fourth of July, directed by Oliver Stone, Cruise delivered a performance that would not only redefine his career but also strengthen the film's legacy as one of the greatest war films ever made.
Born on the Fourth of July is the true story of Ron Kovic’s transformation from a patriotic soldier to an anti-war activist. The film dives into the emotional costs of war, showing Kovic’s struggle with guilt, trauma, and anger after his return home. He didn't have a lead role in Gone in 60 Seconds, but Timothy Olyphant was front and center for a good portion of the movie. The action heist movie from 2000 was a loose remake of the 1974 flick of the same name and starred Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie, Giovanni Ribisi, Robert Duvall, and a diverse ensemble cast.
Cage played Randal "Memphis" Raines, a reformed car thief who gets pulled back an auto-theft ring to save his brother, Kip (Ribisi), after he was kidnapped. As Memphis returns to boosting cars, the appearances of his former love interest, Sara "Sway" Wayland (Jolie), Sphinx (Vinnie Jones), and Otto Halliwell(Duvall) as well as the Detectives Castlebeck and Drycoff (Delroy Lindo and Olyphant) both complicate and help him in his efforts.

War movies concerning the Vietnam War encompass the specific traits that make them easily distinguishable from other films within the war genre. The majority of Golden Era war movies, which heavily depicted World War II, feature propagandistic angles and hero-worshipping sentiments that reflected the nation's attitudes at the time. While World War II movies may dominate the genre, there are plenty of stunning films about the Vietnam War, from the unconventional Good Morning, Vietnam to the landmark Apocalypse Now.
Vietnam War movies are more reflective of the counter-culture era, containing anti-establishment views, addressing the psychological effects war has on soldiers, and preaching anti-war themes. Internationally, countries such as Hong Kong have produced important works about the Vietnam War that provide an added perspective toward fully understanding the implications of the conflict worldwide. Some of the best movies about the Vietnam War rank among cinema's greatest war films, and many publications...

No film so perfectly encapsulates the generation gap in America in the '60s than John Wayne's corny Vietnam War epic, The Green Berets. The genre has reached such a level of ubiquity and cliché that soon it birthed its own parody in the form of Tropic Thunder. There’s no shortage of productions exploring the political nuances and the social ramifications of the war today, but that was a different story in 1968.
Adapting the 1965 best-selling novel of the same name to theaters, it boasted John Wayne in the lead, with The Fugitive star David Janssen, Jim Hutton, and George Takei in supporting roles. The Vietnam War was a travesty in many respects. Blame US Defense Secretary Robert McNamara. For the movie, that is. Come to think of it, blame him for the war too. Reactions to the action flick were unkind. For screenwriters, journalists, and directors, it only...

There is a lot that goes into making a movie and sometimes things do not work out the way you want them to. Take Street Kings as an example. The 2008 action thriller starring Keanu Reeves and Chris Evans was in the making since the late 1990s and was even set for a 2005 release once. However, fate had different plans for the film. And while David Ayer turned out to be a good choice for Street Kings, the Suicide Squad filmmaker was not the studio’s first choice by a long shot.

In fact, his name was fourth on the list with none other than David Fincher sitting on the top. Fortunately for David Ayer, the top choice decided to go with another project leaving the door open for an array of possibilities.

Released in 1991, Oliver Stone’s political thrillerJFK turned the assassination of President John F. Kennedy into a fast-paced mystery that combined historical events with heavy speculation. With a star-studded cast, JFK asked bold questions about the official story surrounding Jkf’s death, sparking widespread debate. However, while JFK was undeniably popular, it also faced major criticism for its historical inaccuracies.
Despite these flaws, JFK remains one of the most influential films of the 1990s. It reignited interest in the assassination and gave rise to new theories about who was really behind the killing of Kennedy. Its box office success and cultural impact cannot be denied, but the question remains: was JFK a bold cinematic statement or a dangerously misleading piece of historical fiction?
What Is JFK About?
As the name suggests, JFK follows New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner) as he reopens an investigation into President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

In recent decades, American society has developed an obsession with serial killers. Reaching an apex in the early 1990s, the American media significantly contributed to turning serial killers such as Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, and John Wayne Gacy into celebrities. Currently, one of the most popular entertainment mediums is true crime television shows and documentaries, many of which revolve around serial killers. Tony Todd, prolific actor and horror icon, passed away in 2024, leaving behind an impressive filmography full of memorable roles. Beginning with his first real Hollywood role as Sergeant Warren in Oliver Stone's Oscar-winning "Platoon," Todd then began his journey towards becoming a horror legend by playing Ben in Tom Savini's "Night of the Living Dead" remake — a major milestone on his path to playing the titular "Candyman" in Bernard Rose's celebrated 1992 supernatural horror film. He'd continue his run as a staple of the horror genre after that, ultimately becoming the personification of Death in the "Final Destination" film series.

Sean Baker and Anora are continuing their run with guilds, as the movie has taken home Best Original Screenplay at the WGA Awards following huge wins with both the Directors Guild of America and Producers Guild of America. On the Adapted Screenplay front, RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes won for Nickel Boys.
But the WGA Awards are hardly the most reliable barometer for the Academy Awards. In fact, since 2010, the matching winners have pretty much always been in alternating years save for the back-to-back victories of Parasite and Promising Young Woman. Notably, however, there is only one other competitor that Anora was up against at the WGAs that is also up for Best Original Screenplay: Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain, as Challengers, Civil War and My Old Ass were benched. Instead, the Best Original Screenplay Oscar nominees contain three replacements that were ineligible for the WGAs: The Brutalist, September 5 and The Substance.

Few actors’ screen presence reverberates with such genuine intensity as Benicio del Toro. Like Gary Oldman, Denzel Washington, Toshiro Mifune, Mads Mikkelsen, and so on. I feel Benecio del Toro is almost always good, irrespective of the quality of the film built around his character. Born in Puerto Rico on February 19, 1967, to lawyer parents, Benicio del Toro was a basketball player in school. Benicio del Toro was studying business at the University of California, but his interest in acting soon made him drop out and study acting at the Stella Adler Conservatory with Arthur Mendoza. In the late 1980s, Benicio del Toro started appearing in TV shows like Miami Vice and Private Eye.

Raunchy rom-com There's Something About Mary is climbing the streaming chart, currently sitting at number six on Hulu. Starring Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz, the comedy was directed by the Farrelly Brothers (Peter and Bobby), and became a massive smash hit when it premiered in July 1998. The film went on to earn nearly $370 million at the global box office against a $23 million production budget. It currently sits at a positive 84% critical and, surprisingly, only 61% audience on Rotten Tomatoes.
Following the success of Dumb and Dumber in 1994, and, to a lesser extent, Kingpin in 1996, the Farrelly Brothers went to work on There's Something About Mary, which starred Stiller as Ted, Diaz as Mary, and Matt Dillon as Healy. Years after a disastrous high school date with his crush Mary (you have to see it to believe it), Ted gets another chance years later when his best friend Dom (Chris Elliott) suggests he find her.

Recently, President Donald Trump authorized the remaining files pertaining to the John F. Kennedy assassination to be declassified. For many people, their knowledge of the assassination comes from Oliver Stone’s 1991 courtroom thriller, JFK. However, it must be said that Stone's movie is largely fabricated and hasn't aged well, Stone whitewashing his "hero," New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison, played by Kevin Costner. The real trial was an unmitigated trainwreck.
As for those secret papers, don’t get your hopes up. Hyped at the end of the film, the sealed findings of the 1976-79 United States House Select Committee on Assassinations are bound to disappoint, at least for those who took the movie JFK to heart. The movie might be a filmmaking tour de force,...

Rodney Dangerfield’s whole act is predicated on the idea that he gets no respect, which obviously wasn’t true. Dangerfield was a beloved comedian, a successful film actor and a one-time board game star.
But Dangerfield’s comedy catchphrase became depressingly accurate during his dealings with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 1994, the Back to School star applied to become a member of the Academy, after his name was submitted by actor and friend Leonard Gaines. When others expressed surprise at the idea of making Dangerfield a member of the Academy, Gaines believed that he was “doing the Academy a favor” by inviting a huge star like Dangerfield.
As the L.A. Times pointed out at the time, Dangerfield met the criteria to join, with “major parts in at least three theatrical releases to his credit.” He also presented an award at the 1987 Oscars and killed.

Texan author Robert E. Howard (1906-1936) was a prolific writer of pulp fiction stories. In his own lifetime, his most popular stories were his Westerns. However, in the decades following his death, one of his characters in particular has come to overshadow all his other creations: Conan the Barbarian. First appearing in the pages of the iconic pulp magazine Weird Tales in 1932, Conan has gone on to become not only Howard's most popular and enduring creation, but one of the most influential characters in the Fantasy genre, period.
There are two primary reasons why Conan has remained Howard's most popular character. The first is the influence of the 1982 Conan the Barbarian movie, directed by John Milius, co-written by Milius and Oliver Stone, and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, which helped propel both Conan as a character and Schwarzenegger as an actor to new heights of popularity.

Every awards season, movie fans and aspiring pundits across the country become obsessed with the ever-coveted Academy Awards. The longstanding awards show has long been considered the holy grail of the film industry and can often feel like an all-encompassing part of the discourse, particularly around the four acting categories. In the lead-up to Oscar Sunday, many of us debate who will win, and once the ceremony comes and goes, there are still debates over who should have won.
Amidst this hubbub, it's important to remember that the Oscars are but a modicum of what represents the best performances in film. In fact, several of the best actors working today have never been given the honor of an Oscar despite years of treasured performances. The disparity between what Oscar voters love and what history remembers has always been a widening gap, but we can guarantee these 15 omissions from the winner's circle are particularly egregious.

Oftentimes, the stars perfectly align for an actor when they book a series of high-profile projects that release in a short amount of time, taking them from a relatively unknown into the next big thing in seemingly just a year. Some great recent examples include Florence Pugh in 2019, where she had Fighting with My Family in February, Midsommar in July, and Little Women in December while landing the role of Yelena Belova in Black Widow in the same year. Long before the Roys of New York or the Sopranos of New Jersey, one family dominated television: the Ewings of "Dallas." The genre-shaking soap opera aired for 14 seasons from 1978 to 1991, chronicling the dramatic, twist-filled epic saga of the Ewing Oil dynasty.
On a picturesque ranch in Dallas, Texas, the family used their money, connections, and cunning to bat away threats from outside and within. Whatever threats that rival oilman, spurned lovers, or wannabe politicians think they can pose, "Dallas" always reminds us that there's nothing stronger -- or more dangerous -- than family.
Over 30 years have passed since the final episode of the original series, and there's been well over 10 years of silence from this world following a brief revival on TNT. As such, many are curious about what happened to the cast of "Dallas," so we tracked down as much information about its massive ensemble cast as we could.

One might wonder if Netflix could just keep every film or series they have ever streamed. That sure would make it easy for the rest of us to find what we love. Still, there is licensing and bandwidth to worry about.
That means every month viewers have to try to catch shows and movies before they leave the streamer for good. Or at least for a while. Thankfully, there are not a huge number of things leaving Netflix in February, but there are ones we will miss.
Below are three films you will not want to miss. You might have seen them before, but they are worth seeing again. And if you have not seen them, one might ask, "Why not?" Well, here is your chance.

Jeffrey Wright credits his “Highest 2 Lowest” director Spike Lee for encouraging a career “high” of his own: making his directorial debut.
Wright told Men’s Health that Lee inspired him to direct his first project, which will be shot in 2026. It’s unclear whether the yet-to-be-announced project is a film or a series, but it will be Wright’s first time behind the camera regardless.
“Well, Spike would say to me, and a few other people I’ve worked with have said to me, ‘When are you going to direct?’” Wright said. “So that may be in the works. That is in the works, actually, for a project we’ll shoot in 2026. I’ll have to talk to you about that one later.”

An absurdist glimpse at workaday life within one of the very real, very strange U.S. military training grounds where role-players simulate foreign battlegrounds in order to prepare our troops for their time in the field, Hailey Gates’ “Atropia” is hardly the first American comedy set during the Iraq War, which was something of a terrible farce unto itself. Well-trodden territory as this might be, however, it’s been a long time since beloved masterpieces like “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” and Larry the Cable Guy’s “Delta Farce” first put their stamp on the sub-genre, and the years gone by have made it possible for Gates’ feature debut — expanded from her 2020 Miu Miu short, “Shako Mako” — to go further through the looking glass than even Oliver Stone’s “W.” ever could.

Oliver Stone says President Donald Trump “deserves praise” for his decision to release the last of the remaining top secret government files related to the assassination of John F. Kennedy, but also had some caveats.
The Oscar-winning director — whose 1991 film JFK is easily the best-known and most popular film ever made on the subject of Kennedy’s 1963 murder — released a statement late Friday concerning Trump’s move to order the release of the final 3 percent of the roughly 5 million investigative files related to the topic that have been held by the National Archives and Records Administration. Trump has also ordered the release of the remaining files on the subject of the assassinations of Robert F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

President Donald Trump has ordered the declassification of records pertaining to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr. The order comes after former President Joe Biden postponed the release of some additional files in 2022. The release of files began during Trump’s first presidency under the JFK Act.

Before crossing the industry standard runtime of two hours on his own films like Horizon – An American Saga, Kevin Costner clocked in a whopping three-hour-and-ten-minute runtime with the Oliver Stone directorial JFK. The controversial political thriller explored the conspiracy theories surrounding the assassination of the then-President John F. Kennedy.
While the film received polarizing reviews and was extremely controversial, the runtime seemed to be the least talked-about issue with the film. This reportedly inspired filmmaker Spike Lee to fight to keep his own ambitious political biopic Malcolm X at a longer runtime, despite WB urging him to keep it short.

The executive order gives the director of national intelligence and the attorney general, in coordination with the assistant to the president for national security affairs and the counsel to the president, 15 days to present a plan for the full release of the records. They will have 45 days to present a plan for the release of the Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. records.

Playing a traumatized nightclub singer made her a star, but to finally win over the Academy, Isabella Rossellini had to play a nosy nun.
Rossellini received her first-ever Oscar nomination on Thursday, scoring a nomination in the best supporting actress category for her role as Sister Agnes in Edward Berger’s Vatican-set thriller Conclave. Her competition includes Ariana Grande for Wicked, Monica Barbaro for A Complete Unknown, Felicity Jones for The Brutalist, and Zoe Saldaña for Emilia Pérez.
Both of Rossellini’s parents were Oscar nominees — her mother Ingrid Bergman was nominated an astounding 7 times, winning best actress 3 times, while father Roberto Rossellini received a screenwriting nom in 1950 — but it took this nepo-baby nearly 40 years to translate her overnight success into Academy acclaim.
Rossellini’s iconic role as tortured crooner Dorothy Vallens in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986) won her an Independent Spirit Award for best female lead but the...

She has been acting since 1987, and over a nearly four-decade career, Juliette Lewis is known for playing a crazed murderer (Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers), a pastor’s daughter on the run from vampires (Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk Till Dawn) and a teen fending off a violent rapist (Martin Scorsese’s Cape Fear). She’s also been a rock star in real life as the lead singer of Juliette Lewis and the Licks.
Now the 51-year-old actress is heading back to Park City to support two Sundance Film Festival selections that, even for her, are bold, head-turning roles: In art house auteur Amanda Kramer’s By Design she plays a chair — yes, a chair — and in Mark Anthony Green’s Opus she stars as a spicy journalist who joins a group to meet a pop icon at his compound when he mysteriously reappears after a three-decade absence.

It appears as if paying a huge amount of money to Cameron Diaz to lure her out of retirement has worked, as the Netflix hit Back in Action just scored the largest weekend debut for an English language movie since 2022. Diaz stars in the action comedy alongside Jamie Foxx, and was reportedly paid $45 million dollars by the streaming service to appear in two movies, making her Back in Action paycheck $22.5 million.
Per The Wrap, director Seth Gordon's first feature film since 2017's Baywatch brought in a whopping 46.8 million views during its premiere weekend, making it the biggest debut for a movie since the 2022 Ryan Reynolds sci-fi action flick The Adam Project. Second place wasn't even close, as The Secret Life of Pets 2 scored 8.9 million views, with the original film coming in third at 5.2 million views.

The title of Netflix's new film Back in Action has a kind of meta meaning. First, it features the return of Cameron Diaz to the movies after 10 years, and she is back in action for sure. It's also the return of director Seth Gordon, who hadn't released a narrative feature film since 2017's Baywatch. The title of Back in Action, starring Diaz, Jamie Foxx, Glenn Close, Kyle Chandler, Andrew Scott, and more, can also refer to the numerous times the film was halted and almost abandoned. Production was disrupted multiple times before everyone could get back in action, as Gordon told MovieWeb in a recent interview. He and his lead actor almost died, and the production had to shut down for other reasons as well. Gordon explains:
"The first month of shooting, I was supposed to get surgery. But I thought I was gonna lose Glenn, and Jamie Demetriou,...

Netflix's Back in Action brings Cameron Diaz out of a self-imposed retirement, and it reteams her with Jamie Foxx, someone she has worked with twice before joining him in their latest action comedy, which is now streaming on the platform. Diaz's last theatrical film before she took a step back from acting was a movie adaptation of the musical Annie, another film that featured her alongside Foxx, but their union goes further back than 2014.
Back in 1999, both actors found themselves in Oliver Stone's 1999 sports drama, Any Given Sunday. It was a pivotal film for both Foxx and Diaz as they were both trying to break out of more comedic roles into something more serious. The movie proved successful for the pair and likely went a long way to show audiences and other filmmakers that they could do more than make moviegoers laugh.
