If you saw Alan Alda's 1981 version of The Four Seasons, you know the film was a charming, if not overly biting, drama-comedy about three couples who go on vacations each season. The happy dynamic is broken once one of the couples splits up. One of the persons in that couple ends up bringing a much younger person along on following trips.

If you were a fan of the film, you should be excited to know that Tina Fey created an adaptation in a series format and bringing that to Netflix. The series with feature eight 30-minute long episodes. That implies Fey's adaptation will be much more of a pure comedy than a melodrama. Good.

In fact, the new trailer for the series dropped by Netflix on Thursday implies the series won't only be funny, but a little goofy, too. Great. That is honestly only likely to make the premise funnier.

Tina Fey is bringing an iconic ’80s comedy to a modern generation…with a twist.

“SNL” alum Fey co-creates, co-showruns, writes, executive produces, and stars in the upcoming series “The Four Seasons,” which is based on the 1981 feature film of the same name. “The Four Seasons” reunites Fey with her “30 Rock” collaborators Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield, who also co-create, co-showrun, write, and EP the show (Fisher additionally directs).

Fey is joined by former “SNL” cast-mate Will Forte and “Date Night” co-star Steve Carell for the series, which is a reunion within a reunion (within a reunion) for the cast. Fey and Forte play a couple who have to sniff out which of their other married pals are on the brink of divorce across four vacations.

Netflix’s star-studded series The Four Seasons is set to join the already crowded spring TV calendar.

The series, starring and co-created by Tina Fey, is set to premiere May 1. The show is an adaptation of the 1981 movie written, directed by and starring Alan Alda (who’s a producer and guest star of the new version) and centers on three couples — played by Fey and Will Forte, Steve Carell and Kerry Kinney-Silver, and Colman Domingo and Marco Calvani — who vacation together and are thrown when one of the couples announces they’re divorcing.

It's one of the biggest debates in TV right now: What’s a comedy?

While the argument rages on, there were plenty of laughs when a trio of comedy showrunners — St. Denis Medical’s Eric Ledgin, Laid’s Nahnatchka Khan, and The Four Seasons’ Lang Fisher — took the stage at SXSW’s Film and TV Music Festival for a panel titled “Funny Af Comedy Showrunners,” moderated by Gold Derby’s editor-in-chief.

“If the show is making you laugh, I guess it’s a comedy,” says Ledgin. “I don’t know that the categorization matters to me. I thought Succession was one of the funniest shows on television.”

Khan agrees that dramas can offer plenty of laughs. “Sopranos was very funny, too,” she says. “The best comedy has a lot of drama. But I do appreciate actual jokes.”

Agrees Fisher, “I wish there were more super funny, really silly shows,” she says.

The 97th Academy Awards were held on Sunday night, i.e., the Super Bowl for movie fans. That comparison might sting a little for ABC, which probably wishes it could achieve Super Bowl ratings numbers for the Oscars, especially following Hulu's glitchy livestream, which likely contributed to a decrease in viewers for the first time in four years.

According to Variety, the 2025 Oscars attracted 18.1 million viewers to watchAnora claim Best Picture of the year, down 7% from the 19.5 million people who tuned in for the 2024 ceremony. Given that ratings for the awards ceremony have seen much lower lows, this is a respectable number, but it may be a sign that some of the films, beyond box-office behemoth Wicked, weren't sampled by casual moviegoers and mostly appealed to more dedicated cinephiles.

Jules Feiffer, the provocative satirist, cartoonist, playwright and 1960s counterculturist who wrote the screenplays for Mike Nichols’ classic Carnal Knowledge and Robert Altman’s Popeye, has died. He was 95.

A Pulitzer Prize winner, Feiffer died Jan. 17 at his home in Upstate New York of congestive heart failure, his wife, Jz Holden, told The Washington Post.

The Bronx native joined such luminaries as Samuel Beckett, Sam Shepard, John Lennon and Robert Benton in contributing material to the bawdy 1969 Broadway musical revue Oh! Calcutta!, and he earned a Tony nomination for best play in 1976 for Knock, Knock. Starring Judd Hirsch, it was “a wild spree of jokes, pratfalls, word games, collapsing scenery, falling bodies and burlesque sight gags,” according to The New York Times.

Jeremy Allen White achieved a rare feat at the 2025 Golden Globes after winning the award for best performance by an actor in a television series — musical or comedy.

White was nominated alongside Adam Brody (Nobody Wants This), Ted Danson (A Man on the Inside), Steve Martin (Only Murders in the Building), Jason Segel (Shrinking) and Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building).

The Globe marked White’s third win in a row after previously being nominated and winning in the same category for the last two Globes. With the win, White joins Michael J. Fox and Alan Alda in achieving the rare feat of winning in the best actor in a television series – comedy in three consecutive years, following his wins in 2023 and 2024. Alda achieved this for four years in a row, winning for M*A*S*H between 1980-1983.

The revival of the David Mamet play, starring Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk and Bill Burr, will start previews at the theater March 10, ahead of a March 31 opening. The production is scheduled to play a strict 12-week limited run. 

The play takes over the Palace Theatre after the abrupt closure of the Tammy Faye musical on Dec. 8. Tammy Faye had been the first Broadway production to play the theater after it underwent a multiyear renovation and was raised 30-feet in the air and was meant to usher in its grand reopening. The theater boasts a seating capacity of 1,306 and has typically been used for musicals, which are seen as drawing larger crowds, rather than plays. 

The production will be directed by Patrick Marber, who won a 2023 Tony Award for his direction of Leopoldstadt. Odenkirk and Burr will make their Broadway debuts in the play.

The long-running classic sitcom "M*A*S*H" went through quite a few changes throughout its 11 seasons, both in front of the camera and behind it. A dark season four episode of Mash teased the impending exit of a major character, and could also explain why Trapper never tried to contact Hawkeye again. Mash ran for 11 seasons and season four was one of the most impactful. It arrived in the aftermath of Henry Blake's shock death in Mash season 3, while "Trapper" John actor Wayne Rogers also left between seasons. Thus, season four introduced major new characters like B.J. (Mike Farrell) and Colonel Potter (Harry Morgan), and was the first to lean on the show's emerging dramedy tone.

One of the earliest episodes, "The Late Captain Pierce", saw Alan Alda's Hawkeye being declared dead due to a clerical error, and learning his father back in America is mourning his demise. Mash's "The Late Captain Pierce" is a blackly comic outing, with B.J. and the 4077th even throwing Hawkeye a wake so they have an excuse to party.

Larry Gelbart hit it big as the showrunner of the TV show M.A.S.H. For four seasons, the writer and creator speared ahead with the dramedy before leaving it for good in 1976. M.A.S.H. has been referenced multiple times in various media and has often been cited as an inspiration for many sitcoms and comedies since its airing.

While he went on to work on several acclaimed films and stage musicals after departing from the show, he reportedly felt like he had made a good decision despite the series being at its peak. Walking away from an established gig is not always advised but the writer’s stint on the series reportedly affected him so much that there was no other option.

The series finale of M*A*S*H, "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen," stands as one of the greatest series finales of all time, and to this day reigns as the highest Nielsen rated TV episodes ever. Given the love shown for its finale, it may be surprising to you to know that the first season of M*A*S*H came perilously close to being its last, a similarity it shares with shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation. And like those shows, M*A*S*H took the lessons learned from its first season to right the ship for a second season and beyond. Larry Auerbach, a top agent at William Morris Agency for nearly 50 years who also served 25 years at USC School of Cinematic Arts, died Nov. 23 at his home in Beverly Hills. He was 95.

Auerbach represented a wide range of talent during his 47 years with William Morris, including Alan Alda, Bea Arthur, Marlo Thomas, Robert Wagner, Aaron Spelling, Sammy Davis Jr., Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, Harry Belafonte and such prestige-movie directors as Norman Jewison and Bernardo Bertolucci. Auerbach worked his way up to a leadership role at the agency after starting there in New York at age 15, working part-time while in high school sweeping floors and doing other less-than-glamorous duties during World War II.
