War films are often built around spectacle or honorability. But Oliver Stone’s Platoon rejects both. Released nearly four decades ago, the film still stands as one of the most disturbing and personal depictions of war ever put to screen. Based on his own experiences in the Vietnam War, Stone shows what happens when people are placed in extreme conditions and left to figure it out for themselves.
There’s no hero’s journey here, just a young soldier trying to survive an environment designed to break him down. Platoon doesn’t ask what war means but shows what it does. How it divides, dehumanizes and reshapes those caught inside it. And how, for some, the greatest threat isn’t the enemy, but the people standing beside them.

One of the longest (and most underrated) action movie franchises is about to enter its 12th installment. The likes of James Bond, the Fast and Furious, and more have delighted audiences for years and years with their ever-growing lore and multiple sequels, but many action fans continue to sleep on the Sniper series. Now, following the release of the 11th outing, Sniper: The Last Stand earlier this year, lead actor Chad Michael Collins has now revealed that another explosive installment in the SniperVerse is already locked and loaded.
Thanking fans for their ongoing support, Collins took to X/Twitter to make the announcement. Appearing on the set of the new Sniper movie, and looking like he’s already seen plenty of action, the actor revealed that the next chapter in the ongoing saga, which first started all the way back in 1993 with the Tom Berenger-led Sniper, is already “halfway through production.

A while back, we shared a Best Movie You Never Saw video on the action thriller Sniper, which was given a theatrical release in 1993 and spawned a direct-to-video franchise that is continuing to this day. In fact, the eleventh film in the franchise, Sniper: The Last Stand, was just given a digital release this past January – and two months later, franchise star Chad Michael Collins has taken to social media to confirm that the next sequel, which we’ll just refer to as Sniper 12 for now, is already in production!
The details – plot, director, writer, etc. – are all still under wraps. As of right now, all we know is that Sniper 12 is currently filming and Collins is back in the role of sniper Brandon Beckett and is joined in the cast by Ryan Robbins, who co-starred in the last four sequels as Agent Zero.

War dramas often fall into the same traps, focussing on emotional moments, love stories amidst chaos, and soldiers dealing with personal losses. While these elements can be powerful, they often risk overshadowing the essence of war – the strategy, battles, and the sheer brutality of it all. That’s where Gettysburg stands apart. Running over four hours, this Civil War epic doesn’t get bogged down in clichéd moments. Instead, it delves into the Battle of Gettysburg, portraying every strategic move and life-altering decision in detail.
Adapted from Michael Shaara’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Killer Angels, Gettysburg doesn’t waste time on subplots or romantic distractions. What it does offer is an authentic portrayal of one of the bloodiest conflicts in American history, bringing to life the soldiers and generals that changed the course of the Civil War. In a genre often known for its melodrama, Gettysburg boldly stands as an exception.

In hindsight, it's impossible to imagine anyone but Mark Harmon in the role of gruff "NCIS" boss Leroy Jethro Gibbs. It wasn't exactly a career-reigniting role for the actor, who had already built a legacy on shows like "St. Elsewhere" and "Chicago Hope" before joining the CBS military police procedural's inaugural 2003 season. However, it soon became apparent that Gibbs would be his defining role. Harmon embodied the character in a way that made him the unquestionable centerpiece of the ensemble cast throughout his 19 seasons with the show. He left "NCIS" in 2021, but Gibbs perseveres: In 2024, CBS rolled out the prequel show "NCIS: Origins," with Austin Stowell playing young Gibbs while Harmon narrates, "Young Sheldon"-style.
Knowing Harmon's importance to the "NCIS" franchise, it may be surprising to find out that the people behind the show didn't call his agent the second they conceived the character of Gibbs. In 2023, the makers...

When it comes to bringing the Western genre to television, perhaps the most consistent medium for success is the miniseries. These productions often contain visuals and performers of feature film-level quality, with a story and length that surpass them. A miniseries allows a story to develop over an extended (albeit still limited) time frame but without the long-term commitment of standard television. Western miniseries are great explorations of the scope and scale of the genre and can offer a distinct outlook on historical events. As such, the Hallmark Channel miniseries, Johnson County War, retold the infamous titular Wyoming conflict back in 2002, with a stellar cast that included Tom Berenger, Burt Reynolds, and Luke Perry. While this two-part event has largely fallen out of the public eye, it's one worth revisiting for a few reasons...

In a pivotal scene from Dario Argento's thriller, The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, Sam Dalmas is helpless as he stands behind a glass door, watching a victim writhing in agony from what appears to have been an attempted murder. The aspect of voyeurism is closely tied to the thriller, especially in classics such as Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window. Sliver, released in 1993 during the short-lived run of erotic thrillers that found varying levels of success following Basic Instinct, encompassed themes of voyeurism and obsession that have always been prominent in the genre.
Dismissed by many critics at the time of its release, Sliver is one of many erotic thrillers that deserves far more praise than ridicule. Some who had seen Sharon Stone's performance as femme fatale Catherine Tramell in Basic Instinct were taken aback by what some described as a more "passive" role. While Stone's portrayal of...

When David S. Ward's "Major League" slid into multiplexes on April 7, 1989, a lot of people wrote it off as a pro baseball clone of the minor-league-set "Bull Durham." A wise veteran catcher (Tom Berenger) with bad knees looking down the barrel of a forced retirement? Check. A screwy rookie pitcher (Charlie Sheen) with a flamethrower for an arm and no semblance of control? Check. A superstitious slugger (Dennis Haysbert) who demands to sacrifice a live chicken to get him out of a hitting slump? Check.
The very existence of these familiar elements was enough for many of the nation's critics to dismiss "Major League" as a meatheaded comedy. Moviegoers did not concur. The film grossed $50 million in the U.S. on an $11 million budget, and earned an A- CinemaScore before turning into a home video/pay cable sensation. The upcoming Sniper: The Last Stand is the eleventh(!) entry in the series, and I am weirdly excited about it. So, a quick history lesson on the Sniper movie franchise. It began with the original film in 1993, where Tom Berenger played a veteran sniper taking Billy Zane's rookie under his wing for an assassination mission. Sniper is the kind of film you would catch late at night and half remember in the years ahead, but when Sniper 2 arrived nearly a decade later, it kicked off a seemingly unstoppable cult saga.
Berenger's Beckett was the lead for the first two sequels before handing the keys over to Chad Michael Collins as Brandon Beckett, the estranged son of Berenger's character. I'm proud to say I've been with the series the whole way through, with the seventh entry - which finally united Berenger, Collins and Zane - feeling like the Avengers: Endgame of the Sniper series.

NCIS has long raged as one of the most praiseworthy crime dramas of all time, and one of the major reasons behind its success besides its outstanding plotlines is the star-studded cast the show sported. Throughout the time it has been on air, the series cast the most perfect actors in the most accurate roles, with Mark Harmon leading it as Leroy Jethro Gibbs for almost two decades.
NCIS. | Credits: CBS.
That said, Harmon’s casting, for one, continues to sit finely with fans worldwide, even after almost half a decade since the actor’s departure from the show in 2021. But the surprising part is that showrunner Don Bellisario wasn’t 100 percent on board from the start for casting Harmon as Gibbs, even though even the casting director had her eyes on the actor right from the start.

I'm doing this for nostalgia's sake, cause over thirty years I watched the very first Sniper movie with Tom Berenger and Billy Zane and was completely in love with it. I've since lost track of the franchise so color me surprised when approached to share with you a trailer for an eleventh film in the series, Sniper: The Last Stand. Eleventh!!! Yellowstone fans are still divided about the show’s finale, and whether Kevin Costner ought to have been around until the very end. Behind-the-scenes disputes were to blame as the actor wanted to be granted ample time to finish filming Horizon: An American Saga, but Taylor Sheridan and his team wouldn’t stop everything for him. So, how does the actor feel about how things turned out? When The Daily Mail asked him about it, he gave a straightforward answer.

Hollywood is full of war movies filled with the gallantry and fiery combat viewers have come to expect with the genre across numerous conflicts throughout history. However, not as many of these films are based on true stories as one might expect, instead taking a historical battle and fabricating a story around it. Whenever a war movie has a real-world basis inspiring it, there is a greater emotional weight in knowing that some version of these events were experienced by actual people. That isn't to say that every war movie based on true stories is necessarily historically accurate, but the heightened verisimilitude still elevates the narrative.
Beyond direct adaptations of historical events and accounts, there are also many war movies inspired by anecdotes from incidents in actual armed conflicts. Though the stories derived from these experiences are largely fictional, there's enough of a real-world basis that grounds the movies in history and genuine emotion.

The Haunting of Hill House features an ensemble cast of many talented actors, and two of the stars surprisingly worked together eight years before Mike Flanagan's hit horror miniseries. Netflix's 2018 supernatural drama TV show is loosely based on Shirley Jackson's 1959 book of the same name. It follows the Crain family, who lived in the haunted Hill House in the 1990s, and their supernatural encounters both in the past and present. Of course, that description only brushes the surface of what The Haunting of Hill House is about, as its complexity and fascinating storytelling are why it was so successful.
Mike Flanagan has said that The Haunting "chapter of [his] life is closed," per Bluesky. As of the writing of this article, the horror filmmaker is working on a new series for Amazon Prime Video, the next Exorcist film, and an adaption of Stephen King's Carrie.

An intrinsic part of popular culture, war movies have featured some of the biggest stars in Hollywood since the earliest days of cinema. From emotionally impactful war movies that stick with the viewer forever to offerings that feature the most horrific depictions of war imaginable, the genre has played host to some of the silver screen's most celebrated and instantly recognizable faces, from Laurence Olivier to Idris Elba. Thankfully, this is a status quo that shows no sign of letting up any time soon.
From the best war films of all time to more recent genre offerings, war movies have a habit of flashing an A-lister when audiences least expect it. These roles can even precede the individual in question hitting the big time, leading to a delightful sense of realization when the sense of recognition eventually hits home. In others, it can be a well known individual who is...

Mark Harmon played the role of Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs to perfection in the Jag spin-off series. The actor portrayed the role for 19 seasons, establishing himself as a central part of the show.
However, what most NCIS fans don’t know is that there were several other actors who the creators were considering for that role. Notable names like Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin, Clive Owen, and even Charlie Sheen were contemplated for the character. Harmon too initially wanted to reject the role until one thing made him accept the offer.

“Nightingale,” an action thriller set against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, has pulled the curtain back on its ensemble, casting “Special Ops: Lioness” and “1883” star Lamonica Garrett to lead the picture. Jason Patric, Andrew Howard and Daniel Bernhardt are also starring.
The picture comes from producers Isaac Lewis and Andrew Lewis of Denton Film. Low-budget staple William Kaufman is directing the feature, which recently wrapped principal photography in Bulgaria. Kaufman co-write the script with Paul Reichelt, who also serves as executive producer.
Garrett is best known for his roles on “Sons of Anarchy” and “Designated Survivor.” He stars in “Nightingale” as an American Special Forces Operator and private military contractor, who must balance tending to civilian lives while rescuing his adoptive daughter, who is kidnapped and taken hostage by Russian forces in Ukraine. Patric plays a CIA handler with a shared history with Garrett’s character.

Could you imagine someone other than Mark Harmon playing Leroy Jethro Gibbs on the NCIS cast?
No, we aren’t talking about the Young Gibbs we have seen in flashbacks and on NCIS: Origins. We are talking about someone else nabbing the role on NCIS before Harmon got it.
Harmon starred as Gibbs on NCIS from 2003 until 2021. He left the show early in Season 19, and Gibbs was retired to Alaska.
Harmon also appears on NCIS: Origins, serving as the narrator and appearing in scenes where Gibbs writes a memorial about his exploits.
Actor Austin Stowell now plays the Young Gibbs on NCIS: Origin, taking the mantle from Sean Harmon, who had played Young Gibbs in NCIS flashbacks.
NCIS fans continue hoping that Gibbs (played by Harmon) will have a reason to resurface on the primary show in the future.
Who else could have played Gibbs on NCIS?

The French Film Academy will honor legendary political filmmaker Costa-Gavras with its lifetime achievement award at the upcoming 2025 César Awards.
The 91-year-old auteur, born in Greece before fleeing to exile in Paris, is best known for his politically-charged cinema, including Oscar winners Z (1969) — a thinly fictionalized account of the assassination of democratic Greek politician Grigoris Lambrakis in 1963 that led to the country’s long military dictatorship — and English-language feature Missing (1982), about the disappearance of an American journalist in the aftermath of the United States-backed Chilean coup of 1973.
Z was the first film to be nominated both for best picture and best international feature at the Academy Awards, winning the latter, as well as the Oscar for best film editing for Françoise Bonnot. Missing, starring Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek, won the Palme d’Or in Cannes and was nominated for four Oscars, winning for best adapted screenplay.

One scene in Inception leaves VFX artists floored 14 years after its release. Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, his 2010 sci-fi film follows a professional thief who extracts information from targets' minds using dream-sharing technology, and is tasked with the seemingly impossible mission of implanting an idea into a target's subconscious. Inception's cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Elliot Page, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, Dileep Rao, and Michael Caine.
In the latest episode of Corridor Crew's "VFX Artists React" series, hosts Sam Gorski, Wren Weichman, and Jordan Allen were floored by one scene in Inception. Watch the portion of the video below:
The VFX artists reacted to the mirror scene in Inception, and host Jordan Allen broke down how they used practical mirrors on set, including a behind-the-scenes photo that shows how the scene was created. Read a portion of his comments below:

Watching the Sniper movies in order is tough since the franchise has surprisingly reached 10 movies. Sniper was released in the early '90s and paired Platoon's Tom Berenger with Billy Zane. It saw Berenger's veteran sniper Beckett showing the ropes to Zane's rookie, who is terrified of making his first kill. The film received negative reviews but over time, it became a cult hit. The original is unique in that it's largely a psychological thriller all about waiting for the perfect shot - as opposed to most action movies that focus on constant gunfire and explosions.
The Sniper movie franchise has proven shockingly robust, having run for 30 years and counting. Berenger stepped back as the lead following the third movie, with Chad Michael Collins later picking up the scope as Beckett's estranged son Brandon. The series has veered from the serious tone of the first film to the borderline...

If there's one thing we know about the alien known only as The Thing, it's that it can appear as just about any living being that it wants to. In that spirit, it's no big surprise that the role of R.J. MacReady, the resident helicopter pilot of Outpost 31, was one that could've gone to any number of actors when director John Carpenter was developing "The Thing" at Universal Pictures in the early '80s. On the other hand, this fact may come as a surprise to those who hadn't realized other actors were in the running for the part, given that the role eventually went to one of Carpenter's muses: Kurt Russell. The marriage of Russell, Carpenter, and MacReady seems so natural in hindsight that it's wild to think about anyone else playing the part.
Even more surprising is Carpenter's admission that Russell wasn't his first choice for MacReady. There...

Two and a Half Men definitely raised his star value, but Charlie Sheen was already a big name in the acting business with several well-acclaimed projects under his belt. One such project was Platoon, which also starred Johnny Depp and was released in 1986. The concept of the movie itself was quite challenging, given that it was a war flick.

David Cronenberg's influence has shaped the modern horror landscape, blending metaphysical and physical elements for provocative storytelling. Cronenberg's impact on body horror is evident in films like American Mary, Slither, and Kuso, pushing boundaries with grotesque transformations. Newer films like Censor and Possessor continue Cronenberg's legacy, exploring themes of anatomy, self-transformation, and the blurred lines between reality and fiction.
The modern horror landscape wouldnt look the same without the influence of body horror maestro David Cronenberg. Since his debut, Shivers, a sticky satire about an apartment complex infected with an erotic virus clearly meant to critique the sexual revolution, his work has provoked by combining metaphysical with the very-physical on screen, plumbing the depths of the human animals urges by testing its boundaries, usually proving them much too porous for comfort, from The Fly to The Brood, to Videodrome.
The once-polarizing Cronenberg has become an elder statesman in horror over the years.

One of Denzel Washington's most iconic movies, which won him his second Oscar of his career, has found streaming life more than 20 years after release. Training Day, the 2001 cop drama which also stars Ethan Hawke, is officially one of the most popular movies on Paramount+, narrowly creeping into the top 10. Training Day falls just short of Mean Girls, which has been enjoying success on Paramount+ for the better part of a week now, and also A Quiet Place Part 2, the sequel starring Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy. In addition to Washington and Hawke, Training Day also stars Scott Glenn, Tom Berenger, Harris Yulin, and Raymond J. Barry, and the film currently sits at a 74% score from critics and an 89% rating from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Charles Cyphers dies at the age of 85. The actor is undoubtedly best-known by fans of John Carpenters classic slasher flick, Halloween (1978), as the venerable Sheriff Leigh Bracket, starring along with Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis. Brackett helps Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasence) hunt for the Shape, aka Michael Myers (Nick Castle), the night the serial killer came home over 45 years ago. Cyphers manager, Chris Roe, revealed that the Halloween actor and Hollywood stalwart passed away after battling a brief illness (per Variety). Roe said:
Charles was a lovable and sensitive man. He always had the best stories, and you got a full performance while he told you. He was a close friend and client of many years who will be dearly missed.

A few months ago, I wrote an article listing ten movies that – despite being well known – were difficult to find (legally) on any streaming service or even on disc. Those titles ranged from Ron Howard’s Cocoon to movies like Dawn of the Dead (the original). In the comments, many of our readers chimed in with their two cents on films they’ve found difficult to find over the years, so here are a few more challenging-to-find flicks, some of which may surprise you.
Panic Room:
The fact that David Fincher’s Panic Room has never been issued on Blu-ray blows me away. It’s been announced a few times, but a physical release never seems to happen (although you can stream it in HD pretty easily). What gives? You’d think the fact that it has Fincher’s name on it, and stars Jodie Foster, Kristen Stewart, Forest Whitaker,...

In previous episodes of The Best Movie You Never Saw, I’ve talked a little bit about how much I like the eighties and nineties actor Tom Berenger. From Platoon through Shoot to Kill and The Substitute, he was a great character actor with some serious action chops. Were he to have come along in another era, he could have easily been an action star in the vein of Liam Neeson or Gerard Butler, but in his heyday, audiences seemed to prefer larger-than-life heroes. Yet, some of his movies proved to be modestly successful, and one of the more intruding examples is the 1993 movie Sniper, which is probably the best movie you ever saw that got nine sequels.
In it, Berenger plays Master Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Beckett, a legendary sniper with many confirmed kills under his belt. His work nowadays is embroiled in the war on drugs, with him having...
