Note: This review was originally published as part of our TIFF 2024 coverage. The Assessment will be released in theaters on March 21 from Magnolia Pictures.
The “old world” is a wasteland. People still live there, but not for very long. Those in the “new world” live hundreds of years thanks to a drug that slows aging. It’s groundbreaking technology that comes at a price: the combination of scarce real estate on which to live safely and figurative immortality means less to go around for a populace that never decreases. The compromise was thus to take China’s now-defunct “one-child policy” to the nth degree and render the conception of all children illegal. Unless you’re granted a waiver by the government, but that permission is understandably not easily won. You must prove yourselves worthy as a couple via a seven-day evaluation.
This is the sci-fi backdrop to Fleur Fortune’s The Assessment.

Fleur Fortuné’s near-future-set feature-length directorial debut, The Assessment, prods at current-day anxieties around having children amid a recrudescence of fascism and dress rehearsals for the climate apocalypse. Even as these two forces refuse to recognize each other’s authority, they skip into the future hand in hand.
Owing to their wealth and obedience, Mia (Elizabeth Olsen) and Aaryan (Himesh Patel) live in a coastal modernist villa, insulated from the largely off-screen ravages of a dystopian climate apocalypse by an atmosphere-controlled forcefield. Mia cultivates gourmet algae in a greenhouse of her own design, where she also keeps an orchid that’s all she has left of her mother, who was exiled to the “Old World” for political dissidence. Aaryan is a programmer who, in a nod to Philip K. Dick, designs artificial pets to replace those lost in the “pet cull.”

Friends fans span generations. Thanks to the series' arrival on streaming, a whole new generation of young people are discovering NBC's must-see Thursday night comedy turned cultural touchstone. But that also means there are a whole host of fans who probably had no idea — or at least have never seen — that a Joey Tribbiani-centric spinoff called Joey actually happened. Well, for those younger fans, the chance to check out the short-lived series that barely was is now.
The Matt LeBlanc-starring series, which saw Joey reunited with his sister and nephew, only aired for two seasons before being canceled by NBC. Roger Ebert was the film critic of the Chicago Sun-Times from 1967 all the way until his death in 2013. He was so well known for his work that in 1975, he won the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism. Ebert had many followers who adored his film reviews and hung on his word like gospel. Even now, his reviews are seen as highly accurate and very insightful. Although anime films weren't his primary selection for watching, he did write some words on different anime works. In an article about Japanese anime movies, Roger Ebert claims,
"To watch these titles is to understand that animation is not an art form limited to cute little animals and dancing teacups. It releases the imagination so fully that it can enhance any story, and it can show sights that cannot possibly exist in the real world.

Edward Burns isn't just that handsome lad who co-starred in classic films like Saving Private Ryan (1998) and The Holiday (2006). The New York native has also stepped behind the lens to write and direct a number of acclaimed indie films over the years, with the latest turning out to be a bit of a star-studded affair thanks to big names like Patrick Wilson, Benjamin Bratt, Gretchen Mol, Minnie Driver, Morena Baccarin, and Julianna Margulies gracing the screen.

Miramax Films’ musical fantasy comedy Ella Enchanted will officially be heading to a brand-new streaming home soon. The 2004 movie was led by Academy Award-winner Anne Hathaway in one of her earliest movie roles, following the success of 2001’s The Princess Diaries.
Beginning on March 6, Ella Enchanted will be available for streaming on Prime Video. In the film, Hathaway portrayed the titular role of Ella, a young woman whose fairy godmother granted her the magical gift of obedience. This ability requires her to immediately obey any command she has been given. However, as she grows up, this so-called gift proves to be more of a curse than a blessing, since it gives anyone the power to take advantage of her. During its theatrical run, it received negative reviews from critics and fans of the novel, with a Tomatometer rating of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes. This was due to its lack of faithfulness from the original source material.

Elizabeth Olsen doesn’t appreciate Alicia Vikander meddling in her plan to start a family in the trailer for the sci-fi feature The Assessment.
Director Fleur Fortuné’s movie hits theaters March 21 from Magnolia Pictures after premiering at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Rounding out the cast are Himesh Patel, Minnie Driver, Indira Varma, Charlotte Ritchie, Nicholas Pinnock, Leah Harvey and Anaya Thorley.
Set in the near future where parenthood is heavily controlled, The Assessment centers on a couple played by Olsen and Patel, whose relationship is examined over a seven-day period by an assessor (Vikander) ahead of their pregnancy plan.
“Over the next seven days, you’ll undergo close observation and formal testing to ascertain suitability for parenting,” Vikander tells the couple in the trailer. “I want to get to know the real you.”
Later, a frustrated Olsen exclaims to Patel, “I want a real child — not this.

It seems a bit premature, but we wanted to have a place where we could begin tracking upcoming Netflix Originals expected to be hitting our screens in 2026. This is an extension to our 2025 movie and TV schedule, which we’ll continue to keep updated throughout 2025.
Important note: Given how far out we are from 2026, everything on this list is highly subject to change. We’ll keep it updated throughout 2025 and into 2026 with the latest confirmations of releases. As of right now, for most titles listed below, we’ve made assumptions based on filming schedules and/or if they’ve been excluded from the 2025 schedule. Of course, Netflix’s development slate is certainly much bigger than what this list implies, with likely well over 1,000 projects that have been announced or titles being worked on behind the scenes, although many will not see the light of day.

"I need to assess all aspects of your relationship." Magnolia Pictures has unveiled the first official trailer for The Assessment, an entrancing intellectual sci-fi film that marks the feature debut of superbly talented filmmaker Fleur Fortune. This originally premiered at TIFF 2024 last year, and it also played at the London, Stockholm, and Sitges Film Festivals in the fall. It's opening in theaters in March. Set in a near future when parenthood is strictly controlled, a couple's seven-day assessment for the right to have a child unravels into a psychological nightmare. The movie stars Elizabeth Olsen and Himesh Patel as a couple living in the near future, a climate ravaged Earth where parenting is controlled and approved by the government. They request to have a child and then Alicia Vikander shows up as their "assessor", putting them through this exceptionally fascinating and disturbing seven day trial. Magnolia Pictures has released the official trailer for The Assessment, the upcoming thriller directed by Fleur Fortuné. The film will open in theaters on March 21.
Rated R by the Motion Picture Association (MPA), The Assessment premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2024.
In a not-so-distant future, where resources are scarce and tightly controlled, even the dream of having a child is not a given. A baby is no longer a decision—it’s a privilege. Couples who want to be parents must pass a shadowy and mysterious test to prove they’re worthy.
Children, in this world, are a double-edged sword—a heavy responsibility, but also a rare luxury that only the most “deserving” can experience. Mia (Elizabeth Olsen) and Aaryan (Himesh Patel) are one of the few couples allowed to take the test, having successfully navigated a brutal selection process.

One of our most-anticipated films to premiere at TIFF last fall, The Assessment marked the directorial debut of Fleur Fortuné, who had previously helmed music videos for M83, The Avalanches, Lykke Li, Travis Scott, and more. The sci-fi drama, starring Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Olsen, Himesh Patel, Minnie Driver, Indira Varma, Nicholas Pinnock, Charlotte Ritchie, and Leah Harvey, was picked up by Magnolia Pictures, who have now debuted the first trailer ahead of a March 21 release.
Here’s the synopsis: “The Assessment follows Mia (Olsen) and Aaryan (Patel), a successful couple who hope to become parents in a near future where resources are extremely limited and the government keeps firm control over reproduction. They are assigned an assessor named Virginia (Vikander), who moves into their home for seven days to evaluate whether they deserve to move forward in their parenting journey. What if aspiring parents had to be approved to have children?
Fleur Fortuné’s directorial debut “The Assessment” paints a picture of a dystopian future where couples have to be deemed worthy of bearing children. Alicia Vikander stars as the deciding factor in this equation; Elizabeth Olsen and Himesh Patel are the maybe parents to be.
The official synopsis reads: “Mia (Olsen) and Aaryan (Patel) are a successful couple who hope to become parents in a near future where resources are extremely limited and the government keeps firm control over reproduction. They are assigned an assessor named Virginia (Vikander), who moves into their home for seven days to evaluate whether they deserve to move forward in their parenting journey. What Mia and Aaryan are hoping is a routine test quickly unravels into a psychological nightmare, forcing them to question the very foundations of their society and what it truly means to be human.

The Beekeeper 2 with Jason Statham is in the works at Miramax. Unfortunately, one member of the original movie's creative team will not be returning (at least in the same role) for the action sequel.
According to Deadline, David Ayer will not be returning as director for The Beekeeper 2, with Nobody 2 helmer Timo Tjahjanto tapped as his replacement. Ayer is currently busy filming the Brad Pitt-led movie The Heart of the Beast for Paramount. However, Miramax is hoping that Ayer will join the sequel in a producing capacity. Kurt Wimmer returned to write the screenplay for The Beekeeper 2, which is slated to begin production this fall. Amazon MGM Studios is expected to secure the sequel's domestic rights. The company previously handled distribution on the 2024 original.

Beloved director of such iconic films as Grosse Pointe Blank and Miami Blues, George Armitage, has died at 82. A popular director in the '90s and Roger Corman protégé, known for his dark comedies, he also helmed the 1972 Blaxploitation film called Hit Man. The news was confirmed by his son, the writer-producer Brent Armitage.
Born and briefly raised in Hartford, Connecticut, Armitage's family moved to Los Angeles in the 1950s. His first job in the industry was in the mail room at 20th Century Fox, which led to him getting into production on television shows. He worked as an associate producer on the soap opera Peyton Place starting in 1967, and leveraged that experience to get in with the folks at Roger Corman's New World Pictures. Corman was a revolutionary in the industry, creating an entire ecosystem of micro-budget films that gave many Hollywood mega-talents their start.

Image Source: Paramount Pictures The 1998 action movie Hard Rain seemed destined for success on paper. With an all-star lineup including Christian Slater, Morgan Freeman, Minnie Driver, Ed Asner, and the legendary Betty White, it had serious star power. The story takes place in a small Indiana town during a record-breaking storm, where a nephew and his uncle, both armored truck drivers, must fend off a gang of thieves trying to steal $3 million—all while battling the deadly chaos of a catastrophic flood. Drama, danger, and betrayal are all on the menu. With its flashy special effects and stellar cast, this movie had all the makings of a box-office hit. But when Hard Rain hit theaters, it made more of a splash than a wave. From a hefty $70 million budget, it only raked in $19.9 million, failing to capture the hearts (or wallets) of critics and audiences alike. Critics weren’t exactly kind either,...

George Armitage, the director of Grosse Pointe Blank and Miami Blues, as well as a close collaborator of Roger Corman’s, has died. He was 82.
George Armitage entered the business in the ‘70s but it took a while to find his footing. That came with 1990’s Miami Blues, which starred Alec Baldwin as a criminal fresh out of prison posing as a cop with a stolen police badge. Armitage would develop his mixture of crime and comedy later that decade with 1997’s Grosse Pointe Blank with John Cusack and Minnie Driver.
Even though he was a buddy of Corman’s, it does feel like George Armitage is too rarely mentioned in the list of notable directors who got their start working under him. But we can’t ignore where he got his start. George Armitage met Roger Corman at just the right time in the 1960s. In 1971, Corman hired him to write Gas-s-s,...

George Armitage, director of 90s indie hits Grosse Pointe Blank and Miami Blues, as well as Hit Man, the 70s blaxploitation remake of Get Carter, has died aged 82. Variety reported he died on 15 February in Playa del Rey in California.
Armitage started out in TV, working on the celebrated TV soap opera Peyton Place, then broke into features via Roger Corman’s micro-budget studio New World in the late 1960s. Thirty years ago, writer and director Edward Burns’ “The Brothers McMullen” was one of several films — alongside Cameron Crowe‘s “Singles,” Ben Stiller’s “Reality Bites,” and Nicole Holofcener‘s “Walking and Talking,” among many others — that spoke directly to the emotional issues and social anxieties of Generation X. After Burns, now in his fifties, became an empty nester and started to think about how that changed his identity and his marriage — and those of his friends in the same age group — he realized there was fertile ground for a new drama that would address this new stage of life for Generation X-ers the way that “McMullen” had represented the 1990s.
“There were a lot of conversations in my group of friends asking, ‘What does tomorrow look like now that you don’t define yourself as a parent and you’re not actively parenting anymore?,” Burns told IndieWire. “How do you define the marriage?...

Thirty years ago, Edward Burns won the coveted Grand Jury prize for his low-budget indie feature The Brothers McMullen at Sundance. The charming actor and filmmaker would go on to co-star in Steven Spielberg's masterpiece Saving Private Ryan, guest-star in shows like HBO's infamous Entourage (where the guys called him "Eddie"), and continue to shoot his own independent films throughout the years. His latest is Millers in Marriage, which, with its New York-set subject matter, might even bring you back to that acclaimed project that put Burns on the map three decades ago. If you haven't seen The Brothers McMullen, that's A-ok — and might even work in Burns' favor.

Disney couples are emblematic of the love we aspire to procure. With pairs like Nala and Simba, Eugene and Rapunzel and Tiana and Naveen, it's easy to get lost in an idealistic vision of love. However, not all Disney couples are held in the same regard. Viewers have reexamined many only to reveal problematic undertones of power imbalances and manipulation.
Of course, relationships come in all forms and not all of them can be exceptional representations, but even some of Disney's most notable films display depictions of love that should do anything but set an example for audiences. With so many growing up on Disney's classics, conceptions of romance can be twisted and lead to a devastating trajectory in one's love life. Rather than being swept up in the generalization that Disney has love down to a science, here are some examples that ask viewers to take a second look.

As strange as it is, moviegoers are fascinated by the assassin. Paid handsomely for their skills of stealth, marksmanship, martial arts, and general wanton violence, these contract killers have been the focus of some of the most thrilling and emotionally provocative films ever made.
Maybe it's because many of these hit-people share many viewers' relationship to their own work -- a disdain for the spiritually emptying but financially necessary professions that command much of their life. Maybe it's because a criminal mastermind of this nature -- so devoid of humanity that they reduce human lives to zeros in a bank account -- reveals more about the world around them than any other character type.
Or maybe it's because we just like watching people fight with guns and swords. In any case, we've put together our own hit-list of flicks featuring them, ranked based on their quality, legacy, and depiction of these captivating killers.

Disney is a huge movie studio responsible for countless beloved films over the last century. For the most part, Disney's animated films are wholesome entertainment with messages of friendship and harmony. However, some scenes in certain movies have sparked controversy.
Even though the studio is known for being family-friendly, Disney has offered movie moments that are offensive to some audiences. This was more common during the studio's earlier years, like in Song of the South, Dumbo, and Fantasia. However, a few examples persist even in relatively recent films, including Tarzan. Some of these controversial Disney scenes are more shocking than others, but no matter what, all of them seem strangely out of place when revisiting their respective movies.

Exclusive: Aurora Perrineau (Prodigal Son) has been tapped for an undisclosed role in Angels in the Asylum, an upcoming indie drama marking the feature debut of writer-director Rob Sorrenti.
Perrineau joins an ensemble which also includes Katherine Waterston, Simon Pegg, Minnie Driver, Cush Jumbo, Rose Williams and Miriam Margolyes, as previously announced.
Inspired by a BBC Newsnight exposé, the film tells the untold story of 50 women who were forcibly confined in isolation at Surrey’s Long Grove Asylum. Beginning in 1907, these women — deemed typhoid carriers — were imprisoned in the former psychiatric hospital, their lives shaped by fear, stigma, and medical injustice. Pic explores their struggle for freedom and dignity in the face of a system that saw them as threats rather than individuals, shedding light on a dark chapter in medical history.
Heather Greenwood, Marie-Elena Dyche and Charlotte Carey are producing the pic, currently shooting in the UK, with Parkland Pictures handling sales.

Stars: Jason Statham, Phylicia Rashad, Josh Hutcherson, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Jemma Redgrave, Minnie Driver, Jeremy Irons | Written by Kurt Wimmer | Directed by David Ayer
Discounting the Fast and the Furious franchise, I really enjoy Jason Statham’s films. He has an incredible talent for playing the most ridiculous situations straight, with his deadpan, growling voice. The mix of him being serious plus utterly silly situations makes for extremely fun films (albeit The Meg was a disappointment).
He is also brilliant at the physical aspect of the films. I am sure he has stuntmen, but along with Keanu Reeves, he is one of my favourite action stars working today. He has cornered a market, that other actors might turn their nose up at, or most likely you would get the impression they were “in on the joke”. Statham does not do this, and it is to his great credit.
Surely Statham would...
