Comedy legend Colin Quinn once thought that stand-up would be his stepping stone to movie stardom, but Hollywood ripped that dream away from him faster than Patrick Swayze tore out that guy’s throat.
The concept of “paying your dues” in Hollywood is one that most every up-and-comer understands. With an exceedingly select few non-nepo-baby exceptions, nobody lands that great, meaty, big-break-worthy leading role on their first attempt at breaking into the entertainment industry, and successful actors need to work their way up to the big time with some foot-in-the-door performances. For an aspiring star with a sense of humor, becoming a touring stand-up comedian is an effective avenue toward acting gigs, but Quinn, who has been down that road before, warns that the final destination may not be worth it after all.

Gus Van Sant’s Drugstore Cowboy is a road movie on opioids. Its characters are nomadic drug addicts who roam the Pacific Northwest in search of pharmacies and hospitals to raid, but the thrill they get from thieving is as fleeting and mocking as the highs they get from speed and other drugs.
The leader of this pack is Bob Hughes (Matt Dillon), who’s developed a kind of gambler’s intuition about their robberies. When he feels “hot,” he’ll hit a location at the drop of a hat, no matter the time of day. But when he senses the group’s luck turning south, he’ll hole up in their dilapidated house and face withdrawal rather than risk capture. Classic Patrick Swayze action movie Road House is kicking butt in the Tubi Top 10. While the film recently received the obligatory remake, with Jake Gyllenhaal stepping into the role previously occupied by the beloved actor, the 1989 original is proving that despite its harsh reviews from critics, the masculine movie can still draw in an audience.
This cult favorite is directed by Rowdy Herrington, and saw Swayze at his charismatic best as bouncer James Dalton, who takes his job at the refurbished Double Deuce roadside bar seriously enough to expand his reach to protecting the small town of Jasper, Missouri against the corrupt businessman Frank Tilghman. With plenty of brutal brawls, sub-plots of redemption, and Swayze’s swagger at an all-time high, the film has continued to be a presence in pop culture for decades - even becoming a running joke in Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy. Road House!

There's no doubt that the action genre reigned supreme in the 1980s, and helped make stars out of folks like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Swarzengger. Franchises like Rocky, Rambo, and Conan were all the rage as the decade gave birth to new ones such as Terminator and Predator. Flying under the radar of all of these was Patrick Swayze, who was carving out his own niche as a versatile actor that was more than just muscle. The Outsiders and Dirty Dancing showed he could do more than just fight, and aside from Ghost, it's perhaps the 1989 film Road House that he's most remembered for, and now, after being unavailable to stream for a minute, you can relive all the action for free next month.

Lucy Liu reflects on her experience speaking out against Bill Murray on the set of Charlie's Angels. The original Charlie's Angels was a 1976 TV movie pilot, but was famously remade in 2000. This movie saw the trio of Liu, Cameron Diaz, and Drew Barrymore. Murray played Bosley in the film among a supporting cast that included Sam Rockwell, Kelly Lynch, Tim Curry, Matt LeBlanc, Crispin Glover, Luke Wilson, and LL Cool J. The film got a sequel three years later titled Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, which saw these leads reprise their roles.
Speaking with The Guardian, Liu reflects on confronting Murray on the set of Charlie's Angels. In describing her troublesome relationship with Murray on set, Liu mentioned that her co-star used language with her that was "inexcusable and unacceptable" and she called him out on it. She does not regret this interaction, saying that when she "sense[s] something is not right,...

It’s just part of the “bro code” to tell your buddy if you see their wife cheating on them – especially if the dude is a hunk. And that’s just the kind of guy Bill Murray is, although it’s probably expected that it’s tongue-in-cheek and meant to rib a friend over one famous Road House scene.
Bill Murray is just about one of the most unpredictable guys out there, but one thing that Mitch Glazer can always anticipate is a phone call any time Road House is on. That’s because Glazer’s wife, Kelly Lynch, plays the love interest to Patrick Swayze. Murray has told his tale of harassing Glazer many times before, but the Kelce brothers couldn’t help but ask him about it on their New Heights podcast.

Lucy Liu has reposnded to the idea of reprising her Charlie's Angels character. Liu portrayed Alex Munday in the 2000 movie and its sequel, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, starring alongside Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz. During a recent conversation with Entertainment Tonight, the Red One actress said she was "never going to say no" to the possibility of returning as Alex. But while Liu is open to another Charlie's Angels feature, fans of the films shouldn't rejoice just yet:
"I don't hear much of anything until it actually happens. I'm never going to say no to that. But I would be surprised to hear anything that gets done or undone. You just never know until it happens."
Charlie's Angels and its sequel were based on Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts' 1976 hit series about three women working as private investigators for a mysterious employer named Charlie. The series' first season was famously led by Jaclyn Smith,...

Stephen King is one of the biggest names in horror entertainment and among the most renowned authors today. His creative mind and excellent writing abilities have resulted in dozens of film adaptations of his popular novels and a few written exclusively for the screen. There's no denying that King is a household name among horror fans. However, his abilities as a talented actor aren't talked about nearly enough.
He hasn't had an extensive career in acting, with his role in Creepshow in 1982 being his most substantial screen performance to date. Despite this, King is well-known for cameos in many of his most iconic movie adaptations, including Pet Sematary and It: Chapter Two. In addition, he's made some notable appearances in popular TV shows such as The Simpsons. Known for representing his dark themes and impressive skills in comedic roles, these are some of King's best cameos.

Academy Award winner Denzel Washington is rightly considered one of the greatest actors not only of his generation, but of all time. But even a powerhouse performer like Washington is not immune to critics, with one of his earlier, much-maligned, efforts now landing on the streaming service Prime Video. Titled Virtuosity , Washington starred in the sci-fi action movie way, way back in 1995, alongside fellow Academy Award winner Russell Crowe . While the movie was panned at the time, and holds a rating of just 32% on Rotten Tomatoes, knowing what we know about the actors now, and the plots use of Ai, was it perhaps misunderstood?
Coming after acclaimed performances in the likes of Cry Freedom, Glory, Malcolm X, and Philadelphia, Virtuosity is set in the futuristic year of...1999, and finds Washington starring as Parker Barnes, a former cop who is imprisoned for killing the psychopath who killed his family. Decades before Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones made headlines by not kissing at the end of "Twisters," another big screen non-kiss was the talk of Hollywood. In the 1993 film "The Pelican Brief," two stars who were skyrocketing to fame shared plenty of screen time and chemistry, but no climactic kiss.
Denzel Washington starred opposite Julia Roberts in the big screen adaptation of John Grisham's legal thriller novel. "The Pelican Brief" was the last film ever written and directed by "Klute" and "All the President's Men" filmmaker Alan J. Pakula, and it was a box office hit despite earning mixed reviews from critics. One point of contention? The lack of lip-locking closure between the two main characters, a decision that would be talked about extensively in the press –- especially once they caught wind of the reason an apparently planned kiss scene got axed.

Although Tom Cruise mainly focuses on action movies these days, his career was also filled with several acclaimed dramatic performances. Long before Cruise started to scale the sides of buildings or jump from planes in franchises like Mission: Impossible, he made a name for himself balancing action-heavy movies with more nuanced roles in dramas, legal thrillers, rom-coms, and more. As a four-time Academy Award nominee, Cruise was no stranger to complex and challenging characters in intensely dramatic movies.
The best Tom Cruise movies also included some of his strongest dramatic performances, as he embodied all types of characters, from an idealistic Harvard graduate to a seedy pickup artist. Russell Crowe, Academy Award-winning actor and all-around Generally Very Aussie Guy, has never turned in a bad performance. The 1989 action classic Road House (watch it Here) recently got a decent enough Prime Video remake that’s set to receive a sequel – which is something the original movie should have gotten around 1991 or so. But no matter what other movies use the Road House title, nothing will ever compare to that ’89 movie… which I have vivid memories of watching at a drive-in during its initial release. On August 9, 2017, a TV show premiered with two huge names attached — Stephen King (one of the most successful writers alive) and David E. Kelley (one of the most successful TV creators alive) — and no one saw it. That show? Mr. Mercedes, an adaptation of King’s 2014 novel, the first in a trilogy about a detective named Bill Hodges and the psychopath that got away. But while your mileage may vary when it comes to the book — and the work of Kelley, who created shows like The Practice and Ally McBeal — neither of them are to blame. The problem was that it premiered on the Audience Network, a pay channel owned by AT&T that nobody knew how to find.
After the Audience Network folded in 2020, Mr. Mercedes, which somehow managed to get three full seasons, rolled over to Peacock. A good thing, too, as it’s got a cast to die for — Brendan Gleeson,...

Ryan Murphy is looking to part ways with a historic mid-century home designed by iconic architect Richard Neutra — to the tune of $33.9 million.
The clean-lined house in Bel Air, California is known as The Brown House and was built in 1955 by the late architect, who was known for pioneering the idea of indoor-outdoor California living and whose houses have since been owned and prized by such entertainment names as Flea, Mitch Glazer and Kelly Lynch, stylist Jeanne Yang, and directors Josef von Sternberg and Marc Forster.
Feud and American Horror Story creator Murphy purchased the Brown House in 2022 and set about renovating it and decorating it in an eclectic style that wasn’t slavish to its mid-century roots. As he wrote in Architectural Digest earlier this year, “Instead of surrounding ourselves in one particular midcentury style that had long gone out of fashion (and was actually uncomfortable), why not invite...

Denzel Washington's move into action films began with Virtuosity, which featured him chasing down an unstoppable killer played by Russell Crowe. Virtuosity help fill the void left by the Terminator franchise, with Sid's ability to regenerate and AI themes borrowing from Cameron's sci-fi saga. The Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco made her big-screen debut in Virtuosity as Karin, the daughter of Kelly Lynch's character.
A 1995 cyberpunk action movie fronted by Denzel Washington also marked Kaley Cuoco's big-screen debut. While some movie stars start their careers with action movies before moving into other genres, Denzel took the opposite route. Denzel Washington's movie CV is filled with stirring dramas and taut thrillers like Training Day, but in the early stages of his career, he largely avoided traditional action roles. Crimson Tide is a psychological thriller at its core, and while 1991's Ricochet is a secret Die Hard spinoff, it too largely eschews action.

Phil Karlson’s The Scarface Mob was originally made as a two-part pilot for the Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse anthology series before the 80-minute episodes were re-cut for theatrical release. Given the sterility of so much dramatic television in the 1950s, it’s hard to imagine Karlson—best known for hard-hitting noirs like Kansas City Confidential and The Phenix City Story—seeing the format as suitable for his style. But Desi Arnaz, a huge admirer of the latter film, promised Karlson no studio interference. And while The Scarface Mob’s story presents a clear battle between good and evil in the form of Eliot Ness (Robert Stack) and Al Capone’s (Neville Brand) Chicago bootlegging empire, Karlson’s gritty brutality finds its way on-screen as the film conflates the maniacal ruthlessness of both men’s actions.
Stack’s performance went a long way in cementing Ness’s legacy in the public imagination.

There are a lot cult classics from the 1980s, but Road House stands somewhere near the top. Sure, many of its fans wouldn’t label it as such, since they lovingly, legitimately and unironically adore it. But there’s no use in arguing it belongs in one camp over another or that it is unapologetically everything it sets out to be. But it – and its cult following – couldn’t have happened without a few broken ribs, a don’t-take-no producer and some pervy late-night phone calls to a star’s spouse. Yes, it involves Bill Murray… So, pour some suds and rip some throats because we’re gonna find out: Wtf Happened to this Movie?!

Otis Redding's romantic soul ballad "These Arms of Mine" plays during Patrick Swayze's love scenes in both Road House (1989) and Dirty Dancing (1987). The 2024 Road House remake excluded "These Arms of Mine," which only compounded the 2017 Dirty Dancing remake's failure to continue this Swayze movie trend as well. The 2025 Dirty Dancing legacy sequel can somewhat restore this trend if "These Arms of Mine" plays during a love scene, which would make up for these previously missed opportunities.
The 2024 Road House remake failed to continue one Patrick Swayze movie trend, but the upcoming sequel to his $214 million smash hit can correct this. When the remakes of 1984's Red Dawn and 1991's Point Break both bombed, it suggested that remakes of Patrick Swayze movies might be cursed. Thankfully, 2024's Road House destroyed this Patrick Swayze remake trend by proving to be a successful adaptation of the 1989 movie. One...

Road House became Prime Video's biggest hit, attracting 50 million viewers in two weekends. Director Doug Liman pushed for a theatrical release, sparking a debate on streaming vs. cinemas. The success of Road House on Prime Video proves it would have had potential as a big-screen release.
Prime Video's Road House is a massive hit for the streaming service. Directed by Doug Liman, with a screenplay written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry, the movie is a remake of the 1989 film of the same name and stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Elwood Dalton, an ex-UFC fighter who accepts a bouncing job at the Road House in the Florida Keys, while a local crime boss, Ben Brandt (Billy Magnussen), wants to take it over. The movie marks the acting debut of UFC fighter Conor McGregor as Knox, an enforcer tasked by Brandt's father to drive Dalton away from town.

The 1989 summer movie season might've officially kicked off on Memorial Day weekend with the release of Steven Spielberg's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," but having been a movie-mad 15-year-old kid at the time, I can assure you that May's first adrenalized action spectacular opened a week earlier when Patrick Swayze introduced us to a man named Dalton in the instant s***-kicker classic "Road House." Critics initially wrote it off as a mindless meathead programmer from mayhem merchant Joel Silver, but the aptly-monikered director Rowdy Herrington and the screenwriting duo of David Lee Henry and Hilary Henkin understood their ludicrous assignment and aced it with knowing aplomb. Their unabashed commitment to inherently risible material turned "Road House" into the "Citizen Kane" of bar bouncer movies.
Of course, "Road House" was, for a long time, the only bar bouncer movie ever made. Surprisingly, given the film's enduring popularity, few...

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Road House (2024)!
Road House (2024) leaves out characters like Cody, the band leader, creating a disconnect from the original's atmosphere and familiar charm. Despite not giving Cody a replacement, the remake maintains the live music feature, adding chaos and authenticity to fight scenes at the bar. The remake focuses more on Dalton, Ellie, Frankie, and villains, leaving out some supporting employees and staples from the 1989 film.
Though most characters from the 1989 movie had replacements in the 2024 Road House remake, one beloved figure from the original action film didn’t get an updated version. Only a few characters in Road House’s remake directly mirror characters from the Patrick Swayze-starring 1989 original, such as Dalton, Ellie, and Frankie. Largely, however, the remake’s characters are primarily new with loose similarities or comparable plot functions to characters from the 1989 film, such as the 2024 Road House’s Charlie...

The original Road House, starring Patrick Swayze, is considered by many to be the quintessential 1980s action film. However, the recent Doug Liman-directed remake from Amazon MGM Studios brought new life to the fan-favorite. Road House stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Daniela Melchior recently sat down with Cbr's Kevin Polowy to discuss the film, including the origin of an iconic shot from the trailer featuring Gyllenhaal showing off his shredded physique during a grueling workout.
Cbr: This movie is just ridiculously fun. It feels like a documentary almost. This is how I imagined just a couple of average days in Florida. Jake, what was most important to you that you guys kept intact from the original version?
Gyllenhaal: I mean, to me. First and foremost, for me personally, I think the energy that Patrick Swayze has in the original, and what he put into Dalton was this kind of quiet stillness,...

Jake Gyllenhaal brings a quiet yet powerful energy to his role in the action-packed remake of Road House. The Dominican Republic setting adds a grounded and community-driven vibe to the film's reimagined narrative. Liman's dynamic action sequences and Gyllenhaal's layered performance elevate the Road House remake to new heights.
Dalton is an ex-UFC fighter struggling to move past the violence of his life and make enough money to survive in Road House. When Frankie, owner of a roadhouse in the Florida Keys, asks him to work as a bouncer and protect her establishment from a local gang, he has little choice but to agree. After proving himself a major obstacle for the gang, local crime boss Brandt brings heavy-hitter Knox to level the playing field, with his new life proving to be even more dangerous than anything he faced in the Octagon.

After Road House in 1989, Patrick Swayze continued acting in hits like Ghost, Point Break, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, and Donnie Darko, before passing away in 2009. Sam Elliott maintained a successful acting career after Road House, starring in popular shows like The Ranch and the Yellowstone prequel, 1883. He became the only Oscar-nominated star from Road House when he received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance in the 2018 A Star Is Born remake. In addition to Swayze, several other Road House stars have since passed, including Ben Gazzara, Red West, Jeff Healey, and Sunshine Parker.

There is a scene in Rowdy Herrington’s 1989 cult classic Road House in which the main character, Dalton, played by certified 80s heartthrob Patrick Swayze, rips a man’s throat out with his bare hands. Here's how it plays out: Dalton is recovering from the hottest of dates with his love interest, Dr. Elizabeth Clay (Kelly Lynch), when one of his enemy's minions, Jimmy (Marshall Teague), blows up the house of the very nice farmer that agreed to offer him board during his stay at Jasper, Missouri. Enraged, Dalton jumps Jimmy as he's trying to get away on his motorcycle and engages in a fight that ends with the aforementioned throat-ripping. Disgusted, Elizabeth walks away from Dalton, leaving him to drag Jimmy's corpse across the lake toward the house of his rival, who just so happens to live on the other shore.

Road House 2, the latest iteration of the action-packed 1989 classic original, takes a bold step from its predecessor with noticeable changes to the plot. Unlike the original, there are noticeably no throat-splitting scenes in this modern adaptation.
Conor McGregor and Jake Gyllenhaal in Road House 2
This change may come as a disappointment to fans of the over-the-top original performances starring Patrick Swayze. Instead, the remastered version of Road House, now available to stream on Prime Video, stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Dalton, who, like Swayze’s iconic role, is tasked with restoring order to a chaotic bar plagued by nightly brawls and violence.

Making a big-budget film is becoming increasingly risky these days, as even projects believed to be sure-fire hits have been flopping. An even bigger risk? Having that big-budget film be a remake of a beloved classic. This is the case for the upcoming release of Prime's Road House, a film based on the 1989 original of the same name starring Patrick Swayze (Dirty Dancing), Kelly Lynch (Charlie's Angels), and Sam Elliot (Hulk). The original Road House is considered a cult classic and tells the story of Dalton (Swayze), a man with a mysterious past who is hired to work security at a club called the Double Deuce.

In 1989's "Road House," lifelong nightclub cooler/bouncer/warrior John Dalton (Patrick Swayze) shrugs off his various injuries with a sly phrase: "Pain don't hurt." Yet his lady love, Dr. Elizabeth Clay (Kelly Lynch), warns him that while he may shrug away pain right now, years later his injuries will catch up to him and pain will start to hurt very, very much. That's a truth which many athletes, servicepeople, and actors find themselves facing in their middle age and up, one which younger versions of themselves would do well to heed.
One such actor facing that reality is Sylvester Stallone, a star whose career off-screen greatly mirrors his typical journey on-screen. Just like the character closest to his real self, Rocky Balboa, Stallone does his best work when he's got something to prove, whether to himself, to Hollywood, the public, or some combination thereof. Just consider us Wade Garrett (Sam Elliott) to Doug Liman’s John Dalton (Patrick Swayze). Get your popcorn ready.
All IndieWire needed was a two-minute, 48-second trailer to declare the director 100 percent right about his “Road House” remake being tailor-made for movie theaters. Liman’s larger point, presented in a first-person essay on Deadline touting the importance of theatrical, is also correct — but it seems to be especially accurate for this film, which he’s already touted as possibly his best effort to date.
The trailer, released on Thursday, opens with a many-on-1 (the one is protagonist Jake Gyllenhaal) parking lot brawl. It then takes it to the cage; some of the matches are sanctioned, others are definitely not. Later comes the many bar fights, some gunplay, an alligator attack, a high-speed Ferrari chase, arson, a head-on boat collision, and Conor McGregor going nutso with a golf club.

UFC fighter Conor McGregor makes his acting debut as a villain in the Road House remake, surprising audiences and skeptics alike. Despite having no previous acting experience, McGregor's reputation as a fighter and his image as a "villain" in real life make him well-suited for the role. McGregor's presence in the film adds excitement and anticipation, and his action scenes are expected to be some of the best in the movie.

Jake Gyllenhaal suffers no fools in the first trailer for “Road House.”
The forthcoming remake of the 1989 cult classic finds Gyllenhaal starring as a former Mma fighter whose new life has him defending the honor of a Florida dive bar and its patrons from a wicked real estate baron.
Directed by Doug Liman, “Road House” will have its premiere at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival before hitting Amazon Prime Video on March 21. That the film will bypass movie theaters entirely before debuting on the streaming service has become a source of contention between Amazon and Liman. In a piece published Wednesday by Deadline, Liman wrote that he felt betrayed by Amazon, which acquired the rights to “Road House” after the company bought MGM. Liman wrote that he made “Road House” with an eye toward theatrical release, similar to how MGM films like “Creed III” first went to theaters before a streaming bow.

Editors note: From his breakout in Swingers to The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Edge of Tomorrow, American Made and his upcoming film with Tom Cruise they plan to shoot in outer space, Doug Liman’s films have a kinetic energy.
