The Green Mile, a supernatural prison drama from 1999, is finding new life on the free streaming service Tubi. The Stephen King adaptation stars Tom Hanks in one of his genuinely underrated performances. The film currently sits at the third spot on Tubi's Top 10 list of the service's most-watched films.
Written and directed by Frank Darabont, The Green Mile follows a group of prison guards working at the Cold Mountain Penitentiary death row, or as everyone calls it, "The Green Mile." Led by Officer Paul Edgecomb (Hanks), the group receives John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a new inmate who has been sentenced to death for a horrible crime. Coffey doesn't behave like a murderer and claims that he's innocent. Edgecomb eventually realizes that the convict even possesses an extraordinary power to heal people. But we'll leave it at that for those who still haven't seen this classic, as we'd rather not spoil it for you.

When curious viewers hit play on the first episode of Severance back in 2022, they could be forgiven for being a bit surprised by the director credit. Ben Stiller, like the guy from There's Something About Mary, Tropic Thunder, Zoolander? That Ben Stiller? It turns out that yes, the same guy who starred in some of the silliest and most memorable comedies of the '90s and 2000s was also one of the forces behind this much more sober sci-fi series.
It might have seemed like an unusual fit, at least for viewers who hadn't seen Stiller's previous directing project. That would be Escape at Dannemora, the 2018 Showtime limited series that dramatized the true story of two inmates who managed to escape the Clinton Correctional facility in Upstate New York in 2015. It marked Stiller's first time directing a limited series, and his most overtly dramatic project to date. It also might...

Throughout 2024, filmmakers have released multiple movies with runtimes between two and four hours, but some of the longest films don’t warrant the audience’s extra time and attention. After the strikes of 2023, viewers went into last year with extra excitement. Some of the highest-grossing films of 2024 included Wicked, Marvel’s Wolverine & Deadpool, and Inside Out 2. In addition to offering many great original films, the year brought about many movies with runtimes above 2 hours.
Long movies are nothing new in Hollywood, but they’re historically difficult to market. This makes it impressive that nine of the ten longest films of the year released in theaters, rather than going directly to streaming. Despite this, some of the longest movies of 2024 received great fanfare and performed well at the box office. Still, a few filmmakers pushed their luck too far in 2024 by making movies that couldn’t justify their runtimes.

Stephen King is one of the best storytellers of the 20th and 21st centuries, which makes it intriguing to see which movies resonate with him. Many of Stephen King's best books, including The Shining and It, have been adapted as movies, and some have even been adapted more than once. He is known for his horror stories, but he is also the author of the novella that was adapted into the hopeful and inspiring movie The Shawshank Redemption, along with writing the novella that is the source material for the upcoming and heartfelt Stephen King movie The Life of Chuck.
King's taste in movies is as varied as the wide range of stories that he has written over the years. As seen in the best Stephen King book endings, the prolific author knows how to tell and complete a good story, an art form that he recognizes and appreciates in the movies he watches.

15 years on, 2009 looks to be one of the best years for cinema in the 21st century. Several iconic directors produced some of their best work in 2009, including Kathryn Bigelow, Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino. The year also delivered some surprise hits, like Neil Blomkamp's District 9, which came out of nowhere to shake up the sci-fi genre and establish the director as a name worth keeping an eye on.
At the box office, the big story of 2009 was the record-breaking success of Avatar, which is something that continues to shape the movie industry. Other big financial winners were Pixar's Up, which is yet another animated classic from the studio, and The Hangover, which is the kind of comedy that probably wouldn't be as successful in today's industry. 2009's best movies encompass dramas, sci-fi, horror and more.

It is not uncommon for TV stars to direct episodes of the series on which they appear. Alan Alda, Mike Farrell, Harry Morgan and David Ogden Stiers all directed more than one episode of "M*A*S*H;" Peter Bonerz became a prolific director of television shows and films after directing 29 episodes of "The Bob Newhart Show;" and Penny Marshall might never have brought us such big screen classics as "Big" and "A League of Their Own" had she not started out directing on "Laverne & Shirley."

The nepo baby discourse as it pertains to the arts is typically a grievance-driven undertaking that allows low- to no-talent individuals the opportunity to blame someone other than themselves for their lack of success. Though there have been instances of celebrity-adjacent people receiving seemingly undeserved gigs, these are usually one-and-not-too-many-more-done deals undone by the recipient's profound absence of skill.

Showtime's Escape at Dannemora utilizes an exceptional cast to tell its true-crime story. The 2018 limited series is based on the 2015 Clinton Correctional Facility escape, which saw two men, Richard Matt and David Sweat, successfully break out thanks to the help of their shared prison-employee girlfriend, Joyce "Tilly" Mitchell. Showtime needed actors like Benicio del Toro, Patricia Arquette, Paul Dano, Bonnie Hunt, and more to bring these and other real-world characters to life.
Escape at Dannemora originally premiered on Showtime in 2018, but it has since come to Netflix, claiming a spot on the Top 10 In October 2024. The series, which was created by Brett Johnson and Michael Tolkin, was directed by actor Ben Stiller and explores the true events leading up to, during, and after the infamous 2015 prison break. If you think "there's nothing to watch on Netflix," then you're just plain incorrect. Over the past year, the streaming service has been delivering not only dozens upon dozens of excellent original series, but Netflix has also been hand-picking a vast variety of small-screen favorites from past and present for our viewing pleasure. And the binge-watching Gods continue to give the goods.
The latest acquired series to make its drop on Netflix is the Emmy Award-nominated crime drama limited series Escape at Dannemora, which made its premiere on Showtime back in November 2018. The series was co-created by Brett Johnson and Michael Tolkin, and all eight episodes were directed by Ben Stiller.
Escape at Dannemora began streaming on Netflix on Tuesday, Oct. 22, and given how much acclaim the series earned the first time around (the series holds an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes), there's no doubt that the series will once again resurge...

"Make me believe why I should deal with you ever again!" Time for yet another Classic Trailer Rewatch session. Back to the 90s for another big summer movie from that era. The Negotiator was one of the big summer movies in 1998, opening at the end of July after lots of early hype. I remember being very excited to watch it and find out what was going on, and I recall everyone else being into it, too. Strangely checking the box office numbers, it only ended up earning $44M on a $43.M budget. I thought it was a bigger hit - but I guess not! In a desperate attempt to prove his innocence, a skilled police negotiator accused of corruption and murder takes hostages in a government office to gain the time he needs to find the truth. I love the twist in this - the expert negotiator becomes the hostage...

St Elsewhere's Dr. Mark Craig mentions working with Mash's Bj Hunnicutt in Korea, linking the two shows. St Elsewhere shares a universe with Mash and many other series, including Homicide: Life on the Streets and Oz. The controversial ending of St Elsewhere suggests the show (and Mash) are all an elaborate fantasy.
Classic sitcom Mash may very well share a universe with another hit medical drama. Mash's season 1 ratings were so poor it was almost canceled, and it was only saved after it rebounded during re-runs. Ultimately, Mash ran for 11 seasons and left a major impact on television as a medium. As the years wore on, it became a hybrid of comedy and drama, mixing quips and clever wordplay with genuinely emotional scenes. It speaks to how large a cultural shadow it left that no reboot attempts have been made since it ended in 1983.

This article contains spoilers for "12 Monkeys."
Terry Gilliam's 1995 time-travel freakout "12 Monkeys" begins in the not-so-distant future of 2035, when Earth is recovering from a worldwide plague that wiped out most of humanity. The survivors have moved underground and are kept in cages, overseen by a tyrannical cadre of cruel, tribunal-like scientists. These scientists also have access to a clunky, not-very-accurate time machine that they use to shunt hapless draftees into the past, forcing them to investigate the origins of the virus. The film's protagonist, James Cole (Bruce Willis), is eventually sent back in time to 1990 and 1996, when the plague began.
The time machine, however, toys with the user's brain, so Cole isn't always cogent during his visits to the past. He ends up falling in love with a woman in the past (Madeline Stowe) and discover a 1990s conspiracy involving an eco-terrorism group called the Army of the 12 Monkeys.

Outsiders season 3 never happened due to WGN America's cancellation. The show's unique tone and characters earned a fanbase, but no movement for a new network. Creator Peter Mattei teased a Waco-style standoff in season 3, unresolved questions left fans curious.

Disturbia was not a remake of Rear Window but drew inspiration from it, creating an original story. The idea for Disturbia came to Christopher Landon while listening to Martha Stewart's house arrest story. D. J. Caruso and Shia Labeouf watched Straw Dogs, The Conversation, and Say Anything to prepare for the film.
The 2007 neo-noir psychological thriller Disturbia, starring Shia Labeouf, has strong similarities to an Alfred Hitchcock classic, raising questions about it being a remake or a modern version of it. Directed by D. J. Caruso and with a script by Christopher Landon and Carl Ellsworth, Disturbia starred Shia Labeouf, Sarah Roemer, David Morse, and Carrie-Anne Moss. Disturbia was well-received by critics and was a box-office success, and it found more success upon its arrival on Netflix, quickly climbing to the streaming giants global top 10.
Disturbia follows Kale Brecht (Labeouf), who is sentenced to three months of house arrest.

Serialized storylines are, naturally, tricky for shows that are, by design, inherently episodic. When "House" devoted a large chunk of its third season to the relentless Detective Michael Tritter (David Morse) trying to get back at Hugh Laurie's misanthropic diagnostician for humiliating him, the series' writers were banking on viewers not losing interest before the pair's conflict had concluded. As one of those viewers, let me tell you: It's a good thing they didn't push their luck any further than they did, even if pitting House against a cop was about as effective a way as any to get us to overlook the former's many, many blatantly unethical indiscretions and root for him to outwit this wannabe Moriarty to his Sherlock.
"Bones," like "House," was primarily episodic, with its namesake, Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel), and her other half, FBI agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz), typically wrapping up a...

Michael Douglas is in terrific form as Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV’s new historical limited series “Franklin” but he isn’t the only actor to emerge with awards whispers whizzing through the air. Veteran actor Eddie Marsan features in a key supporting role as John Adams and delivers one of the finest performances of his career while also shining a new light onto a man that many actors have depicted before.
The limited series follows Franklin’s eight years in France as he tried to persuade King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to join the colonies’ cause and aid them in the American Revolutionary War. The scenes between Douglas and Marsan are nothing short of spectacular and Marsan nails his performance as Adams, as noted by critics.
Clint Worthington (Roger Ebert) noted: “Marsan’s energy as Adams is decidedly different from Paul Giamatti’s in Ellis’ original 2008 miniseries—“Franklin” feels...

The 1999 Frank Darabont film "The Green Mile" has its fair share of truly despicable characters, but the grossest of them all has to be Sam Rockwell's "Wild Bill" Wharton, who assaults and abuses both corrections officers and his fellow inmates with abandon. In the film, based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King, Wild Bill is an inmate who comes to the death row facility where guard Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) works and makes life hell for everyone there, and Rockwell really put his all into it, portraying one of cinema's biggest slimeballs. He uses racist slurs, urinates on a guard's shoes, and spits a whole bunch of Moon Pie chocolate filling all over another guard. He also spits right in Paul's face, and it's nasty.

Denzel Washington's success was propelled by his impressive talent showcased on St. Elsewhere, where he learned and grew alongside a talented ensemble cast.
