The pic follows two dudes who are hired by terrifying crime boss, Charles (Craig Robinson), to transport a box of contraband psychedelic toads from L.A. to Vegas. When the soaring desert temperatures cause the toads to suffer heatstroke, the two imbeciles are inadvertently dosed when they give the toads CPR and suddenly find themselves on a hallucinogenic odyssey.
Williams will play Earl, a cigar-chomping, human-size anthropomorphic toad who may or may not be a figment of the boys’ imaginations. Earl pops up at key points along their journey to give them unsolicited but much-needed advice and philosophical wisdom.

In multiple outstanding reviews of the newly revived Broadway musical Gypsy, six-time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald has been applauded for her outstanding performance as the main character Mama Rose.
Gypsy, set during the Great Depression, follows Mama Rose as she desperately tries to support her daughter’s dreams of being a vaudeville star. When her daughter does eventually get her big break, Rose is left feeling abandoned after the success of her efforts.
A historically beloved story often referred to as the “Mt. Everest” of musical theater, the central role of Rose has been passed down through a series of impressive actresses over the years, from Ethel Merman in the 1959 original, and on to Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, Bette Midler and Patti LuPone.
An actress who is known for defying racial typecasting in her career, McDonald broke barriers in the 1994 revival of the play Carousel in which she...

Audra McDonald should start making room for her 7th Tony Award because it sounds like she might be winning another one, based on the reviews for her performance in Gypsy.
The legendary Broadway star, who holds the record for most acting Tony wins with six awards, celebrated the opening night of her new show on Thursday (December 19) at the Majestic Theatre in New York City.
Audra looked incredible in a red gown on the red carpet while attending the after party with co-stars Danny Burstein, Joy Woods, Jordan Tyson, and Kevin Csolak, among others.
Gypsy, suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, is Broadway’s ultimate tale of mothers and daughters, ambition and fame, and the lengths we’ll go in pursuit of the American dream. Previous actresses to lead Broadway productions include Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, and Patti LuPone.
USA Today says the show is “a once-in-a-lifetime event!

Ask newer fans what the greatest musical of all time is and recency bias probably means the answer will be something like Rent or Les Misérables or Hamilton. Ask seasoned theater folk with wider frames of reference and Gypsy will usually land in the top three. For good reason. The 1959 warhorse is perhaps the ultimate tragicomic depiction of showbiz struggle, which makes it a strong contender for the ultimate Broadway musical.
It’s a cliché to call Rose, the archetypal pushy stage mother at the show’s center, the King Lear of musical theater. But that’s hard to dispute when you watch a consummate performer like Audra McDonald pour her heart and soul and every ounce of her gumption, her supple vocals and finely nuanced acting skills into the titanic role.

Refresh For Updates: Today’s shocking news of the cancer death of stage star Gavin Creel has left Broadway reeling and in deep mourning. “We lost our prince,” wrote New York City Center, where Creel turned in a for-the-ages performance in the delightful 2022 revival of the Stephen Sondheim-James Lapine musical Into The Woods.
“I looked forward to working with him every single night,” tweeted his Hello, Dolly! star Bette Midler. “He was fantastic. I can’t believe he’s gone. What a loss.”
Sutton Foster, who co-starred with Creel in 2002’s Thoroughly Modern Millie, wrote on Instagram, “My sweet friend. I will love you forever.”
Among the more poignant remembrances pouring onto social media comes from Casey Likes, the young star of Broadway’s Almost Famous and Back to the Future.
In a heartfelt post on social media, Likes writes, “absolutely crushed. Gavin came to almost famous and that is where we met.

When you think of Steve Martin, you probably don’t think “incel weirdo.” On top of being 79 years old and therefore simply having ample time to have encountered women, he’s been in several high-profile relationships with extremely non-desperate ones, including Bernadette Peters, Mary Tyler Moore, Karen Carpenter and Anne Heche. He’s even been married twice, and not quickie Vegas mistakes.
So you’d think, at some point, he’d have gotten familiar with women’s bodies and the things that they do to them. However, based on a passage of his 2000 novella Shopgirl — yes, the one that became a 2005 Steve Martin movie — we can only conclude that everything Steve Martin thinks he knows about women is wrong.
The passage in question concerns a woman on a quest to lure a rich man away from her co-worker: “To Lisa, Prada is as recognizable as her own mother, and seeing...

There is something indelibly appealing about Greek mythology movies, from classics like Spartacus to more recent fare like Troy (2004). Incorporating imaginative elements into the sincerity of religion, they are magical realism of the highest order, wherein humans coexist with monsters. The gods were as flawed as humans, making them relatable. They were vain and vengeful, inviting convoluted and operatic drama. Further, Angient Greek civilization was a highpoint of ancient civilization. Their grandiose stories and lives will perpetuate them in eternity - a point proven by how epic in scale so many timeless movies based on Ancient Greek myths are.
Many modern storytelling tropes can be traced to ancient Greek mythology; from the epic journey of Odysseus to the fable of Orpheus and Eurydice, themes of tragedy, triumph, love, and loss are common in these ancient tales. They've proven to be fertile grounds for Hollywood. Not every big-budget interpretation of Greek mythology has succeeded,...

Steve Martin and Martin Short keep making appearances to promote Only Murders in the Building/their never-ending game of over-the-top animosity. Most recently, the two amigos interviewed each other for GQ, and gave the finest acting performances of their careers by pretending like they hadn’t already heard every single one of each other’s anecdotes.

Soon, the subject turned to fan encounters. Short recounted how he can always tell which movie someone is a fan of when they approach him in public. “If it’s a 45-year-old guy, and if I’m in an airport, I know it’s Three Amigos,” Short mused. “If it’s a young lady in her late 30s, she will talk about Father of the Bride. And if it’s a guy who’s 28 who looks like he’s on meth, (he’s a fan of) Clifford.”

Brandy Norwood is having quite a year, which includes returning as Cinderella more than two decades after first playing the role for Disney.

The pair is back to reprise their characters in Descendants: The Rise of the Red, which is currently streaming on Disney+ and is set to debut on the Disney Channel on Aug. 9.

The new film is the fourth installment in the Disney Channel-produced Descendants franchise that first launched in 2015. Descendants: The Rise of Red centers on Red (Kylie Cantrall), the daughter of the Queen of Hearts (Rita Ora), and Chloe,...

Even Mario Bava’s succinctly titled horror “Hatchet for the Honeymoon” 54 years ago did not imagine a more vividly unpleasant entrée to wedlock than “Crumb Catcher,” Chris Skotchdopole’s feature directorial bow. In this mix of home-invasion thriller and grotesque comedy, a just-hitched young couple already on each other’s last nerves are surprised by uninvited visitors, causing the night to go from bad to very much worse. If you can withstand spending nearly two hours in the company of these grating, argumentative characters, there are rewards to be had in a skillfully wrought, twisty suspense tale that releases to limited U.S. theaters on July 19.
Introduced posing for photos immediately after their wedding, Shane (Rigo Garay) and Leah (Ella Rae Peck) do not appear to be much of a love match. He’s clearly discomfited by the high-end surroundings, which her otherwise disapproving parents apparently bankrolled; she unthinkingly “corrects” his every spoken thought.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

The Pitch: Christopher Walken Gets to Dance and Steve Martin Sings… Sort of?
Known for his BBC TV series “The Singing Detective,” starring Michael Gambon, and “Pennies from Heaven,” which launched the career of Bob Hoskins, British journalist and screenwriter Dennis Potter seemed to have a fascination with the music trapped inside our inner beings. Mixing fantastical musical sequences with harsh dramatic realities, Potter used spectacle to expose his characters’ complex natures, as well as the complex nature of the world around them, with biting wit and stunning inventiveness. The off-Broadway comedic hit Oh, Mary! is moving to Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre starting June 26, and, while it’s gaining a bigger platform, Cole Escola, the show’s star and creator, wants to keep the zany hit show pretty much as is.
“It’s going to be bigger, better, bolder …” Escola says, before dropping the act. “It’s going to be exactly the same … we don’t want to spoil the recipe.”
That recipe saw the play — which had its world premiere at the Lucille Lortel Theatre last winter — sell out and extend twice. Given that the play follows a reimagined Mary Todd Lincoln, depicting her as a petulant wannabe cabaret star with a predilection for booze and, in its absence, paint thinner, the warm reception wasn’t necessarily a given. It even drew praise from Lincoln director Steven Spielberg, Sally Field (who played Mary in the movie) and screenwriter Tony Kushner,...

More than two decades after duking it out with her evil stepmother (Bernadette Peters) in Cinderella, Brandy Norwood is at it again in the first official trailer for A24s upcoming horror flick, The Front Room. This time around, it isnt a stepmother causing Norwood emotional and mental trauma, but instead, her character finds herself at odds with her mother-in-law. Its hard to say which one is worse an evil stepmother or a psychotic mother-in-law but if the official trailer gives us any clues, the latter may take the cake.

Bedsheets, pajamas, school supplies, toys, and anything else that furnished my little life was frequently themed to honor Jasmine, Ariel, Mulan, Pocahontas, or Belle: a squadron of girl-power role models that, all things considered, weren’t too shabby in retrospect.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: It’s Christmas at the Castle… and the Wood Axe is Jewish!

Martin Gage, a veteran Hollywood and New York talent agent whose client roster over the decades included Woody Harrelson, Kirstie Alley, Geraldine Page, Kim Basinger and Tim Robbins, died yesterday in Los Angeles. He was 89.
His death was announced by the Brs/Gage Talent Agency.
Born in New York on May 4, 1934, Gage began his show business career as an actor in the 1950s, performing on and Off Broadway, as well as in summer stock and the Las Vegas production of the musical comedy La Plume De Ma Tante.
Gage shifted his focus to representation in the 1960s, first as a manager, and then as an agent. He joined the Fifi Oscard Agency, and after four years became a partner in the newly-dubbed Oscard-Gage Agency. There may not be a funnier moment on screen this year than when Ryan Gosling yells “sublime!” off-screen in Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar box office smash “Barbie.”
That’s why Variety Awards Circuit Podcast had a pressing question that needed answering from the filmmaker herself: Who gets the credit for this brilliant moment?
“Ryan had the idea of [Ken] having a private moment that she [Barbie] can hear,” Gerwig reveals. “Because, of course, there’s no walls or privacy in Barbie Land. And then I will give myself credit, I came up with ‘sublime.’ I kept thinking, what’s the funniest word? I kept going back to ‘sublime.’ It’s the oddest word. But I let him do lots of things, because, why not? He did some very long sentences that he screamed. One was ‘Finally! My rainbow after the storm!’”
There are countless admirable and brilliant moments just like that throughout the Warner Bros. meta-comedy.

Steven Pasquale and Jeremy Shamos started working on the new Stephen Sondheim musical, Here We Are, seven years ago, while others, like Denis O’Hare, were asked to join the project last summer.
But for everyone now starring in the show, which opened Off-Broadway at The Shed on Oct. 22, joining the project was an immediate yes, largely due to the novelty of being in a new Sondheim piece, which ended up being the composer’s first new show in decades, as well as his last.
“I know all [his] shows. I know the music. I didn’t even have to read it. I said yes before I read it,” said Bobby Cannavale, who is part of the show’s ensemble cast, which also includes David Hyde Pierce, Micaela Diamond and Rachel Bay Jones.
