The streaming wars remain a struggle in juggling quantity and quality. However, there's one service that's struck a finely tuned balance, since one can say the best TV shows on Max can also be considered among the greatest TV series of all time, according to IMDb. Now, if only someone could convince Max's parent company to stop removing original series and movies for tax break purposes, that would be terrific. Don't let Zaslavamania run wild, brother!

Welcome to the 175th edition of Adventure(s) Time, where we examine beloved animated series and their comic cousins. This week, the debut of the villainess who, in some parallel world, became Superman's Harley Quinn. Just not this world. And if you have any suggestions for the future, let me hear them. Just contact me on Twitter.
Debuting on September 13, 1997, "Livewire" comes from Superman: The Animated Series' second season, courtesy of writers Evan Dorkin & Sarah Dyer and director Curt Geda. Arguably, creating new characters wasn't a huge concern for the producers of Superman, just as their earlier priorities on Batman: The Animated Series focused more on adapting the classic cast members than creating new friends and foes.
Still, Batman introduced fans to Renee Montoya and Harley Quinn, which is certainly a respectable pedigree, and Superman's debut season brought us Mercy Graves, Lex Luthor's loyal (and lethal) assistant. "Livewire," originally...

Attention all fans of '90's cinema and off-the-wall action, please take note: Point Break is leaving Netflix on December 1st of this year. The film — which stars Keanu Reeves as FBI agent Johnny Utah and Patrick Swayze as surfer and criminal Bodhi — is essential viewing for anyone who likes action that leaves you at the edge of your seat, and incredibly compelling character dynamics that pull you into a world of thievery done just for the thrill of it.
Rather than simply being a conventional game of cat-and-mouse between cop and robber — such as venerated classics like Michael Mann's Heat — Point Break is groundbreaking in its commitment to entangling Reeves' character Johnny with the mastermind Bodhi. The criminal has an alluring philosophy, one of constantly chasing the ultimate thrill, and it draws the undercover cop into their dangerous lifestyle. The unconventional nature of the two leads' relationship, paired with the stunning action,...

The story centers around an FBI Agent who goes undercover to infiltrate a group of surfers, who are suspected to be involved in a recent string of bank robberies. Leading the surfers is the charismatic Bodhi, who likes living on the edge. However, while doing the mission, Johnny develops a complex friendship with Bodhi, leading him to get drawn into their lifestyle and philosophies. To make matters difficult, Johnny also unexpectedly falls in love with a female surfer, who’s close to the gang.

Kleenex must be making a fortune off of NCIS: Origins. I don’t know how the writers do it, but every episode is more intense than the last. Pretty soon, viewers will be too dehydrated to watch the show.
Between the return to Gibbs’s trauma over losing his wife, watching Franks be the entire heart of the Nis, and a truly heartbreaking case on top of that, I’d say “One Flew Over” was a borderline overdose of emotion.
That said, NCIS: Origins managed a few quirky moments that certainly earned some laughs. For example, I agree with Lori Petty’s Dr. Lenora Friedman, who said that Lala and Randy would have cute kids.

The 2024 Blu-ray release of Tank Girl by Eureka will let you enjoy this feminist 1995 pop culture classic. The movie itself is in full HD. It looks and sounds great. The title screen looks good and is in keeping with the film. There is a single menu for the main feature, the audio and special features. It is well laid out and easily accommodates all of the elements within it. Also it integrates well with the artwork on the title screen, which was done by Greg Staples.
Beyond the movie there are the special features. The audio commentary with Lori Petty (Rebecca Buck/Tank Girl) and the director Rachel Talalay is engaging. Talalay talks a lot about the difficulties with the studio, from big things like them deleting scenes to them objecting to tracks sung by female vocalists.
There are a number of interviews and short documentary pieces. They do of course.

NCIS: Origins star Kyle Schmid teases how the upcoming Christmas episode will be crucial for Franks and Gibbs. Schmid plays Special Agent Mike Franks in the first NCIS spinoff that's also a prequel, focusing on the early years of Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell) as he attempts to assemble a team in the very early 1990s. He accomplishes this with the help of Franks, his mentor, who Muse Watson played in the main NCIS series.
In an interview with TV Insider, Schmid previewed what to expect from the prequel's upcoming Christmas episode. The episode, which airs December 16 on CBS at 10 Pm Et, is a really cool snapshot of the Gibbs and Franks bond. In the quote below, the actor also touches on what makes the friendship between the two characters so crucial:

The prequel NCIS: Origins casts its Abby and Ducky replacements for Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Mike Franks' prequel team. After the divisive cancelation of NCIS: Hawai'i, CBS is once again expanding its top-rated procedural franchise. This time, however, it is a prequel narrative with the origin story of Mark Harmon's Leroy Jethro Gibbs. NCIS: Origins has recast young Gibbs with Austin Stowell, who will play the character in the '90s, during his first decade in the agency under Mike Franks' (Kyle Schmid) tutelage. Aside from the pair and Diany Rodriguez's Vera Strickland, the rest of the squad are new characters.
A new report from Variety reveals that NCIS: Origins has cast its version of Pauley Perrette's Abby Sciuto and David McCallum's Ducky Mallard with Bobby Moynihan and Lori Petty, respectively. Moynihan will portray Woodrow Woody Browne, the wildly overworked senior chemist and director of the Nis Forensic Lab,...

NCIS: Origins premiered this week, and Leroy Jethro Gibbs was back in a very different form. Instead of Mark Harmon playing the iconic role, Austin Stowell plays the character as he first joins NCIS as a probe himself, and starts his career. However, Stowell isn’t the first actor to play a young Gibbs, as Sean Harmon played the character in flashbacks on the main series.
Now, Mark Harmon is explaining why Sean didn’t return to the role in NCIS: Origins.
Why Mark Harmon’s Son Isn’t Gibbs In NCIS: Origins
In the original NCIS series, Mark Harmon’s son, Sean played the character of Gibbs in flashbacks to when he was a young NCIS officer. However, with the new series solely focused on Gibbs’ start at NCIS, the show chose to go with Bridge of Spies actor, Austin Stowell.

Sports movies often have inspirational coaches who lead their teams to victory, but there are also some terrible coaches which span from irresponsible and boorish to homicidal. The best sports movie coaches can be just as inspiring as the athletes, and some movies focus on them rather than the characters on the field. However, some movies, especially sports comedies, have laughably bad coaches instead.
Bad coaches in sports movies are often the villains, like Kreese in The Karate Kid or Hung in Shaolin Soccer. They aren't just bad because they're ineffective; they also knowingly endanger the athletes due to their obsessions with winning. Whether they should be fired or arrested, bad coaches can make sports movies much more interesting by raising the stakes and providing compelling villains.

Tom Hanks’ A League of Their Own character famously said, “There’s no crying in baseball,” but folks might make an exception today. A baseball park east of Los Angeles that has been a popular filming location for movies and TV shows was badly damaged in a fire overnight.
Along with the Penny Marshall-directed 1992 pic that starred Hanks, Geena Davis, Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna and Lori Petty, the park also has hosted film shoots for such features as the 1988 Charlie Sheen-John Cusack Black Sox movie Eight Men Out and the 1992 biopic The Babe starring John Goodman as Babe Ruth. It also has been used for numerous TV commercials, the city said.
The blaze was reported around 11:30 p.m. Thursday at Jay Littleton Ball Park in Ontario. An Ontario Fire Department spokesperson told Key News Network that the fire was fully involved when the crews reached to the scene.

NCIS: Origins co-showrunner David North has addressed concerns that the show featuring Gibbs' father would be a plot hole. He said that the creators are aware of the canon of NCIS, which is that Gibbs and his father have not spoken since his wife Shannon's funeral. This quote may indicate that the show largely involves Jackson Gibbs in flashback sequences.
A potential NCIS: Origins plot hole involving Gibbs' father has been addressed. NCIS: Origins will tell the story of Leroy Jethro Gibbs and his start in the NCIS branch. Of course, Mark Harmon played Gibbs in the main NCIS series for 19 seasons. However, since Gibbs retired, he moved to Naktok Bay, Alaska, and that is where Harmon’s character has been all this time.
As for NCIS: Origins, here is what you can expect from Harmon in the new series.
Mark Harmon Only Voicing Series Narrator
Mark Harmon will serve in the same role in NCIS: Origins that Jim Parsons did in Young Sheldon. Harmon will executive produce the show, and he will serve as the faceless narrator (an older Gibbs recounting his youthful days). However, Harmon will not physically appear on screen in the new series.

This fall, NCIS: Origins will launch on CBS, taking fans into the backstory of Leroy Jethro Gibbs and his history with the agency. Austin Stowell is taking over the role from Mark Harmon, and a new video provides the best look yet at the younger Gibbs.
The video was shared on the official Instagram account for NCIS. From the set of NCIS: Origins, the video reveals Stowell going through his transformation to more closely resemble the Gibbs character. This means getting a shave and a haircut before putting on Gibbs-style clothing, making Stowell look a lot like a younger version of Harmon. The video can be watched below.

The team on NCIS: Origins is growing: Lori Petty and Bobby Moynihan are joining the NCIS prequel that debuts October 14 on CBS.
Petty will play an assistant medical examiner while Moynihan will take over as a lead forensic analyst. Their additions to the cast were announced Saturday at the show’s TCA panel that included former NCIS star Mark Harmon, who is an executive producer and narrator on the prequel. Showrunners are Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North.
Also joining the producers on the dais was Harmon’s son Sean, who recurred on NCIS as a younger Jethro in seven episodes from 2008-2020, and was the one who first pitched the idea. He was asked to explain why it’s not him playing his dad’s character (the role went to Bridge of Spies‘ Austin Stowell).

Geena Davis did not play older Dottie in A League of Their Own's ending - Lynn Cartwright did, with Davis' voice dubbed over. The movie used a clever trick with Lynn Cartwright to connect the two eras of Dottie's life in a convincing way. Despite the deception, Geena Davis was still somewhat present as older Dottie through her voice dubbed over Cartwright's portrayal.

As a kid growing up in the nineties, a movie that always got a ton of play in my household was Penny Marshall’s A League of Their Own. I have fond memories of seeing it in theaters as a ten-year-old in the summer of 1992, and it’s a movie I only revisit from time to time. So, I’m pretty happy to hear that my next revisit will be in glorious 4K, with Sony revealing that the movie’s coming out on 4K disc this September, with a fully loaded special edition.
For those who may not remember the film, it’s based on the real-life All-American Girls Baseball League, which sprung up during World War II, as most male players were overseas fighting the war. In the film, Geena Davis (in an iconic performance) plays Dottie Hinson, who, along with her sister Kit (Lori Petty), becomes a star player for the Rockford Peaches.

First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

The Pitch: Justice for Lori Petty!
One of cinema’s greatest action heroes is a fiercely feminist freedom fighter captured by an oppressive regime controlling the water supply of a post-apocalyptic landscape. Seeking revenge after her family was ripped from her, the heroine escapes the grasp of the army by stealing a vehicle of war, and ventures across the vast post-punk deserts of Australia with the ultimate goal of eventually slaying the white-haired tyrant who ruined her life.

We live in a golden era of sci-fi on TV, where "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" come in multiple flavors, "Stranger Things" is an event every season, and the CW recently wrapped up an entire universe of DC Comics superheroes on the small screen. Fortunately for all sci-fi fans, this is a time where the people who make such shows grew up loving them, and critics who review them were raised on the concepts and get it. This is all a relatively new phenomenon.
As recently as the '90s, TV critics weren't necessarily big on high-concept sci-fi, and the people making these shows didn't always know what they were doing either. Even if they did, producers over their heads weren't necessarily making the best decisions either. Superheroes on TV were entirely different three decades ago, and the weekly format was just discovering the notion of season-long arcs. There were growing pains to be sure,...

The women who starred as professional baseball players in A League of Their Own were really playing ball — before filming, all of the actors went through a baseball boot camp and learned how to play the game. And then, during filming, they were out there on the field. Granted, things didn’t always go as planned. It’s been well documented how many injuries occurred on the set, including Lori Petty’s broken foot. At the time the film was released, though, Geena Davis told us that she’d earned a dubious title during the shoot: Queen of Bruises. Lori Petty's return to Netflix in "Obliterated" is reminiscent of her scene-stealing role in "Orange is the New Black." Petty's portrayal of Crazy Susan in "Obliterated" is both wacky and endearing, showcasing her dynamic acting skills. Petty's involvement in "Obliterated" adds excitement and entertainment value to the show, making her a highlight in an otherwise unknown cast.

Plot: Obliterated is a high octane action-comedy from the creators of Cobra Kai that tells the story of an elite special forces team who thwarts a deadly threat to Las Vegas. After their celebratory party, filled with booze, drugs and sex, the team discovers that the bomb they deactivated was a fake. The now intoxicated team has to fight through their impairments, overcome their personal issues, find the real bomb, and save the world.
Review: When an elite team of special forces, commandos, and spies team up to save the day, that is usually the end of the story. The credits typically roll on a happy ending once the bad guy is killed and the world is saved. The new series Obliterated looks at what happens when that celebration is premature in a blend of the team action of The A-Team with the drug and alcohol-fueled excess of The Hangover.

Arriving at the tail end of the machismo-laden action movie boom of the 1980s, Kathryn Bigelow’s Point Break represented a different kind of blockbuster. As Gus Van Sant did the same year with My Own Private Idaho and the Wachowskis would do with their Matrix films, Bigelow foregrounds the androgynous qualities of Keanu Reeves, presenting his rookie F.B.I. agent Johnny Utah as a lithe, sensitive soul who infiltrates a gang of bank robbers not through a projection of strength but an appeal to the criminals’ own, surprisingly delicate natures.
The film begins with Johnny arriving at the F.B.I.’s Los Angeles branch for his first assignment. There, he’s greeted and immediately insulted by the director (John C. McGinley), whose strict rules for personal conduct and mirthless commitment to the job paint him as one of the dying relics of the service’s original, Hoover-led era. The other agents,...

Given how outlandish and enormous the "Fast & Furious" film series would eventually become, it's a little mind-boggling to remember that Rob Cohen's 2001 original, "The Fast and the Furious," was little more than a mid-budget "Point Break" knockoff. The story goes that star Paul Walker, having enjoyed working with Cohen on the 2000 college thriller "The Skulls" was asked what his dream action project would be. Walker said that he wanted to appear in an action movie mashup of "Days of Thunder" and "Donnie Brasco." That is: something with fast cars, but also a cop who goes undercover to infiltrate the criminal underground. The subsequent screenplay, written by Gary Scott Thompson, drew inspiration from a 1998 article in Vibe Magazine all about the New York underground racing scene. David Ayer was brought in to work on a draft, and he changed the setting to Los Angeles and made the cast more diverse.

The A League of Their Own film is inspired by the real All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (Aagpbl) from 1943 to 1954. The Rockford Peaches, featured in the film, were a real team in the Aagpbl and were successful, winning several championships. Although the film fictionalizes many aspects, it still brings awareness to the Aagpbl and celebrates the players' contributions while addressing criticisms of lack of racial and queer inclusivity.
The A League Of Their Own true story is about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, a real league from 1943 to 1954. The Penny Marshall film loosely follows the story of the Aagpbl, which was formed in 1943 during World War II when Major League Baseball was in danger since men were being drafted for war. In the same way women stepped up to work men's factory jobs, they did the same for baseball. The film focuses on sisters Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and...

When it came to its box office performance, Tank Girl was definitely a disappointment. The 1995 sci-fi action film, based on a British comic book, pulled in only $4 million domestically and $2 million overseas, a far cry from matching the film’s $25 million budget. However, the film’s been reassessed as being ahead of its time, and now it’s developed a sizeable cult following, based in part upon the movie’s decidedly feminist themes. Tank Girl starred Lori Petty in the title role, and the shoot was a particularly memorable one for her, even though it definitely wasn’t easy. In fact, at the time of the movie’s release, Petty said it was easily the most difficult thing she’d done.(Click on the media bar below to hear Lori Petty) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Lori_Prtty_Tank_Girl.mp3

It's all too easy to miss your big chance in Hollywood, whether it's by ending up in a flop through no fault of your own or missing the wrong phone call. It's a career tragedy that can happen to anyone, and it creates agonizing memories for stars still at the top of their careers. Just ask Bill Murphy about the time he did pick up his phone and wound up with a gig in "Garfield." That involved a mix-up over last names but it goes to show that anything can happen. To anyone.
The good news? Not every movie madness mixup ends in disaster. One star's missed call might be another's golden hour. A tragedy behind the scenes can create an opportunity for a fresh and far better take on a character. Science fiction definitely isn't exempt from Hollywood chaos, and in the case of some of our favorite movies,...
