Johnny Depp was once one of Hollywood's biggest and most versatile stars, appearing in both blockbusters and true-crime dramas. The American actor gained global superstardom for portraying the eccentric Captain Jack Sparrow in five Pirates of the Caribbean movies from 2006 to 2017, earning an Academy Award nomination for the first film, The Curse of the Black Pearl. In the following years, Depp earned additional nominations for Finding Neverland and Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Over his career, Depp has also appeared in an array of crime dramas, including 2001's Blow, playing a real American cocaine kingpin, George Jung, who was connected to Pablo Escobar. In 2009, Depp starred in Michael Mann's Public Enemies as the notorious bank robber John Dillinger, chronicling his final years. In 2015's Black Mass, Depp played American mobster Whitey Bulger. Paramount's Jack Ryan reboot movie, The Sum of All Fears, is climbing the Netflix charts and currently sits at number four. The film was meant to relaunch the Ryanverse with a younger cast, and featured Ben Affleck as the famous CIA analyst. The cast was stacked, with Morgan Freeman as Dci William Cabot, James Cromwell as President Fowler, Phillip Baker Hall as Defense Secretary Becker, and Liev Schrieber as fan-favorite John Clark.
Phil Alden Robinson (The Field of Dreams) directed The Sum of All Fears, and it opened on May 31, 2002, not long after 9/11. The film follows Ryan as he tries to stop nuclear war from breaking out between the United States and Russia, following a nuclear bomb going off in Baltimore. The villains are re-worked into Austrian neo-Nazis who want war to happen so they can create a new fascist state in Europe.

The highly acclaimed 1990s American police drama Homicide: Life On The Street will finally be available to stream in the UK thanks to Sky.
While late and much missed Andre Braugher may have won legions of fans in recent years for his pitch-perfect comic performance as Sgt Raymond Holt in sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, it is his towering performance as Detective Frank Pendleton in Homicide: Life On The Street that he made his name.
The show was created by Paul Attanasio, who went on to become Oscar nominated for writing the screenplays for Robert Redford’s Quiz Show and Mike Newell’s Donnie Brasco. Attanasio based the show on the book Homicide: A Year On The Killing Streets by journalist David Simon, who himself went on to have huge success in television after creating The Wire.

You guys really seem to be digging on Michael Crichton huh? Well let’s look at what almost stopped his adaptations from happening. After a heck of a run from his adaptations both good and mediocre, Sphere would be a big enough bomb that it would follow with two straight sub-par adaptations before a quiet death of his worked being put on the big screen. The movie should have been a no doubt success with stars like Dustin Hoffman, Sam Jackson, Sharon Stone and a more than capable, Oscar winning, director in Barry Levinson. What we would end up with is one of the biggest bombs of the late 90s and a movie that is derided or outright forgotten from the annals of 90s cinema. Was it the cast, the story, or the general public being over Chricton things that didn’t have dinosaurs in it that was the culprit.

Sky has taken all seven seasons of the remastered Homicide: Life on the Street.
The iconic cop show adapted from The Wire creator David Simon’s book was recently remastered in HD and Uhd by NBC and Fremantle, launching on Peacock last year and comprising a major part of Fremantle’s MIPCOM catalog.
Sky, which is in the same stable as Peacock, has now swooped in to strike a major UK deal for its channels and Now streaming service, coming a few days after the pay-tv giant bought Emmy-winner Hacks.
Starring Andre Braugher, Yaphet Kotto and Melissa Leo, Homicide ran for more than 100 episodes and seven seasons in the 1990s and is considered by many to be a precursor to Simon’s The Wire. Adapted from Simon’s Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, the series from Oscar nominee Paul Attanasio followed fictional Baltimore detectives, some of whom turned to violence.

When it comes to mob movies, certain titles immediately spring to mind, such as The Godfather, Goodfellas, Casino, or Once Upon a Time in America. But there's another gem in the genre that deserves a spot on this list– 1997's Donnie Brasco, where Al Pacino delivers one of his most nuanced performances as real-life mobster Benjamin "Lefty" Ruggiero. The film, which recently marked its 27th anniversary, offers a grittier, more intimate look at the day-to-day life of organized crime as opposed to its more bombastic counterparts.
Unlike the glamorous portrayal of mob life often seen in Hollywood, Donnie Brasco peels back the layers to reveal a world of small-time hustlers and aging wise guys just trying to get by. At its heart is Pacino's Lefty, a world-weary foot soldier who takes Johnny Depp's undercover FBI agent under his wing, unwittingly setting the stage for his own downfall.

When Homicide: Life on the Street first aired more than 30 years ago, people didn't know what to make of it. With its jarring camera style and thought-provoking dialogue-heavy narrative, the show went against the grain of typical police dramas. Developed by Paul Attanasio and based on David Simon's revealing 1991 book, Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, the series brought to life Simon's gritty experiences as a reporter embedded with a Baltimore homicide squad. With the help of Baltimore native Barry Levinson and starring Kyle Secor and the late duo of Yaphet Kotto and Andre Braugher in career-defining roles, the show launched in January 1993. It was broadcast on NBC for seven seasons, culminating in 122 episodes and an extended feature, Homicide: The Movie.

The CBS series Bull offered a unique take on the familiar legal procedural drama. Rather than focusing on the lawyers or judges, the show centers the story on the people who really decide the outcome of a trial the jury. Bull starred NCIS' Michael Weatherly as Dr. Jason Bull, a psychologist who uses his expertise to sway the members of the jury. With the consulting firm the Trial Analysis Corporation, Bull led a crack team of experts in various fields, including the savvy hacker, Cable McCrory, played by Annabelle Attanasio, who abruptly left the show.
Cable was a major character in Bull seasons 1 and 2. A few fictional television characters will be remembered forever, and John Munch counts among them. Played by Richard Belzer and based on Jay Landsman (a central figure in David Simon's 1991 true crime novel Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets), the character first appeared in the procedural Homicide: Life on the Street, where his kindness and belief in conspiracy theories made him stand out from his gruff, tough-as-nails colleagues. When the show was canceled, Munch was quickly saved from the sinking ship and thrown into the robust lifeboat that was Law & Order: Svu. After all, he was too valuable to drown with the rest.
Figuratively, Munch never just stuck to his jurisdiction. The lawman appeared in various shows across different networks, suggesting that these productions all existed in the same universe. These include The X-Files, Arrested Development, The Wire, The Beat, American Dad, and 30 Rock. Munch...

Demi Moore is getting her due thanks to Metrograph.
The “Substance” actress and Hollywood icon is being honored by Metrograph with a five-film series of Moore’s most beloved features, as curated by the theater. Titled “We Want Moore,” the mini festival begins September 13.
“The rapturous reception of Demi Moore’s performance in Coralie Fargeat’s ‘The Substance’ at this year’s Cannes Film Festival seems to have reminded many people that the New Mexico-born actress is a bona fide movie star — not just in terms of box office receipts and magazine cover shoots, but in her seemingly effortless ability to command the screen every time she walks into frame,” the Metrograph press statement reads. “In ‘We Want Moore,’ we’ve brought together some other timely reminders.”
Selected films screening in 35mm include Moore’s iconic turns in “Ghost,” “Indecent Proposal,” and “Striptease,” which Moore recently told Variety was one of her most under-appreciated performances.

Suits is one of the best and most popular legal dramas that managed to make the profession of lawyer cool again. Created by Aaron Korsh, the USA Network series follows Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), who has a photographic memory and joins Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) at a prestigious law firm. The only problem with that is Mike didn’t actually go to law school and he doesn’t have a degree about which he has to lie to everyone. Suits ran for 9 brilliant seasons and ended its run in 2019. So, if you loved the witty banter, high stakes, and compelling characters in Suits here are some similar brilliant shows you should check out next.

Sometimes it’s hard to revisit a favorite TV series you haven’t seen in decades. Will the show hold up or be hopelessly dated? Happily, NBC’s groundbreaking 1993-98 police series “Homicide: Life on the Street” is just as brilliant as it was three decades Peacock recently dropped all seven seasons as well as 2000’s “Homicide: The Movie.”.
As NPR noted: “It was a cop show without gun battles or car chases, with a bracing shot of street-level realism; film mostly in Baltimore. ‘Homicide’ presented stuff you just didn’t see on network television back then: shaky, kinetic camera work, working stiff police detectives cracking jokes at gruesome murder scenes…serialized stories that arced over several episodes, heart-rending killings that never get solved.”
The series, which was set in the fictional Baltimore Police Department Unit, was based on David Simon’s (“The Wire”) 1991 book “Homicide: A Year in the Life of the Killing Streets.

Before The Shield and The Wire, there was Homicide: Life on the Street. The NBC crime drama is widely considered among genre fans to be the cream of the crop, but it never reached the level of success it deserved. Now a whopping 31 years after the first episode aired in 1993, audiences old and new are finally able to stream the series on Peacock and understand why it still matters. Even with how television and the world have evolved since the 1990s, Homicide is still an elite piece of TV drama.

The hit crime drama series Homicide: Life on the Street will soon finally start streaming. The news comes 25 years after the series ended its run in 1999.
The show, which ran for seven seasons from 1993 to 1999, was based on the book by David Simon. On social media, Simon revealed that NBC had finally managed to clear the rights to the music used for Homicide: Life on the Street, the apparent hurdle that has been holding up the show from getting a proper streaming release. While a specific platform has not yet been named, it seems that NBCUniversal's Peacock would be the most likely home.

Andre Braugher, the dynamic actor known for his outstanding work on such shows as Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, has died. He was 61.
Braugher died Monday after a brief illness, his longtime rep Jennifer Allen told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death turned out to be lung cancer.
Braugher starred as master interrogator Det. Frank Pembleton on NBC’s Homicide: Life on the Street for the first six seasons of the show’s acclaimed 1993-99 run, then played another cop, Capt. Raymond Holt — this time against type and for laughs — on the 2013-21 Fox-nbc sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
He won his first Emmy in 1998 for outstanding lead actor in a drama series for Homicide after a season that featured one of its most memorable episodes, “Subway.” That was a two-hander in which Pembleton tries to unearth whether a man (Vincent D’Onofrio) pinned between a Baltimore subway train...

Say goodbye to Luca Guadagnino’s “Scarface” movie.
The “Challengers” and “Call Me by Your Name” director confirmed to The Hindu that he is no longer attached to helm a reinterpretation of the iconic mobster movie. Guadagnino was first attached to “Scarface” in 2020, with Ethan and Joel Coen writing the script.
“I’m not working on ‘Scarface’ anymore,” Guadagnino told the outlet in November 2023.
He later added of adaptations in general, “For me, when approaching any book adaptation or remake, it’s about understanding what the story carries within itself that goes beyond the form of the original work. So that you can tell that story from a completely different perspective. Whether it’s fresh or not, I cannot tell. But it’s different.”
Howard Hawks’ 1932 original “Scarface,” based on Armitage Trail’s novel, was later iconically remade in 1983 by director Brian De Palma using a script by Oliver Stone...

The 1997 mob movie, Donnie Brasco, celebrates its 25th anniversary this week. This is almost as long as the real-life title character has been on the run with a half-a-million-dollar contract on his head. Johnny Depp plays Joe Pistone in the movie, an undercover federal cop codenamed “Donnie Brasco.” He gets so deep into the wheels of the Brooklyn operations of the Bonanno crime family that he almost becomes a made man. Donnie is one hit away from getting straightened out, joining the official rank and file of the organization, when the FBI pulls him in from the case. The mere notion that such an embarrassing breach could occur got the Bonannos kicked out of the Five Family ruling hierarchy. It turned out to be fortunate timing when the “Mafia Commission” went down in a federal rap, but at the time, forget about it.

Sphere may not rank amongst elite properties sprung from the deep creative well of Michael Crichton, but the property, defined by the late author’s novel and subsequent adaptation movie, is getting revived as a peak television offering from HBO, which, of course, already happens to house a prominent Crichton adaptation series in Westworld.
HBO revealed that it is developing a Sphere series, for which it has appointed Denise Thé to serve as showrunner, writer and executive producer, bringing recent experience as an executive producer from this past spring’s third season run of Westworld. The series will adapt Crichton’s 1987 novel, which manifested as a sub-maritime sci-fi thriller about a team of scientists who discover a 300-year-old alien spacecraft at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Upon making the deep-sea excursion to explore the technologically advanced vessel, they come upon what seems to be an alien intelligence, called Harry,...

They say any story worth telling is worth telling twice. It is an adage Hollywood heartily believes in, with an increasing number of new films being adaptations of existing IP, from comics to games, to older films. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, the mastermind behind previous remakes including Suspiria and A Bigger Splash, inspired by La Piscine, recently revealed to Variety the intention behind his next film, which is going to be a remake of Scarface.
"People claim that I do only remakes, but the truth of the matter is cinema has been remaking itself throughout its existence. It's not because it's a lazy way of not being able to find original stories. It's alway about looking at what certain stories say about our times."
When people think of Scarface, they're usually thinking of the 1983 film starring Al Pacino playing the role of Cuban refugee Tony Montana, whose violent and colorful...
