What’s that? You’ve never heard of Poochinski, the show starring a murdered cop who is resurrected as a crime-solving bulldog voiced by the great Peter Boyle? Well, perhaps that’s because they only made one episode before some executive thought this brilliant TV series just might not find an audience.
Honestly, when stacked against some of the other bizarre pilots that were never picked up, Poochinski starts to look like a pretty good idea. Who wouldn’t love a police procedural starring a detective dog that’s been resurrected from the dead, anyway? Here’s a look at some of the other pilots that, for better or worse, were just too weird to make into a full series…

If you grew up in the early 2000s, chances are you spent many evenings with Ray Barone (Ray Romano) and his eccentric family in the hit comedy series "Everybody Loves Raymond." For good reason. This critically acclaimed sitcom about Ray, a Newsday sportswriter, dealing with his put-upon wife Debra (Patricia Heaton), bickering parents (Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts), and neurotic brother Robert (Brad Garrett), perfectly captures the working-class family and all its quirks, resulting in a heartfelt, often hilarious look at everyday life.
Running from 1997 to 2005, "Raymond" won 15 Primetime Emmys, garnered critical acclaim, and averaged over 20 million viewers during its peak. More impressively, the cast became household names, forever tied to their characters. The tributes continue to pour in following the shocking death of Academy Award winner Gene Hackman. While the actor was well-known for his intense, often terrifying performances in the likes of Unforgiven and The French Connection, he was not averse to providing the laughs too, starring in seminal director Mel Brooks’ beloved 1974 horror comedy Young Frankenstein.
Brooks has now paid tribute to the actor, taking to X/Twitter to reflect on their time working together, describing Hackman as “perfect” for the role of the blind hermit, Harold.
“I was privileged to know Gene Hackman because he played tennis with another Gene—Gene Wilder. And that Gene told him about a little role called The Blind Hermit in our movie Young Frankenstein. He said, “Do you think Mel would let me play it? I’ve always wanted to do a comedy.” Needless to say, I was over the moon and he was perfect.

Although Gene Hackman‘s legacy includes a myriad of masterful dramatic performances, he also managed to elicit some laughs during his storied career.
Following the 2x Oscar winner’s death at age 95, writer-director Mel Brooks reminisced about working with Hackman on his Academy Award-nominated 1974 comedy classic Young Frankenstein.

The X-Files is a mystery in its own right because not only did it manage to pioneer a new sub-genre of sci-fi in the early '90s, but it also managed to collect an abundance of new fans every day. The show centers around Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, two FBI agents who spend their days uncovering the dark underbelly of the supernatural and strive to bring it to light. Thus, it's easy to say that this show has everything: monsters, aliens, and a ferocious slow-burn romance plot.
Even when the show returned in 2016 for two limited seasons, fans were impressed with how easily David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson were able to slip into their roles again. As such, fans, new and old, often rave about their favorite episodes and discuss why The X-Files had such a big impact on popular culture. However, audiences would be lying if they said...

Family sitcom The Middle was a massive hit for ABC throughout its nine-season run. Despite the show experiencing a resurgence in popularity, Patricia Heaton, who played matriarch Frances Heck, recently shot down the possibility of a reboot.
"The way they wrapped it up, where we got to flash-forward in the lives of the Heck family and see where they all ended up, it was so beautiful, and I think people have such a good feeling about the show," she told Yahoo! Entertainment. "The Middle is having such a resurgence on TikTok, of all places, that kids are rediscovering or discovering it for the first time. It's a beautiful thing."

Comic books have inspired some of the most successful movies of the 21st century, from The Dark Knight and Avengers: Endgame to the Fox X-Men and Sony Spider-Man films. Although these films have raked in billions of dollars for Hollywood, it took a while for the medium to earn its respect. The 1990s stand out as a particularly unique and divisive decade for comic adaptations, with superheroes slowly gaining steam despite a campy, low-budget treatment.
While the 1990s saw some comic book disasters, like Steel and Spawn, it also produced some entertaining and faithful adaptations of classic comics, from superheroes to science fiction movies. Not only was the decade a boom for the comic book industry behind the scenes, but it also spawned a variety of enduring films, even if some weren't well-received at the time. Everybody Loves Raymond is forever. You could turn it on today, watch Ray complain, and it still hits. Timeless. The show dropped on September 13, 1996, and instantly became a classic. For nine years, it had us laughing and crying. With its penetrating humor and relatable chaos, it snagged 15 Emmys before ending in 2005.
The Barone family? Messy, dysfunctional, and always up in each other’s business. That’s why we loved them. Ray dodging his parents, Debra fighting for space, Robert being, well, Robert. It gave us classic moments we’re still quoting.

Running from 1996-2005, CBS' Everybody Loves Raymond was one of the most popular and best sitcoms of its era. It may have been an ensemble cast, including the likes of Patricia Heaton, Brad Garrett, Peter Boyle, and Doris Roberts as Ray Barones' wild family, but with his name in the title, it was Ray Romano who was the lead. Those who watched might have loved the show, but we didn't always love Raymond himself. So many episodes of Everybody Loves Raymond saw Ray getting himself in trouble because of his own selfishness in how he treated his wife and the rest of his family. One of the show's best episodes even had Ray tape over his and Debra's wedding tape with a football game. That might sound like a well-worn sitcom plot device, but it actually happened to a writer for Everybody Loves Raymond, when he taped over his wedding...

Many animation studios have an amusing tendency for connecting their films together. Pixar, for example, has the ever-popular "Pixar Theory" that sets every major film on a cohesive timeline, while Disney inserts fun easter eggs from their previous movies into every new production. The anime community's beloved Studio Ghibli has formed a bridge between two of its tragically underrated movies (Whisper of the Heart and The Cat Returns) by using a pair of minor yet important characters: Baron and Muta.
Whisper of the Heart and The Cat Returns were both released in July just seven years apart, with the former directed by the late Yoshifumi Kondo (whom many claim could have carried Ghibli into a new era) in 1995 and the latter by Hiroyuki Morita in 2002. Despite having different directors and telling vastly different stories, the characters of Baron and Muta are both recognizable figures that create a significant connection between the two timeless films.

Mel Brooks, who directed Teri Garr in the iconic 1974 comedy Young Frankenstein, remembered the actor upon her death Tuesday, recalling Garr’s talent and spirit.
“So very sorry to hear about Teri Garr’s passing,” Brooks said in a statement on social media. “She was so talented and so funny. Her humor and lively spirit made the Young Frankenstein set a pleasure to work on. Her ‘German’ accent had us all in stitches! She will be greatly missed.”
Garr was a standout in a film filled with standouts. She played Inga, the German lab assistant to the visiting American Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, played of course by Gene Wilder. As the seemingly ditsy — “seemingly” being the operative word — Inga, Garr employed a rather ersatz German accent, hence Brooks’ quote marks around the word.

We’re sad to report that Teri Garr, the gifted actress who starred in such classic films as Tootsie, Young Frankenstein, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, has passed away at 79. According to her publicist, Heidi Schaeffer, Garr died of multiple sclerosis after struggling with health issues in recent years. She passed away on Tuesday, leaving a legacy behind that shines like she did on the silver screen.
Garr began her Hollywood journey with minor roles in Elvis Presley movies during the 1960s. She appeared in films like Viva Las Vegas and Roustabout and also in Pajama Party, which starred Annette Funicello, Tommy Kirk, and Elsa Lanchester. Garr appears in various classic TV series, such as Star Trek, Batman, That Girl, Mayberry, It Takes a Thief, Room 222, and more. Regardless of her role, Garr stood out, destined to climb the Hollywood ladder with show-stopping performances in major motion pictures around the corner.

While Monster's Ball lives long in the memory of movie lovers for helping Halle Berry earn a historic Academy Award victory, it's also remembered for one Nsfw moment. Amid decades of rumors, Berry sets the record straight on her memorable sex scene involving co-star Billy Bob Thornton.
Speaking on the Armchair Expert podcast, Berry opened up on her intimate scene with Thornton midway through Monster's Ball, which continues to prompt questions about whether the intercourse between their characters was real. The X-Men franchise alum insisted the "urban legend" has "plagued" her and Thornton for years and believes the scene was so well acted that it tricked many movie lovers. Theres an urban legend that we really were f---ingIve heard it, and its just not true, she said. Its secretly driven me mad all these years. Like any movie genre, the Western has its fair share of popular subgenres. Well-known Western subgenres include neo-Westerns, revisionist Westerns, and spaghetti Westerns. More obscure Western subgenres include acid Westerns, meat pie Westerns, and weird Westerns. Influential film critic Pauline Kael coined the term acid Western in 1971 in her review of Alejandro Jodorowsky's El Topo.
In the mid-1990s, Jonathan Rosenbaum expanded upon the definition of acid Westerns. He noted acid Westerns are a type of revisionist Western that reflected the counterculture ideologies of the 1960s and 1970s. Acid Westerns have a hallucinogenic quality that is often aided by surrealist imagery. Rosenbaum also stated that in traditional Westerns, a character's journey West resulted in freedom and prosperity. In Acid Westerns, Rosenbaum argued a character's journey is a march toward death. Clint Eastwood's High Plains Drifter, Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man, and Sam Peckinpah's Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid...

Sitcoms are a key part of primetime television, inviting viewers to join in on the fun and build strong bonds with the wider cast. The most successful sitcoms often have a quirky ensemble cast, placing viewers in a fictional family or workplace. Thus, this allows certain shows to create immense romance plots that truly warm the audience's hearts.
Although some sitcom couples are undoubtedly iconic, other couples are doomed from the start. Yet, some shows are determined to make these pairings work, even if fans are completely against them. As such, it seems that fans will never be able to escape an unsuitable sitcom couple.

Everybody Loves Raymond was one of the most popular sitcoms of the late 90s and early 2000s. Ray Romano's Ray Barone might have been a bit of a selfish dolt, but still we tuned in every week to see what trouble he'd get himself into, or to watch the chaos between his family, from his loving but put upon wife, Debra (Patricia Heaton), his good guy of a brother Robert (Brad Garrett), and his nearly insane parents, Frank (Peter Boyle) and Marie (Doris Roberts).

One of the best things to happen in Hollywood in recent years is that Michael Keaton’s career got a major second wind (but don’t call it a comeback) after a somewhat lower-key period. While the extent of Keaton’s career downturn pre-Birdman has indeed been overblown (let’s not forget he was still a big enough star to play the villain in the RoboCop reboot months before Birdman came out), it can’t be denied that Alejandro González Iñárritu’s movie gave him a major boost. Since then, he’s appeared In some amazing films, including Spotlight, The Founder, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and The Trial of the Chicago 7. He has also done great TV work, such as the exceptional limited series Dopesick.
However, Keaton’s pre- and post-Beetlejuice/Batman career tends to be overlooked when discussing his filmography, which is a shame as he was already a...

Halle Berry remains a trailblazer in Hollywood thanks to her groundbreaking Best Actress Academy Award win in 2002. However, well over two decades later, Berry can't believe she's still the only Black woman to ever walk away with the prestigious honor.
Speaking with Marie Claire, Berry admitted she's "saddened" she remains the only Black woman to take home the Best Actress Oscar, winning the award for her performance in Monster's Ball. The Hollywood legend believes there were rightful winners since her historic triumph, including Andra Day's showing in The United States vs. Billie Holiday and Viola Davis in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. However, Berry is "eternally miffed" that she's the lone actor to achieve the feat. I'm still eternally miffed that no Black woman has come behind me for that best actress Oscar, I'm continually saddened by that year after year. Knowing that skilled gunmen are on the way, and without anyone to turn to, O’Niel waits to face the men alone.

Outland was Sean Connery's attempt at High Noon in outer space, but it failed to meet the high standard set by the classic Western film. Initially a box office failure, Outland has gained a cult classic status years later, known for its impressive visual effects. Despite mixed critical reception, Sean Connery's role as Marshal William T. O'Niel in Outland remains memorable to fans of the sci-fi thriller.

Sci-fi Westerns can be a hit or miss, with Outland standing out despite plot holes and similarities to High Noon. Sean Connery shines in the role of Marshall O'Niel, embodying the lone hero archetype in a space setting. While Outland has gained a cult following, it faces criticism for plot holes and questionable science, challenging its appeal.
The mashing up of movie genres can be a viewer's delight or an awful concoction, like oil and water. Both the sci-fi and Western genres have a dedicated fanbase that usually is pretty protective and quick to point out faults that go against the grain in a way that takes away from the genre. This is the reason why sci-fi Westerns have always been tricky to nail; for every Mad Max: Fury Road, a Wild Wild West is waiting to offset fans' opinions of this particular mash-up.

Fans of ABC’s Abbott Elementary were thrilled to hear that a season 4 episode will feature a crossover event. Social media users immediately put on their thinking caps and speculated as to who would be making an appearance in the halls of the downtrodden Philadelphia grade school. Knowing the show is aired on a network owned by Disney, you can expect it to be someone in the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (here’s hoping Carmy or Syd from The Bear travel to Philly *fingers crossed*)
The TV crossover used to be a great way for networks to promote two shows at the same time, but as the streaming era took over the tendency to apply this advertising method has dwindled. We thought it would be a great time to look back on the TV crossovers that only small screen purists will remember. Some of these crossovers are old enough that even...

Outland's stunning special effects pushed boundaries and were way ahead of their time in 1981. The production relied heavily on physical constructs, precise lighting, and camera work to create immersive environments on screen. Outland utilized optical compositing techniques to layer elements seamlessly, integrating live-action footage with background plates.

The last few years have not been kind to Kevin Costner. After months of controversy surrounding his Yellowstone exit, the official studio statement clashed against his reputation, turning the entire fanbase against the actor. His attempt at redressal failed badly, especially considering his initial silence on the issue, which most took as a sign of a guilty conscience.

Ya know that feeling when you watch something dumb, and even though you know it’s stupid, you can’t help but laugh and enjoy yourself? The 1980s are full of comedies like that. Yeah, we know they’re dumb and not especially clever, but whatever, man, every now and then, you’re in a bad mood, and you want to turn your brain off. That’s why they made seven Police Academy movies. No one thought they were good, but we watched them anyway because they were stupid in a pleasing way.

Donald Sutherland, the tall, lean and long-faced Canadian actor who became a countercultural icon with such films as “The Dirty Dozen,” “Mash,” “Klute” and “Don’t Look Now,” and who subsequently enjoyed a prolific and wide-ranging career in films including “Ordinary People,” “Without Limits” and the “Hunger Games” films, died Thursday in Miami after a long illness, CAA confirmed. Comedian Ray Romano found big success as the star of the hit sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, though he suggests that it's actually the love for his co-stars that drew people to the series. In particular, Peter Boyle was one co-star that Romano has credited as one of the reasons the sitcom worked so well.
Per Remind, Romano said Boyle portraying his father, Frank Barone, was "one of the main reasons it worked." He also admitted to feeling apprehensive about how well Boyle would do in the role at first, ultimately casting Boyle based on his past accomplishments as an actor. After giving praise to Boyle for how well he did with Frank, Romano also gave credit to some of the other cast members, noting how Brad Garrett played a big part in shaping out the Robert Barone character as well.

The one fatal mistake that most TV shows make is using TV cameos gratuitously. If the cameo doesn't mean something to the audience and the characters in the show, it's pointless, and little more than a random Stan Lee Appears gag.
On the other hand, too many shows have fallen into the trap of celebrity worship with their cameos.
Having cast members gawk and gape at their celebrity crush as if to reinforce the celebrity's prestige while doing nothing for the universe we enjoy is a waste of talent.
For this list of the top TV cameos worth celebrating, we will focus on iconic cameo appearances that gave the show some unforgettable moments that made TV history.

From the classic Universal horror films to the hulking behemoths of the kaiju genre, monster movies have scared audiences and spawned imitators for generations. Some of these interpretations have been genuinely terrifying, but more often than not, they are cheesy knock-offs designed to cash in on their popularity. Then, there have been some truly weird versions of classic monsters that defy explanation.
Weird is a very broad term, but in the case of movie monsters, it means unconventional, whether it be comedic, twisted, or just plain bizarre. Series creator Chris Carter called out Fox executives that almost thwarted his casting of Anderson in the 1993 series. Carter told Inverse that they wondered “where’s the sex appeal?” when it came to Anderson in the role of FBI Special Agent Dana Scully. It is a bit unclear there if Carter was referring to the studio, the network, or both. She ended up testing for both.
“I wanted to take her before the studio and the network,” Carter said. “Even though Gillian’s beautiful, she wasn’t their idea of sexy. First, because they didn’t understand what I was trying to do with the show. And she was an unknown, so that never helps.”
Anderson’s “X-Files” co-star David Duchovny, who played FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder, was also a hard sell, according to Carter.
