Ryan Gosling had a bold request on The Notebook set: “I can’t do it with her.” It turns out that the romance that made audiences swoon wasn’t so dreamy. Director Nick Cassavetes alluded that Gosling and Rachel McAdams clashed hard while filming the 2004 drama.
Cassavetes recalled the tension in an interview with VH1 (via EW), admitting, “Maybe I’m not supposed to tell this story, but they were really not getting along one day on set. Really not,” Cassavetes says. “And Ryan came to me, and there are 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, ‘Nick come here.’ He’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, ‘Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off-camera with me?’ ‘I said, ‘What?’”

Prime Video's Road House reboot was a major success for the streaming platform, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Dalton, a retired UFC fighter who becomes a bouncer in the Florida Keys. The 2024 film was Prime Video's most-watched movie debut to date, as audiences were obsessed with the new take on the Patrick Swayze-led action cult classic. Thanks to its tremendous success, a sequel was quickly greenlit and Road House 2 has finally gotten an update, thanks to one of its (potentially) returning stars.
During an interview with Variety, Lukas Gage revealed that development has begun on Road House 2. Gage played Billy in Road House, who worked at the Floridian roadhouse that employed Dalton, and the pair quickly became friends. Gage isn't confirmed to star in the sequel — only Jake Gyllenhaal has been officially cast so far — but the actor hopes he will return. As for Road House 2's lack of updates,...

Ah, "The Notebook," the go-to romantic drama for date nights and Valentine's Day. This 2004 tear-jerker about good-looking people dealing with love and heartbreak hits all the feels, right down to its surprising and emotional twist ending.
Starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, the story follows the love affair between Noah (Gosling) and Allie (McAdams) as told by an elderly man (James Garner) to a female patient (Gena Rowlands) in the present. Noah, you see, is a poor lumber mill worker, while Allie is rich beyond belief. Naturally, her parents object, then a war whisks Noah away long enough for Allie to become engaged with another man (James Marsden). Will our star-crossed lovers overcome the many obstacles and end happily ever after, or will life pull them apart?
Look, "The Notebook," as directed by Nick Cassavetes, based on the novel by perennial tear-jerk king Nicholas Sparks, doesn't earn points for originality...

There are few directors with as eclectic of a career as Nick Cassavetes. From The Notebook to God Is A Bullet, the type of movie he makes can span quite a wide range. He switches back and forth between darker stories and sappy romances so you never quite know what you’re going to get with him. His latest film, Marked Men: Rule + Shaw (which I can’t help but constantly call it Marked Men: Hobbs and Shaw) takes the latter approach and puts the book series Marked Men in his sights. The adaptation really wasn’t for me (check out my review Here) but I’m sure there are teen girls who will love the melodrama on display here.

Plot: Shaw has loved Rule since she saw him, but Rule doesn’t see her as a suitable match, but a night of drinking and secrets leads them to question if they can be together without ruining their relationship…or each other.
Review: The theater experience has struggled over the years, with mid-budget comedies and romance films being the biggest victims. The solution to this has been to release the films for a limited time in theaters via a company like Fathom or Icon Events. And it seems to give films that would usually be relegated to streaming, a chance at success in theaters. Marked Men: Rule + Shaw is probably a film that should have just stayed streaming as it’s a sadly hollow experience.

Romance is one of the most prolific genres, in literature, adaptations, music, and original stories. However, there's something undeniably timeless about Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams' 21-year-old drama, The Notebook.
The movie came out in 2004, a year that was great for Rachel McAdams, as she premiered the Nicholas Sparks adaptation, alongside Gosling, and also the iconic Mean Girls. The movie tells the story of Noah and Allie's romance over the years, including their beginning as teenagers, choosing each other years later, growing old together, and dealing with a heartbreaking disease. Just in time for Valentine's Day, The Notebook will be available to stream on Hulu starting Feb. 1.

The 1980s were a genre-defining era for action movies. Countless iconic action franchises were started in this decade; Top Gun, Road House, The Terminator, as well as a handful of 007 movies, among many other instant classics. All of these films feature awesome heroes, intense conflicts, and, of course, plenty of high-energy action sequences.
Of course, not every '80s action flick received the same level of recognition as Die Hard or Lethal Weapon. However, even though they may not have broken box office records or won major awards, plenty of these films are still tons of fun to watch. The plots may be a bit cheesy, and the action may be over-the-top, but sometimes that's exactly the kind of movie audiences want to see. When looking for a new movie to watch, these '80s action movies promise to include all the fun, cheesy action audiences are dying to see.

Terrence Howard spoke about Robert Downey Jr.’s role the Iron Man drama (Photo Credit – Instagram)
According to Howard, the Marvel Studios cash cow didn’t come cheap for everyone involved.
Let’s rewind to the early days of Iron Man. Marvel had their sights set on a different star for the role of Tony Stark. But guess what? Downey Jr. swooped in after the casting team had made their picks, battling the studio’s initial reluctance. Still, he made the cut, and the rest is cinematic history.
Now, Howard’s side of the story is where things get juicy. As the original Rhodey, Howard was making bank—reportedly between $3.5 and $4.5 million, making him the highest-paid star of the film. The deal came with a promise: if Iron Man 2 happened, he’d be back as War Machine with an extra $5 million on the table. Sounds sweet, right?

At this stage, it seems as though Denzel Washington can do no wrong. A peerless actress was Gena Rowlands. She was also the muse of actor and rightly renowned avant-garde filmmaker John Cassavetes (†1989), to whom she was married from 1954. It was an inspiration that was mutual. A number of great Cassavetes films are unthinkable without Rowlands. They married and had three children. Children who would also become filmmakers themselves. She started acting young and continued to act into old age, consequently having a career that spanned some seventy years from her first roles in films such as Shadows to later films such as 2004's The Notebook directed by her son Nick Cassavetes in which she plays a woman with dementia, the condition that would also affect her in old age. You could say she...

In an interview with People magazine about her new book “By Any Other Name,” author Jodi Picoult revealed her inspiration for the novel came from the “terrible experience” she had with the 2009 film adaptation of “My Sister’s Keeper.”
“It kind of goes back to when I had a really terrible experience turning ‘My Sister’s Keeper’ into a film,” Picoult said. “It took me a long time to kind of wrap my head around the fact that they didn’t ruin my book. My book is still there. And anyone who reads my book is still getting the story that I intended.”
“My Sister’s Keeper,” starring Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin, sits at a 47% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. However, former Variety film critic Justin Chang gave a glowing review upon its release in 2009, writing, “Unsubtle, uneven and undeniably effective, this take-no-prisoners cancer weepie poses a fascinating moral quandary — a girl...

In a tangential sense, no filmmaker working from 1960 onward would have gotten anywhere without the influence of John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands. But in a very real sense, Martin Scorsese has said he would have likely left film entirely had it not been for the support Cassavetes and Rowlands showed toward him early on in his career. Following the death of Rowlands last week, Scorsese released a statement paying tribute to her.
“Up there onscreen, there was no one else quite like her. That’s the kind of observation that’s often made about people after they’re gone, but in Gena’s case it happens to be true,” Scorsese wrote. “She had an extremely unusual combination of qualities. Her talent, which was extraordinary. Her bravery and commitment to her art formn— equally extraordinary. Her presence… this was someone who could hold a room by just walking in and standing there.

The 2004 romantic drama “The Notebook” pays tribute to filmmaker John Cassavetes through its portrayal of intimate relationships that transcend time. While known for its love story between characters played by actors Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, the film is also deeply connected to John Cassavetes and his wife and frequent collaborator Gena Rowlands.
Rowlands herself appears in “The Notebook” as the older version of the character Allie Calhoun. Her role serves to honor both her acclaimed prior work with Cassavetes as well as his legacy of independent filmmaking focused on authentic emotional depth.
One of Cassavetes’ most renowned films is 1974’s “A Woman Under the Influence,” which earned Rowlands an Oscar nomination for her raw and intimate performance as a housewife struggling with mental illness. Like “The Notebook,” it tackles complex themes of love, family, and the human experience.

Gena Rowlands in Opening Night (1977) John Cassavetes
Two days ago, cinephiles worldwide were met with some sad news, tragic beyond belief. Gena Rowlands died at the age of 94 after a few years battling with dementia, as her son, Nick Cassavetes, had previously revealed to the public. It's a loss that defies comprehension because Rowlands' talent was just the same, a generational marvel whose importance can't be overstated. Cinema, especially independent American film, is what it is today because of her contribution. The same can be said about the art of screen acting, in general. So much so that even those who don't gel with her mercuriality must contend with Rowlands' place in the annals of history.
Even as I loathe to use the term 'undeniable,' Rowlands is the exception to the rule. Consider her undeniable influence on countless artists. Consider the undeniable mark she left on...

In the history of American movies, and, arguably, of movies in general, there has never been a partnership between a husband and wife as consequential as that of director John Cassavetes and actress Gena Rowlands.
Not only did the two make several masterpieces together, among them Faces, A Woman Under the Influence and Opening Night. They managed to create a whole body of deeply personal features — shot completely outside of the studio system and often inside their own family home in the Hollywood Hills — that would usher in the era of what we now call “independent film.”
Surely, there had been some memorable director-actress duos before them, mostly in Europe: Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman, Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina, Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina, Michelangelo Antonioni and Monica Vitti. But in those cases, which definitely yielded their share of masterpieces as well, the director was the auteur and the actress his muse.

Martin Scorsese remembered Gena Rowlands on Thursday as an “extraordinary” actress and celebrated her formative independent film work with John Cassavetes for being “inspirations to generations of filmmakers and actors.”
“There was no one else quite like her,” Scorsese said in a statement to press. “That’s the kind of observation that’s often made about people after they’re gone, but in Gena’s case it happens to be true.”
Rowlands died Wednesday after years of living with Alzheimer’s disease, a condition that her son and “The Notebook” filmmaker Nick Cassavetes only revealed two months prior. While commercially known best for playing the older, coincidentally Alzheimer’s-stricken version of the character played by Rachel McAdams in the 2004 romance, Rowlands will be remembered for her fearless, transformative performances through the 1970s and ’80s, including her Oscar-nominated leading roles in Cassavetes’ “A Woman Under the Influence” and “Gloria.”

Every great screen performance expands the medium in its own way, giving audiences something to respond to, while offering fresh ideas to future actors. A select few can be said to have redefined the craft entirely: Orson Welles in “Citizen Kane,” Marlon Brando in “On the Waterfront,” Toshiro Mifune in “Rashomon” and Gena Rowlands in “A Woman Under the Influence.”
Rowlands died Wednesday at age 94, half a century after “A Woman Under the Influence” premiered at the New York Film Festival in 1974. Rowlands was the last to go from among a tight clique of titans — actors who transformed modern cinema: Peter Falk, Seymour Cassel, Ben Gazzara and, of course, Rowlands’ late husband, actor-director John Cassavetes.
Younger audiences who know Rowlands only as the memory-challenged older woman in “The Notebook” (directed by her son Nick Cassavetes) or for her Emmy-winning turn in “Hysterical Blindness” owe it to themselves to investigate her most important work,...

• Gena Rowlands, star of A Woman Under the Influence and Gloria, dies at 94
‘I was always a Broad! I can’t stand the sight of Milk!” This is Gena Rowlands at her awe-inspiring toughest in John Cassavetes’ extraordinary drama-thriller Gloria from 1980. She is sexy, smart, a match for any man. Rowlands was a strong, passionate heroine in the tradition of Barbara Stanwyck, Bette Davis and Lauren Bacall. In fact, her director-husband John Cassavetes was in some ways Bogart to her Bacall. Rowlands staked a claim to the male prerogative of being sensual, dangerous and damaged; a natural survivor. In Gloria, and also in Woody Allen’s Another Woman (1988), in which she plays a severe philosophy professor, Rowlands wears a belted trenchcoat, the kind that Bogart would wear.

Whenever an actor passes away, the expression "greatest to ever do it" is often tossed around. In the case of four-time Emmy and two-time Golden Globe winner Gena Rowlands, the legendary star of the stage, television, and film with a career spanning nearly seven decades, the expression feels somewhat inadequate. Her presence on screen was unwavering and incomparable, a captivating presence who could express a character's entire life story with the lift of an eyebrow or the lighting of a cigarette. She was the type of performer that actors aspired to be more like, and displayed an authentic sense of vulnerability that few have come close to matching. Her passing was first reported by TMZ. She was 94.
Rowlands was graced with an honorary Oscar in 2015, a year after her final on-screen performance. She had been nominated twice before, and one could easily argue that she should have taken home the statue both times.
