John Boyega, the actor who played Finn in Disney’s “Star Wars” sequel trilogy, recently said that he felt that “Star Wars” limited black actors to the “friend” characters. I do not believe this to be the case. Sure, Disney did do that, but many fans were upset that Boyega’s character wasn’t given a much larger role in the sequel trilogy.
Variety used a headline that indicates Boyega blamed the fans, but that isn’t exactly what he said.
During an interview in “Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Men in Hollywood” on Apple TV+ John Boyega said,
“Lemme tell ya, ‘Star Wars’ always had the vibe of being in the most whitest, elite space. It’s a franchise that’s so white that a Black person existing in [it] was something. You can always tell it’s something when some ‘Star Wars’ fans try to say,...

Often, the most deliciously attention-grabbing element of a film is its major villain, the central antagonist who stands against the hero concocting their own duplicitous schemes of self-gain and greed. Many of cinema’s greatest ever villains have become quintessential icons of the medium, with the likes of Star Wars’s Darth Vader (James Earl Jones & David Prowse) and Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knightstanding among the finest fictional characters of all time.

Despite several iterations of the iconic character on the big screen, Christopher Reeve remains the most synonymous and universally loved as Superman. However, Reeve’s memorable portrayal of the superhero wouldn’t have been possible without the involvement of a Star Wars legend, who had a hand in training the actor.

There's a lot of magic that goes into the art of making movies, but it's rare that all the performers in a movie don't meet before cameras start rolling. Nevertheless, things get complicated on big-budget sets, especially when you factor in Covid-19 restrictions, reshoots, and actors who refuse to work with each other.
With all that in mind, it's not uncommon that some co-stars aren't always on set at the same time during production. A lot of times, pivotal characters never meet in movies, meaning the only opportunities that actors get to interact would be at the table read or during the film's promotional period. Take, for instance, Tom Holland and Tom Hiddleston, whose characters never interact in "Avengers: Infinity War," despite the actors frequently appearing in interviews together.
Surprisingly, for these 12 films we're about to cover, not only was there limited contact between co-stars at times, but some actors...

George Lucas launched the Star Wars franchise with the 1977 space opera film that was later expanded into a trilogy of movies. The franchise’s second installment The Empire Strikes Back remains beloved because of its comparatively darker themes and subject material. It leaves its characters with devastating losses and delivers a twist that changes the trajectory of Luke Skywalker’s arc.

During an interview, Lucas discussed the film’s darker themes, particularly one motif connected to Luke’s character. While the filmmaker was worried the motif would be too dark, he still went ahead with it. Here is the symbolism Lucas intended with the scene where Luke loses his arm and why the iconic Star Wars moment was a cause of concern.

Coming in hot with the hot takes! Controversy ahead!
The commonly accepted wisdom among "Star Wars" fans is that Irvin Kershner's 1980 film "Star Wars: Episode V -- The Empire Strikes Back" is the best film in the "Star Wars" canon. Many appreciate its relatively dour tone and po-faced sense of panic. "Empire" carried over the characters from "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope" and took them more seriously. In George Lucas' original 1977 film, the characters played out as broad archetypes. In "Empire," they were depicted as depressed, struggling, injured, panicked, or standing on the cusp of wisdom. They became deeper and more human.
Also, "Empire" expanded the role of fan-favorite character Darth Vader from a threatening lieutenant into the right-hand man of the Emperor (who was played by Elaine Baker and voiced by Clive Revill in the original version of "Empire" before Ian McDiarmid replaced them both...

"The Big Bang Theory" is one giant ode to nerddom, so it makes sense that over the years the show featured guest stars from the biggest geeky franchises in movies and television. "Star Trek: The Next Generation" star Wil Wheaton even ended up playing a villainous version of himself for a number of episodes, and plenty of other actors also joined in on the fun. No, seriously, there are a ton of "Star Trek" actors that have guest starred on "The Big Bang Theory." But in season 7, it was time for the stars of another big sci-fi franchise to shine when superfan Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) tried to create his own Comic-Con.
In "The Convention Conundrum," Sheldon manages to find the voice of Darth Vader himself: the late, great James Earl Jones, playing himself, as he dines in a local sushi restaurant.

Darth Vader is arguably one of the most memorable characters created by George Lucas for his epic space opera franchise Star Wars. Late director Richard Donner will always be known as the man who created the superhero movie to triumph over all others. Even after more than 25 years, his 1978 Superman is still hailed as the perfect archetype from which future filmmakers draw inspiration.

In one of his last interviews, the man narrated what it was like to direct that movie. Moreover, he also talked about a bold stunt he pulled off, going against all norms to make it happen. And if anything, that stunt speaks of his dedication to his craft, and how his instincts ended up saving the savior of the world himself.

Darth Vader is not only one of the most despicable villains in "Star Wars" (though at least he didn't use the dying screams of Dizonite children to torture people), but also one of the most iconic baddies in all of cinema. He's a character that's instantly recognizable from his silhouette alone; his stiff, expressionless "face" nevertheless offers a rather intense perpetual frown. The guy is just fear incarnated, someone you take a single look at and immediately know they're bad news.
Designing the character wasn't easy, and for "Star Wars" creator George Lucas, the key was how Darth Vader moved and behaved. Sure, the costume did a lot of the work, as did James Earl Jones' fantastic vocal performance. Be that as it may, David Prowse's physical performance was also essential to making the character a huge and scary presence even when he's barely moving.

A good director is one of the most reliable indicators that a movie will be worth watching, but there can also be surprises when a director creates just one truly great movie. It's often the case that a successful movie can be the beginning for a director, and they will go on to create more and more. This isn't always what happens, unfortunately, as there have been plenty of one-hit-wonder directors over the years.
Sometimes, a director simply captures lightning in a bottle for one outstanding movie, but they can't replicate the results on other projects. Other times, their one-hit-wonder status is due to factors beyond their control, like if they don't get given the right opportunities or if their projects keep hitting stumbling blocks. Some classic movies including King Kong, The Empire Strikes Back and Donnie Darko represent the only big hits of their director's careers.

This article contains spoilers for the first two episodes of "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew."
Back in the day, "Star Wars" used to deal with the fear of the unknown quite a bit. "Episode IV -- A New Hope" alone has plenty of scary moments: Darth Vader (David Prowse, with James Earl Jones providing the voice) is a creepy, unstoppable monster. The Empire is a faceless force of oppression. Animalistic, screeching Tusken Raiders stalk the deserts of Tatooine and nearly end young Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) journey before it even begins. Homesteads and planets are destroyed, countless people die, heroes are trapped in a trash compactor with a monster ... you name it. The other two entries in the original trilogy also have their share of hair-raising moments, from Han Solo's (Harrison Ford) horrifying carbonite prison to the nightmarish fate that befalls anyone cast in the Sarlacc pit.

For all its adventurous wonder, blockbuster appeal, and enchanting sci-fi spectacle, the Star Wars films have always found their greatest strength in their litany of memorable characters. It's not just lightsabers and the Force that has made fans fall in love with Star Wars, as the company are desperately trying to mine the franchise for every inch of nostalgia possible. But, like any time-based resource, the reserves are drying up. Bringing back Han Solo, Luke and Leia Skywalker, R2-D2, C-3Po and Chewbacca for the sequel trilogy wasn't just a narrative decision, it was likely suggested by the suit-wearing big-wigs at Disney. A new report claims that the House of Mouse views Star Wars as a machine where nostalgia goes in, and money comes out (where can I get one of those machines?).
According to inside sources who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is struggling with the future of Star Wars on the big screen. The already risk-averse company is in a precarious position with the franchise, as Star Wars lovers are perhaps the most...

While they make up many of the most iconic characters in cinematic history, villains are typically defined more by their impact than by their prolific screen time. This is evinced by some of the greatest villains having surprisingly low screen time in their films, such as Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) appearing in The Silence of the Lambs for just 16 minutes, and Darth Vader (James Earl Jones & David Prowse) having just 34 minutes of screen time across the original Star Wars trilogy.

James Earl Jones Was Paid $7,500 For Original Star Wars Trilogy ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia )
In a galaxy far, far away, James Earl Jones, who gave voice to one of cinema’s most fearsome villains, Darth Vader, was paid a surprisingly small fee: $7,000. Yes, for just a single day of voice work on Star Wars, the actor received what seemed decent at the time—though only a fraction of what his co-stars earned.
The backstory? George Lucas had a vision. He needed a voice as iconic as the character—Vader, towering, masked, and carrying a voice that could shiver anyone to their core. British actor David Prowse brought the physicality, but Lucas wanted that deep, authoritative tone. Lucas even considered Orson Welles for the part, but he was just too recognizable. Then, Jones’s agent got a call. The rest is history.

Star Wars has always been a box office juggernaut ever since it began in 1977, but even the legendary sci-fi franchise has faced competition from other blockbusters over the decades. Star Wars' inflation-adjusted box office earnings are staggeringly high: only two of the 12 theatrically-released films fall below $1 billion when adjusted for inflation. Most Star Wars movies became the highest-grossing films for the year they were released, and absolutely blew their competition out of the water. There were some entries to the saga that were outperformed, however, and even the high earners had competition to deal with.
There are quite a few ingredients in the recipe for box office success. Making an entertaining movie is the most important aspect, but things like marketing, target audiences, and release dates are also important. After having to lift an actor in a wheelchair repeatedly on the set of A Clockwork Orange, David Prowse remarked that the director wasn't exactly "One-Take Kubrick." Jake Gyllenhaal nearly lost it working through David Fincher's repetitive takes on Zodiac. Fincher and Stanley Kubrick, notorious for their perfectionist approaches, have made headlines for re-shooting scenes dozens and dozens of times. But the director who even showed them up is one of the original masters of the silent comedy, Charlie Chaplin, in his 1931 feature, City Lights.

John Boyega, who portrays Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, shows his support for a fan-favorite relationship that never came to pass by endorsing it on social media. Boyega and his fellow co-star, Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), have long since shown their support for the ship named "Finnpoe," which began the moment the pair first met in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
In a new Instagram story, however, John Boyega takes his support to the next level. He shows off a friendship bracelet given to him at New York City Comic-Con that says "Finnpoe," complete with rainbow-colored beads. Boyega adds no captions, as the bracelet certainly speaks for itself.
This support for Finnpoe may not be anything new from Boyega, but it's still promising to hear that he continues to endorse it even 5 years after the Star Wars sequel trilogy has come to an end. Hopefully, this means that...

Reviewing Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is an acknowledgment that it is a sequel when it hit theaters in 1980, Star Wars had already changed the world forever, and expectations were impossibly high. Theaters filled with fans frantically hoping the sequel would live up to it. And miraculously, it was even better. The instantly iconic and beloved trio of Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher reprised their respective roles, and Luke took the next steps to become a Jedi while Han and Leia are on the run from the Empire, leading up to a magnificent final act.

While the entertainment industry has created many prequels and spinoffs exploring individual characters in the past decade, some iconic movie and TV characters still have no backstory. At face value, a famous character's past might seem like something fans should want to see. However, many movie characters who didn't need an origin story but got one in the form of a prequel demonstrate the pitfalls of this approach.
Tropes including "Protagonist Without a Past," "No Origin Stories Allowed," and "The Noodle Incident" are exemplary of how a certain amount of mystery in a character's past can be very satisfying, an effect that is ruined by an origin story. More unwanted upcoming sequels and spinoffs may overextend certain character arcs, while those in classic movies that actually can't be remade or continued are supposedly safe. A handful of iconic characters are spectacular enigmas, and should always remain that way.

Like many actors before him, David Corenswet will suit up as the Man of Tomorrow in Superman. The actor, previously known for The Politician, is joined by Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skylar Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, and more. Superman will follow a young Clark Kent early in his Superman career as he balances heroics and journalism.
Corenswet, like fellow Superman star Christopher Reeve, is a Julliard alum, and his role as Superman is his first in the superhero genre. As such, the actor had his work cut out for him to physically prepare for Superman.

Han Solo is one of Star Wars' most beloved, iconic characters, and 15 quotes in particular are his very best. Harrison Ford brought Han Solo to life in A New Hope, and Han has since become among the most popular characters in all Star Wars movies and TV shows. Not only did Han Solo play a pivotal role in one of the most important periods of the Star Wars timeline, but he was also a charming, witty character who played opposite Luke's wide-eyed innocence perfectly.
Even after the original trilogy, however, Han continued to be a fan-favorite figure in Star Wars. In fact, while the sequels are unfortunately still considered some of Star Wars' worst movies, Harrison Ford's return as Han Solo (however short-lived) was almost universally celebrated. Throughout Han Solo's appearances in the Star Wars original and sequel trilogies, these 15 quotes are his very best.

Filmmaker George Lucas introduced arguably the most sinister and menacing villain in cinema with 1977’s Star Wars. The film features the first appearance of Sith Lord Darth Vader, a commander in the evil Empire and the symbol of their oppression over the galaxy far, far away. The character quickly became iconic and remains part of the pop culture zeitgeist even today.
Darth Vader first appeared in George Lucas’ 1977 film Star Wars (Credit: Lucasfilm).
However, fans might be unaware that five different actors have portrayed the character in live-action media. As a result, fans of the space opera saga must be curious to learn about different figures who contributed to bringing the menacing villain to life. Before we get into the five most well-known faces behind Darth Vader, an honorable mention goes to Spencer Wilding and Daniel Naprous who physically played the character for 2016’s Rogue One.

This article contains brief mention of suicide.
The late James Earl Jones will always be most closely associated with Darth Vader, whom he voiced in the original Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. David Prowse gave the character his imposing presence, but it was Jones who made that threat manifest: sinister, dominating, and with pure unbridled rage constantly simmering below the surface. It's an awesome legacy in and of itself, even without the decades of celebrated performances he delivered in every kind of project covering every conceivable genre. Indeed, it's a testament to the actor's range that he could perfectly embody both Vader and Mufasa in The Lion King the worst dad and the best dad in all of pop culture.
As tall as Vader's shadow looms, however, he's not the only great villain that Jones brought to life. Conan the Barbarian John Milius' 1982 adaptation of the pulp stories...

Irvin Kershner, the director of The Empire Strikes Back, was once willing to direct one of the movies in the prequel trilogy, and his take on Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones could have been very different from George Lucas' vision. The Empire Strikes Back is widely regarded as the best Star Wars movie ever made, and a lot of its reputation comes from Kershner's work. Lucas had met Kershner when he was a professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, and he had asked his former teacher to direct another Star Wars movie.
Though George Lucas asked three people to direct the prequels, he ended up directing every installment himself. Many viewers considered that a mistake, and though the prequels are now beloved by many Star Wars fans, most agree they aren't as good as the original trilogy. If the prequel trilogy had been made just a few years earlier,...

There might not be many different Sith Lords roaming the galaxy onscreen in Star Wars, but one incredible cosplay has brought another Sith to life. The Sith were believed to be extinct for centuries during the time of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. In actuality, though their numbers had been reduced to a single pair, the Sith were simply biding their time in the shadows. Darth Sidious expertly avoided the Jedi's suspicion until he took their Chosen One as his new apprentice and took over the galaxy. This cosplay adds yet another to Sidious' ranks.

Easter eggs are always exciting finds, but some movies keep them so well hidden that they aren't discovered for many years. Filmmakers often put Easter eggs in their movies as a bonus for audiences who are more observant, often because they are passionate enough to watch a movie many times. They can either be references to other movies, small signatures from the director, or hidden details that add to the story.
These days, people can find comprehensive lists of the Easter eggs in a movie online just a few days after it hits theaters. This makes it even more exciting when somebody discovers a hidden reference that has been lying in plain sight for years. The world has just been hit with the tragic news that James Earl Jones has passed away. Surrounded by his family, he died at his home in Pawling, NY at the age of 93. The cause of death has yet to be revealed. Jones was a ground-breaking pioneer for African Americans for his work in the entertainment industry, a resume that dates all the way back to 1955 and includes both on-screen and off-screen performances.
He was perhaps best known for his distinct voice, that deep basso profondo that made his performances so distinguished. His tone could go from dignified to menacing in the blink of an eye. James Earl Jones may be best known as the voice of Darth Vader, but there was so much more to the celebrated actor than that. When George Lucas cast the voice of Darth Vader, he knew he had to get it right. "I knew the voice had to be very, very special, Lucas said in a speech at the American Theater Wing Gala in 2015, "It was really a choice between Orson Welles and James Earl Jones. James Earl Jones won hands down."
For 47 years, James Earl Jones has been synonymous with Darth Vader in the minds of Star Wars fans. He is one of 14 actors who've played Darth Vader in one medium or another, but his booming in unmatched. Now, sadly, Jones has passed away at the age of 93; his friends and colleagues are stepping forward with heartfelt tributes for him. But he was, of course, so much more than the voice of Darth Vader.

The phrase “voice of a generation” gets thrown around a lot, but if that label were defined by sheer recognizability, it would be hard to find a better fit than James Earl Jones, who died Tuesday. The real question is: which generation?
Depending on whether you were born before or after the year 1990, chances are good that the sound of Jones’ roll-of-thunder baritone instantly conjures one of two characters in your mind: “The Lion King” father Mufasa or “Star Wars” villain Darth Vader. That means, Jones speaks, and you think either of a cosmically wise patriarch, whose ghost returns to offer his self-doubting successor an encouraging “remember who you are,” or the most malevolent dad in all the universe, a destroyer of planets determined to lure his son to the Dark Side.
