When recommended a beach-read by a roommate he doesn’t want, the academic Judge Stefan Mortensen (Geoffrey Rush) scoffs, “All those books say the same thing.”
10 years after Julianne Moore won her Oscar for “Still Alice,” moviegoers could argue something similar about an indie drama casting an elite actor as a dementia patient in rapid decline. Those audiences will be the least prepared for “The Rule of Jenny Pen” and may feel its singular wrath stronger than most. That’s an enviable position to be in for one of recent memory’s more unusual thrillers — even if its lack of narrative convention veers more vexing in the end.

Even the most anti-war artists of the 21st century could bring themselves to violence in extreme circumstances — such as when they saw Woody Allen’s stupid, smarmy, unpunched face.
Nowadays, it would be neither newsworthy nor noteworthy for anyone with convictions to say that they wish they could give comedy filmmaking legend and accused child molester Woody Allen a smack that would make his head spin faster than ours did when Allen became his own father-in-law. Allen’s filmmaking career continued on mostly unimpeded after he left his romantic partner Mia Farrow for her 21-year-old adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn in 1992, but the court of public opinion has somewhat soured on the Annie Hall star and director in the decades since, especially after Allen’s biological daughter Dylan accused him of sexual assault.

With over a century’s worth of cinematic witches, Ruth Gordon’s turn in Rosemary’s Baby as Minnie Castevet broke the mold. To be fair, the reveal that the disarming, matronly Manhattanite serves Satan comes as a late-game twist, but even then, Minnie doesn’t revert to an archetypical witch form. Minnie Castevet remains as effervescent, stylish, and unflappable as she is from the start, even as Rosemary’s Baby ends on its iconic shocking final shot.
That is by design, of course. What’s with all the maternity angst lately? First came Nightbitch, then If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, and now — in keeping with the rule that three makes it a trend — please welcome Mother’s Baby. Led by a fiercely compelling performance from Marie Leuenberger, Johanna Moder’s psychological thriller ticks along with exceptional confidence while it maintains ambiguity as to whether post-partum depression is feeding Julia’s paranoia or there really is something unsettling about her infant son, making her suspect a switcheroo at the private fertility clinic where she gave birth. It’s when the script starts providing answers that things get shaky.
Part of the issue is that the movie often seems to be itching to make a decisive turn into horror but keeps holding back. Moder and co-writer Arne Kohlweyer commit to that shift so late in the action that it all becomes a bit,...

Director Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby film was a feast for the eyes. In true Luhrmann fashion, it presented the 1920s F. Scott Fitzgerald novel as an over-the-top visual smorgasbord with glitzy costumes and modern music. Its stylistic choices set it apart from other adaptations and, in doing so, it has cemented itself a place in the public consciousness for years following its release. Luhrmann also boasted an all-star cast who embraced their roles with verve and fervor. Ronan Farrow revealed at the Variety Studio presented by Audible at Sundance that he was the one to gently nudge his mother, Mia Farrow, back into acting. Farrow spent last fall on Broadway opposite Patti LuPone in Jen Silverman’s play “The Roommate.” Prior to that, she had a supporting run on the Ryan Murphy-produced Netflix series “The Watcher.” But she’s otherwise been off screens for nearly a decade.
“I look at a career like my moms and she’s such an incredible talent,” Ronan tells Variety’s Tatiana Siegal. “I run into directors and writers in my generation who are obsessed with her body of work and want her to share that and share her talent. Understandably, she has gone through periods of time where she’s reluctant to come back to it. Lord knows she’s had go of it in this industry, highs but also the dark side of it.

Actress Scarlett Johansson finally escaped our long-running photo gallery of the greatest living actresses to never receive an Oscar nomination. And she did it in grand style by picking up two for her 2019 films “Marriage Story” and “Jojo Rabbit.” Just recently, Kirsten Dunst had been in our gallery for years and then earned her first Academy Award bid for “The Power of the Dog.” Jamie Lee Curtis was fortunately removed from the gallery with not only a nomination but win for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Emily Blunt was finally nominated for “Oppenheimer” years after winning her first SAG Award for “A Quiet Place.” And in 2025, both Demi Moore (“The Substance”) and Zoe Saldana (“Emilia Perez”) finally got their first ever nominations.
In 2014, “Friends” star Jennifer Aniston looked like a lock to receive her first Academy Award nomination for “Cake,” following citations at the Golden Globes, SAG, and Broadcast Film Critics.

The Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni feud seems to have only started and is expected to get exponentially much more complicated as the drama unfolds. Having filed a complaint against Baldoni, accusing him of s*xual harassment, Lively also claimed the actor and his team tried to run a smear campaign against her.

What do Kim Novak, Jim Carrey, John Turturro, and the late Donald Sutherland all have in common? Well, aside from being acclaimed actors, these stars have never (we repeat: never) been nominated for an Academy Award. And that crime is now being celebrated by the annual anti-awards season festival, hosted by the Museum of the Moving Image.
The beloved museum announced its third iteration of the popular “Snubbed” screening series, which reexamines films that have been overlooked by the Academy. The 2025 theme is centered on actors and titled “Snubbed Forever: Great Actors, No Nominations.” The program will run February 1 through March 9, and feature 21 films starring actors who have never been nominated for an Oscar.
Highlights include Kim Novak in the enduring “Vertigo,” John Turturro and John Goodman in “Barton Fink,” Rita Hayworth in “The Lady from Shanghai,” Jim Carrey in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” and Danny DeVito in “Batman Returns.

It’s Liza with a Z. Not Lisa with an S. Liza Minnelli is among those rare, true living legends who seem irreplaceable. Irreplaceable both in that their talent is immense and that it literally appears nobody from a younger generation has the capacity to do as many things as well as she did them. In Liza we have an iconic singer, dancer, and actor. And let’s not forget a pioneer of fashion! One thinks of peers like Barbra Streisand and Cher as apt comparisons and very few others.
Bruce David Klein’s new documentary Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story is an unabashed celebration of the woman as told by all of her best friends. Celebrity talking heads like Mia Farrow, Ben Vereen, Chita Rivera, and Joel Grey speak effervescently about Minnelli. Singer and good friend Michael Feinstein emerges as the central storyteller of the film, alongside Minnelli herself.

Hereditary is now streaming on Netflix and quickly made it to the top charts, and this is a great reminder to watch this 97% horror movie from 57 years ago, which got a prequel in 2024. Ari Aster’s filmmaking career began in the late 2000s, gaining recognition for his 2011 short The Strange Thing About the Johnsons. Seven years later, Aster made his feature-directorial debut with Hereditary, a psychological horror movie starring Toni Collette. Hereditary was a critical and commercial success, turning Aster into one of the modern masters of horror.
Hereditary introduces the audience to Annie Graham (Collette), her husband Steve (Gabriel Byrne), their 16-year-old son Peter (Alex Wolff), and their 13-year-old daughter Charlie (Milly Shapiro). After the death of Annie’s secretive mother and another major family tragedy, disturbing family secrets are revealed. Annie soon realizes her family is being watched, and there are some sinister plans that put them in great danger.

Production on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is underway, and the film has just cast the parents of the titular hero. Based on the DC Comic of the same name, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will see House of the Dragon's Milly Alcock in the lead role of Kara Zor-El, a.k.a. Supergirl in the Dcu. The roles of Supergirl's mom and dad have been cast, and they are fan favorites.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham are set to play Supergirls' parents. The rest of the cast includes Eve Ridley as Ruthie Marye Knoll, a young girl who hires Supergirl to hunt down the man who killed her father, Krem of the Yellows Hills, played by Rust and Bone's Matthias Schoenaerts. Former Aquaman star Jason Momoa is set to play the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in the film.

The debate about what constitutes The Great American Novel is never-ending, yet F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" always finds its way into this conversation. It might be tempting to simply reduce the author's work to an enduring portrayal of the Roaring Twenties, but Fitzgerald's book also cuts through the illusions while sustaining the enthralling mystery surrounding its titular figure. Once the mist dissipates, and both Jay Gatsby and his (only) friend Nick Carraway are laid bare for who they are, what remains is a profound sense of emptiness. Don't get me wrong: "The Great Gatsby" is a story about the inherent hollowness of spectacle, obscene wealth, and relationships of convenience that have the illusion of depth. However, once we confront the rare flashes of moving sincerity in a tale so luridly tragic, the empty lure of the green light at the heart of the novel takes on a terribly haunting sheen.

At the 82nd annual Golden Globes held on January 5, Demi Moore, who has been working steadily in Hollywood for decades, won her first ever competitive acting award thanks to Coralie Fargeat's body-horror hit "The Substance."
Moore beat out some stiff competition to win Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy award, including Cynthia Erivo in "Wicked: Part One" and Mikey Madison in "Anora," and her powerful speech about how women in the entertainment industry are constantly trying to measure up to a truly impossible standard was nothing if not deeply inspiring. Despite apparently being told that she would never be anything more than a "popcorn actress" by some foolish studio executive, Moore proudly stood on stage at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, telling women all over the world, "In those moments when we don't think we're smart enough or pretty enough or skinny enough or successful enough or...

While most horror fans would tell you that the ‘70s were the heyday for the genre, with titles like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Exorcist, and Halloween scaring their way onto screens and into our hearts, the ‘60s weren’t too shabby either. It’s the decade that gave us favorites like Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, and - just before his life was flipped on its head the following year - 1968 saw Roman Polanski deliver the bundle of joy known as Rosemary’s Baby. The movie is steeped in eerie visuals and an unsettling plotline that keeps audiences guessing, while Mia Farrow’s top-tier performance is the glue that holds it all together. Right now, audiences can head over to Paramount+ where the Certified Fresh 97% Rotten Tomatoes film is now streaming.

After watching the scene in “The Substance” where Elisabeth Sparkle, played by Demi Moore, repeatedly applies and wipes off lipstick in front of a mirror — a chilling metaphor for identity, erasure and self-loathing — I couldn’t have imagined that critics and awards voters would embrace it. Yet here we are, with Moore emerging as a frontrunner in the Oscar race for her career-defining performance in Coralie Fargeat’s provocative body horror film. Her Golden Globes win Sunday not only cements Moore’s legacy but also shines a long-overdue spotlight on horror as a genre worthy of awards season acclaim.
At 62, Moore is on the verge of earning her first-ever Oscar nomination for best actress. Her haunting and multilayered portrayal of an aging star who takes a mysterious serum to regain her youth — only for the experiment to spiral into a surreal nightmare — has been hailed as a masterclass in physical and emotional transformation.

Although she has earned a lot of acclamation for her onscreen performances, Blake Lively might as well be deemed nothing short of one of the most controversial figures in all of Hollywood’s entertainment industry as well. Be it for her backlash-inducing decisions like her plantation wedding or simply her arguable comments, she perfectly steals the spotlight every now and then.
That said, Lively isn’t all that choosy with her words and behavior either. To say the least, she is as straightforward as she is bold, and as unhesitant to speak her mind out as ever. As appreciable as this trait of hers is, it is also the very feature that often tends to leave her in a contentious position among fans, especially with the statements she makes and stands her ground on.

Emma Stone really said new year, new hair, new me.
While attending the 2025 Golden Globes on Sunday, the Oscar-winning actress debuted a new pixie haircut while walking the red carpet. The Hollywood Reporter later learned the haircut was for an upcoming movie role.
Her new hairdo first caught viewers’ attention once she jumped out of her car, hand in hand with husband Dave McCary. Stone was all smiles, also sporting a beautiful Louis Vuitton strapless red gown, featuring a red bow at the waist.
While describing Stone’s new hair, her longtime stylist and Olaplex ambassador Tracey Cunningham said, “It’s like Mia Farrow. She basically has no hair. It’s super short, and she’s going to have it cut again, so it’ll be even shorter.”
Cunningham also noted that the color is a bit darker than her normal hair, calling the new hue “nutmeg.”

There’s always a hidden agenda, an unseen twist, and a voice waiting to speak out. Kjersti Flaa, the journalist, has had enough of the ‘blind support’ that seems to overshadow critical thinking. Molly O'Connell is one of the newest cast members to join Season 10 of Southern Charm. In the first episode, viewers learn that she's close friends with Madison LeCroy, who introduced her as, "She's funny, and she's weird in a good way." She had a sexting relationship with Craig Conover, and has a crush on the much-older Whitney Sudler-Smith.
The Charleston native is also a model, and she was the runner-up in Cycle 16 of America's Next Top Model. Her season saw her having an incredibly drastic hair makeover that she, thankfully, pokes fun of to this day. It’s a packed fall for NYC theater fans, with stellar musical adaptations of beloved movies like “Death Becomes Her” and “Teeth,” among others.
Already this fall, there have been plenty of marquee names tackling Broadway, like Great White Way newbie Robert Downey Jr. in “McNeal,” to thrilling returns, like Mia Farrow and Patti LuPone in “The Roommate.” And — though technically beyond Broadway — favorites like Adam Driver will also appear on the NYC stage.
It’s safe to say the biggest success of the season has already happened, with the brilliant Cole Escola in “Oh Mary.” The play was a downtown smash last spring, but the comedy — written by and starring Escola as Mary Todd Lincoln at the end of the Civil War — has now become a somewhat surprising breakout mainstream hit, with a slew of celebrities stopping by recently, in addition to rave reviews for the laugh-out-loud, beautifully deranged performance and show.

Rebecca Hall is taking back her past comments about working with Woody Allen.
The 42-year-old actress has worked with the 88-year-old filmmaker twice – first in 2008 on Vicky Cristina Barcelona then again in 2019 for A Rainy Day in New York.
Back in 2018, Rebecca issued a statement apologizing for working with Woody amid his controversies and the Time’s Up movement.
Now in a new interview, Rebecca admitted that she “struggle(s)” with her past comments about Woody.
Keep reading to find out more…“I kind of regret making that statement, because I don’t think it’s the responsibility of his actors to speak to that situation,” Rebecca told The Guardian.
She went on to say that “it’s very unlike” her “to make a public statement about anything.”
“I make the stuff; that’s how I am political,” Rebecca continued. “I don’t think of myself as an ‘actor-vist’; I’m not that person.

A trickle is becoming a flood for Bluesky, the social media company that has seen spectacular growth since the presidential election. On Tuesday, the microblogging platform hit 20 million users, after averaging 1 million new users per day over the past five days.
According to a Nov. 13 post by Bluesky CEO Jay Graber, the site had 6 million users in late August, nearly 11 million in late October and hit 15 million users on Nov. 15. It added another 5 million users in just five days, with the explosive growth seen since Nov. 5, the day of the election, accelerating.
Bluesky has been one of the main beneficiaries of millions of users leaving Elon Musk’s X, as the site formerly known as Twitter descends into a mess of bots, extreme content, crypto scams, ads, pornography, racism, transphobia and misinformation.

Hollywood has always been a place where talent shines, but it’s also where controversies bubble up like a pot of water on the stove. This was never more apparent than when several prominent stars, including Kate Winslet and Timothée Chalamet, openly expressed regret over their collaborations with the once-celebrated yet now-controversial director, who faced serious accusations from his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, about s*xual abuse dating back to 1992.

Rebecca Hall is reflecting on her public statement denouncing director Woody Allen six years after the abuse allegations resurfaced.
After Allen’s ex-wife Mia Farrow’s adopted daughter Dylan Farrow wrote an opinion piece for the Los Angeles Times calling out actors who still collaborate with the alleged molester, Hall shared on Instagram in 2018 that she had second thoughts about starring in Allen’s “A Rainy Day in New York.” Hall had previously led Allen’s 2008 film “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”
“After reading and re-reading Dylan Farrow’s statements of a few days ago and going back and reading the older ones – I see, not only how complicated this matter is, but that my actions have made another woman feel silenced and dismissed,” Hall wrote at the time. “That is not something that sits easily with me in the current or indeed any moment, and I am profoundly sorry. Roman Polanski's 1968 horror film Rosemary's Baby is an undisputed classic of the genre, a film that relies on an ever-increasing sense of dread and uneasiness that keeps Mia Farrow's Rosemary and the audience questioning everything. The film's twisted, ambiguous ending is a pitch-perfect sendoff that ensures its unsettling nature stays with the viewer well after the credits roll. Rosemary's Baby spawned a sequel, Look What's Happened to Rosemary's Baby, and Paramount+ released a prequel, Apartment 7A, in September 2024, but neither project succeeds in bringing to the table what the original does seemingly effortlessly. A 2014 NBC miniseries remake of the film, also called Rosemary's Baby, fares much better while giving it a modern update.

Musk’s ownership of X and his updates to content moderation on the platform have been pushing brands and media groups closer and closer to the exit. “Hell’s Kitchen” star Kecia Lewis requested an apology from Patti LuPone on Saturday after the Broadway legend and “Agatha All Along” star called the jukebox musical “too loud.”
In a six-minute video posted to Instagram on Saturday, Lewis — who won a Tony this year for her performance as Miss Liza Jane in “Hell’s Kitchen” — began her open letter to LuPone by specifying that the message is “not from the cast or crew or producers of ‘Hell’s Kitchen.’ I am speaking for Kecia Lewis only.”
Lewis went on to note “a couple of situations that have gone on in the last few weeks” involving LuPone. “The first one is that you contacted our theater owner about changing a couple of our sound cues because you found them to be too loud,” she said. “You also, after our sound design was adjusted, sent flowers to our sound and stage management team thanking them.

Update, with video: Patti LuPone, famously fired by Andrew Lloyd Webber from her role as Norma Desmond in the 1993 London production of Sunset Boulevard, is putting old grudges aside — kinda, sorta — and plans to see the new Jamie Lloyd-directed Broadway production on Wednesday.
In a deliciously on-point LuPone appearance on ABC’s The View today, the former Evita was in peak candid form in delivering a side-eye “compliment” about the hot new Broadway Sunset revival starring Nicole Scherzinger as Norma.
First, a little background. In 1993, LuPone created the role of Norma Desmond in the original London production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, directed by Trevor Nunn. The project was a reteaming of LuPone and Lloyd Webber following their massive success with Evita, but history didn’t repeat itself: LuPone abruptly was fired by the composer, who subsequently hired Glenn Close to open the show in Los Angeles and eventually on Broadway.

Last month playwright Jez Butterworth brought his latest work, “The Hills of California,” to Broadway. The haunting family drama explores the relationships between four sisters and their dying mother in their creaky seaside home, seamlessly moving back and forth in time between 1976 and 1955. The play previously bowed in London earlier this year, and before coming stateside it earned two Olivier Award nominations for Best New Play and Best Actress for Laura Donnelly, who reprises her performance in New York.
Since his Broadway debut only 13 years ago, Butterworth has quickly established himself as one of the theater’s most accomplished contemporary playwrights. He has two Tony nominations to his name, for New York debut “Jerusalem” in 2011 and for his Tony-winning epic “The Ferryman” in 2019. Those nominations alone already tie him with theater royalty including Ayad Akhtar, Tony Kushner, Tracy Letts, David Mamet, Lynn Nottage, Eugene O’Neill, and Wendy Wasserstein — all...

Few horror movies are as fantastic or as retroactively controversial as "Rosemary's Baby." Decades after its release, what are we to make of a movie about a woman's bodily agency that was made by a man –- Roman Polanski –- who was later convicted of statutory rape? It's just one of several tricky questions that's elicited by any thorough look back at the film; in addition to Polanski's life story, both of the movie's surviving cast members (see below) have been embroiled in their own complex and traumatic situations in the years since the film debuted in 1968.
It's a tricky legacy for a phenomenal movie that works on the strengths of all involved, including a powerful young Mia Farrow, who turns Polanski's already-sharp take on Ira Levin's great book into something unforgettable. Most of the other actors who made the film a classic are gone now, including John Cassavettes...

Rosemary's Baby's official prequel, Apartment 7A, has premiered, but the 1968 movie's best follow-up came out six years ago and boasts an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 90%. When it was first released in the late 1960s, Rosemary's Baby played a crucial role in shaping the horror genre and inspired many horror movies that came after it. Over half a century after its release, the film still stands the test of time, and even its thematic elements are now more relevant than ever.
Considering Rosemary's Baby's lasting legacy, creating its prequel or any direct extension of its universe was never going to be an easy feat. Natalie Erika James still took up the challenge by directing Apartment 7A, which not only adds more depth to Rosemary's Baby's story but also stands on its own as a compelling horror movie. Natalie Erika James still took up the challenge by directing Apartment 7A, which not only adds more depth to Rosemary's Baby's story but also stands on its own as a compelling horror movie. However, long before Apartment 7A saw the light of day,...

Aubrey Plaza is securing major roles lately, but for us and our readers, her most notable role is as Rio Vidal in the MCU’s Agatha All Along.
While Plaza has officially joined the MCU, she’s not part of the Avengers; instead, she’s taking on something even cooler—joining Agatha Harkness’ coven, which is currently traversing the Witches’ Road.
Plaza plays Rio Vidal, a Green Witch and romantic rival to Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness. Some intriguing interactions between the two were hinted at in Episode 4, and we’re eager to uncover their past, especially given that Rio seems intent on killing Agatha, her former lover.
If Plaza weren’t already part of Agatha’s makeshift coven, she mentioned she would choose a more interesting lineup (though that might depend on who you ask). The actress recently appeared on The Daily Show, where she was asked whom she...

Aubrey Plaza is lining up huge roles in recent times, but for us and our readers currently, the most notable role is that of Rio Vidal in MCU’s ‘Agatha All Along.’
Yes, Plaza has joined the MCU, but she did not join the Avengers however, it’s something far cooler, Agatha Harkness’ coven which is currently on the Witches’ Road.
Plaza portrays Rio Vidal, a Green Witch and romantic antagonist to Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness. Some spicy interactions between the two of them were already teased in Episode 4 and we’re truly looking forward to seeing what happened in the past. Especially considering that Rio Vidal is trying to apparently kill Agatha, her former lover.
If Plaza wasn’t currently a part of Agatha’s makeshift coven, she revealed she would pick a more interesting team ( depending on who you ask that is.) The actress recently appeared on...

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Apartment 7A.A prequel to Rosemary's Baby, Apartment 7A treads much of the same ground as Roman Polanski's 1968 horror classic, this time following Terry Gionoffrio (Julia Garner), a struggling dancer with big dreams. Fans of Rosemary's Baby will remember Terry as the young woman Rosemary (Mia Farrow) meets in the basement of the Bramford who later jumps out of a window to her death, landing on the sidewalk outside the building. In Rosemary's Baby, Minnie (Ruth Gordon) and Roman (Sidney Blackmer) Castevet describe Terry as a recovering drug addict, but Apartment 7A paints a much different picture. Minnie and Roman, this time played by Dianne Wiest and Kevin McNally, find Terry stumbling out of the Bramford after too many painkillers and generously take her in, but Terry is much more ambitious and career focused than they expected. Largely following the same story structure as its predecessor,...
