Steven Soderbergh’s directing career started with “Sex, Lies and Videotape,” a massive breakout that not only launched his career — it changed the industry of independent filmmaking in America. While struggling to find his footing after becoming a household name at age 26, Soderbergh never let himself become frozen by his early success or some preconceived notion of what his career would be. Instead, he dogmatically followed any story that piqued his interest, regardless if it was building the slick “Ocean’s Eleven” franchise or an experimental film he shot in his hometown with friends (“Schizopolis”).
He has been careful to build a career that was commercially viable so as to maximize his ability to be constantly creating and experimenting with films that were sometimes aggressively uncommercial. Black Hawk Down, Ridley Scott's modern war thriller starring Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, and a whole cavalcade of great actors, has found a new streaming home. As of March 1, fans of the war genre have been able to stream the gritty and realistic movie on Netflix. The very same day, another great film by Ridley Scott was added to Netflix's library: Blade Runner: The Final Cut is available as well, giving Netflix users the chance to see the best Blade Runner version there is, and the only one Ridley Scott was in complete control of.
Based on the book Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War by Mark Bowden, Black Hawk Down was written by Ken Nolan. The war movie follows the events that transpired in Somalia during the Battle of Mogadishu when a helicopter carrying American soldiers was shot down in an area dominated by militia members loyal to Mohamed Farrah Aidid.

Oscar nominated movies go through meticulous discussions and careful considerations before becoming a candidate to win the actual award. But sometimes public opinion does not necessarily align with the experts. The audience does not shy away from expressing their opinions—especially when they do not like a movie.
But that doesn’t mean these films aren’t worth watching, they’re entertaining. However, if we start handing out nominations to every entertaining movie, the Academy Awards would lose their value, wouldn’t they? In some cases, these films even overshadowed more deserving contenders, fueling criticism about the very selection process of movie nomination.
In this list, we will look at some of the most controversial and surprising movies nominated for an Academy Award. Without further ado, let’s find out if the movies selected were justified or not.

"Prison Break" was one of the most popular shows of the early 00s, and recently got a second life thanks to streaming. It's a show that — like "24" and "Lost" — helped popularize serialized narratives in network TV. Instead of standalone episodes that made it easy for casual viewers to dip in and out, "Prison Break" told an ongoing story where every episode directly built up to the next one. This forced viewers to keep tuning in every single week expecting actual resolutions to the story.
The show follows two brothers, Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) and Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller), whose lives are upended after Lincoln is wrongfully accused of murdering the vice president's brother. When Lincoln is quickly sentenced to death and incarcerated in a high security prison, Michael takes it upon himself to commit armed robbery to get sentenced to the same prison as his brother. William Fichtner is among the actors joining Beef season 2 at Netflix, though we still don’t have a release date.
It’s been almost a year since we heard big news regarding another season of Beef, the Netflix drama about a petty squabble that spirals wildly out of control across its ten episodes. Stephen Yeun and Ali Wong led the cast of the first season, which was both critically and commercially successful. If the show hasn’t yet made it from your watchlist to your eyeballs, it’s well worth your time.
Led by showrunner Lee Sung Jin, Beef season 2 will focus on an entirely different conflict with completely different characters. Jin has managed to snag a formidable leading quartet: Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac, Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny.

The Joker character in Christopher Nolan’s Batman film, The Dark Knight (2008) could have looked very different had the part not gone to Heath Ledger, who ultimately won a posthumous Oscar for his captivating performance. Another Academy Award winner, Adrien Brody, per Comic Book, just confessed on Josh Horowitz’s podcast that he was up for the part in the Batman Begins sequel. However, he said he was not surprised he didn’t get the role.
“Oh no, I wasn’t close,” Brody said, referring to the audition process for The Dark Knight. “It was a role that I felt very suited to do. Heath did such a remarkable job in that movie. It was indelible. Such beautiful work. Any actor who has a degree of edge would like to delve into a character like that, especially with a filmmaker like Christopher Nolan who brought such a profound vision,” said the actor,...

1 character from Prison Break proves that continuing the show past season 1 was the right decision, despite arguments that it should have wrapped up. The intense show never quite captured the heights of its debut season, and that led many fans to theorize that it would have been better as a miniseries, instead of dragging the story out for way too long. This would have allowed Prison Break to preserve a pristine legacy, that only includes quality storytelling. However, some of Prison Break’s best episodes were actually from its second season, which is frequently overlooked.
Although Prison Break’s legacy may have soured following the poor reception of its final few seasons, there’s still some great storytelling in season 2 that doesn’t deserve to be forgotten about. It may be easy (and fair) to claim that it peaked too early, but those first episodes are not the only ones worth watching.

Christopher Nolan changed the superhero movie landscape when The Dark Knight was released in 2008. While Batman Begins was a major hit, and introduced the world to Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne, The Dark Knight gave fans the new benchmark for a villainous performance in Heath Ledger's The Joker. Since the film's release, many actors have come forward about nearly playing the iconic DC Comics villain, including Paul Bettany, Willem Dafoe, Sam Rockwell, and even the late Robin Williams. The Pianist and The Brutalist star, Adrien Brody, revealed he was also considered for the role, and the actor recently opened up about losing out to Heath Ledger.
"I wasn't close," Brody joked during an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, to promote his new movie, The Brutalist. Brody described the Joker as "a role I felt very suited to do." Adrien Brody didn't reveal exactly how...

The best Evan Peters movies and TV shows include a strong mix of great genre TV shows and both popular and critically acclaimed movie releases. He got his start as an actor in 2004 and quickly picked up a recurring television role on Invasion when he was only 17. Despite his young age, he proved himself and ended up finding a lot of success, especially on the small screen in horror and science fiction genre series.
Over his career, Peters has won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. Peters also has earned a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor, and he is still in the prime of his career, with plenty of big roles ahead of him. In 2025, Peters joins the cast of the Tron franchise, and it remains to be seen what his career looks like as he continues.

The next Interview with the Vampire spinoff gets an ominous new teaser, with The Talamasca inching closer to a debut. Mayfair Witches season 2 has just returned to AMC and AMC+ with new episodes, but the Immortal Universe is set to expand with a third series based on Anne Rice's work. The Talamasca is focused on a secret organization, seeded in both Interview with the Vampire and Mayfair Witches, that's meant to keep track of supernatural creatures.

A veteran of the organization (played by Elizabeth McGovern) makes a simple statement: “We watch the witches.” The teaser ends by restating that the Talamasca is always watching and always there. Anne Rice's Immortal Universe is showing no signs of slowing down, with new seasons of both Mayfair Witches and Interview with the Vampire on the way. Tongayi Chirisa, who stars in the former as Talamasca agent Ciprien Grieve, recently teased that a crossover between the two series could be in the works.
Speaking with Screen Rant ahead of Mayfair Witches' Season 2 premiere on Jan. 5, Chirisa noted how it would not be unusual for his character to encounter other supernatural beings due to his work with the secret society, Talamasca. "I think for Cip, it's not uncommon to encounter the supernatural," he explained. "I think with what's happening in Season 2, Cip was a certain level of Talamasca agent until certain things start to happen that will finally give him access to some of the deeper secrets of the Talamasca."

A Ridley Scott military action movie receives a high accuracy score from a weapons expert. Alien was his breakout hit and is often considered to be one of Ridley Scott's best movies. He followed up Alien with Blade Runner, another movie that would become a science-fiction classic. Scott made his mark on other genres in the ensuing years with a variety of hits, including the crime drama Thelma & Louise and the historical epic Gladiator.
In 2012, he directed his first Alien movie since the original with the divisive prequel Prometheus, along with directing its 2017 sequel Alien: Covenant. His 2015 movie The Martian was well-received and offered a more hopeful story within the science-fiction genre. Scott's enthusiasm for historical movies remained as strong as his enthusiasm for science-fiction with his direction of The Kingdom of Heaven, The Last Duel, Napoleon, and Gladiator II.

The upcoming series The Talamasca has added a new star. Talamasca refers to a fictional secret society usually referred to as the Order of Talamasca, which stems from the work of author Anne Rice. The Order of Talamasca has appeared in the Vampire Chronicles series as well as the Lives of the Witches of Mayfair series. The Talamasca first appeared in the 1988 novel The Queen of the Damned, but they have not yet appeared on TV. This will change with the upcoming series The Talamasca, which is part of the Immortal Universe.

Drea de Matteo is most famous for playing Adriana La Cerva on The Sopranos, where she was the troubled girlfriend of mobster Christopher Moltisanti, a role that won her an Emmy. She also played Wendy Case, the strong-willed ex-wife of Jax Teller, in the hit show Sons of Anarchy.
Recently, she revealed in an interview that she was offered a role in a Marvel project but decided to turn it down to focus on her family, especially because her son would get upset whenever she had to leave for long filming trips.
The actress shared that she no longer felt attracted to the Hollywood lifestyle or its focus on material things, so she decided to stay closer to home and embrace a simpler way of living.
I was offered some Marvel thing, and I turned that down because my son was crying every time I’d go to Canada to just guest star on something.

In the days of high-concept television, Fox had its own answer to shows like ABC's philosophical mystery show, Lost. In 2005, the network aired Prison Break, a series that would go on to originally have four seasons. Starring Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell, the series follows structural engineer Michael (Miller), who purposefully goes to prison so he can break his brother Lincoln (Purcell) out before he is executed for a crime he didn't commit. While this series may have been better implemented as a feature film, the series changed up the seasons every year and included a revolving cast of interesting characters.
Season 2 introduces FBI Agent Alexander Mahone, played by the incomparable William Fichtner, who would stay throughout the entirety of the series. But when Prison Break was revitalized for Season 5 in 2017, the fascinating character was nowhere to be found. Mahone left a gaping hole where his integral character once was.

Director Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down was a standout release in a decade overwhelmed by a wave of war movies. The 2000s saw a revival of the genre spurred by the success of Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line in the late 90s.
Tubi adds Black Hawk Down to its film library this November. Ridley Scott's war drama joins blockbuster features Edge of Tomorrow, Furious 7, Tomb Raider, The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2, and more. Tubi will also stream Full Metal Jacket and The Patriot for free, expanding viewing options for fans of war movies. Black Hawk Down is a standout release of the 2000s for its visceral depiction of a real-life war story. One original star from Heat has addressed his possible return in Heat 2, alongside who should portray a younger version of his character in flashbacks the film will feature. The upcoming Heat 2 is an adaptation of Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner's 2022 novel of the same name, which serves as a sequel to Mann's 1995 movie Heat. This includes the return of some characters from the original movie.

When I hear the name Elizabeth McGovern, I immediately think of ’80s projects she worked on like Ordinary People, Racing with the Moon, Once Upon a Time in America, The Bedroom Window, and, most of all, She’s Having a Baby. Which probably gives away the fact that I have never watched Downton Abbey. McGovern has continued working steadily over the decades since the ’80s movies I mentioned, and these days is likely best known for playing the role of Cora Crawley on Downton Abbey and then reprising that role in two feature films. Next up: Variety reports that McGovern has signed on to join the cast of Anne Rice’s The Talamasca.
