But despite NCIS: Hawai’i, NCIS: Los Angeles, and NCIS: New Orleans ending their runs, we have the mothership, NCIS: Origins, NCIS: Sydney, and the upcoming NCIS: Tony & Ziva.

Simply put, it’s more alive now than it was a few years ago, which I never envisioned, given the recent hurdles the entertainment industry has faced.

Now, with the news of LL Cool J reprising the role of Special Agent Sam Hanna, it’s hard to be too excited, given that the character has had countless appearances in the broader franchise.

The rapper debuted the role in 2009, when “NCIS” was on its sixth season, before the launch of “NCIS: Los Angeles” later that year. “Los Angeles” was the franchise’s first spinoff, and LL Cool J starred in all 14 seasons before the series concluded in 2023. He made another appearance on the flagship series in the months leading up to the “Los Angeles” series finale, and appeared in “NCIS: Hawai’i” in both 2023 and 2024.

The news was announced in a joint Instagram post between LL Cool J and the official “NCIS” account. “Back on set, baby! NCIS. Let’s get it,” he says in the video. He will appear in one episode set to air on April 21.

NCIS, co-created by Donald Bellisario and Don McGill, is one of the longest-running programs on television. But its origin goes much beyond its premiere in 2003. Although influenced by crime procedurals like Law & Order and CSI, the CBS thriller is hardly a by-product of those shows. Rather, it is a spin-off of a mid-90s military crime procedural, Jag, created by Donald Bellisario.

However, it is not the long history of the show that fascinates modern-day viewers. After circumventing such momentous events as 3 Hollywood strikes (once in 2007-08 and twice in 2023), a pandemic, radical demography shifts, the launch of the streaming era, and the changing of the old guard at CBS studios, NCIS still keeps going strong and churning out profitable episodes with each passing season.

However, all of it was only made possible by the original keepers of the show: Mark Harmon and his castmates.

When NCIS creator Don Bellisario first considered Mark Harmon for the role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, two words popped into his head — pretty boy. Harmon, the charming heartthrob of St. Elsewhere and Chicago Hope, didn’t exactly scream tough-as-nails federal agent.

But then...

David McCallum, star of "The Man from Uncle" and "NCIS," died in 2023 at age 90. Because his long-standing role as the CBS procedural's first and longest-serving chief medical examiner Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard deserved a worthy goodbye, "NCIS" devoted the entire season 21 episode "The Stories We Leave Behind" to McCallum's character, with people closest to Ducky gathering to remember their dear friend and mentor. Still, the deep roster of characters and references in the episode has one glaring omission. Ducky's arguably oldest friend, Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), doesn't appear in person to pay his respects. 

According to "NCIS" co-showrunner Steven D. Binder, a key reason for omitting Gibbs from the episode was that after Harmon left "NCIS" in 2021, bringing him back for just a quick cameo would be a disservice to the fan-favorite character. Speaking to TV Line, Binder elaborated on this line of thinking:

It’s almost time for a new episode of NCIS: Origins.

The new NCIS prequel show has been on hiatus since early February, frustrating fans who enjoy weekly episodes.

The good news is that the hiatus is nearly over, so new episodes are on the horizon.

Some bad news is also in the mix. Since we only get 18 first-season episodes, we are inching closer to the NCIS: Origins season finale.

But at least we can start looking forward to new content, with the added promise that some new folks joined the show.

During an upcoming NCIS: Origins episode, Lauren Bowles plays the wife to her real-life husband, Patrick Fischler. Patrick plays Special Agent in Charge Cliff Wheeler. That could be fun.

"NCIS" is still trucking along on CBS. By now, though, the naval crimes procedural has been on the air for so long that it's already got its own rewatch podcast. "Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch" is co-hosted by Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo, two of the show's main stars who (along with Mark Harmon and Pauley Perrette) both eventually left after spending several years playing their respective roles.

Unlike most rewatch podcasts, however, "Off Duty" doesn't layer on the excessive nostalgia, which makes sense given the allegedly tough working conditions that several "NCIS" cast members have spoken about. Case in point: there's an episode where the two hosts dig into the apparently exhausting early seasons with former star Sasha Alexander, whose Special Agent Caitlin Todd was killed off after just two seasons of "NCIS."

The “nostalgia sequel” has been a big trend in Hollywood lately. Studios have enjoyed producing sequels to past films of the 1990s or 2000s with the same actors reprising their roles amid new stories. They can range from the Scream series to Ghostbusters: Afterlife and more and are an easy way to get fans nostalgic.

In the new film — which will hit theaters this summer — there’s a four-way body swap when lightning indeed strikes again. The idea behind "Freaky Friday" is a fantastically fun film formula, following a mother and daughter who switch bodies one Friday, forcing them to find new respect and empathy for one another through the experience. The most successful interpretation of the story was the 2003 Mark Waters movie, starring Lindsay Lohan as teenager Anna Coleman and Jamie Lee Curtis as her mother Tess, a widowed psychiatrist planning her wedding to new beau Ryan (Mark Harmon). It's a funny film with great performances from both Curtis and Lohan, who embrace the campier side of things and let the comedy run a bit wild.

According to a press release from The Walt Disney Company, the sequel features a “multigenerational twist,” with the film picking up many years after Tess and Anna originally swapped bodies. Anna has a daughter of her own, plus a soon-to-be stepdaughter. Tess and Anna navigate the challenges that come with merging two families and “discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.” The trailer reveals that this time it’s a four-way body swap as Anna, Tess and Anna’s daughter and step-daughter all wake up in different bodies.

It’s safe to say the NCIS franchise swung big when it introduced audiences to NCIS: Origins. For one, not everyone has been on board with the casting of the younger Gibbs.

For many other viewers, including yours truly, the issue with the show had a lot to do with the story being framed around new characters, namely Special Agent Cecilia “Lala” Dominguez.

The main mistake NCIS: Origins made was immediately establishing that Gibbs’s origin story would revolve around Lala.

However, sticking with the series has paid off, with things finally falling into place.

Lala was never an unlikable character. What bothered a lot of viewers was that the focus on Lala and Gibbs didn’t make sense at the time.
