The NCIS franchise is expanding exponentially.
You’d think it would run out of stories after over 20 years on the air.
But despite NCIS: Hawai’i, NCIS: Los Angeles, and NCIS: New Orleans ending their runs, we have the mothership, NCIS: Origins, NCIS: Sydney, and the upcoming NCIS: Tony & Ziva.
(CBS/Screenshot)
Simply put, it’s more alive now than it was a few years ago, which I never envisioned, given the recent hurdles the entertainment industry has faced.
Now, with the news of LL Cool J reprising the role of Special Agent Sam Hanna, it’s hard to be too excited, given that the character has had countless appearances in the broader franchise.

He spent 14 seasons on NCIS: Los Angeles and has already made some appearances on the mothership.

After being on air for over two decades, NCIS is still going strong, despite the change of the mantle of the lead cast. Original members like Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly are no longer a part of the parent show, while the latter is set to receive his own spin-off alongside Cote de Pablo's Ziva. However, during the latest season of NCIS, longtime fans of the franchise will be treated to another familiar face from a beloved spin-off series that was canceled a few years back.
Yes, the news is true. NCIS: Los Angeles alum LL Cool J is returning to the force, this time as a guest star in the show that started it all. LL Cool J will soon reprise the role of Sam Hanna in “NCIS.”
The rapper debuted the role in 2009, when “NCIS” was on its sixth season, before the launch of “NCIS: Los Angeles” later that year. “Los Angeles” was the franchise’s first spinoff, and LL Cool J starred in all 14 seasons before the series concluded in 2023. He made another appearance on the flagship series in the months leading up to the “Los Angeles” series finale, and appeared in “NCIS: Hawai’i” in both 2023 and 2024.
The news was announced in a joint Instagram post between LL Cool J and the official “NCIS” account. “Back on set, baby! NCIS. Let’s get it,” he says in the video. He will appear in one episode set to air on April 21.

One NCIS star racked up so many episodes, and got so good at forensic science, that creator Donald Bellisario nearly made him the show’s technical adviser. With years of hands-on experience playing an expert, his knowledge became second nature. Bellisario saw the potential, but ultimately, the actor stuck to the script.

NCIS, co-created by Donald Bellisario and Don McGill, is one of the longest-running programs on television. But its origin goes much beyond its premiere in 2003. Although influenced by crime procedurals like Law & Order and CSI, the CBS thriller is hardly a by-product of those shows. Rather, it is a spin-off of a mid-90s military crime procedural, Jag, created by Donald Bellisario.

Tensions between Mark Harmon and NCIS creator Donald Bellisario were no secret, but one alleged scene took their feud to another level. When Bellisario demanded changes, Harmon reportedly reshot it exactly the same way — then never spoke to him again.

Before NCIS, Mark Harmon was often seen as just a pretty boy, but one standout role proved he had the grit to play Gibbs. His performance exuded quiet strength and control — exactly what the showrunners needed to see. It shattered any doubts and made him the obvious choice for NCIS’s no-nonsense leader.

David McCallum, star of "The Man from Uncle" and "NCIS," died in 2023 at age 90. Because his long-standing role as the CBS procedural's first and longest-serving chief medical examiner Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard deserved a worthy goodbye, "NCIS" devoted the entire season 21 episode "The Stories We Leave Behind" to McCallum's character, with people closest to Ducky gathering to remember their dear friend and mentor. Still, the deep roster of characters and references in the episode has one glaring omission. Ducky's arguably oldest friend, Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), doesn't appear in person to pay his respects.
According to "NCIS" co-showrunner Steven D. Binder, a key reason for omitting Gibbs from the episode was that after Harmon left "NCIS" in 2021, bringing him back for just a quick cameo would be a disservice to the fan-favorite character. Speaking to TV Line, Binder elaborated on this line of thinking:

It’s almost time for a new episode of NCIS: Origins.
The new NCIS prequel show has been on hiatus since early February, frustrating fans who enjoy weekly episodes.
The good news is that the hiatus is nearly over, so new episodes are on the horizon.
Some bad news is also in the mix. Since we only get 18 first-season episodes, we are inching closer to the NCIS: Origins season finale.
But at least we can start looking forward to new content, with the added promise that some new folks joined the show.
During an upcoming NCIS: Origins episode, Lauren Bowles plays the wife to her real-life husband, Patrick Fischler. Patrick plays Special Agent in Charge Cliff Wheeler. That could be fun.
When is NCIS: Origins Season 1, Episode 14 on CBS?
The next new episode of NCIS: Origins debuts on Monday, March 24 at 10/9c.

"NCIS" is still trucking along on CBS. By now, though, the naval crimes procedural has been on the air for so long that it's already got its own rewatch podcast. "Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch" is co-hosted by Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo, two of the show's main stars who (along with Mark Harmon and Pauley Perrette) both eventually left after spending several years playing their respective roles.
Unlike most rewatch podcasts, however, "Off Duty" doesn't layer on the excessive nostalgia, which makes sense given the allegedly tough working conditions that several "NCIS" cast members have spoken about. Case in point: there's an episode where the two hosts dig into the apparently exhausting early seasons with former star Sasha Alexander, whose Special Agent Caitlin Todd was killed off after just two seasons of "NCIS."

NCISstar Mark Harmon embarked on a feature film career with the 1987 comedy film Summer School, which was a modest box-office success and served as an effective showcase for the 1980s charm and handsomeness that led Harmon to be named People’s second-ever Sexiest Man Alive in 1986. Following Summer School, he starred alongside Sean Connery in the 1988 crime film The Presidio, in which he plays a former military cop turned San Francisco police detective who investigates a murder committed at the titular Army base.
However, despite the incomparable presence of Connery, whose role in The Presidio was immediately preceded by Connery’s Academy Award-winning performance in the 1987 crime film The Untouchables, The Presidio was a commercial and critical failure, which dealt a severe blow to Harmon’s feature-film aspirations. The popularity surrounding NCIS has made it almost impossible to believe that it is, in fact, the spin-off of a 1990s crime procedural drama. The parent series, titled Jag, premiered in 1995 and ran for 10 seasons before the spin-off took shape with Mark Harmon in the lead.

Now, 22 seasons later, the show is still going strong, with more stories to tell and audiences to entertain.

It’s time to get Freaky again as the first trailer for Freakier Friday has hit and taking us back to the 2000s for another Disney sequel.
The “nostalgia sequel” has been a big trend in Hollywood lately. Studios have enjoyed producing sequels to past films of the 1990s or 2000s with the same actors reprising their roles amid new stories. They can range from the Scream series to Ghostbusters: Afterlife and more and are an easy way to get fans nostalgic.
Now, Disney is leaping into it with Freakier Friday. The 2003 film was one of the bigger hits of that year, another adaptation of the best-selling book about a mother and daughter who swap bodies on a Friday.
In this case, Jamie Lee Curtis played Tess, a psychologist clashing with her punk rock daughter Anna, played by Lindsay Lohan. Thanks to a magical fortune cookie, the two swap bodies...

Lilo and Stitch trailer nearly breaks Disney record
Disney unveiled the Lilo and Stitch trailer on March 12, and in just 24 hours it amassed 158 million views, which was the second most for a live-action Disney film, behind only 2019's photorealistic The Lion King. It ranked as the No. 1 trend on Twitter and YouTube. Does that bode well for the film's box office when it's released on May 23? Well, The Lion King remake ended up grossing $1.66 billion worldwide.
Lilo and Stitch, based on the 2002 animated film, is about a friendship between a Hawaiian girl and a fugitive alien. It's directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and stars Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Hannah Waddingham, Chris Sanders, Courtney B. Vance, Zach Galifianakis, and newcomer Maia Kealoha.

Scroll through the Freakier Friday YouTube comment section, and after the “Chad Michael Murray” and “Lindsay Lohan back on the big screen” comments, you’ll see viewers praising an actual live-action Disney movie that isn’t adapted from a Disney animated feature or based on a comic book. Sure, it’s a sequel. But at least it’s a follow-up to a popular live-action film and not a remake, do-over, or reimagining of a classic animated film.
Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere All at Once) reprises her role as Tess Coleman, and Lindsay Lohan returns as Anna Coleman. Also reprising their roles from 2003’s Freaky Friday are the aforementioned Murray along with Mark Harmon, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao. Julia Butters, Vanessa Bayer, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan also star in the body-swapping comedy.

Disney has released the first trailer for Freakier Friday, and it certainly looks like it will live up to the title, with two times the body swapping. Freakier Friday is a legacy sequel to 2003's Freaky Friday, which itself was a remake of a 1976 Disney film of the same name. Freaky Friday starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan and a mother and daughter, respectively, who one day find themselves swapping bodies, needing to learn how the other one lives to understand them better and return to their original bodies.
Disney has released the first trailer for Freakier Friday, directed by Late Night's Nisha Ganatra. Curtis and Lohan reprise their roles as Tess and Anna Coleman, respectively. Here, the premise is a double body swap, with Lohan's Anna swapping bodies with her daughter Harper (Julia Butters) and Tess switching with Lily Davies (Sophia Hammons), the daughter of Anna's new boyfriend.

Curiosity gets the best of Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan in the first official teaser trailer for Freakier Friday. Reprising their roles as Tess and Anna Coleman, respectively, the pair visit a psychic medium (Vanessa Bayer) who eerily notes that their lifelines suggest they’ve “walked in each other’s path” once before — and that they’re likely to do it again, but this time, with a twist. And sure enough, another body swap ensues.

The idea behind "Freaky Friday" is a fantastically fun film formula, following a mother and daughter who switch bodies one Friday, forcing them to find new respect and empathy for one another through the experience. The most successful interpretation of the story was the 2003 Mark Waters movie, starring Lindsay Lohan as teenager Anna Coleman and Jamie Lee Curtis as her mother Tess, a widowed psychiatrist planning her wedding to new beau Ryan (Mark Harmon). It's a funny film with great performances from both Curtis and Lohan, who embrace the campier side of things and let the comedy run a bit wild.
It's a tremendous amount of fun watching Curtis and Lohan pretend to be one another, and now we're going to get a chance to see them do it all over again. Just as "Freaky Friday" examined the challenges of being a teenager and a middle-aged mom, the upcoming sequel...

Mark Harmon has been in quite a few epic pieces throughout his star-studded acting career, though none compares to his iconic role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS. But, of course, that’s not his only epic role, for his performances in numerous other projects have earned him almost equal attention from fans worldwide—like 1987’s Summer School.

Mark Harmon saw his NCIS exit coming long before fans did. Two years before leaving, he hinted that his time as Gibbs wouldn’t last forever. And when the moment arrived, it felt more like a well-placed clue than a shocking twist. After nearly two decades leading the hit procedural, Harmon had already made peace with the inevitable.

But was his departure always the plan, or was there more to the story? Turns out, his exit was set in motion long before he ever stepped off-screen.

Trading epic quests for sitcom laughs? That was the dream for one Lord of the Rings star after years of solving crimes with Mark Harmon in NCIS. Tired of the procedural grind, he hoped to ditch the drama, do half-hour comedies, and just watch his kids grow up. But Hollywood had other plans.

Did he escape the long hours and serious roles? Well, let’s just say his story didn’t wrap up as neatly as a sitcom finale.

It’s safe to say the NCIS franchise swung big when it introduced audiences to NCIS: Origins. For one, not everyone has been on board with the casting of the younger Gibbs.
For many other viewers, including yours truly, the issue with the show had a lot to do with the story being framed around new characters, namely Special Agent Cecilia “Lala” Dominguez.
The main mistake NCIS: Origins made was immediately establishing that Gibbs’s origin story would revolve around Lala.
(Art Streiber/CBS)
However, sticking with the series has paid off, with things finally falling into place.
Lala was never an unlikable character. What bothered a lot of viewers was that the focus on Lala and Gibbs didn’t make sense at the time.
Well, thirteen episodes in, the real issues are obvious now, and it took a massive twist to see things clearly.

While Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly reign supreme, Sean Murray as Timothy McGee is not far behind with his acting chops. He has a career spanning more than three decades and has been part of the show for nearly 20 years now.

Of all the procedural crime shows that have had an impact on pop culture, CSI and NCIS have to be at the very top of the list. Both series have managed to keep their audiences hooked and a part of their ever-growing fandom since their debut. Considering the shelf life of a show these days, that has to be a feat in itself.

However, the success of NCIS is not entirely to the credit of its fan investment and the scriptwriters coming up with innovative storylines. The character chemistry plays a huge role in making the show’s cast instantly feel like family – to each other and to the fans. However, one beloved actor found it was time to leave the nest and, after 12 years, found her way back home again.
