Could “Without a Trace” be the next beloved crime procedural to get the TV reboot treatment? Series creator Hank Steinberg has “some notions” about what it could look like should he get the green light.

The original “Without a Trace” ran from 2002 and 2009 on CBS, following the cases of a missing persons unit of the FBI in New York City. The series stars Anthony Lapaglia, Poppy Montgomery, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Enrique Murciano and Roselyn Sánchez. The show won an Emmy Award for guest actor in a drama series for Charles S. Dutton in 2003 as well as the Emmy Award for outstanding art direction.

“If I had it my way, it might be more character-driven, shorter order, one case of the year kind of thing,” Steinberg told TheWrap in a recent interview. “That’s the way I would approach it if I can get the entities that own the material to go along with it.

Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light took top honors at the 2025 International Cinephile Society (Ics) Awards, winning best picture, director, and ensemble. Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light” triumphed at the 2025 International Cinephile Society (Ics) Awards, winning best picture, director and ensemble.

“All We Imagine as Light” world premiered at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the grand prize of the festival, along with a flurry of international awards. It also went on earn nominations at the Golden Globes and the BAFTA’s, among others.

The International Cinephile Society praised Kapadia’s film for highlighting “the voices, the faces, the night-lit trains of vibrant modern India.” The film revolves around a trip of women from different generations who form a quiet sisterhood to find their own peace amidst daunting personal and cultural issues.

“Nickel Boys,” RaMell Ross’s Oscar-nominated drama about Black teenagers caged in an abusive reform school, took best adapted screenplay honors for Ross and Joslyn Barnes, who wrote the script based on the book by Colson Whitehead.

In a coup for Bleecker Street, the distributor has acquired US rights to Rob Reiner’s mockumentary sequel Spinal Tap II: The End Continues and the original 1984 cult classic This Is Spinal Tap.

Keke Palmer, Taraji P. Henson, Cynthia Erivo, and Teyana Taylor were among the many stars at the 2025 Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards on Thursday afternoon (February 27) at Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles.

The annual event, which had the “Scene and Unseen” theme this year, honored Cynthia, Teyana, Marla Gibbs, and Raamla Mohamed. The event is “spotlighting the stories, performances, and contributions that often go overlooked, even as they shape the fabric of the entertainment industry.”

The 40th anniversary Film Independent Spirit Awards got underway Saturday afternoon, and plenty of stars and filmmakers from the indie world walked the blue carpet ahead of the ceremony. In addition to host Aidy Bryant, presenters include Kathryn Hahn, Walton Goggins, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Natasha Lyonne, Danielle Deadwyler, Alana Haim, Questlove, Hunter Schafer and more.

Indie movies are getting the spotlight at the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards and we’re recapping all of the celebs who showed up on the red carpet!

The afternoon awards show is being held on Saturday (February 22) at the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles.

SNL‘s Aidy Bryant is hosting the show for the second year in a row and you can live stream the event on YouTube. Anora and I Saw the TV Glow lead the film nominations with five nods each while Shogun leads the television nominations with five nods as well.

Before the Oscars light up Hollywood, the Film Independent Spirit Awards is bringing everyone down to the beach. Its annual celebration has been hosted at the Santa Monica Pier for many years, but 2025’s festivities there hold particular reverence, as just a little over a month ago, the area around this setting was ablaze from wildfires.

As serious as this tragedy was, the Spirit Awards, with “SNL” alumna and “Shrill” creator Aidy Bryant back as host, are sure to bring some much-needed levity to a city and community devastated by these recent natural disasters. Bryant will be joined by fellow “SNL” alumna and recent 50th Anniversary standout Molly Shannon, who serves as this year’s Honorary Chair. The 16th annual African American Film Critics Association (Aafca) Awards brought together industry figures to recognize Black artists and filmmakers. Tyler Perry made a brief stop in Los Angeles to present the Beacon Award to Nicole Avant, producer of The Six Triple Eight, before flying out again the same night.

“There’s so many attacks on who we are, what our stories are,” Perry said on stage, stressing the importance of supporting Black storytellers. He described Avant as “Hollywood royalty,” highlighting her role as the daughter of philanthropist Jacqueline Avant and music executive Clarence Avant.

Avant expressed appreciation for receiving the honor, saying her parents would have been proud. “I’m sure they are beaming down. My mom would always tell me to go out in the world and be the light. Choose which side you’re on, and then play ball,” she said.

Tyler Perry made a special trip to Los Angeles to present his friend Nicole Avant with the Beacon Award at the 16th annual African American Film Critics Association Awards.

“I don’t know why I’m working like I’m still broke,” Perry joked about arriving at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel straight from the airport, then hopping back on the plane when the show was over.

But the quick roundtrip was necessary to support Aafca’s mission of uplifting Black storytellers — “especially in this climate when there’s so many attacks on who we are, what our stories are,” Perry said — and to salute Avant, who he emphasized is “Hollywood royalty” as the daughter of the late Jacqueline Avant, a philanthropist, and Clarence Avant, the music executive known as “The Black Godfather.”

On the red carpet, Nicole Avant told Variety her parents would be proud to see her receive this specific honor.

Attention industryites, the final stretch of awards season is here and it’s all leading up to Hollywood’s biggest night with the 97th annual Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre. Sing Sing dominated this year’s African American Film Critics Association Awards, taking home a leading three prizes for Colman Domingo (Best Actor), Clarence Maclin (Best Supporting Actor), and Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar (Best Screenplay). The movie about the real-life Sing Sing Correctional Facility in New York is up for three Oscars on March 2: Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Song (“Like a Bird”).

Nickel Boys also claimed a pair of top trophies, for Best Picture and RaMell Ross (Best Director). It’s nominated for two Oscars (Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay) for its retelling of the Colson Whitehead novel about a 1960s abusive reform school in Florida. Notable Aafca Best Picture winners throughout history include American Fiction (2024), Black Panther (2018), Get Out (2017), and Moonlight (2016).

The Piano Lesson, which was skunked at the Oscars, made due with two Aafca wins on Wednesday night for Danielle Deadwyler (Best Supporting Actress) and Best Ensemble.

Molly Shannon is making moves from the milestone SNL50 celebration in New York to the Spirit Awards on the beach in Santa Monica.

The veteran star has been tapped to serve as honorary chair at this Saturday’s awards ceremony from Film Independent. Amazon MGM Studios’ adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Nickel Boys emerged as the top winner at the 25th Black Reel Awards. The film earned six honors during Monday’s virtual ceremony, including Outstanding Film and Outstanding Director for RaMell Ross.

Produced by Joslyn Barnes, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and David Levin, Nickel Boys also received awards for Outstanding Screenplay, Outstanding Emerging Director, Outstanding First Screenplay, and Outstanding Cinematography. Amazon MGM Studios’ Nickel Boys won a leading six awards Monday at the Black Reel Awards, including the group’s marquee Outstanding Film Award and Outstanding Director for RaMell Ross.

The awards, celebrating their 25th edition, honors the year’s best in Black cinematic excellence, were handed out Monday in a virtual ceremony.

Nickel Boys, adapted from Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and nominated for the Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay Oscars, also won tonight for Outstanding Screenplay, Outstanding Emerging Director, Outstanding First Screenplay and Outstanding Cinematography.

Edward Berger, hot from his double-whammy Best Film and Outstanding British Film wins for Conclave at the Ee BAFTA Film Awards, wanted to stop by the Searchlight after-party at Soho House’s Greek Street to laud Rising Star winner David Jonsson.

“He’s not a show-off,” an impressed Berger tells me after greeting Jonsson.

“[It] tells you a lot. Feet on the ground, incredibly laid back and I wanted to congratulate him,” Berger adds as he watches the Rye Lane and Alien: Romulus actor being feted by a group that included Olivia Homan, his agent at United Talent, and Ellie Norton his publicist at Track Publicity.

Berger notes that he was taken by a comment Jonsson made during his acceptance speech.

“Star? I don’t know, but rising, I guess,” was the Jonsson line that Berger favored.

“I liked his humility,” the filmmaker tells me.

Conclave and The Brutalist tied with four wins at the 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards, announced on January 16th during a ceremony hosted by David Tennant. Anora, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Perez, A Real Pain, Wicked, and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Foul each picked up two awards, and David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus) was the recipient of this year’s Ee Rising Star Award.

Whatever else happened at this year’s Bafta ceremony, it provided us with a very exciting star-is-born moment. Mikey Madison broke ahead of a densely packed crowd of best-actress contenders (in which only the hapless Karla Sofía Gascón was really lagging behind) to win the Bafta for her wonderfully smart, funny, charismatic and vulnerable performance in Sean Baker’s Anora, playing a New York table dancer who gets a Vegas wedding to a Russian oligarch’s son. The 2025 Oscar race took a detour across the pond on Sunday as the BAFTA Film Awards were handed out, with the hometown favorite Conclave finishing on top.

Conclave came in with a leading 12 nominations, and it finished with four overall wins — Best Film, Best British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing — on an evening when voters spread the wealth. The Brutalist scored for Best Director (Brady Corbet) and Best Actor (Adrien Brody). The Best Actress race featured a surprise, with Anora star Mikey Madison upsetting Golden Globe and Critics Choice winner Demi Moore (The Substance). It was an otherwise quiet night for Anora, with just one other win for Best Casting after a scorching weeklong stretch that saw the film rack up top prizes from the Critics Choice, Directors Guild, Producers Guild, and Writers Guild.

Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) and Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) continued their domination of the supporting categories.

The Ee BAFTA Film Awards happened this evening at the Royal Festival Hall in London, hosted once more by David Tennant.

Poking fun at Trump during his monologue, Tennant also offered the usual celebrity gags and had several stars singing part of The Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)".

Cautioning audience members that there would not be an intermission as with nominated epic The Brutalist, Tennant also admonished winners to "keep your speeches the opposite of your films: nice and short."

A somewhat surprising addition to the night (though perhaps not given their presence on the soundtracks for both Better Man and Anora) was a performance of "Greatest Day" by Take That.

Mikey Madison is the Leading Actress winner at the 2025 BAFTAs!

The 25-year-old Anora star won the big prize at the 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards at The Royal Festival Hall on Sunday (February 16) in London, England.

Mikey was up against some stiff competition for the award. She beat out Cynthia Erivo in Wicked, Marianne Jean-Baptiste in Hard Truths, Saoirse Ronan in The Outrun, Demi Moore in The Substance, and the controversial Karla Sofía Gascón in Emilia Pérez.

As the 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards got underway on Sunday in London, a slew of stars hit the red carpet. At a BAFTA Awards where there was no clear frontrunner going into the ceremony, British Academy voters chose to largely share the spoils when it came to handing out honors.

But only one could win the top prize of best film, and this year that went to “Conclave,” which had entered the night with the most number of nominations (11). Edward Berger’s Vatican thriller wound up tying with Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” with four BAFTA wins each. Of its four, the 3.5-hour American epic won leading actor for Adrien Brody and director for Corbet.

Meanwhile, there was a surprise when Mikey Madison was named leading actress for “Anora” (one of two wins for Sean Baker’s sex worker comedy), with “The Substance” star Demi Moore’s seem by many as sure bet. Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror instead took home one award, for makeup and hairstyling.

The American Film Institute (AFI) has officially announced the eight filmmakers for the upcoming AFI Dww+ Class of 2026, where each will go through the production cycle of a short film. IndieWire shares the class exclusively here.

Veteran film director Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths is a powerful drama about two sisters, Pansy and Chantelle, primarily focusing on unresolved trauma and its impact on family dynamics. I felt that the film is wrongfully categorized as a comedy-drama; the slight element of comedy present is deeply rooted in the discomfort of a character, and it is not really the sort of thing you’re supposed to laugh at. Marianne Jean-Baptiste offers a class in acting with the range of emotions she demonstrated as Pansy, and Michele Austin’s calm presence as Chantelle adds balance and warmth. Hard Truths is a family drama where a lot remains unsaid and unaddressed, and one day the bottled-up feelings explode, and what follows is what the film attempts to get at.

After delaying its awards ceremony for several weeks following the wildfires in Los Angeles, AARP the Magazine announced the winners of its annual Movies for Grownups Awards on Saturday, with A Complete Unknown going home as the big winner.

The show, hosted by Alan Cumming at the Beverly Wilshire, celebrates TV and film for older audiences, and this year also presented a career achievement award to Glenn Close. Though Conclave came into the ceremony with the most nominations, the film left empty handed. A Complete Unknown took best picture as Demi Moore and Adrien Brody won the top acting prizes, and Shogun was recognized as best TV series.

The 30th annual Critics Choice Awards took place on Friday, February 7, at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Three films—Wicked, Emilia Pérez, and The Substance—each won three awards. However, none of them claimed the top honor of Best Picture, which went to Anora. Interestingly, Anora didn’t win in any other category that night.

Jon M. Chu, director of Wicked, won Best Director, making him only the third filmmaker to win the award for a musical. The others were Baz Luhrmann for Moulin Rouge! and Damien Chazelle for La La Land. Chazelle later won an Oscar for directing La La Land, but Luhrmann and Chu didn’t even receive Oscar nominations for their films. Wicked also took home awards for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.

Emilia Pérez won Best Foreign Language Film, Best Original Song for “El Mal”, and Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña.

Wicked and Conclave went into the 2025 Critics Choice Awards with the most nominations, but voters (myself included) spread the wealth around, showering Wicked, Conclave, The Brutalist, Anora, The Substance (congrats Demi Moore!), and Emilia Perez with film awards. On the TV drama side, Shogun earned Best Drama, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress awards. Hacks cleaned up in the TV comedy categories, scoring Best Comedy, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress.

The Critics Choice Awards were held on February 7, 2025 with Chelsea Handler returning as host for the third time. Handler spent time during the opening of her monologue to thank first responders for their incredible work during the Los Angeles wildfires. She also thanked Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni for providing a distraction from waking up every day not knowing what news will disappoint or horrify us.

Critics Choice Awards 2025: The award season continues with another much-coveted award night. It is the 30th Annual Critics Choice Awards, where both films and television artists are awarded. Shogun has secured quite a few awards, including Best Drama Series. Deadpool & Wolverine and Emilia Perez, too, bagged two top awards at the ceremony. Keep scrolling for the complete winners list.

For the uninitiated, the ceremony was held at the Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport on February 7. It was live-streamed on E! According to reports, it was supposed to be held on January 12 but was postponed due to the California fires.
