Could “Without a Trace” be the next beloved crime procedural to get the TV reboot treatment? Series creator Hank Steinberg has “some notions” about what it could look like should he get the green light.
The original “Without a Trace” ran from 2002 and 2009 on CBS, following the cases of a missing persons unit of the FBI in New York City. The series stars Anthony Lapaglia, Poppy Montgomery, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Enrique Murciano and Roselyn Sánchez. The show won an Emmy Award for guest actor in a drama series for Charles S. Dutton in 2003 as well as the Emmy Award for outstanding art direction.
“If I had it my way, it might be more character-driven, shorter order, one case of the year kind of thing,” Steinberg told TheWrap in a recent interview. “That’s the way I would approach it if I can get the entities that own the material to go along with it.

This year's Academy Awards saw Mikey Madison's work in Anora become the 100th performance to take the Best Actress Oscar. There's much to say about this race, good and bad, and I'm currently preparing some stuff on Demi Moore and Fernanda Torres. But today, I would like to reflect on the category beyond the five women AMPAS chose to recognize. Because, in my opinion, the year's best performance bar none, as well as the film which contains it, was absent from the Oscars altogether. For the season's last Almost There, I invite you to take a trip into Mike Leigh's cinema, a world of deep character work and improvisation, collaborative writing and ensemble dynamics, tonal whiplash and social observation. Before the Oscars light up Hollywood, the Film Independent Spirit Awards is bringing everyone down to the beach. Its annual celebration has been hosted at the Santa Monica Pier for many years, but 2025’s festivities there hold particular reverence, as just a little over a month ago, the area around this setting was ablaze from wildfires.
As serious as this tragedy was, the Spirit Awards, with “SNL” alumna and “Shrill” creator Aidy Bryant back as host, are sure to bring some much-needed levity to a city and community devastated by these recent natural disasters. Bryant will be joined by fellow “SNL” alumna and recent 50th Anniversary standout Molly Shannon, who serves as this year’s Honorary Chair. Other presenters for the evening include Tadanobu Asano, Carrie Coon, Danielle Deadwyler, Mark & Jay Duplass, Walton Goggins, Kathryn Hahn, Alana Haim, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Patti LuPone, Melanie Lynskey, Natasha Lyonne, Questlove, Edgar Ramirez, Hunter Schafer,...

The 16th annual African American Film Critics Association (Aafca) Awards brought together industry figures to recognize Black artists and filmmakers. Tyler Perry made a brief stop in Los Angeles to present the Beacon Award to Nicole Avant, producer of The Six Triple Eight, before flying out again the same night.
“There’s so many attacks on who we are, what our stories are,” Perry said on stage, stressing the importance of supporting Black storytellers. He described Avant as “Hollywood royalty,” highlighting her role as the daughter of philanthropist Jacqueline Avant and music executive Clarence Avant.
Nicole Avant Reflects on Her Influences
Avant expressed appreciation for receiving the honor, saying her parents would have been proud. “I’m sure they are beaming down. My mom would always tell me to go out in the world and be the light. Choose which side you’re on, and then play ball,” she said.

Tyler Perry made a special trip to Los Angeles to present his friend Nicole Avant with the Beacon Award at the 16th annual African American Film Critics Association Awards.
“I don’t know why I’m working like I’m still broke,” Perry joked about arriving at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel straight from the airport, then hopping back on the plane when the show was over.
But the quick roundtrip was necessary to support Aafca’s mission of uplifting Black storytellers — “especially in this climate when there’s so many attacks on who we are, what our stories are,” Perry said — and to salute Avant, who he emphasized is “Hollywood royalty” as the daughter of the late Jacqueline Avant, a philanthropist, and Clarence Avant, the music executive known as “The Black Godfather.”
On the red carpet, Nicole Avant told Variety her parents would be proud to see her receive this specific honor.

“I have to be honest, things, they feel really bad right now,” comedian Amber Ruffin said in her intro monologue at the 16th Annual African American Film Critics Association Awards, which she hosted in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. “Between the rollback of diversity, equity and inclusion, the price of eggs and the price of Cowboy Carter tickets, it’s insane. Edward Berger, hot from his double-whammy Best Film and Outstanding British Film wins for Conclave at the Ee BAFTA Film Awards, wanted to stop by the Searchlight after-party at Soho House’s Greek Street to laud Rising Star winner David Jonsson.
“He’s not a show-off,” an impressed Berger tells me after greeting Jonsson.
“[It] tells you a lot. Feet on the ground, incredibly laid back and I wanted to congratulate him,” Berger adds as he watches the Rye Lane and Alien: Romulus actor being feted by a group that included Olivia Homan, his agent at United Talent, and Ellie Norton his publicist at Track Publicity.
Berger notes that he was taken by a comment Jonsson made during his acceptance speech.
“Star? I don’t know, but rising, I guess,” was the Jonsson line that Berger favored.

The 2025 Oscar race took a detour across the pond on Sunday as the BAFTA Film Awards were handed out, with the hometown favorite Conclave finishing on top.
Conclave came in with a leading 12 nominations, and it finished with four overall wins — Best Film, Best British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing — on an evening when voters spread the wealth. The Brutalist scored for Best Director (Brady Corbet) and Best Actor (Adrien Brody). The Best Actress race featured a surprise, with Anora star Mikey Madison upsetting Golden Globe and Critics Choice winner Demi Moore (The Substance). It was an otherwise quiet night for Anora, with just one other win for Best Casting after a scorching weeklong stretch that saw the film rack up top prizes from the Critics Choice, Directors Guild, Producers Guild, and Writers Guild.
Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) and Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) continued their domination of the supporting categories.

The Ee BAFTA Film Awards happened this evening at the Royal Festival Hall in London, hosted once more by David Tennant.
Poking fun at Trump during his monologue, Tennant also offered the usual celebrity gags and had several stars singing part of The Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)".
Cautioning audience members that there would not be an intermission as with nominated epic The Brutalist, Tennant also admonished winners to "keep your speeches the opposite of your films: nice and short."
A somewhat surprising addition to the night (though perhaps not given their presence on the soundtracks for both Better Man and Anora) was a performance of "Greatest Day" by Take That.
As for the winners, it was a good night for Conclave, which won Best Film, another Adapted Screenplay trophy for writer Peter Straughan, Best British Film and Editing and A Real Pain, which went home with Original Screenplay for...

At a BAFTA Awards where there was no clear frontrunner going into the ceremony, British Academy voters chose to largely share the spoils when it came to handing out honors.
But only one could win the top prize of best film, and this year that went to “Conclave,” which had entered the night with the most number of nominations (11). Edward Berger’s Vatican thriller wound up tying with Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” with four BAFTA wins each. Of its four, the 3.5-hour American epic won leading actor for Adrien Brody and director for Corbet.
Meanwhile, there was a surprise when Mikey Madison was named leading actress for “Anora” (one of two wins for Sean Baker’s sex worker comedy), with “The Substance” star Demi Moore’s seem by many as sure bet. Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror instead took home one award, for makeup and hairstyling.

The 78th British Film Academy awards are heading our way tonight – here’s what you need to know about the big night at the Royal Festival Hall
With each passing year the attention paid to the Bafta film awards turns up a notch, as campaigns jostle and reposition themselves in the quest for the real prize: an Academy Award. The Oscar race is pretty open this year, even more so after the Emilia Pérez debacle, but with its British centre of gravity and slightly differing nominations list, the Baftas have their own dynamic. Hence the Baftas can sometimes seem to be a fairground-mirror reflection of the American contest, or (looked at the other way) an assertion of a similar but separate cultural identity.
The most obvious example of this is the strong showing for Belfast rap comedy Kneecap, which could walk off with a fistful of Baftas, but failed to...

We have some suggestions if you’re looking for an awards contender to watch on streaming or video on demand this weekend. Our list of movies includes a Best Picture nominee top pick that recently became available for home viewing; two other Oscar-nominated new releases, one on streaming and one on VOD; a movie that wasn’t nominated for an Oscar but could have been; and a past Oscar nominee that would make for a nice double feature with the top pick.
Top pick: Nickel Boys
Director RaMell Ross’ adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay for Ross and co-writer Joslyn Barnes. It’s a coming-of-age story about two Black adolescents, Elwood (Ethan Herisse) and Turner (Brandon Wilson), at an abusive reform school in 1960s Florida, and what they do to get by and get out. The last two years of the BAFTA Awards told opposite stories of how Britain’s most prestigious film honors correspond with their American counterpart, the Oscars. In 2023, they went wholly in their own direction, voting differently from AMPAS in all major categories — showering Edward Berger’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” with gold and all but ignoring Oscar darling “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Last year, however, they matched the Oscars in every category save for best visual effects, as Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” ran the table on both sides of the pond. The BAFTAs, in other words, are either the most crucial Oscar precursor or the most rogue; either way, pundits watch them with bated breath.
When BAFTA voters go their own way, it’s often in favor of contenders close to home. Berger’s follow-up to “All Quiet,” the well-liked Vatican thriller “Conclave,” is the only British...

Despite the recent massive shakeup in the Oscar race after Anora took down The Brutalist at the Critics Choice, Directors Guild, and Producers Guild awards, look for The Brutalist to walk away with the most trophies at the 78th annual BAFTA Awards this weekend, according to Gold Derby’s winner predictions.
Both movies are going head-to-head for Best Film, where the other three nominees are A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez.
The Brutalist, which scored nine total BAFTA bids, is now forecasted to dominate the field by winning five trophies: Best Film, Best Director for Brady Corbet, Best Actor for Adrien Brody, Best Cinematography, and Best Score. The period piece tells the story of a Holocaust survivor who hopes to achieve the American Dream.

Veteran film director Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths is a powerful drama about two sisters, Pansy and Chantelle, primarily focusing on unresolved trauma and its impact on family dynamics. I felt that the film is wrongfully categorized as a comedy-drama; the slight element of comedy present is deeply rooted in the discomfort of a character, and it is not really the sort of thing you’re supposed to laugh at. Marianne Jean-Baptiste offers a class in acting with the range of emotions she demonstrated as Pansy, and Michele Austin’s calm presence as Chantelle adds balance and warmth. Hard Truths is a family drama where a lot remains unsaid and unaddressed, and one day the bottled-up feelings explode, and what follows is what the film attempts to get at.
Spoiler Alert
Why did Pansy break down after visiting her mother’s grave?
Pansy struggled to enjoy life. She constantly complained...

More than 10,600 registered Gold Derby users voted for the 2025 Gold Derby Film Award winners — an all-time record — and they picked Brazil’s political biopic I’m Still Here as Best Picture. That makes it just the second non-English-language film to take top honors, following South Korea’s Parasite, which prevailed five years ago. Scroll down for our list of winners in all 22 categories and to watch many individual acceptance speech videos.
I’m Still Here defeated an eclectic group of rivals for Best Picture, including fellow international films All We Imagine as Light and Emilia Pérez, big-budget blockbusters Dune: Part Two and Wicked, indie comedy Anora, epic immigration tale The Brutalist, tennis love triangle Challengers, papal thriller Conclave, and body-horror satire The Substance. The victory was so decisive, in fact, that I’m Still Here won all four of the awards it was nominated for, also claiming Best Actress (Fernanda Torres), Best Adapted Screenplay,...

The 30th annual Critics Choice Awards took place on Friday, February 7, at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Three films—Wicked, Emilia Pérez, and The Substance—each won three awards. However, none of them claimed the top honor of Best Picture, which went to Anora. Interestingly, Anora didn’t win in any other category that night.
Jon M. Chu, director of Wicked, won Best Director, making him only the third filmmaker to win the award for a musical. The others were Baz Luhrmann for Moulin Rouge! and Damien Chazelle for La La Land. Chazelle later won an Oscar for directing La La Land, but Luhrmann and Chu didn’t even receive Oscar nominations for their films. Wicked also took home awards for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.
Emilia Pérez won Best Foreign Language Film, Best Original Song for “El Mal”, and Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña.
