Nancy Savoca's 1991 period coming-of-age romantic drama Dogfight is a massively underrated gem from the 1990s American independent film movement. Following a decade of blockbuster excess in the 1980s, the 1990s saw an explosion in low-budget independent moviemaking led by filmmakers such as Steven Soderbergh, Richard Linklater, Quentin Tarantino, and Kevin Smith. Although the 1990s independent film movement produced countless high-profile auteurs, many prominent directors from that era have fallen out of the public consciousness. Filmmakers such as Savoca, Carl Franklin, and Whit Stillman were all integral members of the 1990s independent film movement, yet their films remain largely unknown to modern audiences.

The noir genre has been popular since the earliest days of cinema and has remained just as popular for good reason. While historical context and technical advancements may force viewers to reflect on older projects from a different perspective, a clever and compelling mystery has the power to stand the test of time. It’s often a genre that inspires the audience to work with the characters as they examine clues at the same time, making the conclusion of a given case much more enthralling. While the genre is often associated with the work of classic sleuths like Humphrey Bogart’s Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon, director Carl Franklin managed to take a fun new spin on the genre with his 1995 neo-noir Devil in a Blue Dress. Although it is remembered for the iconic performance by Denzel Washington at its center, Devil in a Blue Dress gave Don Cheadle his scene-stealing breakout role.

Over more than 40 years in Hollywood, Denzel Washington has only ever reprised one of his characters: Robert McCall of The Equalizer trilogy. Nearly 30 years ago however, there was another potential franchise in the works for him that he, the studio, and director Carl Franklin were all eager to see work.

Denzel Washington has been one of the most respected Hollywood actors since his earliest roles in films like Glory, Cry Freedom and The Mighty Quinn. Demonstrating an impressive range across genres, from war and drama to action and science fiction, few leading stars can command the screen as well as the Malcolm X star. Arguably his best genre after his dramatic roles is thrillers, where he has been cast as detectives, journalists and federal agents.
Denzel Washington has one of the strongest careers in modern Hollywood, being incredibly selective when it comes to scripts and collaborators. Playing the roles of characters from literature, history and original scripts, the actor is almost always at his best as a heroic cop. That said, he isn't beyond playing villains, and the thriller genre has brought out the best of his talents, ensuring his status as one of the film industry's most recognized and acclaimed stars.

Carl Franklin's "Devil in a Blue Dress" was exactly two years ahead of its time, almost to the day. The director's adaptation of the first installment in Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins series of noir novels would've been perfectly positioned in late 1997 to capitalize on the slow rolling box office success of Curtis Hanson's "L.A. Confidential." Both films were September releases building on buzzy debuts at the late summer Toronto International Film Festival, but "L.A. Confidential" proved zeitgeisty in ways that eluded "Devil in a Blue Dress." It kicked off a noir renaissance that saw national and local film critics writing up lists of must-see black-and-white crime flicks from the 1940s and '50s for their readers. Suddenly, mainstream moviegoers were up on terminology like "femme fatale," and eager to watch Humphrey Bogart movies that weren't "Casablanca.

The first episode of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” needs to accomplish a lot. There’s setting the scene, introducing the Menendez family (beyond dysfunctional), and portraying a brutal real-life slaying of José and Kitty by their sons, Lyle and Erik. Oh, and then show the funeral, complete with a somber Milli Vanilli needle drop. (Which really happened.) That’s a lot of tone, but the anchor of the episode and of the season itself is the central murder.
“From the get-go, one of the things that Ryan [Murphy] said was that he wanted you to feel how awful that moment is, to remember that they’re murderers,” Episode 1 editor Peggy Tachdjian told Indiewire. “Because it sets up the whole season. He was like, ‘I want everyone to always remember that the murder was brutal.”
The sequence is remarkable in its unflinching recreation of the violence but also of the cold bloodness.

King Kong did not, in fact, have, er, doo-doo on Denzel Washington at the turn of the 21st century. Fresh off his second Oscar win (and his first as a lead performer) for playing dirty LAPD detective Alonzo Harris in Antoine Fuqua's "Training Day," the capital-m Movie Star made a habit of working with his old friends over the decade that followed. Indeed, if one were to run through his resume, one would note that most of Washington's films in the 2000s were directed by either one of his former collaborators or Denzel himself. Then again, if your pals were Spike Lee, Tony Scott, Jonathan Demme, and the under-appreciated Carl Franklin, you'd want to make all of your movies with them too.

America's fascination with serial killers has been an exploitable cultural phenomenon since long before the term was coined in the 1970s. People read books, wrote plays, and followed newspaper coverage of notorious murderers like Jack the Ripper, Charles Starkweather, and Richard Speck. A cold-blooded murder in any capacity is baffling enough to normal or normal-ish people; going on a wanton killing spree for kicks or because the lunar cycle is in the proper alignment is just bananas. How and why do minds break like this?
When a (one-time) master novelist like Thomas Harris or a naturalist like John McNaughton is asking these questions, there can be great value in examining the minds of monsters. When Jonathan Demme is adapting the former, there is also the opportunity to make a rewatchable, Oscar-winning classic of a film. When Ryan Murphy is at the helm, you're going to wind up with a lot...

It was series co-creator Ryan Murphy’s choice to show just how graphic the shotgun murders were at the beginning of “Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story,” director Carl Franklin told TheWrap.
“Ryan had a lot of specific ideas about how he wanted to do this,” said Franklin, who helmed the first two episodes of the Netflix series, as well as that of Murphy’s “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” on FX.
“Ryan wanted to make sure that people understood the brutality of the crimes, and to establish that early on. Because it is a dialectic in a lot of ways, it’s a ‘Rashomon’ kind of a thing, where the young men have their version of what happened. And then later, we see what Kitty and Jose felt about the situation, or based on the information that was available to Ryan and [co-creator] Ian Brennan.”
Franklin continued, “The violence,...

Last year, Netflix’s true-crime limited series “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” received 13 Emmy nominations and scored a major win for supporting actress Niecy Nash-Betts. That came after the victories for lead actor Evan Peters at the Golden Globes and Nash-Betts at the Critics Choice Awards. Flash-forward to 2024, and the second installment of the franchise, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” now hopes to follow in the award-winning footsteps of its predecessor.
This project tells the story of how and why Lyle Menendez (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) and Erik Menendez (Cooper Koch) killed their parents, José Menendez (Javier Bardem) and Kitty Menendez (Chloë Sevigny), in their affluent Beverly Hills home in 1989. Other main cast members include Ari Graynor as Erik’s lawyer Leslie Abramson and Nathan Lane as journalist Dominick Dunne.

“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” is asking viewers to be the jury for the Menéndez brothers. The infamous Beverly Hills siblings murdered their parents in 1989, and were convicted in 1996, but today’s more comprehensive understanding of sexual abuse has sparked renewed interest in the case.
“[The show’s] about the consequences of trauma,” Javier Bardem, who plays the father, José, told Variety at the series Los Angeles premiere on Monday. “Unless [it is] properly addressed and healed, it’s going to have a huge, horrible, dramatic effect on generations to come.”
The cast and creatives of the series described its “Rashaman” approach to the story.
“We wanted to really present a lot of different points of view, and then let the audience sort of decide what to take,” writer and producer David McMillan said. “We are talking about real people … many of them are still alive. We want to make sure that our...

“Monsters” Episode 5, “The Hurt Man,” is dedicated solely to Erik Menendez’s point of view. Sitting in a prison meeting room, talking to his attorney Leslie Abramson (Ari Graynor), Erik (Cooper Koch) recounts “all of that” — everything in his life that led he and his brother, Lyle (Nicholas Alexander Chavez), to murder their parents, José (Javier Bardem) and Kitty Menendez (Chloë Sevigny). And he does. Erik remembers the four different ways his father raped him as an 8 year old. He remembers the childlike names he gave each version — simple, evocative labels like “knees” and “mouth massage.” He remembers the “real torture” of his years spent being sexually, physically, and emotionally abused by his dad: “to still love him.” He remembers how their mother allowed it to happen, even sensing she was jealous of her husband’s obscene relationship with their son. Near the end, Erik remembers when he realized what...

There was never a time when Denzel Washington wasn't on a hot streak. Not only does Washington have a talent for picking interesting or unique projects, but he also has the acting acumen to back up whatever he selects. Even when he's decided to make a mainstream genre thriller, clunky crime flick, or brutal, brainless actioner, he is always present, bringing nuance and texture to his performances. It also helps that Washington has become a go-to collaborator for multiple talented directors, having worked with Spike Lee, Antoine Fuqua, Carl Franklin, Jonathan Demme, and both Ridley and Tony Scott multiple times apiece. He has also taken it upon himself to produce 10 movies based on August Wilson's plays, two of which have already been made.
Washington's hot streak in the mid-1990s included, in a row, "Much Ado About Nothing," "The Pelican Brief," "Philadelphia," "Crimson Tide," Virtuosity," "Devil in a Blue Dress,...

Charlie Hunnam will star in “Monster” Season 3 at Netflix as notorious serial killer Ed Gein.
Series co-creator Ryan Murphy made the announcement onstage during a promotional event in Los Angeles for “Monster” Season 2, which focuses on the Menendez brothers and the murder of their parents. The first season of the anthology series focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

José and Kitty Menendez make their Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story debut in the final trailer for the Netflix anthology series, unmasking the now-deceased parents of the real-life brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez.
Following a teaser trailer that hinted at cracks in the family, and the first official trailer focusing on the Menendez brothers after their parents were killed, the new nearly three-minute look at Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s latest Monsters installment brings José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez into a dark spotlight. The 10-episode season releases Sept. 19 on Netflix.
The trailer opens with a tension-building conversation between Barden’s José and son Lyle, portrayed by Nicholas Chavez, where José compares his son to a disobeying dog. “I think that I didn’t hit you hard enough,” says José, before slapping his son across the face. “So as a father, that is my fault. The new series chronicles the case of the real-life brothers who were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez.

As Lyle (Nicholas Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch) get out of their car with shotguns in hand, Dr. Jerome Oziel (Dallas Roberts) says, “I’m going to need you to walk me through what happened.” As he talks, Lyle and Erik enter their house. Only flashes of gunfire are seen next.
“Part of this process is the two of you reconnecting, growing closer as brothers,” Dr. Oziel continues.
“Erik and I killed our parents together, so I’d say that makes us pretty close,” Lyle counters while sitting on the therapist’s couch with his brother.

Ryan Murphy is putting Chloë Sevigny and Javier Bardem in the forefront for his latest true-crime anthology installment “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.”
Murphy may no longer be under his Netflix overall deal — he’s at Disney now — but the Menendez “Monsters” will be on Netflix as the anthology series pre-dates the move. The Jeffrey Dahmer “Monster” is Netflix’s third-most-watched season of (English-language) television in its recorded history.
This second installment captures the murders of couple Mary Louise “Kitty” (Sevigny) and José Menendez (Bardem), who were killed by their sons Lyle (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch). The boys were convicted in 1996 after arguing that they killed their parents over abuse.
The official synopsis for the series reads: “While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, the brothers claimed — and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the...

FX is diving into the brutal and complex story of Aaron Hernandez with the first trailer for “American Sports Story.” The limited series will premiere on FX on Sept. 17 and will be available to stream on Hulu.

Being all things to all people is impossible. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try to live up to people’s expectations, your efforts find a way of sabotaging your best intentions from the inside out. The pressure to perform regardless of your mental well-being often follows athletes like a relentless ghost. All it takes is one slip-up to send you on a downward spiral. In the case of Aaron Hernandez, the gridiron warrior learns the hard way that football dreams and crime don’t mix.
