Julian Glover is probably one of the only actors who asked to be killed off of "Game of Thrones." Glover admitted as much at Montreal Comic Con in 2018 (per ScreenHub), explaining that he wanted his Grand Maester Pycelle to bite the bullet before his season 6 demise. A vital character in George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice And Fire" series, on screen Pycelle became one of the most extraneous background players as the HBO adaptation wore on.
"I didn't want to do [season 6] because I realized I was being completely dismissed as a character," Glover told IGN ahead of the fantasy series' ending. Speaking of Lena Headey's character, he recalled: "Cersei ticked me off all the time, and I never had any comeback. So that wasn't any fun to play." The actor made a similar statement at the aforementioned pop culture convention, reportedly explaining that his character in the...

Character actors are an interesting bunch. They are often key speaking roles in plotlines which aren't usually at the forefront of the story, yet their presence is unforgettable. Whether they fade out of the plot or are killed off as soon as their role in the story has expired, the characters they portray can often be so signature that it grants these performers a wealth of future roles of similar weight. In the case of Julian Glover, it's been a lifetime of being "That Guy" in many franchises.

This article contains spoilers for many major fantasy TV shows! For every unforgettable moment in a fantasy TV show, there are just as many controversial moments that push viewers to their breaking point. Even the most popular fantastical TV series in history have included scenes that were so polarizing that audiences stop watching the show altogether. Typically, these plot points revolve around the introduction or exit of characters, as this can dramatically alter the series' dynamic and be devastating to witness. TV deaths often spark outrage when viewers feel that the character didn't deserve to be killed off and still had more to contribute.
There are many fantasy TV scenes that make no sense, but this is more excusable, as the complex magic systems and world-building in speculative fiction shows can become confusing. However, when a series makes a concrete and avoidable choice that alienates audience members, it's much more difficult to accept this.

Fantasy is a versatile genre since the creation of new worlds and magic systems allows writers and creators to establish new rules and logic that suit the storyline. However, this doesn't mean that fantasy TV shows are immune from adding plot points that make no sense and don't help further the overall narrative. Many of these choices have to do with the character's choices being inconsistent or the series breaking its own rules about how the fantastical elements work. Since speculative fiction fans are willing to suspend their disbelief, these shows sometimes push the boundaries of logic too far.
There are plenty of fantasy movie scenes that make no sense, and TV series are just as susceptible to these mistakes. Often, these confusing moments happen because there are so many contradicting storylines or there's an external element that's out of the writers' control. To compensate for actors suddenly leaving or...

It's been 20 years since the massive sword-and-sandals blockbuster, Troy, was released and became a box office hit with audiences. Wolfgang Petersen's spectacle was an all-star affair, featuring Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, Diane Kruger, Brian Cox, Sean Bean, Brendan Gleeson, and Peter O'Toole. While the film was ostensibly based on Homer's epic poem The Iliad from the eighth century BC, it deviates heavily from the source material — heavily enough that a recent video spent more than an hour dissecting the movie. Ancient Greek historian Roel Konijnendijk, a fellow and tutor at Oxford, broke Troy down for History Hit on YouTube.
Of course, Konijnendijk highlights some of the little, goofier historical inaccuracies throughout Troy. For instance, the placing of coins on a dead man's eyes during a funeral ritual. There are "some animals that definitely didn't exist in the Greek world," with the historian having a laugh at one particular scene.

It’s always exciting when a TV show takes a massive risk that really pays off, but it can be insanely frustrating when these surprising writing decisions fall flat on their face. While huge twists, impulsive character decisions, or unusual storytelling choices can keep things interesting, they also have the potential to alienate audiences and lead to storylines that the writers opt to quietly discard rather than continue telling an unpopular plot. This has been a problem across comedy, drama, and even fantasy series that have tried something new with their storyline, only to have viewers flat-out reject the risk.
Many of the best TV shows of all time have taken massive risks, only for them to not work out and have to backtrack on their storylines. This has seen previously deceased characters inexplicably return to life, established backstories being badly rewritten, or even final seasons that ruined the legacy...

While his appearances in Bridgerton and Wicked have made him a household name, Russell T Davies hopes to bring Jonathan Bailey to Doctor Who in an all-new role. Before joining Netflix's period drama as Anthony Bridgerton, Bailey portrayed Psi in the Doctor Who season 8 episode Time Heist, alongside Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor and Jenna Coleman's Clara Oswald. At the time of writing, Bailey had soared onto the big screen as Prince Fiyero in Wicked, the shallow student Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba encounters in her studies at Shiz University.
Recently, Davies revealed to Screen Rant that he hopes to bring Bailey back to the Whoniverse after recruiting Bridgerton co-star Nicola Coughlan to star in Doctor Who's 2024 Christmas special. To be a Game of Thrones fan is masochistic work. Because with every day that passes, the chances of ever seeing George R.R. Martin's written conclusion to his A Song of Ice and Fire series get smaller and smaller. Sure, the HBO iteration did, well, something with the author's road map and over-arching story plan. But whether or not it was a satisfying, nuanced ending to the story is another thing entirely, and up for contentious debate among fans.
The prolific-yet-meandering author has long brushed off worries about his completion of his Westerosi story as overblown. But in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the author admits that maybe those fans are right — maybe he won't finish the book. After all, as he admits: "Unfortunately, I am 13 years late."

Britain's television landscape has often been linked with gritty characters, compelling storylines, and complex dramas, with no genre embodying those traits quite like an iconic British spy series. The British fiction's fascination with spies and espionage can be traced back to Ian Fleming's iconic James Bond character from 1953, which garnered worldwide attention and acclaim. Though other countries produce quality works in the genre, the British versions tend to have a biting dialogue mixed with intricate, layered narratives that create some of the most intense, thrilling shows of all time.
Uniquely British spy series from older generations, such as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, shows the complexity of the genre and the underlying tension and psychological pressures that agents must endure on their missions. Modern series like the beloved Killing Eve show a different layer to the genre, with a more quirky and comical tone that is still punctuated with moments...

Per Deadline, Harden will join Sophie Turner and Kit Harington in a new horror film titled The Dreadful. The film also stars Laurence OFuarain (The Gentlemen) and Jonathan Howard (Thor: The Dark World). The film will reportedly be set during the War of the Roses, a period in which several civil wars were waged for control of the English throne. The Dreadful follows "Anne (Turner) and her sinister mother-in-law Morwen (Harden), who live a solitary, harsh life on the outskirts of society. Sometimes, a television series delivers a shocking moment by killing off what may seem like a main character. While some of these may be done for shock value, sometimes, the show also needs to do it to push things forward. A major character's death has a significant impact on the plot. Ned Stark's death in the first season of Game of Thrones is a great example.
Not only does it start a war between the North and the South, but it also sets Game of Thrones in motion. Similarly, Lost too has a significant death early in the show that holds significance. However, like Ned Stark in Game of Thrones, television shows often choose a great or beloved character to maximize the impact of their death.

At the beginning of Game of Thrones, Ned Stark seemed like a major player.

Olivia Hussey has had a long and storied career, acting in a variety of fantastic movies and TV shows for over five decades. Though Hussey is primarily known as a screen actress, her early career essentially kicked off in 1966 with a London stage production of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, where she acted opposite Vanessa Redgrave. Stage plays, movies, and television aren't Hussey's only acting credits, however, as she has had roles in three different Star Wars video games; Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, Star Wars: Force Commander, and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Gladiator's breakout success spawned a string of swords-and-sandals films like 300, King Arthur, and Alexander. Wolfgang Petersen's Troy also revived a genre that peaked during the golden age of cinema.
Netflix is removing Troy from its streaming library on Dec. 1. Wolfgang Peterson's 2004 war epic was also Brad Pitt's bid in the swords-and-sandals genre, which surged in popularity after Gladiator's breakout run at the box office. Released at the height of the trend, Troy was a modest success, earning $497 million against its $185 million budget. The film featured a powerhouse cast headlined by Pitt and Eric Bana; Orlando Bloom, Sean Bean, Brian Cox, Brendan Gleeson, Peter O'Toole, Rose Byrne, and Diane Kruger also joined the ensemble. A loose adaptation of Homer's The Illiad, Troy depicted Achilles and Hector's feud against the backdrop of the Trojan War.

Major television deaths are almost always sad, but they're especially devastating when viewers barely get to spend time with the character in question. While the death of a longtime favorite dramatically impacts the show and its audience, the demise of smaller players can hit just as hard.
This is especially true when they've made a good impression, igniting hopes that they'll take on a more prominent role in the story. In some cases, they're met with an early end instead, leaving viewers to wonder what their character arc could have looked like if they'd lasted longer than a handful of episodes.

The fantasy genre shines on television, as the episodic nature of TV shows allows for plenty of time to focus on world-building and magic systems while still providing character development. However, all the moving parts and expectations surrounding fantasy TV series make it difficult for a show to hit the mark in every aspect of the story. Common issues arise with fantasy TV shows that continue for too long, running out of ideas and growing repetitive before the finale. In a perfect show, there can't be any major problems or too many moments that make viewers quit the series.
Many of the best fantasy TV shows of the 2020s are almost perfect and could prove themselves to be the best of the 21st century before their stories end. More often than not, great fantasy shows are based on books, giving the seasons structure and providing a strong storyline for the script.

While it might come as a shock, sometimes, actors root for their own characters to be written off of a show. The reasons can be as simple as that they are bored or that they find the experience too demanding. Sometimes, they receive a better offer and have to give up their current post. However, not everyone who wants their character dead has their wish to come true.
Sophie Turner famously didn't want her Game of Thrones character to survive the show, but fans would later learn that Sansa becomes one of the few survivors who thrive in the game for power. Similarly, many actors have very specific ideas for their characters to be killed off. Sometimes, the show honors their idea. Other times, they get a different, shocking death.

Fantasy TV shows can change quickly, and when big plot twists and narrative changes are written into the story, they have a major impact. The magic systems and rules of the realities that these fantastical worlds exist in allow the writers and creators to experiment with story and character dynamics, leading to episodes that change everything for the series. Although major characters frequently die on the show, they are soon replaced by another essential character in the narrative. Even world-renowned characters like Ned and Robb Stark meet their ends long before the show itself.
With so many horrible fates, it was no great surprise when Grand Maester Pycelle's story came to a brutal conclusion. Qyburn swiftly replaced him, but his horrible death marked a turning point for the Game of Thrones. While relatively underrepresented, compared to characters like Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen,...

The list of iconic characters that HBO’s Game of Thrones gave to its fans is long-winding and nostalgic. From Tyrion to his father Tywin Lannister, to the Khaleesi and Jon Snow. From Oberyn Martell to Cersei Lannister, there were simply a host of faces that became globally recognizable after the incredible success of Game of Thrones.

Regardless, Tywin Lannister, portrayed by the veteran Charles Dance, was not only a fan-favorite despite his loyalties lying against the protagonists of the show. He was the leader of one of the strongest houses in the seven kingdoms, the mastermind that pulled all the strings for his family, and a flaring temper whose brunt was born by everyone in his family, most notably Tyrion Lannister.

Before rewatching Mirrors (get it Here), I was a little confused as to why it’s either forgotten or, honestly, kind of hated on. It was one of those movies that I saw in theaters when it came out and then have clear memories of when it came to my Blockbuster for rent. It’s got a fun cast of reliables and was directed by one of the early 2000s freshest and goriest directors. The director has gone on to have a steady and varied career and his new movie starring Halle Berry called Never Let Go sounds as intriguing as ever. After watching Mirrors again, I still really enjoyed it, but I now understand why it has the reputation it has and why it’s perfect for a black sheep. Let’s take a look but maybe be wary of any mirrors that don’t look exactly right.

Moore's Bond films were a cocktail of genres, veering from standard spy thrillers to supernatural and blaxploitation themes. The franchise broke tradition with slapstick humor and wild action sequences, making Moore's tenure unique and memorable. Roger Moore faced off against formidable opponents, like Jaws, and delivered mind-blowing stunts like the AMC Hornet jump over a bridge.
On June 10, 1972, Roger Moore was announced as the new James Bond. Having previously starred as Simon Templar in The Saint and Lord Brett Sinclair in The Persuaders, he knew what it took to play a daring, fashion-savvy, lothario. Born in Stockwell, London, he was also as British as Bond actors come. Surprisingly, everyone always seemed to doubt him. For the 13 years that he was employed by the Broccolis, various critics constantly labeled his version of Agent 007 a buffoon. Others suggested he wasnt as handsome or magnetic as Connery, opinions he disagreed with.

Five years after its hotly controversial finale, Game of Thrones remains one of the most popular television series of all time. Featuring an epic battle for the Iron Throne of Westeros, the HBO series based on George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire was known for introducing iconic characters that audiences grew to love throughout eight seasons.
The popularity of Game of Thrones being what it is, many actors and actresses from the beloved series have gone on to enjoy successful careers outside of the series. Many have joined major franchises in the years since, with many showing up in a galaxy far, far away for a surprise appearance in the Star Wars universe.

There are plenty of sympathetic, well-liked, and impressive characters in both House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones. Although Westeros is an undeniably terrible place, there are a few individuals who earn the viewers' admiration through their honesty and kindness. However, not all characters can become instant fan favorites.
On the contrary, there are plenty of characters in both shows who are widely disliked by the audience. This hateability factor might be intentionally woven into their character arcs; people like Ramsay Bolton and Joffrey Baratheon are eminently objectionable. At the same time, there are a few characters who just fail to hit the mark. Whether it's due to personal flaws, irredeemable actions, or feeble writing, there are some characters fans simply can't stand.

Doctor Who episodes span various genres, showcasing thrilling sci-fi, drama, and romance, resonating differently with each viewer and era. Notable classics like "The Caves of Androzani" and modern gems like "Blink" highlight the show's storytelling depth and evolution. Episodes like "The Day of the Doctor" and "Genesis of the Daleks" masterfully blend action, suspense, and lore to create timeless Doctor Who moments.
The best Doctor Who episodes of all time include stories from the Time Lord's six decades on TV. Doctor Who is also one of the few TV shows capably moving week-on-week between suspenseful horror, philosophical drama, and heartbreaking romance. Like Colin Baker, Doctor Who wears a coat of many colors, which makes it a challenge in determining the series' best stories.

An Irish Angel, directed by Danny Patrick, is set in Northern Ireland and centers around Aine, a teenager facing the challenges of an unexpected pregnancy. Still in school herself, Aine must grapple with this major life change while surrounded by the daily pressures of her family and community.
We meet Aine at the start of the film, nervous to reveal her situation to anyone beyond her grandmother. As her belly grows, so do the difficult decisions she needs to make. Will she keep the baby, or will she choose abortion in light of her young age? And how will those around her react to her news, particularly her strict Catholic upbringing and mother?
Aine leans on friends like Leo as well as mentors like her drama teacher, Ellie, for guidance and support. But each comes with their own personal hardships too. All the while, Aine’s terminally ill grandmother needs looking after as well.

Hated movie characters aren't always villains, with actions that make them detestable, sometimes more than the antagonists themselves. Actors give memorable performances as unlikable characters, generating discussions and hatred, even if not intended by the audience. Characters like Marla Grayson and Dolores Umbridge create discomfort, showcasing reprehensible actions with no acknowledgment of their evil.
While there have been plenty of likable villains and charismatic antiheroes that audiences have loved, the most hated movie characters are entertaining because of how satisfying it is to loathe them. Movie history is full of despicable human beings whose only purpose in life is to make life miserable for the heroes and regular people alike. Nothing will help the audience get behind a hero faster than by pitting them against the worst possible villains available. A quarter-century ago, audiences thought they said "goodbye" to Indiana Jones with the third movie. Yet, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the supposed trilogy finale, wasn't the end. Whether audiences wish it was or if they appreciate the succeeding films, there is no denying that Henry Jones Junior's (Harrison Ford) quest for the Holy Grail was the zenith for the iconic hero created by George Lucas and brought to life by Steven Spielberg. With the return of familiar faces and villains, along with the introduction of two new ones, the film marked the Indiana Jones movies' transformation into a full-fledged universe.
If the second film, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, was technically a prequel, the third film was a direct sequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Last Crusade was also supposed to be Indiana Jones' swan song, because successful film universes didn't really go beyond trilogies,...

Released 35 years back in 1989, Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade became a cult classic movie in the long-standing franchise. Exploring emotional themes of the complex father-son relationships, epic action sequences, and the iconic good vs. evil narrative where the protagonist fights against the Nazis, the movie became a fan-favorite watch worldwide.

While Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade have several important aspects attributing to the success of the film, one iconic moment from the movie that became a beloved piece of cinematic history was apparently improvised. The scene took place between Harrison Ford and Sean Connery, where the latter ad-libbed a line, which was so hilarious that Steven Spielberg chose to keep it in the final cut.

Movie franchises often struggle with satisfying conclusions when continuing for financial gain. Some long-running franchises like Indiana Jones and Harry Potter have wrapped up their stories beautifully before returning for more. John Wick may have reached a crossroads, and the history of other franchises suggests that moving forward with sequels and spinoffs is unwise.
Most movie franchises tend to fizzle out, but some long-running franchises have already had the perfect chance to go out on a high note. Franchises usually keep making movies for as long as they are profitable. While this makes sense financially, it means that, when viewed as a whole, these stories don't get the satisfying conclusions that they deserve. Later movies rarely live up to those that made the characters so popular to begin with.

Orlando Bloom didn't enjoy playing Paris in Troy, struggling to relate to the character. Despite a hefty budget, Troy was a box office hit with a strong worldwide gross of $497.4 million. Critics were divided on Troy, praising the spectacle but criticizing the emotionless depiction of the Trojan War.
Orlando Bloom hated being part of the movie Troy, as he had no way of relating to his character in the historical epic, and subsequently blanked filming the movie out of his mind. The 2004 Wolfgang Peterson-directed movie is loved by many, but for Bloom, playing the role of Paris is one that he doesnt look back on with much love or enthusiasm, as he didnt want to be in the movie.

You might remember English actor Julian Glover for his role as Walter Donovan, the villain of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." A Nazi collaborator who wants the Holy Grail to achieve immortality, he meets a grisly end when he chooses ... poorly.
In his native England, Glover was a renowned member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. In Hollywood, though? He's a 6'2 British man, so, of course, he plays the heels, even in his later roles like Pycelle on "Game of Thrones." (Who knows if he'll show up in "3 Body Problem" with his former co-stars.)
"Last Crusade" was not Glover's first rodeo with Lucasfilm; he had a much smaller role in "The Empire Strikes Back" as Imperial General Veers. The general only shows up in the film's first act, but he leads the At-at assault on the Hoth Rebel base (with some insert shots of him riding in the...

Exclusive: Stephan Elliott, who directed the celebrated cult classic The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, tells this column that a sequel “is happening” and that the original movie’s stars Terence Stamp, Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving are back “on board” 30 years after the film’s initial release.
“I’m not repeating myself, we’ll start the new film in Australia, but by God, we’re going on one helluva journey,” Elliott reveals.
“The original cast is on board, I’ve got a script that everybody likes, we’re still working out deals. … It’s happening,” he adds with brio.
Since it played a midnight screening in Un Certain Regard at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, Priscilla has become a byword for glittering, extravagant excess. That was a party night to remember; except I was there and all I can remember is getting back to my hotel at 6 a.

The "Star Wars" universe is stuffed with memorable baddies, and since the theatrical films have mostly been shot in London, these villains are typically from the United Kingdom. Everyone's got a favorite: Ian McDiarmid's sinister Emperor Palpatine, Peter Cushing's ruthless Grand Moff Tarkin (who was digitally resurrected for "Rogue One"), Kenneth Colley's stressed out Admiral Piett ... there's really no wrong answer here. But if I absolutely have to place one member of the Galactic Empire over all the others, I might just go with Julian Glover's delectably evil General Maximillian Veers.
Why? Even though he doesn't get much screen time in "Star Wars: Episode V -- The Empire Strikes Back", Glover is just such a strikingly nasty piece of work during the assault on the Rebels' Hoth base of operations that I find myself wishing Lucas had found more for him to do.

Fictional characters like Indiana Jones and Homer Simpson were surprisingly inspired by real people, such as adventurer Roy Chapman Andrews and Matt Groening's own father. James Bond's rival Auric Goldfinger was based on architect Ern Goldfinger, who received prank calls after the film was released. The character of Cosmo Kramer from Seinfeld was inspired by Larry David's neighbor Kenny Kramer, who shared many outrageous traits with the fictional character.
There are some fictional characters who, despite seeming impossibly larger than life, were shockingly based on real people. Across various movies and television shows certain characters have always stood out as being complete fabrications that have interesting real-life inspirations behind them and actual people who contributed to their development. The stories behind the real-life inspirations for fictional characters can come from the creator's family members, people they knew about in their day-to-day lives, or historical figures whose extraordinary life stories were stranger than fiction.

You can almost smell the tea and toast of a Saturday afternoon kick-back with the television as you watch Bouli Lanners island tale of tentative romance. Gentle enough for even the most fragile of constitutions, the writer/director/star puts the wild and windswept backdrop of the Isle of Lewis to good use in his first English language feature, without it feeling like an advert for the tourist board.
Lanners plays Phil, sort for Philippe, an incomer who spends his days working for the farm run by gruff Angus (Julian Glover), alongside the older man's son Peter (Cal MacAninch) grandson Brian (Andrew Still). Also living at the farm is lonely middle-aged singleton Millie (Michelle Fairley), who has picked up the local nickname "ice cream" on account.
When Phil has a stroke that makes him lose his memory, Millie makes a decision that surprises even her. The film hinges on the late-romance warmth that is.

Bouli Lanners’ picturesque setting makes room for a lonely woman to take advantage of memory loss and kid the victim they had been lovers
‘Have you guys seen Jason Bourne?” asks Brian (Andrew Still), a farm labourer in the Outer Hebrides, near the start of Nobody Has to Know. “It’s exactly the same kind of set-up!” How droll of the writer-director Bouli Lanners to invoke that breakneck action franchise when his own film could scarcely be more different, save for a plot involving memory loss. The closest thing here to an action set-piece occurs when an estate agent is tardy returning to the office, leaving her colleague to take a later-than-usual lunch break.
If this isn’t a film to set the heart racing, it doesn’t leave that organ entirely untroubled; with his script’s echoes of 40s weepie Random Harvest, Lanners is aiming for similar status. The...
