Well before Kevin Costner was known as John Dutton in Taylor Sheridan’s hit Yellowstone series, he starred in and directed the 1990 Western Dances with Wolves. The film, which went on to win Best Picture at the 1991 Academy Awards, will stream for free on Tubi starting Jan. 1, 2025.
In addition to its Best Picture Oscar, Dances with Wolves, the first film Costner ever directed, earned him the Best Director Award. The movie is based on the 1988 novel of the same title by Michael Blake, who also penned the screenplay for the film. Dances with Wolves stars Costner as Lieutenant John Dunbar, a member of the Union Army, who in the middle of the Civil War is injured, but manages to survive after a stand against the Confederates. Dunbar, after requesting a transfer, leads his own fort and befriends the Lakota tribe that is nearby.

The Western genre has been a beacon of great stories, powerful writing, and legendary talent since the earliest days of Hollywood, thanks to the work of John Ford, Sergio Leone, and John Wayne. While most Westerns follow the idea of lone gunslingers, small-town violence, and epic journeys, the genre also has a strong overlap with the war genre, thanks to conflicts like the Civil War.
Western movies cover a broad period of American history, with Westward expansion being the norm between the nation's founding and the turn of the century. Key conflicts, such as the American-Indian Wars and the Civil War, implicated the West, with the latter conflict stretching as far as Texas, New Mexico, and Idaho. America's push to the frontier was rife with conflict, making the Old West one of the most dangerous places in the nation's history.

Since the earliest days of cinema, the Western genre has stood at the forefront of storytelling, attracting some of the film industry's best writers, directors and stars. Combining action, adventure, drama, and more, these films explore life on the American frontier through the eyes of a variety of characters, from homesteaders to bounty hunters. While not the powerhouse of a genre that it once was, it continues to turn out some of the best-written and best-acted films there are.
For many, the Western genre -- especially Spaghetti Westerns -- is best associated with legendary Italian director Sergio Leone. Best known for his "Dollars Trilogy" and his collaborations with composer Ennio Morricone, the director redefined the Old West, turning Clint Eastwood into a star in the process. While his impact on the genre is undeniable, plenty of excellent Westerns were made by other great directors.

Quick Links What Is Dances with Wolves? How Accurate Is Dances with Wolves? Dances with Wolves Didn't Fully Honor the Indigenous People Dances with Wolves Defined an Era
It has been nearly 35 years since Dance with Wolves was first released in 1990. While it was not Kevin Costner's first Western, as that honor went to 1985's Silverado, it was the first movie that he ever directed, and it quickly became a critical and commercial success. It was a perfect movie for Costner's career.
As perfect as it might have been, however, there were some historical elements that it completely failed to acknowledge or respect. Some elements are perfectly depicted, but many fail to acknowledge the reality of life on the American Frontier and it even fails to honor the book that it was adapting.

One of Costner's standout career moments was the buffalo hunt scene in Dances with Wolves, shot over six days with 3,500 buffalo. Costner's new venture, Horizon, a four-part epic film series, reflects his willingness to push boundaries and invest his own money in projects. The buffalo hunt scene was just one moment that helped elevate Dances with Wolves' performance and audience reception, leaving Costner with unforgettable experiences.
Kevin Costner has recalled one of the most memorable moments of his career in a retrospect of his movie back catalog. Although the actor has appeared in dozens of movies, there is one particularly challenging scene that Costner remembers as a stand-out of anything he has done the buffalo hunt from Dances with Wolves.

The best Westerns of the 1990s marked a revival of the genre, introducing new narratives and challenging traditional themes. Films like "Dances with Wolves" and "Unforgiven" explored cultural clashes and deconstructed the myth of the heroic cowboy. These '90s Westerns had a lasting impact on the genre, influencing contemporary storytelling and showcasing complex characters and narratives.
The best Westerns of the 1990s mark a crucial point in the genre's cinematic history. Westerns were most prevalent in the early and mid-1900s. While the genre saw a general decline since that era, Western films resurged in the '90s. From the epic scale of traditional Westerns to the gritty realism and moral ambiguity of neo, revisionist, and anti-Western films, these movies laid the foundations for the genre's continued evolution in contemporary cinema.

For nearly a century, the Western genre has been captivating movie-goers with gun-slinging cowboys who traverse the Wild West. As time progressed and societal norms shifted, so too did the western films of each era. They began to act as windows into contemporary culture rather than reflections of past eras. Western movies have become beloved staples in cinema and continue to thrill viewers today with their daring adventures set against grandiose landscapes.

A new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series has been released this morning, and in this episode we’re looking back at one of the least popular films to be directed by the legendary John Carpenter: the 2001 release Ghosts of Mars (watch it Here). Why didn’t Ghosts of Mars turn out to be another Carpenter classic? We try to figure that out in the video embedded above.
Directed by Carpenter from a script he wrote with Larry Sulkis, Ghosts of Mars has the following synopsis: Long inhabited by human settlers, the Red Planet has become the manifest destiny of an over-populated Earth. Nearly 640,000 people now live and work all over Mars, mining the planet for its abundant natural resources. But one of those mining operations has uncovered a deadly mother lode: a long-dormant Martian civilization whose warriors are systematically taking over the bodies of human intruders.

“I want to be in the Army.” That statement prompted a frantic phone call from my ex-wife, and an entire series of conversations. It also inspired a very particular screening of a very particular film, one in a series of recent screenings that have spoken to Toshi’s developing interests in both history and Hollywood. While movies are very important to Toshi, they are less important than Allen, and I suspect there will come a time where I lose Allen to other interests. That’s fine with me. Whatever he’s interested in and excited by, I’ll encourage him. Right now, his interests are more in games and puzzles and building things. Minecraft is pretty much the perfect intersection of all of Allen’s energies. As a result, when I am picking things that we’re all going to watch together, I find myself going mainstream and populist and easy.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (20th Century Fox) Sequel to the seminal 1980s film catches up with a weathered, but still determined Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas, who seems to savor every syllable of Allan Loeb and Stephen Schiff’s screenplay) just out of jail and back on the comeback trail. In attempting to repair his relationship with his estranged daughter (Carey Mulligan), Gekko forges a reluctant alliance with her fiancé (Shia Labeouf), himself an ambitious young turk who finds himself seduced by Gekko’s silver tongue and promise of riches. Lifeless film is further evidence of director Oliver Stone’s decline. Once America’s most exciting filmmaker, Stone hasn’t delivered a film with any teeth since 1995’s Nixon. Labeouf and Mulligan generate no sparks on-screen, and the story feels forced from the protracted opening to the final, Disney-esque denouement. Only a brief cameo by Charlie Sheen,...
