The late Quincy Jones made memorable contributions to General Hospital in the early 1980s, providing songs that were used for not one but two of the show’s most popular pairings – Holly (Emma Samms) and Luke (Anthony Geary), and later, Robert (Tristan Rogers) and Holly. Jones produced the song “Baby Come to Me,” which only hit No. 73 on the Billboard charts when it was first released in April 1982. Later, Gh used it to introduce “widowed” Luke Spencer finding love again with the enigmatic Holly Sutton. The song, performed by singers James Ingram and Patti Austin, swept viewers into Luke’s romance with the English beauty. While viewers heard the tune multiple times a week while watching Holly and Luke, the actors didn’t necessarily hear it as songs are added to scenes after they’ve been shot. “Music isn’t always played at the time of taping a scene,” Samms tells TV Insider.

Francis Ford Coppola has directed some of the best movies in cinematic history, and while that's brought him financial success at times, his lowest-grossing movies standings have changed with Megalopolis. The Godfather helped establish Coppola as one of Hollywood's biggest talents behind the camera, and the mob crime movie proved he also had plenty of pull with audiences at the cinema. The Godfather's $243 million box office haul suggested that he'd have plenty of other major financial hits, but with his proclivity for risky projects, big budgets, and clashing with studios, that rarely happened after 1974.
Coppola still managed to deliver a hit in Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1992, as it is the only other of his movies to make over $200 million worldwide. None of the other Francis Ford Coppola movies made over $100 million (via The Numbers). The reality is that the director has had more big swings and misses at the box office,...

In 1989, Quincy Jones had already amassed one of the most enviable discographies in pop history, playing, writing, arranging, or producing for Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Lesley Gore, The Brothers Johnson, George Benson, Patti Austin, and Michael Jackson.
But the legendary polymath still had more to do — Jones set out to create an album that “represents everything I have worked for after 40 years,” according to The Billboard Book of Number One R&b Hits. That turned into Back on the Block, which spawned one of the last hits in Jones’ hit-filled...

Early on in “Ella Fitzgerald: Just One of Those Things,” singer Patti Austin tells the story of how Fitzgerald — traveling with a big band in the 1930s and apparently the only one on the bus with no interest in getting high — would sit in the back with her coat over her head to act as her “own personal filtration system.” That’s good for a laugh, and it’s also good for a sense of relief, in being reminded that this will be the rare film about a 20th century jazz giant that doesn’t have to worry about when to start in on the tragic foreshadowing. Living to a ripe old age, in this genre of documentary, is not just one of those things.
It’s suggested in director Leslie Woodhead’s film that Fitzgerald lived a fairly lonely life when she was off the road — but it’s...

Many contemporary albums arrive with less than a week’s notice, but Jhene Aiko started to roll-out her new full-length, Chilombo, months ago. She released four different tracks to stoke anticipation, only to find that when the album finally came out March 6, a brand new song immediately supplanted the lead singles as a fan-favorite. “B.S.”, a casually vengeful back-and-forth with another R&b singer, H.E.R., quickly became Aiko’s highest-charting track.
Collaborations like this one seem to account for more and more of R&b’s big hits recently.

An upcoming Quincy Jones orchestral show in London, originally billed as a performance of three Michael Jackson albums, has been changed to “a celebration of ’80s music.”
The June 23rd concert at the O2 Arena was initially announced in February as “Quincy Jones Presents Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad,” with a live symphony orchestra and several unnamed guest stars, Variety reports.
The title change comes after the release of and subsequent controversy surrounding the HBO documentary Leaving Neverland, in which two men detailed the alleged childhood sexual abuse they were subjected to by Jackson.

In the wake of the smash success and pop culture phenomenon of AMC's "Mad Men," other networks have been scrambling to develop their own period based dramas. ABC and NBC each tried with "Pan Am" and "The Playboy Club" respectively and failed, with both shows already canceled. But Starz has faith in their late '50s soaked "Magic City," chronicling the glitzy highlife (and lowlife) of Miami of the era. And with show already renewed for a second season, they are looking to stick around for a while.
With show now a couple of episodes in, Starz is not waiting to get the alternate revenue streams rolling as the soundtrack for the series is already on the way. And it's pretty solid. Boasting eleven tunes, it's steeped in the era with blues cuts from Bo Diddley and Johnny Otis, jazz from Lee Morgan, soul from Ray Charles and pop radio...

So if you watched the Grammys last night and caught the Best New Artist category, you were most likely wondering: who is Esperanza Spalding? The 26-year-old beauty shocked millions as she beat out multiplatinum-selling artists like Justin Bieber and Drake, as well as critical and rock radio darlings Florence & the Machine and Mumford & Sons.
Born in Portland, Oregon, Spalding is primarily a singer, jazz bassist, and violinist. She chalks up her early interest in instruments to watching Yo Yo Ma perform on an episode of "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood" when she was 4.
She attended Berklee College of Music, where she would later become one of their youngest professors in history at age 20. By this point, she'd already toured with Patti Austin and recorded with M. Ward.
But it was her 2008 release "Esperanza," which features her singing in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, that kicked off what's sure to be an illustrious career.

There were a handful of things we could have celebrated this morning. After all, today is the birthday of Charlie and Craig Reid (better known as the Proclaimers, who scored one of the biggest one hit wonders of all time with "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)"). Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante will also be blowing out candles today, as he turns 40 years old (hopefully he celebrates with a little "Californication"). But just as we did last week, today we celebrate Michael Jackson's ascent to superstardom.
On this day in 1983, "Billie Jean" found itself at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time. The second single from Thriller bounded over Patti Austin and James Ingram's "Baby, Come to Me" to take the top spot, where it stayed for seven weeks before being ousted by (of all things) "Come on Eileen" by Dexys Midnight Runners. One week later,...

Never in a million years would you imagine pop princess Miley Cyrus singing alongside the soulful Natalie Cole, or even American Idol (TV) judge Randy Jackson belting it out next to Couple's Retreat (2009) Vince Vaughn. But it did. It all went down Monday night, at famed producer Quincy Jones' studio in La, to benefit the earthquake in Haiti. Everyone from the Jonas Brothers to Faith Evans showed up to lend their vocals to "We Are the World" remix. 25 years ago, Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie and the late Michael Jackson rallied an insane number of famous singers, actors, and performers to lay the tracks for 'We Are the World" written by Richie and Jackson and produced by Jones. The year was 1985 -- big hair was a must have, neon colors drove the fashion industry, and in one La music studio history was made. To help stop famine in Africa,...

Los Angeles — When it came time to record the 25th-anniversary remake of "We Are the World," the legendary African-famine relief benefit's co-writer and producer, Lionel Richie, said he wanted to approach the project from a modern perspective. That might explain why none of the singers from the 1985 single were in the house for Monday night's marathon sessions, which took place in the same studios where the original song was laid down.
Instead of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper and the late Michael Jackson (whose previously recorded voice, however, will be heard on the tune), the 2010 version will be headlined by Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, Wyclef Jean, Josh Groban and Will.I.Am. It features a newly penned hip-hop break written by the Black Eyed Peas...

How do you portray democracy through the arts? That question was the inspiration for Visions of America and the collaboration between famed Grammy Award-winning pianist/conductor Peter Nero, renowned Americana photographer Joseph Sohm, and Grammy Award-winning pianist/composer Roger Kellaway. Austin To Show Off Her New Look at Governor's Ball
Slimmed-down jazz legend Patti Austin will be showing off her new look at the post-Oscars Governor's Ball. The singer, who recently shed half her 300 pound bulk - thanks to stomach stapling surgery, will celebrate her new trim image by performing for Hollywood's elite on March 5. Austin admits she had to do something drastic about her weight after being told it would kill her. The final straw came when medics refused to operate on a torn tendon in her knee in 2004 because she was "morbidly obese." She says, "I was devastated. Then I saw a doctor at Cedar-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, who said I'd need a wheelchair if I didn't have my stomach stapled." Austin underwent the $30,000 surgery in September, 2004 and now feels better than ever: "I even sing better because I can access my diaphragm and sustain notes with a fuller tone."...
