Heavy-hitter Marike Muselaers, VP international financing & co-production for the Scandi group Nordisk Film Production, has unveiled a solid slate of premium series, as its co-production “The Institute” is being pitched at Series Mania CoPro Pitching on Tuesday.
From Denmark, the four-parter “Snake Killer” is the first Prime Video Danish Original series, co-produced by Amazon MGM Studios, which holds first window rights in the Nordics. Anders Ølholm, credited for the hit thriller “Enforcement” (“Shorta”), is making his serialised debut as creator-helmer. In this crime show, toplining Pilou Asbæk, the story turns on Copenhagen’s mobile drug squad (Uropatruljen). A rogue cop, notorious for breaking the law to uphold it, rages war against a mysterious crime family after one of his informants is brutally killed.
The series illustrates Nordisk Film Production’s ambitions and unique leveraging power in a competitive market where financing decisions are back in the hands of producers, away from cash-shy broadcasters or streamers.

“Game of Thrones” star Pilou Asbæk and Iben Hjejle (“High Fidelity”) are leading the Nordic cast of “Secrets,” a contemporary Danish drama series directed by Kaspar Munk (“Ride Upon the Storm”) and represented globally by Viaplay Content Distribution.
Asbæk and Hjejle star as Mads and Eva, siblings who struggle to set boundaries and free themselves from old patterns as they live next to each other with their respective families in Copenhagen. Mads is a music teacher who escapes into a world of partying and drugs to avoid his predictable everyday life and family responsibilities. Eva, meanwhile, is trying to save both her marriage and her company, an architectural firm facing a serious crisis after a tragic death.
The eight-part series, which Munk co-wrote with Lone Hørslev, explores family relationships, abuse and co-dependency. Two of Scandinavia’s best-established producers, Anders Toft Andersen (“Follow the Money”) and Rasmus Kastberg (“Bamse”) are producing at Monday Scripted.

Exclusive: High Fidelity is on the move. Disney+ 10-episode series starring Zoë Kravitz, which had been set up at Disney’s upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service, will relocate to fellow streaming platform Hulu.
The decision comes a couple of weeks after the close of Disney’s $71.3 billion acquisition of Fox assets, which gave Disney controlling 60% stake in Hulu.
Disney+ is being billed as a service featuring programming that appeals to all ages while still conforming with the Disney brand. It runs the gamut of different demographics but it is considered a place for family-friendly fare vs. the more adult-oriented Hulu.
High Fidelity, from writers Veronica West and Sarah Kucserka, Midnight Radio and ABC Signature, is a reimagining of Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel and the 2000 feature starring John Cusack with a female point of view. While the movie was rated R, reflecting the tone in the book, I hear the series was...

"Hi Rob. You f**king asshole."
Rob Gordon is a great example of a character not having to be likeable to be interesting and entertaining (He made it to number 16 on our totally definitive list of the Top 50 assholes in cinema).
Yet you can’t help but root for Rob, because he’s played by John Cusack, and John Cusack can make hitmen sympathetic. Plus, as evidenced by the first article I linked to, I am in no position to criticize anyone for making endless lists. As you are reading a website called Den of Geek, there’s a chance you can also relate to Rob’s obsessive behaviour.

After lengthy negotiations, Zoë Kravitz ("Big Little Lies") has been tapped to star and executive produce "High Fidelity," the reimagining of Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel and the 2000 feature starring John Cusack with a female point of view, which had been in development at Disney’s upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service.
With Kravitz on board, the project has received a formal 10-episode order. The "High Fidelity" reboot hails from writers Veronica West & Sarah Kucserka, the Midnight Radio producing team and ABC Signature Studios (Smilf), and the cable/streaming division of ABC Studios. Midnight Radio is comprised of Scott Rosenberg — who co-wrote the High Fidelity feature — Jeff Pinkner, Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec.
Kravitz will play the ultimate music fan, a record store owner who’s obsessed with pop culture and Top Five lists, a female take on the character played in the movie by Cusack.

The end of the world is pretty terrifying, no matter how it happens. In the upcoming Netflix series “The Rain,” the main culprit is a deadly downpour that wipes out most of Scandinavia’s population.
People outrunning killer weather isn’t entirely new in apocalypse stories (just ask Jake Gyllenhaal), but it looks like this show is more concerned with what happens years later, after two children who survived the initial attack venture back out into the world to find companions. Emerging from a bunker they’ve been locked in for half a decade, they eventually found people who had their own way of lasting through the killer precipitation.
After finding a small pack of other survivors, it’s clear that even though the streets and schools and supermarkets are deserted, the danger didn’t end when the deadly virus got swept away. There are guns and gangs and killer...

Exclusive: I hear a romantic comedy TV series inspired by Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel High Fidelity and the 2000 feature starring John Cusack is in early development for Disney’s upcoming direct-to-consumer service. The project, a gender-swapped take on the classic title, comes from writers Veronica West and Sarah Kucserka (Bull, Ugly Betty), the Midnight Radio producing team and ABC Signature Studios (Smilf), the cable/streaming division of ABC Studios. Midnight Radio is comprises Scott Rosenberg — who co-wrote the High Fidelity feature — Jeff Pinkner, Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec.
Written by West and Kucserka, the High Fidelity TV series is described as a departure from the book and the movie while still capturing the romantic comedy and authentic spirit of the original source materials. I hear it centers on a record store owner — a female take on the character played in the movie by Cusack — talking straight to the camera as she chronicles past relationships.

Did you know Tim Robbins has never been nominated for an Emmy? The Oscar winner hasn’t been as much of a fixture on television screens as he has been on the big screen, but now he could be recognized by the television academy with a Best Drama Actor bid for “Here and Now.” Created by Alan Ball (“True Blood,” “Six Feet Under,” “American Beauty”), this freshman HBO series centers on a multi-racial family whose bond is fractured when one of their children starts seeing things the rest cannot. Robbins plays Greg Boatwright, a philosophy professor and the family patriarch. In honor of his latest small-screen achievement, let’s take a look back at some of his best big-screen outings. Netflix has released a trailer for a new film called The Rain, which is a post-apocalyptic thriller about a group of young survivors who band together to try and continue to survive a virus that is carried by the rain. Basically, they have to do everything they can to stay dry. I know the premise sounds kind of silly with a tagline like, "Stay dry, stay alive", but it actually looks really good! It looks like the story will go into some very dark territory. The trailer has definitely sparked my interest. Watch the trailer for yourself and let us know if it sparks yours!

We all have predisposed notions about the infamous “romantic comedy.” As with other genres, there’s a large subsection of offerings, giving it a bad name. But, for every tired, cliché-driven comedy, there is another impressive offering that redefines the genre, garners plenty of laughs, and tells an honest story about love and relationships, however warped they may be. In the coming weeks, we’ll take a look at the fifty romantic comedy films that should be seen. These may not all be classic films, but they certainly put a stamp on the industry and the genre we affectionately call “rom-coms.”
#50. Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

Those familiar with the off-kilter comedic duo behind the Danish TV series Klown (or Klovn as it is known in Denmark) — which spurned one of the most hilarious and inappropriate feature films of recent years — will know exactly what type of humor to expect from their sequel Klovn Forever. Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen star essentially as parodies of themselves in this Curb Your Enthusiasm-style comedy, combining mundane issues from their personal lives with some extremely outlandish situations. They push the boundaries of what is considered appropriate with their off kilter brand of humor, falling into categories that are intentionally offensive — such as misogyny and even racism. But therein lies the appeal: in these playful antics, here considered nonchalant, do we as an audience find humor in how outrageous and disrespectful they can be.

Imagine taking Curb Your Enthusiasm and mixing it with the gross out comedy of a movie like The Hangover. To some people this may sound like the worst thing ever, especially the thought of taking Larry David’s work and mixing it with a movie like that, how could they? The answer to this question is a movie called Klown, which in turn is based on a television show from Denmark. While not many people in the UK will have seen the television show, the film is an eye opener to something they just might like.

Title: Klown Director: Mikkel Norgaard Starring: Frank Hvam, Casper Christensen, Marcuz Jess Petersen, Mia Lyhne, Iben Hjejle Kind of loosely of a piece with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon’s “The Trip,” by way of ”The Hangover” or “Bad Santa,” Scandanavian import ”Klown” is another comedy that wrings most of its laughs from the premise that in the absence of a civilizing female presence males are apt to revert to despicable and idiotic behavior. Synopsis:
In what critics are hailing as “the funniest movie of the year!” (IFC), Klown follows two wildly inappropriate friends — played by celebrated international comedians Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen — as they run amok through the Danish countryside, plowing through endless awkward confrontations and unspeakable debaucheries. Hopelessly wrongheaded Frank “kidnaps” the 12-year-old nephew of his pregnant girlfriend in an eager attempt to prove his fatherhood potential, and they join sex-crazed Casper on his secret adulterous weekend canoe trip. Long considered one of the funniest shows in Scandinavia, the television series Klown features Danish comedians Casper Christensen and Frank Hvam playing Curb Your Enthusiasm-style variations on themselves, getting into hysterically awkward encounters with friends and strangers, loved ones and frenemies, including other Danish celebrities such as actress Iben Hjejle (High Fidelity, The Boss of It All) and Jørgen Leth (the co-director, with Lars von Trier, of The Five Obstructions). Running for six seasons, it propelled the comic duo to the heights of Danish celebrity and mainstream popularity. Now there is a film version of Klown directed by Mikkel Nørgaard, who conceived and directed much of the series with Christensen and Hvam, an uproarious and vulgar and sneakily sentimental comedy, playing like an odd riff on the significantly inferior The Hangover series. Whether it is a canoe trip from hell or the single most unforgettable masturbation joke/set piece you’ll likely ever see,...

With “Klovn’s” television run finishing in 2009 after six seasons, celebrated Danish comedians Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen decided on a big screen transition to continue their socially awkward antics. Taking a page—whether coincidentally or not seems up for debate to some—from Larry David‘s “Curb Your Enthusiasm”, their characters exist in a heightened state of normalcy. Uncomfortably dealing with life lessons alongside family and friends, these two buffoons obviously have a few screws loose when it comes to thinking before they act. Selfish, utterly aloof, and prone to ruining their lives with relative ease, the men of Klovn: The Movie [Klown] should appeal to many HBO subscribers as a result. Therefore, the fact this proud “Curb” hater found it off-putting, boring for stretches, and oftentimes misguided shouldn’t detract viewers from watching. Conversely, the surprising fact I started enjoying myself about halfway through might actually be a recommendation.

A Buffoon Buffet: Danish Comedy Brazen, Ballsy, Adult Fun
Witness the most surprising, and hands down, funniest film to be released in American theaters this year with Klown, the feature debut of Mikkel Nørgaard, based on his 2005-2009 Danish television series of the same name. Released in his native country in 2010, the film has managed to gain some notoriety playing at a small number of festivals stateside, the content so brazen, so daring, so adult (not pornographic, per se, but in its ability to be realistic in its comedic scenarios and not cop out to please the fantasies of the moral majority), that it reveals its closest American counterpoint, The Hangover to be the bullshitty scam it really is. And surprisingly, it’s got a crack at being dumped into American cinemas, though it may already be destined for cult superstardom since it is utterly offensive to mainstream sensibilities. Oh,...

Klown is going to be remembered in December as the funniest film of the year, beating anything the U.S. has to offer in the way of comedy. It's a benchmark in joke-telling that goes above and beyond the genre of so-called "gross-out" humor. Its biggest jokes don't easily die after the laughs have quieted. Instead, they slowly roll and build into the next disaster awaiting Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen as they set out on a sex-fueled canoe trip that is sidelined by the sudden inclusion of a young boy. Sure, Todd Phillips is planning to remake it with Danny McBride, but it will be impossible for them to recapture the kind of off magic put on display here. Only the Danish could ever be so bold. Some of the sites seen here won't soon be unseen any time in the near future. Drafthouse Films, who are distributing the...

Danny McBride is joining forces with producer Todd Phillips for a remake of the Danish comedy Clown for Warner Bros.
The Eastbound & Down actor will write, produce, and star in this comedy, which centers on two men who go on vacation with a 13-year-old boy. The original movie was spawned from the TV series, which follows Casper and Frank, who plan a party-heavy vacation. Their plans are thrown asunder when Frank must take his girlfriend's 11-year-old son with them on the trip, to prove he's a good father, even though they continue to party with the young boy in tow.
Todd Phillips is only attached as a producer at this point, and is not set to direct. Casper Christensen and Frank Hvam, who created and starred in the original series Klovn, are on board as producers of the remake.
No production schedule was given, although it is said that Danny McBride...

“What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?”

Chicago – Some films never get a fair shot with audiences. They open in a handful of art house theaters scattered throughout the country before inconspicuously landing on DVD. Passionate movie lovers are left with the task of championing these unjustly obscure titles and helping them to acquire the audience they deserve. Before I reveal my picks for the top five films of 2010 that you probably didn’t see, here are the 10 runners-up.

The feisty, ever-questioning spirit of Carl Sagan is alive and well in Alejandro Amenabar’s fascinating and haunting historical epic. “Agora” functions as somewhat of an antithesis to “Passion of the Christ,” portraying the ancient ideological battles between Pagans and Christians with complexity, intelligence and a refusal to exploit its inherent violence. Rachel Weisz is at the peak of her radiance as Hypatia, a female scholar specializing in astronomy, philosophy and common sense.

It’s a consolation for us to believe that our departed loved ones view us as their “unfinished business.”
Like “The Sixth Sense,” “The Eclipse” is primarily a human drama with occasional jolts of chilling horror. It centers on a character we’ve all seen before, the haunted widower grieving over his wife’s death, yet the filmmakers refuse to turn him into a cliché. He’s played by Ciarán Hinds, one of the finest and most underrated character actors in recent cinema, who’s popped up in everything from “There Will Be Blood” to “In Bruges,” and will soon be known to American audiences...
