“It was a flashback, for sure,” says Sharif Atkins of stepping back on the set of a medical drama set for his guest spot on Chicago Med. He played Dr. Michael Gallant on ER across five seasons of its 15-year run (1994-2009) on the same network. Now, he appears in the October 1 episode of Med, as Joe Thomas, alongside Crystal Lee Brown as his wife Gina. Their son, Max (Kevin Chacon), is a patient at Gaffney. “It’s being on the other side of the clipboard, right? I’m now the person being taken care of or looked after or what have you,” Atkins tells TV Insider. “It just reminds me of [being on ER]. I remember the first scene that I did, Laura Innes was directing the episode, and I was taking some vitals for an elderly patient. And so it’s really cool to have been back in Chicago and to...

Robert Romano's death in ER was shocking, but the character's complexity was not fully explored, leaving a sense of missed potential. Romano's antagonistic demeanor made him a memorable character, but his rare moments of showing humanity hinted at a more sincere side. Romano's death, crushed by a helicopter, seemed overly hokey and lacked believability, especially considering his previous storyline involving a helicopter accident.
The death of Robert Romano (Paul McCrane) in ER was a shocking event, but the writing did not completely do the character justice. Centering around the doctors and nurses of Cook County General Hospital in Chicago, ER is one of the most definitive medical dramas on TV, and Robert Romano made a big splash when he was introduced. Starting off as a recurring character in seasons 4 and 5, Robert became a series regular in ER season 6. From his earliest episodes, Robert butted heads with the other staff members at County General.

In 1994, NBC launched a fast-paced medical drama called ER that would capture the hearts and minds of viewers for 15 years. From the twisted romantic relationships to the constant pressures of practicing emergency room medicine, ER touched on subjects as heartwarming as they were taboo.
Between the hospital board politics and the strain of a teaching hospital atmosphere, to the ungodly hours on duty and the moments of triumph and peace that made the stresses of the job worth it, ER had its highs and lows, just like every other long-running television series. Sprawling across fifteen seasons, it's a given that some seasons are much better than others. So, how does each season rank, and what made it memorable enough to earn its place in medical drama history? Let's rank the seasons, from worst to best.

I’ve been having a fascinating conversation this evening with @Richard_Amm about representation of disabled people in media. He contacted me because he’s developing a test for such representation akin to my Where Are the Women? test. During our chat it occurred to me that it might be useful and interesting to think about what positive representation of disability exists in movies.
What are some films with good representation of people with disabilities?
Honestly, it’s tough to think of many films that do a good job of this! Richard suggested Tod Browning’s controversial 1932 film Freaks (pictured), and I agree that that one is, at least, better than many others.
One TV character that comes to mind is Kerry Weaver on ER, who walked with a limp and used a crutch for support: her disability was far from the totality of what defined the character, and for...

Spoiler Alert: The report includes details about the Season 3 finale of How to Get Away with Murder.
Tonight’s series finale of ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder was filled with twists and turns, but fans finally got answers to some pressing questions — most important, whether Annalise will be absolved of her crimes.
Here’s what went down.
The season finale, titled “Stay,” opens with a shooting at the courthouse, and chaos breaks out. We get more context on that later.
The show rewinds to three days earlier, where Annalise (Viola Davis) is panicking after learning of the death of Hannah. Frank (Charlie Weber) is thought to be the perpetrator as he just learned some very shocking news about his parents — he was born out of an incestuous relationship between Hannah and her late brother/Annalise’s ex-husband Sam. It’s later implied that Governor Birkhead (Laura Innes) was behind her killing.

If the Emmys love you enough to give you Best Drama Series, you’d think they’d love you enough to shower you with acting awards, especially with an ensemble cast as deep as “Game of Thrones.” Alas, only one actor has ever won for the show: Peter Dinklage. This year is the last chance for his co-stars to join him in the winner’s circle. But even if no one does, “Thrones” will be in good company. “ER” and “Mad Men” couldn’t get more than one regular cast member to the podium either.

In our current political climate, as I watch the sides battle it out in their beliefs of who is right and who is wrong, I can only wonder whether either would have the temerity to survive if circumstances reached a boiling point.
While it may not be quite boiling yet, the events of Colony Season 2 Episode 8 are only going add fuel to the fire.
Survival continues to depend upon gray areas. If you're staunchly black or white, i.e., unwilling to temporarily work with the other side to gain information and ensure you live to fight another day, your days will be numbered. There's no question about it.
What many of us have already determined, and what it appears those we appreciate the most on Colony are also realizing, is that these groups cannot continue to function as silo organizations and hope to outwit the Raps.

As protesters cheered and car horns honked incessantly in protest of president-elect Donald Trump, actress Laura Innes, known for “E.R.,” joined roughly 45 other people on a Los Angeles street corner on Wednesday night. The gathering served as a proxy to a larger protest in downtown L.A. — the biggest city in the blue state of California — as citizens protested President-elect Donald Trump. “I’ve known Hillary Clinton forever because I worked on her senate campaign,” she told TheWrap. “To hear how she was so misrepresented brought me out to work more for the campaign. When Maura Tierney was a regular on John Wells’ “E.R.,” she spent 22 episodes a year wrapping her tongue around medical jargon at top speed. As jilted Brahmin wife Helen Solloway on Sarah Treem’s Showtime series “The Affair,” she measures her words as they dig deeply into what happens inside intimate relationships.
Tierney portrays the wife of wayward novelist Noah; according to Tierney, he sees her as “the perfect martyr wife,” she said during our video interview. From the perspective of Alison, Noah’s lover, Helen is “raucously aloof and confident and classist.” (Tierney convincingly acts to the manner born; she grew up in middle-class Boston.)
Season Two brought the perspectives of Helen and her counterpart, Alison’s husband Cole (Joshua Jackson),to the forefront. “In her understanding of herself,” said Tierney, “she’s very not perfect. She has to work super hard to be this kind of Brooklyn mom.

Season Two brought the perspectives of Helen and her counterpart, Alison’s husband Cole (Joshua Jackson),to the forefront. “In her understanding of herself,” said Tierney, “she’s very not perfect. She has to work super hard to be this kind of Brooklyn mom. She can’t do it. Actually, she falls apart.” One of the funniest episodes shows Helen taking too much marijuana and pills to drive safely; she finally realizes what a mess she has become.
It was more complicated for the writers to slot everyone into the timeline, said Tierney, but it yielded more for the actors to play with. “It’s Sarah’s show,” said Tierney. “Even if other writers write the episode, everything passes through her computer. By and large, she’s the creator of the characters. At the end of Season 1, Sarah said, ‘I think we’re going to open up the show next year.’ ”
This allowed the creative narrative device to remain interesting and not devolve into a trick, said Tierney: “It opened up the storytelling for them, for Cole and Helen to have more Pov. It was more about her character having more responsibility for what went down… Sarah’s goal is she wants to peel away and get into intimacy, communication, truth-telling — and the lack of truth-telling.”
Helen is a sympathetic character because she loves her husband, who left her with three headstrong children to raise. And she didn’t see it coming. “She didn’t fall down,” said Tierney. “People stop noticing things, like how difficult the intrusion of her parents are, how hurtful it was to her husband that she was still taking money from them. You get used to a certain way of doing things. It’s the accruing of small tiny things you let slide, and you led slide, and then there’s a big chasm.”
While Helen tries on several romantic interests over the course of the series, she never stops loving Noah. “He’s a romantic ideal for her, even if she took him for granted,” said Tierney. “He’s very charming and sexy, very much the person she fell in love with.”
Some of the juiciest dramatic scenes involve Helen finally standing up to her bossy mother (the formidable Kathleen Chalfont). “Those were some of my favorites,” said Tierney. “Chalfont is wonderful; she plays the character so well…when Helen says to ‘shut up,’ it was satisfying. Margaret needed to shut up!”
Another favorite episode reunites Helen and Noah during his book tour. “We shot both of those restaurant scenes in one day, back to back,” said Tierney. “Sixteen pages of dialogue is a lot, with back-to-back POVs.”
That episode was shot by Laura Innes, her old “E.R.” cohort who’s now a top TV director. “We’re good friends,” said Tierney, “but she’s very demanding. It’s a little daunting. I always forget: ‘Yay! Laura’s directing!’ But she’s demanding, which is a good thing. You feel like you don’t want to let her down.”
When Tierney landed a Golden Globe nomination, that was shocking enough, she said. But when she won, “I could barely talk. I was really surprised.” She managed to recover. “The Affair” will start production on season 3 in August.

While the first season of The Affair focused on the relationship between Noah and Alison and what drove them towards cheating in the first place, the show’s second season has focused more on how the characters deal with the aftermath. While Helen and Cole have both spiralled from the abrupt dissolution of their marriages, the two have begun to come to terms with the change in their life, just as Noah and Alison hit a rough patch in theirs as they get to know each other better, in a compelling pair of episodes.
Alison’s reaction to Yvonne and Noah’s book this week is the biggest evidence to date of her difficulty in adjusting to life outside Montauk.

As The Librarians returns to Syfy UK, we chatted to Noah Wyle about directing, Falling Skies, and Jonathan Frakes peeing in a dumpster…
Since he first appeared as medical student John Carter in the Emergency Room of County General Hospital, Ill., Noah Wyle has specialised in playing a particular type of brainy hero. During his record-breaking tenure in ER, Wyle was notably the first to portray a fictional version of Steve Jobs in biopic Pirates Of Silicon Valley, a part that earned him an invitation from Mr Jobs to play a prank on the audience at the 1999 Macworld Expo.
Among a host of stage and screen roles, Wyle also played the small but memorable role of Dr Monitoff, a science teacher with an interest in parallel universes in 2001's Donnie Darko, followed in 2004 with the part of Flynn Carsen, perpetual student-turned-Indiana-Jones-type in three The Librarian television movies.

It’s not uncommon for actors on long-running shows to take a turn in the director’s chair. Some even turn that into their full-time job, like Laura Innes or Peter Horton. It’s rare that you see an actor be given quite so complicated an episode for his first directing job as “The Americans” handed Noah Emmerich tonight. The episode (which I reviewed here) had an action scene, suspense at FBI headquarters and a lot of tricky emotional material for Emmerich to both direct and, in several scenes, play. Earlier this week, we talked about how the assignment came about, what he learned from other “Americans” directors, and how he got the show to dip back into the Fleetwood Mac catalog after the early success with “Tusk.” How did it come about first of all that you were going to direct an episode? Noah Emmerich: It was something...

How To Get Away With Murder, Season 1, Episodes 14 & 15: “The Night Lila Died” and “It’s All My Fault”
Directed by Laura Innes and Bill D’Elia
Written by Michael Foley and Peter Norwalk
Airs Thursdays at 9 Pm and 10 Pm on ABC
How To Get Away With Murder wraps up its season with a two-hour finale that solves the central mystery while leaving some questions unanswered. Some of the episode is a slog, padded out by yet another snoozy case of the week, but the last 10 minutes are as suspenseful as anything on television. If Peter Norwalk and the writers can figure out how to drop the procedural element of the show and more fully explore the actions of the regular characters, some of whom are not much more fleshed out than when the series began, the show will be much improved in season 2.
But that final sequence is fantastic,...

The Fury
Written by John Farris
Directed by Brian De Palma
USA, 1978
In this action-suspense picture packed with paranormal activity, Kirk Douglas plays government agent Peter Sandza, whose telepathic son (Andrew Stevens) has been kidnapped by his colleague Ben Childress (John Cassavetes), working for a CIA-like secret government agency that plans to exploit the boy’s psychic abilities for warfare. Sandza’s desperate search for his son brings him into contact with a teenage girl named Gillian (Amy Irving), who also has strong Esp powers. He gains her trust, and together, they join forces in the hope of saving his son Robin before it’s too late.
Brian De Palma’s immediate successor to Carrie was The Fury, a supernatural horror/espionage/occult/mindfuck of a movie, which, like Carrie, manages a similar variation on the theme of teenagers using telekinetic powers to exercise repressed feelings. And The Fury, not unlike Carrie,...

Previously, On Warehouse 13
It's been a long, strange trip for Steve Jinks. Murdered by Rusty Griswold, he was brought back to life by Claudia, only to have his new existence threatened at every turn by the artifact she used, Johann Maelzel's Metronome. If the inverted pendulum thingy on the metronome stops, so does Steve's heart (so it's probably a good thing that the pendulum is self-powered. I'd hate to have to frantically fumble around trying to find fresh double A batteries while Steve is gasping for air).
Not only that, but the downside of the artifact is that Claudia can feel Steve's pain (and not in a Counselor Troi way), so they're both in constant extreme danger, which really isn't conducive to being a Warehouse Agent.
Happily, that arc comes to an end with this episode, which also sees Artie triple-teamed by Helena, Mrs. Fredric and Leena. Pray for him.

Okay, raise your hand if you were shocked that Steve got off the metronome this quickly.
Same here.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad that Steve and Claudia aren’t tied together at the nerve endings anymore. I’m just surprised they opted to only have him on the metronome for seven episodes. Honestly, I’m grateful they didn’t run the gimmick into the ground to the point that we wanted Steve dead again just to get rid of it.
But, wow... what away to get rid of it. Seems like Steve was not the only one who got a "Second Chance." As we went to learn more about Steve’s sister Olivia, we met his mom Emma Jinks (played by the incredible Laura Innes) and we found out why they are not in agreement about his sister's death. I’m glad we got to see Steve...

She began her career as a writer on Melrose Place in 1993 and eventually joined the team at E.R., where she fought for the Kerry Weaver storyline that was one of the turning points for major lesbian characters on network television. Last night, viewers of Warehouse 13 got to see something unusual, the return of a dead character, and a beloved one at that. Steve Jinks, played by Aaron Ashmore, was brought back by his fiercely determined (and coifed) Claudia. Back at the end of June we spoke to Aaron about his return, the idea of creating a gay character icon, and what's in store for Steve this year. Something that doesn't come across in print that was a joy of the conversation is that Aaron laughs, a lot. It's a deep, genuine fun laugh that he hasn't been able to bring to the show so far. We also break the news of who is going to play his mother later this season.
AfterElton: We're talking to Aaron Ashmore, who made his triumphant return to Warehouse 13, which was somewhat unexpected since he'd been dead for three days.

Ray Richmond contributes to Deadline’s TV coverage. Actors like to dabble. It’s how Ron Howard went from Happy Days to feature-directing greatness. So it’s no surprise that those who have the opportunity take the plunge to write and direct for TV. Historically, actors have had their share of Emmy good fortune, most recently including comedy writing wins for Tina Fey (30 Rock), Garry Shandling (The Larry Sanders Show) and Ellen DeGeneres (Ellen) and drama series nominations for Denis Leary (writing, Rescue Me), Laura Innes (directing, The West Wing) and Steve Buscemi (directing, The Sopranos). We caught up with five such multi-faceted souls who will be submitting for Emmy consideration this year in categories outside of their performances. They discussed what it is that inspires them to move to the other side of the camera. Bryan Cranston (Star of AMC’s drama Breaking Bad, directed the Modern Family episode...
