1990s teen hit Clueless has been brought to the stage of London’s West End by the film’s original writer and director Amy Heckerling, who has focused on keeping the 90s theme integral to the story.
Heckerling told BBC News that she has “no interest in being modern,” and has stuck closely to the original story. The 1995 film, inspired by Jane Austen’s novel Emma and starring Alicia Silverstone as lead character Cher and took $88million at the box office. It was credited with inspiring similar teen school dramas including Mean Girls, Gossip Girl and Legally Blonde.
And she admitted neither the original film nor the musical are documents of real LA life for most citizens. Heckerling told the BBC she wished the original film had been a musical, because “”there were natural moments in the script where characters could have sung.”

King of the Hill’s Luanne Platter: World’s okay-est hairdresser, creator and host of the puppet show Manger Babies and a delicious Texan meal?
Before Lucky Kleinschmidt comes to kick my ass — or more realistically, tries his namesake luck at suing me — I should clarify that I mean the latter descriptor in the literal sense. Platter, like many King of the Hill characters, appears to have gotten her name from a Lone Star State institution: The LuAnn platter at Texas chain restaurant, Luby’s.
Pairing “a select entree” like “Fried Fish,” “Bacon Cheese Steak” or “French Grilled Liver” with “two sides and a roll” for an unspecified “great low price” per Luby’s website, the LuAnn platter has come to define the decades-old Southern cafeteria, putting it on the map as a “Texas comfort food staple,” as the Houston Chronicle once called it.

Roger Ebert was one of the most prominent voices in the movie industry for decades. A film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times, Ebert wrote thousands of film reviews from 1967 until he died in 2013. Filmmakers waited with bated breath for his reviews of their films while readers trusted his every word when deciding which film to go see. Ebert influenced generations of critics and moviegoers not only through his prose but also by helping draw attention to certain independent and international films as well as upstart filmmakers.
Ebert has reviewed films of just about any genre, so it's only natural he'd have reviewed plenty of comic book films along the way. While Ebert reviewed most of them negatively, there were a handful of comic book films he truly enjoyed, giving nine of them a perfect four stars out of four along with a couple that fell short with three and a half stars.

Kelly Clarkson took it back to 1995 for her latest Kellyoke cover. The singer revamped the Nineties Britpop classic “Alright” by Supergrass.
Clarkson was the picture of a carefree queen as she performed the upbeat song, smiling and dancing along while wearing a simple white shirt and trousers. The singer used her signature vibrato to refresh the hit song, while her backing band, My Band Y’all, stayed true to the track’s piano-laden melody and synth production. As Clarkson trilled the lines “We are young, we run green,” emerald lights glowed behind her.

Anthony Mackie became one of Hollywood’s hottest stars with his lead role as Captain America in Captain America: Brave New World, which premiered on Feb 14. But Mackie has been part of the Marvel Universe since 2014, when he took on the role of Falcon (Sam Wilson) in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Although Steve Rogers gave him the shield already in Avengers: Endgame (2019), Mackie’s character, Sam Wilson, was unsure about taking on the role. After John Walker briefly became Captain America, Sam ultimately decided to embrace the title by the end of the Disney+ series.
In his 23-year screen career, Mackie has played diverse characters. He portrayed Harry Mitchell, a junior adjustment agent in The Adjustment Bureau (which earned him two award nominations), and Sergeant J.T. Sanborn in The Hurt Locker, for which he won in the “Best Ensemble Cast” category and was nominated as “Best Supporting Actor” at the Independent Spirit Awards.

King of the Hill was a strong show from the very beginning. In its first year, Entertainment Weekly and Time included it on their Best TV of the Year lists. But, it truly defined itself and stood out from other Fox animated series like The Simpsons with its bold two-parter “Propane Boom” and “Propane Boom II: Death of a Propane Salesman.” “Propane Boom” was the Season 2 finale and ended with an explosion at Mega-lo-Mart while Hank Hill (Mike Judge), Luanne Platter (Brittany Murphy), and Buckley (David Herman) were inside. Between episodes, Fox ran promos speculating which of these characters had died. The cliffhanger and the subsequent character death were more than a publicity stunt. They were an important arc that showed audiences exactly how good King of the Hill could be.

For whatever reason, Hollywood doesn't produce movies like "Legally Blonde" anymore. Brightly colored, fun, and undeniably optimistic, this Reese Witherspoon comedy succinctly captures the zeitgeist of the early 2000s, and it now serves as a time capsule to a more innocent time when it felt possible for a fashion merchandising student to usurp the Harvard snobs and become a full-fledged lawyer. Truly, director Robert Luketic's upbeat tone, to say nothing of Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith's snappy script, is a key reason for the film's enduring success -- it's the perfect underdog tale, featuring a likable character worth rooting for and an uplifting message about staying true to yourself and persevering in the face of adversity.
"Legally Blonde" earned solid reviews from critics, earned a pair of Golden Globe nominations, including one for Witherspoon, made a killing at the box office, led to two sequels (and counting), and even spawned a musical.

This week saw the 15th anniversary of the death of Brittany Murphy, and one of her co-stars took the occasion to remember her fondly.
Murphy died on December 20, 2009, and Katie O’Grady, who worked alongside her on her final film Something Wicked, described Murphy as being like “a little bird you wanted to be around and you wanted to help.”
O’Grady told People magazine that Murphy’s cast and crew were all concerned and mindful of Murphy’s physical and mental condition, and tried to be “soft” with her while on set. O’Grady recalled the late actress looking “frail” and noticeably “going through a hard time” while filming the movie.

Movies based on comic books are usually safe ventures for studios. These films are designed for mass appeal, and there’s little incentive to reinvent the wheel when adapting a comic into a movie. However, some brave auteurs have chosen to push the artistic boundaries of the comic book movie genre, resulting in some of the most visually stunning films ever made.
Directors have two primary paths when creating a highly stylized comic book movie. They can make the film closely resemble the comic or introduce a unique twist that transforms it into something entirely new, even within broader cinematic genres. Regardless of the approach, comics provide an excellent foundation for filmmakers to push the limits of visual effects, set design, costumes, and practical effects.

The infamous home where Brittany Murphy and her husband, Simon Monjack, died just five months apart is back on the market. The home is currently listed at $17,995,000 by Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles alum David Parents of Carolwood Estates. You can see photos and details about it here. The Hollywood Hills home’s current owners purchased the property in 2020. The owners had briefly listed the six-bedroom, nine-bathroom, 9,400 sq ft house this past summer with a price tag of $19 million, and then again on December 6 for just under $18 million. This Friday, December 20, marks 15 years since Murphy collapsed in the home at age 32; she was later taken to the Cedars-Sinai Hospital, where she died the same day. Five months later, her husband, Monjack, was found dead on the property. At the time, the Los Angeles Coroner’s revealed that Murphy died from a combination of pneumonia, anemia, and prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

The '90s was a complicated time to be a TV teen. While the kids of "Beverly Hills, 90210" and "Melrose Place" were entrenched in constant scandalous teen drama, a gentler, more family-friendly version of teen life was drawing in audiences on ABC. "Boy Meets World" ran for an impressive 158 episodes, from 1993 to 2000, and remains a pop cultural touchstone — albeit not quite as potent of one as its cattier primetime counterparts — to this day.
Like every memorable sitcom, "Boy Meets World" knew how to pick a guest star, and several of the actors who showed up across its seven-season run went on to be pretty dang famous. In a few cases, people who were already big-name actors at the time also dropped in on the kids of John Adams High. If you watched the show at a young age, though, you'd be forgiven for not recognizing the industry veterans and...

It’s undeniable that there’s no one quite like Charlie Sheen, and when Ashton Kutcher stepped in to fill his shoes on Two and a Half Men, the results were less than stellar. But over the years, Kutcher has found himself in his own fair share of controversies, arguably rivaling Sheen’s infamous reputation.

Most recently, his involvement with Diddy has reignited scrutiny. Here’s a look at other moments when Ashton Kutcher stirred up Hollywood drama and proved to be just as “controversial” as Sheen, if not more so.
1. Defending Convicted R-pist Danny Masterson
Funny how Ashton Kutcher went from replacing one controversial star to racking up his own set of scandals. The most infamous? His defense of Danny Masterson.

It’s not uncommon to see the same actor playing several different roles at the same time, especially on TV shows.
Shawn Hatosy has a role on Rescue: Hi-Surf but is also a recurring face on Chicago Pd. Both roles portray Hatosy as an entitled white male in charge who’s not afraid to bend the rules to get his way.
It’s not the first time Hatosy has taken on roles that depict him negatively. He’s one of those actors who is great at playing a jerky bad guy. However, he also has numerous memorable characteristics as an okay guy.

Hatosy fans from the ’90s might remember him from his early days when he took on awkward teen roles to expand his filmography.

In Sunday’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the comic host delved into one of the main talking points having come out of this month’s presidential debate: that of the GOP ticket’s parroting of a baseless racist dog whistle regarding the Haitian immigrant community in Springfield, Ohio.
Oliver began the segment by playing Donald Trump’s much-memed and discussed clip where he falsely claimed that Haitians were eating pets, a notion that running mate Jd Vance had circulated (and since walked back) and that originated in neo-Nazi groups.
In playing a video of Vance discussing the discredited conspiracy theory, the VP candidate is seen mispronouncing the Caribbean nation as “Haitia.”

When we think of monsters on this channel, most of the time its from a fictional, mythical, or legendary monster like the Mummy, Wolfman, Dracula, or Frankenstein’s Monster. On this specific show, however, a Monster can take on a whole new meaning. I joke that half of these episodes will be about reportedly true possessions and while that will probably hold fast, there is another type of monster we have discussed a few times. The guy that loosely inspired the Scream killings, Henry from Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, and today’s subject Aileen Wuornos. The movie made about her is literally called Monster and put director Patty Jenkins and star Charlize Theron, at least in terms of her being seen as an A list actor who can actually act, on the map. It’s a straightforward telling of a murderer that of course adds nuance and even...

Selma Blair’s teen son Arthur has crossed a major first off his list: he’s finally watched one of his mom’s movie’s, something Blair told People she’s tried — and failed — to get him to do for years. Unfortunately, she added, the 13-year-old watched “Cruel Intentions.”

After so many years trying to get a Janis Joplin biopic off the ground, Shailene Woodley seems to be the star who will make it happen. Janis Joplin is one of the most iconic and influential singers of all time, as during her brief career in the late 60s she became a cultural icon and is considered the Queen of Rock. Joplin tragically passed away in 1970 at the age of 27 following a heroin overdose, but her legacy has lived on, and her story is one that some of the most respected and talented stars in Hollywood have tried to make to no avail until now.
Variety reports that Shailene Woodley will star in and produce an upcoming Janis Joplin biopic. Shailene Woodley has been tapped to play the rock icon Janis Joplin in a new biopic.
Variety reports that Woodley has joined the cast of the film and will produce as well. The yet-to-be-named biopic is being funded by a $2.5 million tax credit from the state of California’s Film Commission, and per Variety, will have a $10 million budget for “qualified expenditures.”
We don’t know much else about the film, but Woodley wrote in a statement that she’s excited to tell Joplin’s story in California specifically. “California meant so much to Janis Joplin — from the stoops of San Francisco to the wooden walls of Sunset Sound, the state became the stage upon which she explored not just the world of music, but the world of her vibrant humanity,” she wrote.

While the late actor may not be one of the most recognized in Hollywood, the best Christian Oliver movies and TV shows reveal the underappreciated depth of his talent. Born in Germany in 1972, Christian Oliver tragically passed away along with his two daughters in a plane crash in the Caribbean in early 2024. His career was still incredibly active at the time of his passing, and from his earliest appearances in movies like The Baby-Sitters Club through to TV thrillers like 2020's Hunters, he showcased a versatility few actors can match.
German actor Christian Oliver starred alongside an incredible number of Hollywood A-Listers including Tom Cruise, George Clooney, and Cate Blanchett. He was a reliable and dependable talent, adding a level of authenticity to any movie or TV show he starred in, whether it was a central role, a minor character, or even simply additional voice-work to add immersion to a scene.

Reese Witherspoon almost played Cher in Clueless but ultimately lost the role to Alicia Silverstone. The success of Legally Blonde spawned a franchise, but Witherspoon only returned for the direct sequel. A prequel TV series called Elle, following a teenage Elle Woods, is in the works alongside Legally Blonde 3.
Reese Witherspoon has had various memorable roles on the big screen, among them Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, but she almost played another iconic rom-com blonde six years earlier. Witherspoons acting career began in 1991 with the TV film Wildflower and the coming-of-age movie The Man in the Moon, but her big break arrived with the 1998 teen fantasy comedy-drama Pleasantville. As a former teenage Midwest beauty queen myself, "Drop Dead Gorgeous" speaks to me on a religious level. My blood is not red, it is Mount Rose, and I am an American Teen Princess Pageant girl for life. "Drop Dead Gorgeous" turns 25 this year — one of the many teen girl masterpieces released in 1999 — but is still criminally underseen due to the film's poor box office performance at the time of release and subsequent years of physical releases being out of print. It's a shame because the cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Ellen Barkin, Allison Janney, Kirstie Alley, Denise Richards, Brittany Murphy, Amy Adams (her debut role!), Alexandra Holden, Nora Dunn, Mo Gaffney, Will Sasso, Matt Malloy, Mike McShane, Mindy Sterling, Sam McMurray, and...

It was clear Brittany Murphy (ne Bertolotti) was destined for fame from a young age. After attending the Verne Fowler School of Dance and Theater Arts in New Jersey, Murphy's family relocated to Los Angeles so she could pursue her acting career. She earned her first major TV role at the age of just 13, playing Brenda Drexell in the sitcom Drexell's Class. Murphy's breakout into features came a few years later, when she landed the role of Tai Frasier in the teen comedy Clueless.

Brittany Murphy's final film, Something Wicked, was released five years after her death, disappointing fans with its delayed and lackluster production. Despite a haunting plot and Murphy as the lead, the film received poor audience reviews and a limited theatrical release, likely leading to a box office bomb. Unfortunately, Murphy's career ended before the release of Something Wicked.
Brittany Murphy was one of Hollywood's biggest rising stars in the late '90s and 2000s. That career was cut tragically short when she passed away in 2009 from an accidental overdose at just 32 years old. Some of her best-known roles included Clueless, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Girl, Interrupted, 8 Mile, and a voice role in King of the Hill. While personal issues led to her career stalling shortly before her passing, she could likely have enjoyed even more success in the coming years. But in a way, her career did live on after she was gone.

Tinker Bell has evolved from a silent character to a beloved Disney icon, even spawning her own film series beginning in the 2000s. Disney made significant changes to Tinker Bell in 2008, including giving her a voice and toning down her fiery temper for a broader audience. Despite rumors of a canceled final installment, the Disney Fairies franchise has been a marginal success since its early 2000s debut.
Best known now as a Disney icon, the sassy fairy Tinker Bell has come a long way since her introduction in J.M. Barrie's 1904 play, Peter Pan, followed by its novelization in 1911. Since the beginning of the Disney Fairies franchise in 2005, with the children's book The Trouble with Tink, Disney has produced six feature-length animated films, as well as two television shorts starring Tinker Bell and her fairy friends.
