Jessica Simpson is sitting on a thrifted green banquette in her Nashville music room, wondering if Sister Rosetta Tharpe is trying to send us a message. We’d been talking about the late godmother of rock & roll, who Simpson just described as “the most badass” of all potential badasses, when the silver resonator guitar behind her rung out a dissonant note entirely on its own. Was it contact from the great musical beyond, or just Simpson bumping the neck against the window? Who even cares either way? Simpson, after more...

Amy Irving, star of 1976’s Carrie, 1983’s Yentl and 1988’s Crossing Delancey, is opening up about her romantic history — and admits she has a type: directors.
“I grew up with a father for a director,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast, referring to her late dad Jules Irving, co-founder of San Francisco Actor’s Workshop. “I have done nothing but marry directors, so I have a thing for directors. I’m kind of in awe because I can’t do that. Actors don’t impress me as much — just because I can do that, too.”
Her current husband is documentary filmmaker Kenneth Bowser. Prior to that she was married to Brazilian auteur Bruno Barreto. And before Barreto, she was married to Steven Spielberg.
“I don’t know how long I was married to [Steven,]” Irving, 71, says. “But we were together for 14 years — with three years off for good behavior.

Starring Timothée Chalamet as a young, emerging Bob Dylan throughout the early and mid-1960s, A Complete Unknown tracks the events leading up to Dylan’s infamous electric Newport Folk Festival set in 1965 as well as his relationships with fellow folk figures Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro), Pete Seeger (Edward Norton), Sylvie Russo (Elle Fanning), and Woody Guthrie (Scoot McNairy).
The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards at the 2025 Oscars, including Best Actor for Chalamet, ultimately winning none. “Everybody’s just in the best mood and it gets better and better throughout the day,” I overheard a fan say Thursday afternoon at the 2025 Luck Reunion. His observation was spot-on. For its 13th year, the boutique festival held on Willie Nelson’s Luck Ranch in Spicewood, Texas — just outside of Austin, as the song goes — proved to be unlike any music fest on earth.

Over the decades, Carlos Santana has collaborated with jazz legends (Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter), rock guitarists (Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan), blues greats (Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker), R&b singers (Smokey Robinson, Lauryn Hill), and even country artists (Willie Nelson, Faith Hill). The results were sometimes worldwide hits like “Smooth” (with Rob Thomas) or “Maria Maria” (with Wyclef Jean), but others fell between the cracks and never found the audience they deserved.

There’s a sentimental heart to Michael Mann’s films, as much as his fans might not like to hear about it. Run a movie like Heat or Thief alongside the finest crime novels of the same bygone era Mann taps as fuel for his ongoing, elegiac meta-saga on heist men, bag men, and hit men. Run them against key works by Westlake, Chandler, Hammett, or Bezzerides—authors whose heroes and antiheroes are all hard, bad edges. In Mann’s world, sentimentality is front and center, the prize beyond the horizon for the Los Angeles cab driver, the storied Depression-era stickup man, or the Miami vice cop. It’s the reason for some of those mournful stares, those knowing half-smiles that punctuate your Miami Vice, your Public Enemies.
At the same time, these stories may also be that of the sentimental dream being crushed, its embers stubbed out by crippling disappointment.

Neil Young has announced plans to play a free concert in Ukraine to kick off the European leg of the Love Earth tour.
Young will be performing across Europe, Canada, and the US, with his band, The Chrome Hearts, who he introduced last year at Farm Aid, the annual benefit concert for American farmers. The rocker co-founded Farm Aid with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp in 1985 in a bid to help US family farmers who were at risk of foreclosure, and concerts have since included sourcing locally produced products into the concert ecosystem, boosting the local economies while reducing waste.
The exact plans for the free concert have not yet been set, but it will be Young’s first time playing in Ukraine. He has been a vocal backer of the war-torn country since Russian President Putin first began the invasion in 2022.

“Michael Mann’s “Thief” is a film of style, substance, and violently felt emotion, all wrapped up in one of the most intelligent thrillers I’ve seen.” – Roger Ebert
Glistening wet streets, intense neon lights, transient spaces, reflective objects, cool-blue color palette, and a pulsating score. Yeah, it’s all the recognizable nuggets of Michael Mann’s visual style, which isn’t just about remaining ‘showy’, but also remains wholly attuned to the story’s emotional textures. And, what’s fascinating about these confident and meticulous visuals is that Mann accomplished it all in his feature-film debut “Thief” (1981) itself.
The recurring themes in Mann’s works involving hardened, urban males are also present here. A single, rigorous frame and handful of colorful dialogues in “Thief” could serve as a fine blueprint for cinephiles on what to expect from Mann’s masterful film-making skills. Thematic and narrative wise, Mann’s debut...

A massive trove of live performances from the late-Nineties/early-Aughts glory days of music television has finally made it to the streaming era, with Paramount+ uploading old episodes of MTV Unplugged, CMT Crossroads, and VH1 Storytellers.

Willie Nelson Saddled up for This Totally Underseen, 100% Rotten Tomatoes-Rated Western Revenge Tale
One of the key reasons that the Western genre became such a prominent aspect of the cinematic landscape during the “Golden Age of Hollywood”was that it was built off the backs of iconic stars who audiences became well acquainted with over the course of many films. While traditional Western sequels were actually rather few and far between, audiences could walk into a new film starring Gary Cooper, Yul Brennar, James Stewart, John Wayne, or Steve McQueen, expecting them to play some sort of ruthless gunslinger with a heart of gold. There’s certainly value in actors knowing what they are good at, but it’s also interesting to see films that feature less traditional stars in the leading roles. Among its many underrated qualities, the 1981 WesternBarbarosa featured a star-making performance from the legendary musician Willie Nelson.

"The little woman wrote giant works of art." Greenwich Ent, has revealed the official trailer for a music biopic documentary film titled Janis Ian: Breaking Silence, made by doc filmmaker Varda Bar-Kar. This first premiered at Doc NYC last year and opens in US theaters at the end of March this spring. The life and songbook of Janis Ian mirrored the awakening of American women in the 1960s & '70s, as they found their voices and embraced their power during this time of change. In the 1960s, as a teenager, acclaimed American singer-songwriter Janis Ian used to jam with Jimi Hendrix in Greenwich Village bars and partied with Janis Joplin, who jokingly called herself "the other Janis." She later befriended Bruce Springsteen as they simultaneously recorded albums at the same studio. In the 80s, she played duets with Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson in Nashville. She lived the adventurous life of a rock star.

When Taylor Swift announced Cowboy Carter as Best Country Album at Sunday’s Grammys, Beyoncé looked genuinely shocked. The global superstar is no stranger to the Grammy podium — after all, she holds the record for most Grammy wins, with 32 total trophies including this year’s crop — but, from her reaction, it seems she did not expect recognition from the very genre that inspired her ambitious and deeply personal eighth studio album.
And why would she? Despite earning more nominations at this year’s Grammy Awards than any other record, Cowboy...

Though the folksy instrumentation of “Mud” is lively, the lyrics dive into the difficulties of a complex relationship. “So if I call you up tomorrow,” she sings. “Screaming ‘I’m not the one’/ To be privy to your fiction/ Help you get your shit together/ I’m a fool in angel’s clothing.”

Do you ever have one of those nights where everything just clicks into place? Like you’re at a party, and everything—from the music to the company—just feels perfectly synced? That’s what the 2025 Grammys felt like to most of us. It was a celebration of resilience, art, and, of course, style. Take Taylor Swift, for example!
She showed up looking like she stepped out of a fairy tale, only her magic wasn’t in a wand—it was in that red dress and those ruby earrings. If fashion could speak, her outfit would’ve been shouting, “I’m here, and I’m ready to make history.” And Beyoncé? Don’t even get us started.

“Free Leonard Peltier,” the new documentary about the imprisoned Indigenous activist, whose life sentence was just commuted to house imprisonment by President Joe Biden days before this film’s Sundance premiere, is a useful primer for viewers new to his case. But it’s not much of a film, and it’s even unclear what kind of film its directors Jesse Short Bull and David France wish it to be.
This is a documentary as a textbook — we’d say it’s like a Wikipedia summary, except checking actual Wikipedia is almost essential for making sense of certain events presented in “Free Leonard Peltier” — providing a broad overview without delving deeper into the humanity of Peltier or why his story matters. It opens in the near-present with Native American activists coming to Washington to plead Peltier’s case, one even saying that overturning Peltier’s conviction has not just been...

Timothée Chalamet Covers Three ‘Personal Favorite’ Bob Dylan Deep Tracks in ‘SNL’ Musical Appearance
The Bob Dylan song choices Timothée Chalamet picked for his “Saturday Night Live” musical appearance were… well, completely unknown to most of the viewing audience. The actor’s dip into more obscure choices delighted many Dylanologists who tuned in, even as his picks defied expectations that he would recreate songs he performed as Dylan in “A Complete Unknown,” which turned out to be the furthest thing from his mind.
In his opening monolog as host, Chalamet signaled that viewers would be surprised by the choices during his musical segment. “You might not know the Bob Dylan songs I’m performing, but they’re my personal favorites,” he told the audience. “I’m so grateful ‘Saturday Night Live’ is still doing weird stuff like this 50 years in. They’re either really nice for letting me do this or incredibly mean and this is all a big prank.”

Although Hank Hill may prefer the musical stylings of Willie Nelson and Jethro Tull, he has emerged as an unsung hero of a campy pop subgenre, his now-iconic outburst at a Cigarenders meeting serving as the inspiration for hyperpop duo 100 gecs’ single, “money machine,” now at 110 million listens on Spotify and counting.
Hank’s road to hyperpop stardom was born at roughly the same time as many of the genre’s Gen Z fans — in 1997. Attending a stop-smoking support group alongside his wife Peggy and his son Bobby during Season One’s “Keeping Up with Our Joneses,” a cranky, nicotine-deprived Hank didn’t mince words when the meeting’s host dared to question his willpower.
“You’re callin’ me weak?” he snapped. “Look at your little birdy arms, they’re no thicker than a cigarette! I could smoke them little arms!”
If this refrain sounds familiar, you’re not huffing...
