Halloweens villain Michael Myers has become a cinematic icon and a favorite among horror fans, and while many are aware that Michael Myers was originally named The Shape, they might not know why. The Halloween franchise has seen many ups and downs with multiple retcons, remakes, and reboots of the series. Though not all Halloween films have been successful, they have certainly helped maintain the popularity and reputation of Michael Myers, who is now part of pop culture, being referred to and parodied on multiple occasions in different films and TV shows from all genres.
Michael Myers is credited as "The Shape in the original Halloween before being officially credited as "Michael Myers" in the sequels, only for the most recent Halloween trilogy, including Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, to return to crediting him as The Shape. Halloween is almost upon us and just a few days away. It calls for scary decorations, a spiced pumpkin latte, a blanket fort, and spooky movies with family and friends. Nothing screams Halloween more than the Halloween film franchise. There are thirteen films in the series; Michael Myers is the prime character of this franchise and a very popular character in the world of movies. Myers is one of the Big Three Slashers – Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th Series, Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street horror film franchise, and Michael Meyers.

Considering the long span of the Halloween franchise, knowing who plays Michael Myers is tough, especially with more than one person often playing the slasher killer in each movie. Most of the scenes in the original 1978 Halloween film saw Michael hiding in the shadows before he finally launched his attack on Laurie Strode and her friends. As a result, multiple people filled Michael's shoes for the movie. Throughout the years, there have been 13 movies featuring Michael Myers.
As the franchise rolled on, the masked killer took a more prominent role and a few actors became well-known for portraying the man referred to in the Halloween scripts as The Shape. These movies included the original timeline, an alternate timeline where Laurie died and her daughter Jamie Lloyd became the Final Girl, another where Laurie lived and Michael kept trying to kill her, yet another with Rob Zombie's reboot, and finally...

The premise of John Carpenter's 1981 science fiction film "Escape from New York" is the stuff of drive-in dreams. In the near future of 1997, crime will skyrocket and New York City will become so overrun with lawlessness that the government will simply wall off the entire island of Manhattan and turn it into a massive, no-rules penitentiary. When Air Force One is shot down by political dissidents (!), the President evacuates in an escape pod that lands right in the middle of New York Prison. In order to rescue him, the government (represented by Lee Van Cleef) hires a grizzled, indifferent badass named Snake (Kurt Russell) to infiltrate the prison, find the President (Donald Pleasance), and ... escape from New York. It's B-movie gold.
While traversing the ruined streets of a futuristic New York, Snake invariably runs afoul of the gangs and warlords who have risen to power on the inside. He...

Horror movies are often intense experiences, sometimes not just for the audience but also for the cast and crew making them behind-the-scenes. From maintaining raw emotions on high for effective performances to less than ideal filming conditions, making a horror movie can be grueling work, to the point that some actors occasionally regret starring in them.
On top of the heightened rigors of the job, the attention to gruesome detail in capturing such visceral material can literally make the actors on set sick to their stomachs. There are numerous horror movies that went so hard that they made the actors involved physically ill during the production. This ranges from the physical extremes of method acting and abusively megalomaniacal directors to actors becoming severely sick during filming. However, no matter the ailment, the show must go on, often with those afflicted actors' performances in the final film. Here are the biggest...

In 2017, horror fans were ecstatic when it was announced that the king of the slashers, Michael Myers, would be returning in a new film. While there was some confusion in the choice of director (David Gordon Green was best known for the stoner comedy Pineapple Express), doubts were soon calmed when details of the new take on the series came out. For decades, the story of The Shape had become more and more outlandish. It started in the original Halloween 2 when it’s revealed that Michael (Dick Warlock) and Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) are brother and sister. It went off the rails with a cult subplot in later films and Rob Zombie’s vision that saw Michael as a hulking madman who kills because he was bullied and misses his mom.

In John Carpenter's 1978 film "Halloween," the masked killer Michael Myers was played by multiple actors. For the bulk of his scenes, Michael — called "The Shape" — was played by Nick Castle, a film school friend of Carpenter's and a director in his own right. Castle also directed "The Last Starfighter" and "The Boy Who Could Fly." As a small boy, Michael Myers was played, in one scene, by an actor named Will Sandin in his first and last role on screen. In Pov shots, the hands of young Michael were provided by co-writer and producer Debra Hill, while the unmasked Michael — who appears only briefly at the very end of the movie — was played by Tony Moran.
Castle had the lion's share of screen time, however, and is generally thought of as the "official" Michael Myers by "Halloween" fans the world over. Castle would reprise the role for David Gordon Green...

What defines a horror movie slasher killer? Not all of them speak, so we can't talk about voice. Not all of them stick to a single signature weapon, so we have to find another avenue. The easy answer is the mask, but even that changes -- Jason Voorhees wore a bag over his head before he found that hockey mask in his franchise's third film. So maybe it comes down to the walk. Jason is a lumbering beast, stumbling forward and easily distracted, the bull in the china shop. Freddy Krueger is a demonic spider monkey, his elastic limbs flapping to the winds as he pursues his prey.
And Michael Myers, aka the Shape, of "Halloween" fame? He's the shark from "Jaws" in human form: a merciless predator who simply cannot be deterred. He moves like he has a plan, a merciless void powered by an alien intelligence. Jason acts on instinct.

After John Carpenter made "Halloween" in 1978, the director wasn't terribly interested in making a sequel. When it came time to write the screenplay for "Halloween II," however, a reluctant Carpenter sat in front of his typewriter, hammered on beers, kind of at a loss as to where this story was going to go. It was only by mere creative desperation that Carpenter conceived of the notion that Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) was secretly Michael Myers' sister.
In the first "Halloween," Michael Myers was played by various actors, although mostly by Nick Castle, an old friend of Carpenter's and a film director in his own right. In "Halloween II," Michael was played by a stuntman named Dick Warlock, an experienced performer who appeared in films like "The Love Bug" (he drove Herbie), "Blazing Saddles," and Carpenter's "Escape from New York."

A new episode of the Real Slashers video series has just been released, and with this one we’re looking back at one of the more popular installments in the franchise that shares its name with our favorite holiday, Halloween. The movie is 1981’s Halloween II (watch it Here), and to hear all about it, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Rick Rosenthal from a screenplay by John Carpenter and Debra Hill, Halloween II has the following synopsis: John Carpenter’s Halloween scared the living daylights out of 25 million people and set a precedent in smashing box-office records for a horror film. And now, prepare yourself to go one step further as the nightmare continues in Halloween II. Picking up precisely where its predecessor left off, Halloween II follows the same ill-fated characters as they encounter the knife-wielding terror they left for dead in the first Halloween. But...

Not even severe thunderstorm alerts could stop the rabid fans, who traveled not just from all over North America but as far as Finland, Scotland, and England to attend. Ticket sales reportedly doubled from the previous year’s already-commendable showing,...

Last year, Fright Rags got their “Stop the Killer” series of board games started with a board game inspired by the 1984 killer Santa classic Silent Night, Deadly Night (watch it Here). That was followed by a board game inspired by another classic slasher, the 1981 film My Bloody Valentine (watch it Here). And now Fright Rags has announced that they’ll be staying in 1981 for their third “film to board game” Stop the Killer project, which will be based on Halloween II (watch that Here)!

We had a video series here at JoBlo and Arrow in the Head called Where It Was Made a while back. Hosted and directed by Ryan Cultrera, the show was all about “revisiting the actual filming locations for some of the most popular films ever made and seeing how they’re holding up today, all while examining just how these locations were used in the finished film.” The premiere episode, released in 2015, gave a tour of the locations used for filming the 1978 classic Halloween. This Halloween, Where It Was Made is making its triumphant return in the most appropriate way possible: with an episode that gives a tour of the locations that were used for filming the 1981 sequel Halloween II (watch it Here)! It's up for debate whether or not "Halloween Ends" is going to be the actual end of the "Halloween" franchise. The more recent installments have seen wildly mixed reviews, with passionate stances coming from both sides of the aisle — but if there's one thing "Halloween" fans can agree on, it's their desire for more Michael Myers. That said, it appears that Jame Lee Curtis, our longtime heroine Laurie Strode, isn't the only pivotal cast member who claims she is saying goodbye to the story for good.
Myers actor James Jude Courtney confirmed that "Halloween Ends" would be his last time donning the mask during an interview with ScreenRant published on October 18, 2022. He said:
"You know, [director] David [Gordon Green], and Jamie and I have talked about this, we're done. We're done. I think, for me, to put this character down, Jamie and I were talking on the set towards the end,...

Basically obligated to make another Halloween sequel but hoping to leave Michael Myers behind, producers John Carpenter and Debra Hill decided to try to turn the franchise into an anthology series, where each film would tell a different story set on Halloween. Nigel Kneale was hired to write the initial script for what became Halloween III: Season of the Witch (watch it Here), and Carpenter and Hill’s pal Tommy Lee Wallace was hired to direct the film. After watching his movie get rejected by viewers when it was released in 1982 and then gain cult classic status over the decades, Wallace has taken it upon himself to write a tell-all book about the production of his Halloween sequel. The book is titled Halloween 3: Where the Hell is Michael Myers? – The Definitive History of Horror’s Most Misunderstood Film, and is going to be available from Bear Manor Media this November.

When John Carpenter’s The Thing hit theaters back in June 1982, the only thing scarier than the film were the reviews. Vincent Canby of The New York Times called it “instant junk” while Cinefantastique featured The Thing on one front cover alongside the question, “Is this the most hated movie of all time?”
Yet, if anything, the past 40 years has seen The Thing become one of the most beloved sci-fi horror movies of all time, influencing everything from Stranger Things to Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. To paraphrase Die Hard 2, it was simply a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, with Carpenter’s sci-fi led gorefest arriving alongside Blade Runner on June 25 of its year, just a few weeks after the family friendly alien fun of E.T.

When John Carpenter’s action classic “Escape from New York” premiered 40 years ago on July 10, 1981, moviegoers were treated to a dystopian nightmare unlike anything they’d seen before. Set in a grim future where the island of Manhattan has been converted into a giant maximum security prison, the film featured Kurt Russell in a career-defining role as Snake Plissken, a one-eyed Special Forces soldier turned master criminal who is tasked with saving the President of the United States when Air Force One crashes on the walled island.
Carpenter assembled a colorful cast of character actors to accompany Russell on his thrilling mission, including Ernest Borgnine, Harry Dean Stanton, Isaac Hayes and Donald Pleasence as the President. Aside from a brief appearance by Russell’s then-wife Season Hubley, the film’s lone female role was portrayed by Adrienne Barbeau, who was married to the director at the time and had made...

It's easy to mock the tagline for Season of the Witch, a misunderstood box office bomb in which the star slasher of the previous two films was nowhere to be seen. For horror fans, every day is Halloween during the month of October. This year, however, will be one for the books. We're just about 6 weeks shy from the premiere of Blumhouse's Halloween, slated to slash into Us theaters on October 19th. It's being billed as a direct sequel to John Carpenter's original Halloween (released in 1978) and will see Laurie Strode (played by Jamie Lee Curtis) reunited with original Michael Myers actor Nick Castle for a battle royale 40 years in the making. Word on the street is that the footage released at Comic-Con last July will hit the Internet tomorrow in the form of a brutal new trailer. Today, producers are whetting our collective appetites with a new poster, one that brings Laurie Strode face-to-face with "The Shape"!

Hollywood’s stunt performers — whose careers, like those of professional athletes, tend to decline after a certain age — have been lobbying the SAG Pension Plan, without success, for decades to allow them to retire with full benefits at age 55. They can currently take early retirement at that age but with a 30% reduction in pension benefits.
At its meeting this weekend, SAG-AFTRA’s national board of directors is expected to take up the issue in response to a resolution approved at the union’s convention in October, which urged the board to recommend to the Pension Plan’s trustees that they provide full pensions at age 55 to all members – like stunt performers and dancers – who work in physically taxing professions. In the past, however, the pension trustees have said that doing so would cost the Plan too much money.

John Carpenter's original Halloween is generally considered to be one of the greatest horror movies ever made. And with good reason. It introduced the world to Michael Myers, one of the most iconic figures not only in horror, but in the whole of cinema. Sadly, the original Michael Myers mask has been missing and thought to be long gone for more than a decade. Until now. That's right, horror fans. The original Michael Myers Halloween mask has been unearthed and a new picture of it in its current state has arrived online.
The mask, which was used in Halloween and Halloween II by actor Dick Warlock on screen, has been in the possession of a man who runs haunted attractions. For the last 14 years, a man by the name of Mark Roberts has owned not only the original mask, but the boots and scalpel Michael Myers used on screen as well.

Film aficionado Mark Roberts has uncovered a true horror relic.
As Halloween nears its 40th anniversary – John Carpenter’s iconic slasher originally birthed a legacy back in 1978 – Roberts has uncovered the ice-white mask worn by Michael Myers all those years ago. It’s a film prop that belongs in a museum, really, and from what we understand, this is our first peek at the legendary item in all its glory since 2003. Nevertheless, it seems Myers’ mask has been placed in good hands, as the spine-chilling prop is still in remarkably good condition.
While appearing on Michael-Myers.net (via Bloody Disgusting) to discuss the mask and its time-honored legacy, Mark Roberts recalled how he came into possession of the prop in the first place.
I have been building and running haunts for the last 26 years. About 20 years ago I got in contact with an agent who represented Dick Warlock and...

With the glut of Stephen King novels adapted into movies during the early-to-mid 1980s, it became all too easy for certain films to fall through the cracks. It was even easier, in fact, when so many of those movies were high-profile productions made by A-list directors like Stanley Kubrick, David Cronenberg, and John Carpenter. One can understand how a movie like Mark L. Lester’s Firestarter, an adaptation of King’s 1980 novel of the same name, wound up getting overlooked. I’m guilty of it myself, having seen the movie and promptly filed it with the other middle-of-the-pack Stephen King movies. Luckily, Scream Factory has a new Blu-ray that has me reconsidering my opinion and hopefully will allow other horror fans to rediscover a really cool film.

Well, I hope you guys have been saving your pennies, because there are a lot of great horror and sci-fi titles coming home on March 14th. Scream Factory is giving Firestarter the Collector’s Edition treatment this week, and both Drive-In Massacre and The Skull are being resurrected in HD as well.
If you missed them during their theatrical runs late last year, both The Love Witch and Paul Verhoeven’s award-winning thriller Elle are getting Blu-ray / DVD releases this Tuesday, and Demon Seed is making its way to Blu-ray as well (which I highly recommend watching if you haven't).
Other notable home entertainment titles for March 14th include Passengers, Z Nation Season 3, Johnny Frank Garrett’s Last Word, Stray Bullets, and The Man Who Could Cheat Death.

[Editor’s Note: Our own Scott Drebit will be hosting panels this weekend at the sixth annual Calgary Horror Con. Ahead of the three-day event, Scott caught up with the convention’s CEO and founder, Dan Doherty, to discuss what sparked his love of the genre, the convention’s origin, this year’s special guest lineup, and more.]
Dan, let’s start at the start. When did you first get into horror?
Dan Doherty: I’ve been into horror since I was a kid—I’m not sure of the exact age. For me, it was a way to test my bravery. I was bullied a bit growing up, and it was a way to test it from a safe distance. And then after a while, it just becomes an adrenaline rush; you immerse yourself in a good horror film, but there isn’t much that scares me these days other than public washrooms [laughs]. I can remember watching C.H.U.D. when I was fairly young, maybe ten, but I’m not sure if that was the first. All I know is that once I was introduced to horror, I was hooked.
That seems to be the case with pretty much everyone—once you’re in,...
