One of Hollywood's most exciting talents working today, Austin Butler has been steadily building his portfolio since working as a background actor in 2005 on the Nickelodeon shows "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide," "Unfabulous," and "Drake & Josh." Butler even appeared in an episode of "Hannah Montana" that also had Larry David. Progressing into guest and recurring roles on a variety of teenage sitcoms and dramas, the actor made an incredible turn-about going from teen idol to highly acclaimed leading man seemingly over night.
While working extensively in both film and television, Butler also received complimentary notices in the theater world, most notably as Don Parritt in "The Iceman Cometh," in a 2018 mounting of the play on Broadway with Denzel Washington. His work ethic during that play impressed the legendary actor so much Washington personally recommended Butler to Baz Luhrmann helping Butler, helping Butler land one of his most distinctive roles.

In the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "The Magnificent Ferengi", Quark (Armin Shimerman), one of the franchise's best characters, learns that his mother Ishka (Cecily Adams) has been captured by the evil Dominion. At first, Quark wants to assemble a team of crack Ferengi commandos, consisting of his brother Rom (Max Grodénchik), his nephew Nog (Aron Eisenberg), his cousin Gaila (Josh Pais), and a fighter named Lek (Hamilton Camp) to get her back, but soon comes to understand that his "crack squad" kind of sucks at military maneuvers. Comedy is one of the earliest forms of entertainment on television. Each one features strong characters who deliver punchlines that evoke laughter in the audience. Initially, television featured variety shows that provided laughs through different segments. Eventually, it evolved into sitcoms complete with laugh tracks. Comedy has continued to evolve, transforming the landscape of television in the process.
Today, comedy on television takes many forms while examining the norms of society. It can be a mockumentary, a sitcom, a surreal comedy, or even an animated show. Among the plethora of options available, certain comedy shows are worth watching at least once in a lifetime.

Few living filmmakers have a list of collaborators longer or stranger than Errol Morris: Donald Trump (in perhaps his single most revealing interview), Donald Rumsfeld, Steve Bannon, Stephen Hawking. One wonders what might’ve been learned had he had the opportunity to sit down with Charles Manson, but Morris thinks that, with “Chaos: The Manson Murders,” he’s effectively managed to communicate with the beyond-notorious cult leader across decades and mortality itself.
His film is ostensibly an adaptation of Tom O’Neill’s sensation-stirring 2019 book, but is perhaps closer to a spin or response or what resulted from jumping off one text’s ideas to form another. He tells me this over drinks at MoMA’s restaurant — he had a Campari soda; I got the house red — while “Chaos: The Manson Murders” played downstairs as the closing-night title of this year’s Doc Fortnight.

Brian James, founding guitarist and principal early songwriter for the legendary UK punk band The Damned, has died at the age of 70.
James’ passing was reported on his Facebook page, with no cause of death listed. The guitarist, who was born in London in 1955, had just turned 70 on February 18th.
Prior to The Damned, James played in the proto-punk bands London SS, The Subterraneans, and Bastard. He formed The Damned in 1976 with singer Dave Vanian, bassist Captain Sensible, and drummer Rat Scabies.
James wrote most of the songs on the band’s first two albums — Damned Damned Damned and Music for Pleasure — including “New Rose,” which is considered the first-ever UK punk single (preceding any releases by The Clash or Sex Pistols). However, he quit the band at the end of 1977, the same year both of those albums were released.

He got a loving send-off in the final weeks of his life, after his daughter Leah Hennessy announced that he was dying of cancer. The news inspired a worldwide outpouring of grief and gratitude. This man was a lifelong personality crisis, preaching his rock & roll gospel that posing and strutting and peacocking through life is not merely fun,...

On February 26, news broke that Michelle Trachtenberg, an actress who got her start as a child star in the 1990s, passed away at the age of 39. This is a gutting loss on so many levels; not only was Trachtenberg far too young, but she was a stunningly talented performer who pretty much always made a project better simply by showing up. For millennials in particular — who basically grew up with Trachtenberg's body of work — this is a gutting loss, and it's also a major loss for the entertainment industry as a whole. In fact, two millennial writers for /Film who did, in fact, grow up with Trachtenberg's body of work are helming this article, so rest easy.

The great child actress Michelle Trachtenberg died today, Feb. 26, 2025. This follows a liver transplant the actor received, along with several Instagram posts which had alarmed some friends and fans, with the images portraying an extremely gaunt Trachtenberg. As The New York Post writes, "Trachtenberg was found by her mother at around 8 a.m. Wednesday at One Columbus Place, a 51-story luxury apartment complex in Manhattan’s Central Park South neighborhood, the sources said [...] The NYPD confirmed Trachtenberg was found 'unconscious and unresponsive' by police and pronounced dead by Ems workers."

The colors of Mogwai’s volcanic explosions on the cover of The Bad Fire, the gloomy Glaswegians’ 11th record (by their count), are bright red, yellow, white, and periwinkle. Anyone who’s followed the post-rock group’s three-decade history knows, though, that Mogwai’s music burns neon blue — creating pure, clean heat but with the look of a bruise, a sense of confidence but with awareness of the damage that generates it. The title is a Scottish euphemism for Hell, but Mogwai have always favored purgatory.

David Lynch, a filmmaker who changed the actual landscape of cinema and left a legacy of masterpieces, has passed away at the age of 78. The news comes just days after the co-creator of Twin Peaks and all-around genius was evacuated from his home during the apocalyptic wildfires of Los Angeles. Born on January 20, 1946, in Missoula, Mt, the famed auteur began smoking at the eight of eight and did so for nearly 70 years. He developed serious emphysema in 2020, telling Eileen Finan of People in 2024, “In the back of every smoker’s mind is the fact that it’s unhealthy, so you’re literally playing with fire."

It’s hard to say The Boy and the Heron isn’t Hayao Miyazaki’s magnum opus. The 2024 drama film captivated audiences worldwide and earned its storied director his second Academy Award. Aside from its gorgeous visuals, Ghibli’s latest masterpiece drew in audiences with a multilayered story of human resilience and transformation. Its brightly colored fantasy settings often mask the semi-autobiographical narrative, but its jarring visions of war-torn Japan infrequently return audiences to the film’s roots. Now, it’s not an exaggeration to say The Boy and the Heron is hard to beat. It has Studio Ghibli’s outstanding visual appeal supporting the work of a master storyteller.
In a world where traditional animation is a sadly fading art, Miyazaki’s genre-blending epic stands high above many of its competitors. However, its themes and ideas are far from new. While there are few films capable of delivering them...

The world is full of underrated zombie movies that you really need to see, and when one of them was made by Jim Jarmusch and features a laundry list of Hollywood's finest actors, there's no shame in being doubly intrigued. The movie in question is none other than the 2019 horror comedy "The Dead Don't Die," which is currently seeing plenty of success on Netflix. In fact, the decidedly un-seasonal film is sitting at a very respectable third position on the streaming platform's Top 10 daily most viewed movies as of December 22, 2024 (per FlixPatrol).
In many ways, "The Dead Don't Die" is a perfect movie for the streaming age. A decidedly off-kilter film with a slow pacing and thematic choices that made it difficult for audiences and critics to swallow (as evidenced by its 54 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes), it failed to set the box office ablaze during its original theatrical run.

The Dead Don't Die is a zombie movie with a subtle, philosophical perspective that's fascinating to examine. Directed by iconic indie director Jim Jarmusch, the comedy touches upon timely social issues by exploring small-town drama during a zombie apocalypse, as police officers Cliff Robertson (Bill Murray) and Ronnie Peterson (Adam Driver) investigate the murder of two people at a Centerville diner. The initial diner murders are committed by two zombies - undead characters who are less interested in flesh and more interested in coffee, demonstrating that it's not the typical zombie film.
The Dead Don’t Die overtly foreshadows the impending apocalypse. From act to act, Driver’s Ronnie Peterson emphatically states that “it’s all going to end badly.” Murray’s Robertson tries to figure out why the end is coming, even though the writing is figuratively on the wall. Ultimately, they’re consumed by concepts that they can’t fully understand,...

Zombie movies, or films featuring some version of the walking undead, have been a staple of the horror genre since its inception, resulting in terrifying films with a chilling, underlying tension. The best zombie films pack intense stories and graphic action into the run-time, producing some of the most memorable, visceral moments in all cinema. With such a popular premise, it's easy for big-budget productions to garner all the commercial and critical success, leaving some equally intense and brilliant films to be unfairly overshadowed.
With groundbreaking shows like The Walking Dead — one of the most popular TV shows of all time — demonstrating a public thirst for zombie action, it should be no surprise that new and old zombie productions have started gaining more attention. Stellar works like Pontypool and Juan of the Dead are perfect examples of films that take the best elements of a trope, elevating some and subverting...

The actress Juno Temple is good at many things, but one of them is not — and has never been — living in the real world. “I’m fucking really not good at reality,” she’d said on a recent Friday afternoon, while taking a turn or two around Tokio7, one of New York City’s most well-loved vintage shopping establishments, and picking up items that seemed to prove her point.

[Editor’s note: This story contains spoilers for “Apartment 7A.”]
Musicals and horror have a surprisingly deeper connection than you’d imagine. After all, “Sweeney Todd” is a masterpiece about a serial killer and cannibalism; “The Phantom of the Opera” is about a disfigured madman stalking a soprano and murdering standersby. So placing “Rosemary’s Baby” prequel “Apartment 7A” within the world of ’60s Broadway makes sense beyond just central character Terry Gionoffrio’s career as a dancer.
We meet Terry (played by Victoria Vetri) in “Rosemary’s Baby” for a brief scene before her abrupt death by defenestration. Here, she’s played by Julia Garner as an ambitious counterpart to John Cassavetes’ eager actor, Guy, in Roman Polanski’s film. Sidetracked by a career-threatening injury and taken in by those insidious old devil worshippers the Castavets, Terry finds her life — and career — on the upswing. So what if it takes a little tannis root to get cast in a Broadway musical?...

Morrissey claims he has been “gagged” over the release of his album Bonfire of the Teenagers, which he recorded between 2020 and 2021. In a rare interview with The Telegraph, the musician said that “idiot culture” is preventing the LP from coming out.
The unreleased album has been controversial because the title references the Manchester Arena bombing, which took place during Ariana Grande’s concert in 2017. The tragic incident resulted in 22 deaths and galvanized the city of Manchester, who claimed Oasis’ song “Don’t Look Back in Anger” as their anthem.

Sometimes a movie can be a best horror movie you never saw candidate but there are other instances where a movie has been seen and talked about but altogether lost to time. Richard Stanley has had a long career in terms of time he has been active but a very small amount of output in terms of actual number of projects. While the saga of his journey to direct the big budget remake of The Island of Doctor Moreau and subsequent firing has been widely captured in the documentary Lost Soul and his latest success with The Color Out of Space was highly regarded but tinged with controversial allegations, he had a couple of gems before all that. Dust Devil, his sophomore effort, still very much so belongs in the Best Horror You Never Saw category and I will get to that one too, but Hardware (pick up a copy...

I’m somewhat bewildered over how outraged people have been over the new version of The Crow (don’t call it a remake!). Many are calling it a stain on the legacy of the late, great Brandon Lee, who infamously was killed in an on-set tragedy, but by examining the franchise as a whole, it’s clear that as far as these things go, the franchise has been exploited to death. There have been no less than five Crow movies at this point, and guess what? We’re going to rank them all! That said, as far as our Crow movies ranked list goes, they’re all varying degrees of bad outside the first movie and the new version, which isn’t half bad.
Dishonourable Mention: The Crow: Stairway to Heaven

You can’t keep “The Crow” down. That’s kind of its whole thing. Naturally, the concept of the wronged dead who return from their grave seeking vengeance — inspired by James O’Barr’s comics of the same name — has sprung forth a franchise, which spans five total films since Alex Proyas’ iconic, stylish film debuted in 1994. The original film remains a heartbreaking watch after the tragic on-set death of star Brandon Lee, but it also holds up as a stunning, massively influential goth rock urban fantasy — not to mention an early comic book adaptation.
The rest of the “The Crow” movies? Well, they’re not quite so enduring, despite a steady stream of familiar faces in the casts, including Kirsten Dunst, Edward Furlong, Mia Kirschner, Fred Ward, David Boreanaz and now, Bill Skarsgard and FKA Twigs in the long-awaited remake.

Ozzy Osbourne isn’t mincing words when it comes to rock stars who dabble in acting, or the other way around. At 75, the legendary Black Sabbath frontman had some pointed comments for Johnny Depp and other performers who seem undecided about their careers, during an episode of his SiriusXM podcast “Ozzy Speaks.“
Furthermore, with rumors circulating about a potential biopic focusing on his relationship with wife Sharon Osbourne, fans shouldn’t anticipate a high–profile actor taking on the role of the Prince of Darkness. In a conversation with Consequence of Sound, Osbourne expressed his preference for an “unknown“ actor over “anyone like Johnny Depp“ to portray him.
Variety initially broke the news in 2021 about a film centered on the Osbournes. According to the report, the movie is set to be produced by Sony Pictures and Polygram Entertainment, featuring a screenplay penned by Lee Hall, known for his work on Rocketman.

Having seen ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ I can say bringing Sam Raimi into the MCU fold was an excellent choice, especially given the source material. Fourteen years in, the MCU and larger superhero genre have begun to feel stale. So bringing in a director who can offer an auteur approach to one of the franchise’s films is a fresh change of stylistic pace. ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ kept me on the edge of my seat and with a pit in my stomach far more than the average Marvel flick. But this is not the first time Raimi has worked with Marvel, nor helmed a wildly successful superhero film. Many MCU fans my age likely started their journey into Marvel movies with 2002’s ‘Spider-Man,’ also directed by the filmmaker, and now all MCU fans have been loosely associated with the picture, as that film...

With the release of films like Mad God and The Spine of Night (not to mention a poignant reminder by Guillermo del Toro at the 95th Academy Awards ceremony), it seems like Western audiences are one step closer to catching up with the rest of the world in realizing that animation is more than capable of telling complex, adult-oriented stories.
However, this doesn’t mean that older animated films avoided mature themes and experimental narratives – it’s just that many of these movies turned out to be huge flops, with the very best of them destined to become cult classics decades after they underperformed at the box-office. And when it comes to animated flops, there are few films more remarkable than Clive A. Smith’s beautiful disaster, 1983’s Rock & Rule. An unprecedented financial failure, this oddball rock opera would go on to entertain fans of weird cinema for decades...

The Boys' Tomer Capone recently addressed Frenchie's sexuality and Season 4 romance, which revealed a new aspect of the character the actor loves. In the current season of the hit Amazon Prime Video series, Frenchie has a romantic relationship with Colin Hauser, marking his first on-screen relationship with a man on the show.
In an interview with Variety, the actor explained how he manifested the arc for Frenchie and Colin, inspiring The Boys' showrunner Eric Kripke and the writers to devise the romantic storyline. "When I started with Frenchie, in terms of me assembling character and kind of puzzling who this guy is, I had a lot of inspiration for some reason from artists like Serge Gainsbourg, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Mick Jagger," he said. "If you think about it, all those people have a sexuality that is not black or white. It's somewhere in between. They're so beautiful for being what they are.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains major spoilers from Episode 5 of “The Boys” Season 4, currently streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video.
Halfway through “The Boys” Season 4, things are looking grim for our untraditional heroes, as Frenchie (Tomer Capone) leaves The Boys to turn himself in for all the murders he committed prior to his time working with Butcher (Karl Urban), Hughie (Jack Quaid), Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso) and now Annie/Starlight (Erin Moriarty).
The decades of guilt over those deaths, including the blood on his hands from previously killing the family of his new love interest Colin (Elliot Knight) when Colin was younger, drove Frenchie to a drug-induced mental breakdown and subsequent confession at a jail at the end of the episode.
But with The Boys investigating the supe virus and Homelander’s (Antony Starr) continued fight against humanity, why did Frenchie decide now was the time to go to jail,...
