Hacks will makes its return for its fourth season April 10. In the trailer, released Tuesday, tensions run high between Jean Smart’s seasoned comic Deborah Vance and Hannah Einbinder’s comedy writer Ava. The friction is palpable as Deborah and Ava walk down a corridor in the trailer in their (spoiler alert!) new roles: Deborah is a late-night talk show host, and Ava is the head writer on the show.
“Aren’t you a big brave girl?” Deborah says in the trailer.
“I guess I am,” Ava quips.

Hacks is back — and earlier than ever before. Season 4 of the Emmy-winning comedy will premiere with two episodes on April 10 at 9 p.m. Et/Pt, Max announced Tuesday, along with a trailer.
The rest of the 10-episode season will roll out with a single episode on Thursdays for four weeks, then Episodes 7 and 8 on May 15, Episode 9 on May 22, and the season finale on May 29 — right before the May 31 Emmy eligibility deadline. Season 4 will pick up in the aftermath of Ava (Hannah Einbinder) blackmailing Deborah (Jean Smart) to get the head writer job at the latter's new late-night show in the Season 3 finale. "Tensions rise as Deborah and Ava endeavor to get their late night show off the ground and make history doing it," reads the logline.

And just like that, Season 4 of “Hacks” is already here.

“Hacks” Season 4 is picking up right where Season 3 left off: with Deborah and Ava on the edge of war. The latest installment of the Emmy-winning Max original comedy will premiere with its first two episodes on April 10.
“Well aren’t you a big, brave girl,” Deborah (Jean Smart) menacingly says in the new trailer out Tuesday, rounding on her prodigy.
“I guess I am,” Ava (Hannah Einbinder) replies. “It’s for the best.”
The clip then cuts between several high-energy scenes, from Deborah dancing in a club to both Deborah and Ava driving literal race cars. Kaitlin Olson’s very pregnant DJ can even be seen briefly weightlifting.
“Blackmail on day one? Not good!” Deborah and Ava’s manager Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) yells. “She’s been doing this for 50 years. You’re not going to beat her at her own game. Nobody beats Deborah.” Maybe, not yet.

Oh, it’s on between Deborah and Ava.
In the trailer for season 4 of Hacks, which returns April 10 to Max, Jean Smart’s alter-ego mutters sarcastically “well, aren’t you a big brave girl” now that her former writer (Hannah Einbinder) is now running Deborah’s new late-night talk show.
But the days of hugs and kisses are gone; the two are at each other’s throats, with Deborah watching Ava hit the ground in a failed trust fall, and the two going mano e mano in race cars.
The 10-episode season of the Emmy-winning comedy debuts with two episodes, then one episode a week for four weeks. Episodes seven and eight debut together on May 15, followed by episode nine on May 22. The season finale debuts on May 29.
For the new season, Hacks has lured Hacks Julianne Nicholson, Michaela Watkins, Bresha Webb, Robby Hoffman, and Eric Balfour for guest starring roles.

Hacks is beefing up the ranks before its imminent return. The Emmy-winning Max comedy announced Tuesday the addition of 13 new guest stars planned for the fourth season — including those populating the writers room on Deborah Vance’s (Jean Smart) new late-night talk show.
Toplining the new faces are Julianne Nicholson, Michaela Watkins, Bresha Webb, Robby Hoffman and Eric Balfour, while Danny Jolles, Gavin Matts, Grover Whitmore, III, Holmes, Jasmine Ashanti, Katy Sullivan, Matt Oberg and Sandy Honig will guest as the Deborah’s new writers — all of whom will presumably report to Hannah Einbinder’s Ava.
In the season three finale, Ava blackmailed Deborah into giving her the head writer gig on her new show. The season four logline doesn’t give much, saying only “tensions rise as Deborah and Ava endeavor to get their late night show off the ground and make history doing it.” Tensions indeed…

Ahead of a busy weekend on the awards circuit — the Critics Choice Awards, the PGA Awards, the DGA Awards — a veritable Hollywood who’s-who gathered on Thursday to celebrate the American Film Institute’s 10 finest films and television shows of 2024 in a luncheon event rescheduled from a month due to the devastating series of fires that ravaged the Los Angeles area.
And while there were quiet murmurings here and there about Emilia Pérez and the controversy enveloping its star Karla Sofia Gascón, the film was received with warm applause, if not an overabundance of enthusiasm, when it came time to play a clip. The movie was represented at the lunch by director Jacques Audiard, stars Zoe Saldaña, Edgar Ramirez, and Adriana Paz, and composers/songwriters Clément Ducol and Camille. Gascón, unsurprisingly, was a no-show, reportedly holed up in her native Spain after being sidelined by Netflix.

Thousands of Los Angeles families lost their homes, valuable possessions and priceless mementos this week. Also gone in the devastating wildfires are pieces of Hollywood history, with a number of historic houses used in iconic movies and TV series threatened or destroyed. That includes the Altadena mansion seen on Max’s award-winning comedy series Hacks.
According to an eyewitness, the 1915 Spanish Colonial Revival mansion has burnt down in the Eaton fire, with only its facade still standing.
There is major concern for the nearby Crank house where Matilda, Scream 2, and Catch Me If You Can were filmed, the house Step Brothers was shot as well as the famed Rubio Street, which includes one of the most heavily used mansions in movies and TV series such as Risky Business and This Is Us.

Hacks' Deborah Vance has a lot of wild Christmas traditions, which the show leans into for big laughs. Played by Jean Smart, Deborah is all about loud luxury. Deborah's mansion in Las Vegas is a shrine to the career she built over decades, and she has made it her perfect place to host her annual Christmas party. In season 3 of Hacks, Deborah's writer-protégé Ava Daniels gets a firsthand experience of just how much Deborah loves the holiday season. The Hacks main character Deborah never does anything halfway, and Christmas is no exception.
By the ending of Hacks season 3, Deborah's penchant for getting her way is established, and Christmas is no different. Deborah has many annual traditions, including preparing the house in the lead-up to the party. Christmas brings out Deborah's generous nature, with gifts aplenty for her guests. However, she is still Deborah, so she can never be too nice.

[This story contains spoilers from the season three premiere of Sex Lives of College Girls, “Welcome Back to Essex.”]
Sex Lives of College Girls picked up right at the start of the school year when it returned with season three, similar to how season one began. But this year, the girls are now sophomores.
Over the summer, Leighton (Reneé Rapp) and Alicia (Midori Francis) traveled across Europe with Leighton’s dad, Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) worked, Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) was in Washington D.C., with her senator mother (played by Sherri Shepherd), and Bela (Amrit Kaur) and Leighton visited Whitney and even had dinner with Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff.
When season three picks up, Kimberly and Whitney are still at odds, not having spoken all summer because Kimberly lied to Whitney about kissing her ex, Canaan (Christopher Meyer), at the end of last year. And Bela’s efforts to transfer out of Essex College after hitting rock bottom are thwarted when a counselor, played by Rose Abdoo, tells...

Spoilers ahead for Hacks season 3, episode 2, "Better Late."
The Carrot Top cameo in Hacks season 3 is a clever callback to season 2, adding depth to Deborah's prank. Deborah's prank on Carrot Top reflects her complex relationship with DJ, as she shows her love for her daughter in her own way. Hacks season 3 should further explore Deborah and DJ's strained-yet-poignant bond.
In Hacks season 3, episode 2, legendary comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) realizes she doesn't have any new material in her Rolodex of jokes that's late-night show worthy. Instead, she decides to make a story that's worthy of her highly anticipated guest appearance by pulling a prank on fellow Las Vegas-based comedian Carrot Top. Known for his self-deprecation, prop comedy, and satire, the stand-up comedian hit it big in the '90s, which led to his 2005 residency at Las Vegas' Luxor Hotel. But Carrot Top's celebrity cameo in Hacks season 3 is more than funny.

While the idea of comedy on television has been warped by the Emmys, some shows can deliver the joke factories that once littered the TV landscape. Three-camera sitcoms may be out of vogue, but Hacks takes the best bits of those shows and applies them to a single-camera setup. Hacks shines as the best of both worlds with withering jokes and incredible performances. It’s among the most poignant and topical shows of the moment while laying track that will allow it to hold up in the decades to come. It does not hurt that Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are two of the funniest people on television.

Now, after months apart, they’re both at different places in their careers – with the success of her special, Deborah is back on top, while Ava has enough self-respect to demand that Deborah not make fun of her appearance (yeah right) – and they’re going to try to take advantage of their momentum. “Anything I want to do, I have to do them now,” Deborah tells Ava. Gerri is heading West.
J. Smith-Cameron, the actress best known for her two-time Emmy-nominated performance as acid-tongued general counsel Gerri Kellman on “Succession,” is joining the cast of “Hacks” Season 3 as a recurring guest star, Variety reports.
