A new Resident Evil movie is coming to theaters in 2026 with filmmaker Zach Cregger at the helm. While there's still a lot about the movie that's not yet known, a new report may have revealed the basic plot.
According to film industry insider Daniel Richtman, the upcoming ResidentEvil reboot will follow a "hapless courier tasked with delivering a package to a remote hospital. He finds himself caught in the middle of an outbreak and must fight through hordes of mutated creatures to survive." If accurate, this report would suggest that the film will feature an original story, as that's not the plot of any of the Resident Evil games.
It was recently reported that Austin Abrams (The Walking Dead) was being eyed to star in the lead role. Richtman reported that Abrams' character name is listed as "Bryan," but it's possible that this could be a code name meant to...

The highly-anticipated reboot of Resident Evil from Barbarian director Zach Cregger may have its lead actor, and he's already well-versed in the realm of zombies and horror. Deadline reports that Austin Abrams is in early talks to join the Resident Evil cast. No word on what role he'll be playing, if it will be an established character in the franchise or a new invention from Cregger and co-screenwriter Shay Hatten.
In addition to appearing in Wolfs with Brad Pitt and George Clooney and starring in Euphoria as Ethan Lewis, Abrams played Ron Anderson in nine episodes of The Walking Dead's fifth and sixth seasons. The complex young character became an antagonist for Rick Grimes and his gang during their time in the Alexandria Safe Zone. Abrams also appeared in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, so his horror credits are already robust.

Image Source: Sony Pictures In 2020, as the world faced unprecedented challenges, Milla Jovovich found herself battling towering beasts and fighting for survival in Monster Hunter. The project was written and directed by her husband, Paul W.S. Anderson, the filmmaker behind the hugely popular Resident Evil films, in which Jovovich also starred. As a filmmaker who has already tried his hand at adapting video games into films, Anderson was the right man to bring the ambitious adaptation of the Monster Hunter video game to life. The film follows the story of Captain Artemis, a formidable commander of an elite military task force. Things take a turn for the worse when they are abruptly transported to a cruel and unfamiliar realm, overrun by gigantic and terrifying beasts. Artemis and her team must rely on their skills and resourcefulness to battle for their lives. Though it was loaded with action and stunning visual effects,...

A fresh rumor about the upcoming ‘Resident Evil’ film has popped up, and it’s got us curious. Word is, this flick will toss a regular courier into a nightmare he didn’t sign up for. Imagine a guy just trying to drop off a package at some out-of-the-way hospital, only to stumble into a full-blown outbreak. That’s the what we’re hearing about, and it sounds like a tense setup.
This poor courier doesn’t get a break. He’s got to slug it out with waves of twisted, mutated creatures to make it out alive. It’s a gritty survival story that feels like it could lean hard into the horror roots of the franchise. Think dark hallways, creepy vibes, and monsters that make you glad it’s just a movie.

Big news might be brewing for the next ‘Resident Evil’ film. Word on the street is that Austin Abrams, a familiar face from ‘Euphoria’ and ‘Wolfs,’ is chatting with Sony about taking the starring role in their upcoming reboot. This juicy tidbit comes from industry insider DanielRPK, but it’s still just a rumor, so we’re keeping our excitement in check for now.
Zach Cregger, the guy who creeped us out with ‘Barbarian,’ is steering this new take on the zombie-filled franchise. Sony snagged the project after a heated bidding war, and they’ve already locked in a release date—September 18, 2026.
Cregger’s not just directing; he’s also co-writing the script with Shay Hatten, known for action-packed stuff like ‘John Wick: Chapter 3.’ The plan is to bring the series back to its horror roots, leaning into what made the original Capcom video games so spooky.

Looking for what to see in theaters? Our feature, updated weekly, highlights our top recommendations for films currently in theaters, from new releases to restorations receiving a proper theatrical run.
While we already provide extensive monthly new-release recommendations and weekly streaming recommendations, as distributors’ roll-outs can vary, this is a one-stop list to share the essential films that may be on a screen near you.

If a James Bond or Mission: Impossible film excised all its action scenes––save a stray explosion or gunshot––while employing a script with a pop John le Carré sensibility, it might resemble something like Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag. Few director/actor duos have been operating for as long as Paul W.S. Anderson and his favourite muse (and wife), Milla Jovovich. Over the last two decades, we’ve seen Jovovich fight all manner of fiends and creatures under Anderson’s direction in movies like Resident Evil and Monster Hunter. In The Lost Lands, featuring the actor as all-powerful witch Alys, sticks to that formula, offering up an ample amount of both beastly and human foes to slay. But the eyesore visuals and lacklustre plot turn what should be breezy fun into a frustrating bore.
Anderson has been known to mix the digital with the practical in the past, but In The Lost Lands sees him at his most artificial. The post-apocalyptic dystopia he and regular cinematographer Glen MacPherson conjure seems to be aiming for Zack Snyder-esque desaturation but winds up closer to poorly rendered video-game territory, with lighting that feels anything but real.

If you're a huge fan of wasting your time and money, there's historically not a surer way to maximize the squandering of both than strolling down to your local multiplex and paying full admission to watch a movie based on a video game. With astonishingly few exceptions, video games have proved stubbornly resistant to film adaptation. There are numerous reasons for this, but the one hurdle that most filmmakers seem incapable of clearing is that watching a game isn't nearly as fun as playing one. Sounds crazy, but I really think there's something to it!
With this in mind, studios have trouble entrusting their would-be video game movie franchises to top flight directors. "Werewolves Within" is an outlier on account of being an indie film adaptation of a game that wasn't widely known outside of hardcore gaming circles, which allowed director Josh Ruben and screenwriter Mishna Wolff to basically do their own thing.

The video game adaptation genre is one Milla Jovovich is plenty familiar with, and one of her movies is now climbing the streaming charts. After some smaller roles in the late '80s, Jovovich first rose to stardom with her turn as Leeloo in Luc Besson's The Fifth Element. The years since have seen her star in everything from Spike Lee's He Got Gameto Ben Stiller's Zoolander and its sequel, as well as David Harbour's Hellboy reboot.
Her most notable project to date, however, remains that of the Resident Evil movie franchise, an adaptation of Capcom's survival horror video game series of the same name. Partnered with her husband, writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson, Jovovich carried the role of heroine Alice through six movies, while also having starred in Anderson's adaptations of The Three Musketeers and George R.R. Martin's In the Lost Lands. In response to the Covid pandemic, Warner Bros. gave all of their 2021 films day-and-date theatrical and Max streaming releases – and one movie that really benefited from the streaming side of that strategy was the video game adaptation Mortal Kombat, released in April of 2021. As reported by Business Insider, Mortal Kombat had the best weekend of any of the Warner Bros. releases on Max, with a total of 3.8 million viewers during its first few days. In addition to that, the film, which cost $55 million to make, earned $83.6 million at the global box office. So, within months of its release, Warner Bros. was already developing sequels and spinoffs. The first follow-up will be making its way into theatres sometime in 2025 – and here’s everything we know about Mortal Kombat 2.

Actor Milla Jovovich saw her breakthrough role in 1997, when she played Leeloo in The Fifth Element. Jovovich had taken on supporting roles in movies such as Chaplin and Dazed and Confused, but her bigger role in The Fifth Element made Hollywood aware of who she was. The sci-fi movie was also significant in her life in that it brought together her and director Luc Besson. Besson and Jovovich entered a relationship and married in 1997.
However, Jovovich and Besson's romantic bond was not long for this world. While the pair would go on to make another movie together, The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc, in 1999, their marriage ended up falling apart. Besson and Jovovich got divorced in 1999, after only two years of marriage. Now, the actor has been married to director Paul W.S. Anderson, who she also met on a set, since 2009. Milla Jovovich recalls how "demoralizing" it was to be a child actor in Hollywood and how this defined her Dazed and Confused role. Jovovich's acting career dates back to the late '80s and early '90s, with roles in projects like Paradise, Married...with Children, Return to the Blue Lagoon (1991), and Chaplin (1992). Released in 1993, Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused features a cast stacked with an impressive array of actors, many of whom would go on to become major stars. Jovovich appears in the film as Michelle Burroughs, who plays a guitar at a fire in one memorable sequence.

Dave Bautista said his In the Lost Lands character is inspired by Clint Eastwood’s Westerns. Eastwood starred in a handful of genre films before the Dollars Trilogy, where he played his career's most iconic role.
In the Lost Lands cast Dave Bautista in a uniquely familiar role. He plays Boyce, a hunter who joins a witch in her search for a magical gift that would transform their queen to a werewolf. That premise screams adventure fantasy, but Bautista’s character has all the earmarks of a Spaghetti Western cowboy. The actor confirmed this with DiscussingFilm, describing the movie as a “Western stuck in a fantasy world”. He knew he was onboard after reading the opening narration. “I’d been looking to play a cowboy, and all day long I was just thinking ‘Clint Eastwood, what would Clint Eastwood do?’” he explained.

“In the Lost Lands” director Paul W.S. Anderson is used to his movies getting released, being under-appreciated and then finding their audience years — or sometimes decades — later.
“I’m British, we are used to considering ourselves being rubbish,” Anderson said. But he is aware that even movies considered flops do sometimes come back in a big way. “You release the movie and no one likes it and then 10 years later they go, ‘That was a great movie.’ Could you not have told me that 10 years ago?” he added.
Anderson started his career in England. He made the low-budget thriller “Shopping” in 1994 which starred a then-unknown Jude Law. The British press was ruthless. Anderson still remembers that one outlet branded the film “a reckless orgy of destruction.” “That was supposed to be a criticism and I loved it so much that we stuck it on the poster,” Anderson said. It was a source of pride.

George R.R. Martin has experience with adaptations. The author watched as HBO adapted his Song of Ice and Fire books for TV as Game of Thrones, contributing a few scripts along the way. HBO is currently in the midst of adapting his book Fire & Blood for the small screen as House of the Dragon. There have been some bumps in that road; after the second season aired, Martin aired out some of his issues with how the show was adapting his book, and the resulting fracas was big enough for HBO to release a statement to calm things down.
And now, Martin is out promoting In The Lost Lands, a new movie based on his short story of the same name. Speaking to Collider alongside the Milla Jovovich and Paul W. S. Anderson, who starred in and directed the movie, Martin admitted that he's gotten "in trouble" for talking about adaptations in the past.

Paul W.S. Anderson might not feel like the most obvious choice to adapt a George R.R. Martin story, but he says he has taken direct inspiration from the author’s source story in achieving the vision for In the Lost Lands. And yes, it involves a lot of blue screen.
Anderson recently chatted with Variety to discuss how he sought to achieve a vision that doesn’t only respect Martin but creates an environment that doesn’t rely on the author’s most famous work, the Game of Thrones series. “It entirely came out of George’s story, really. A new report suggests that the director of theResident Evil reboot will be paid handsomely for his work on the new film. The movie's theatrical release date is planned for late 2026.
Per Screen Rant, Hollywood insider Matthew Belloni claims that Sony Pictures will reportedly pay the Resident Evil reboot director, Zach Cregger, $20 million for writing, directing and producing. The salary is on top of Cregger's 20 backend points, which give him a share of the film's box office. Belloni also notes that Cregger's backend share is "non-reducible" with no option on sequels.
Last week, it was confirmed that Sony had won the bidding war for the rights to the Resident Evil franchise. The film's Sept. 18, 2026, release date was quickly announced. With box office totals of over $1.2 billion worldwide, Resident Evil is one of the highest-grossing video game film franchises, and it appears that Sony is willing to pay the film's director accordingly.

Science fiction films are a staple of modern Hollywood's slate of blockbusters, with franchises that feature space-faring adventure, futuristic technology and other-worldly creatures being some of the highest-grossing movies of the last few decades. Science fiction movies also have a long history in Hollywood, dating all the way back to the classic films of Geroge Mellies like A Trip to the Moon.
But many science fiction films do not stand the test of time, or fail to meet the expectations of audiences on release, as evidenced by Roger Ebert's scathing reviews of many of the films he had to see in that genre. The worst that science fiction movies have to offer throw away the genre's roots in telling tales about deep themes, replacing human stories with cheap thrills.

It was a rough weekend at the box office. A slew of smaller releases tried to drum up some business as Warner Bros. finally unveiled director Bong Joon Ho's "Mickey 17," which disappointed greatly with a $19 million debut. That was still good enough to top the charts, which says a lot about just how poorly the weekend went. To further illustrate just how bad it was, another flop sort of flew under the radar in the form of "In the Lost Lands." One would be forgiven for not knowing this movie even exists but, nonetheless, its investors are undoubtedly unhappy.
Based on "Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin's short story of the same name, "In the Lost Lands" opened to just over $1 million on 1,370 screens. That made for a truly lousy $761 per-screen average. This one is Doa, despite having an awful lot of talent involved. To make matters worse,...

Put bluntly, it was a very disappointing weekend at the box office. 2025 has not gotten off to the greatest start, with even Marvel's "Captain America: Brave New World" only doing okay in theaters, as opposed to the massive windfalls we'd come to expect from these movies in years past. Save for the unexpected $2 billion Chinese blockbuster "Ne Zha 2," it's been tough sledding. In keeping with that sentiment, director Bong Joon Ho's long-awaited sci-fi flick "Mickey 17" hit theaters this past weekend with disappointing results.
The good news for Warner Bros. is that "Mickey 17," which stars Robert Pattinson ("The Batman"), topped the charts domestically with $19 million. It led a weekend with very little new competition, save for Paul W.S. Anderson's fantasy epic "In the Lost Lands," which barely managed $1 million in its debut. Overall, the domestic box office for the weekend totaled just over $53 million. That's bad,...

Resident Evilstar Milla Jovovich recently reflected on how she landed her iconic role as Alice in the first feature film adaptation of the fan-favorite survival horror video game franchise. A self-professed fan, the actor, whose career was on an upward trajectory at the time, originally wanted to produce the 2002 movie.
However, Jovovich was asked to read for the role of Alice by Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson, who she went on to marry. "I played the video game a lot with my little brother, and I wanted to produce it. I wanted to make the movie," Jovovich told GQ about a role that turned her into an action movie icon. "And then I found out that my - well, he wasn't my husband then - but this guy had the rights to it."

A good portion of Paul W.S. Anderson’s filmmaking career has consisted of video game adaptations, with his writing and/or directing credits including Mortal Kombat (1995), Monster Hunter, and six Resident Evil movies. Next up for him is a film version of the Sega game The House of the Dead. Originally released in 1997, The House of the Dead spawned a franchise that includes several sequels and spin-offs, as well as a remake. Uwe Boll directed a film adaptation back in 2003, and that received a sequel in 2005 that was directed by Michael Hurst. Now, Anderson is plotting an adaptation that he promises will be “very, very scary.”

We had learned this past Halloween season that Paul W.S Anderson (Event Horizon, Alien vs. Predator, Resident Evil film franchise, Monster Hunter, In the Lost Lands) is returning to the horror genre with an upcoming movie adaptation of the video game The House of the Dead, which will be coming along over 20 years after Uwe Boll’s infamous adaptation.
Paul W.S Anderson will write and direct the new adaptation of Sega’s zombie game, which debuted back in 1996 and spawned a franchise as well as a remake in 2022. In a new chat with Variety this week, Anderson details his “very, very scary” vision for the upcoming movie.
“It’s going to be immersive and very, very scary,” Paul W.S. Anderson promises. “It’ll all play out in real time, so it reflects the experience of playing the video game. The only time it stops is when you beat the game or you die.

Fans of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon have another exciting show to look forward to! The upcoming HBO series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, is already preparing for a second season—even before the first has aired.
This new Game of Thrones prequel is based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. The first season, set to release in late 2025, will consist of six episodes and take place nearly a century before Game of Thrones. It follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (played by Peter Claffey) and his young squire, Egg (played by Dexter Sol Ansell), who will later become King Aegon V.
Unlike previous series filled with dragons and massive battles, this story focuses more on personal journeys, chivalry, and political intrigue.

If there's anyone who knows how to bring a video game to life on the big screen, it's director Paul W.S. Anderson. Not only has he helmed six Resident Evil movies over the course of his career, but he also directed 1995's Mortal Kombat, and 2020's Monster Hunter, which was based on the popular series of games by Capcom. Now he's at it again with a new adaptation of House of the Dead, which he says is going to be something very "different" for him.
Speaking with Variety to promote his latest release, In the Lost Lands, Anderson touched a little on House of the Dead, which is the third adaptation of the action horror game franchise following Uwe Boll's 2003 version, and the direct-to-dvd sequel helmed by Michael Hurst in 2006. Milla Jovovich tells us about her new action adventure, In The Lost Lands, adapting George Rr Martin, and giving the middle finger to critics.
Against a parched landscape, two figures emerge from the shimmering haze. One is a grizzled bounty hunter; the other a mysterious woman with a dark past. Neither quite trusts the other, but they’re united by a potentially deadly mission in hostile territory. Oh, and the bounty hunter has a pet snake with two heads. And the mysterious woman’s a witch.
This is In The Lost Lands, the latest movie from director and co-writer Paul Ws Anderson and Milla Jovovich – actor, action star, and Anderson’s long-time wife. Like their earlier movies together – most notably the run of Resident Evil films they made between 2002 and 2016 – it’s a true collision of genres. Spaghetti western meets post-apocalyptic horror; dark fantasy rubs up against two-fisted, pistol-firing Hong Kong action.

The next Resident Evil film is coming in September 2026 it’s now been confirmed, with Zach Cregger directing. More here.
Ever since Barbarian released in 2022 and announced director Zach Cregger as a bold new name in the horror genre, we’ve been waiting patiently for his next film.
That next film is still set to be Weapons, a horror ‘opus’. But it now sounds as though we might well be getting two films from Cregger in the same year, with news emerging that his spin on the survival horror videogame series Resident Evil will release in September of 2026.
It was last September that we first covered reports that Cregger had signed up to tackle Resident Evil, with Sony backing the project after the filmmaker declined to continue developing a remake of Clue with the studio. That agreement is now official, with Sony even publicly dating the film, per Deadline.

After exploring so many different genres over the course of his prolific career, filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson finally decided to tackle the fantasy genre and it seems that his approach was as action-packed as you’d expect from the guy who brought you Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, and other similar movies.
Reuniting with Milla Jovovich and joined by MCU alumn Dave Bautista, Anderson managed to craft a visually intriguing movie with two strong performances and he recently talked about the whole filmmaking process in a very intriguing interview.

If you were waiting for the dam to break at the box office, allowing a torrent of dollars to flood a sleepy post-Oscars weekend, prepare to get caught in an undertow of disappointment. After a brief delay, acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho returned to theaters this weekend with Mickey 17, a quirky sci-fi epic starring Robert Pattinson that, despite its stumble during its box office debut, dethroned Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World after three weeks at the top of the charts. While Bong Joon Ho’s Snowpiercer, Okja, and the Best Picture-winning film Parasite are beloved cinematic treats, Mickey 17 only managed $19.1 million in ticket sales during its opening weekend.
Ho’s previous film, Parasite, earned $376,264 during its U.S. theater debut, making its $125,421 per-theater average a 2019 record-setter. At the time of its release, Ho’s unsettling social thriller managed the best per-screen haul since La La Land,...

Dave Bautista was introduced to most moviegoers as Drax, the brutal but kind-hearted warrior of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise. In the decade since, he’s taken his share of tough guy roles, in the 007 entry “Spectre” and the “Dune” franchise, but the 56-year-old actor has also developed his tender side with standout dramatic turns, playing a teacher with visions of the apocalypse in “Knock at the Cabin” and an insecure incel influencer in “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”
Now starring in director Paul W.S. Anderson’s post-apocalyptic feudal Western “In the Lost Lands,” Bautista shines as a more old-fashioned hero: a royal-employed gun-slinger in the distrustful, lonely mold of spaghetti Western rough riders. For the actor, the role was worth relishing.

Paul W.S. Anderson’s latest film In The Lost Lands is an adaptation of a George R.R. Martin short story. Dave Bautista plays Boyce, a drifter whose knowledge of the dangers hidden within the Lost Lands is critical to helping Gray Alys (Milla Jovovivch) on her quest for magical power.
Grae Drake sits down with Dave to discuss his ever-growing filmography, and whether or not he looks back at what he’s done. He talks about what he thinks his future in acting is, and why he feels audiences are invested in his journey. He reveals the motivating force behind his work, and what he’s trying to prove at every turn.

Milla Jovovich not only plays Gray Alys in Paul W.S. Anderson’s latest film In The Lost Lands, but lands her first official producing credit, despite Paul's assertion that she’s always produced their projects. Together they decide what their favorite collaboration has been in their extensive body of work (which they adorably disagree on). Paul W.S. Anderson tells Grae Drake how much care went into building the look of this visually groundbreaking film that he calls “an adult fairy tale."
In The Lost Lands chronicles Gray Alys (Milla Jovovich), a powerful and feared sorceress, and her journey into the ghostly wilderness in search of a magical power. Her guide Boyce (Dave Bautista) must help her outwit and outfight both man and demon.

In The Lost Lands is out now in theaters, introducing viewers to the witch Gray Alys, a conjurer created by none other than A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin himself. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, In The Lost Lands adapts a 1982 short story written by Martin for the big screen. It stars Milla Jovovich as Alys, a witch who can give you anything you want — though you'll probably wish she hadn't when all is said and done. When she's approached by a queen who wants the power to turn into a werewolf, Alys sets off into the titular Lost Lands with the help of a guide and hunter named Boyce (Dave Bautista) to track it down.

“I love fairytales. I love the Hans Christian Andersen version of ‘The Little Mermaid’ where she dies at the end.”
Even with his adoration though, it’s taken Paul W.S. Anderson more than three decades to make a fantasy feature. The cult filmmaker has ventured into just about every other genre — often juggling a few at once, as with the zombie action and corporate dystopia of the “Resident Evil” series, or the occult horror and space exploration of “Event Horizon.” But a medieval story of knaves and nymphs had eluded him until his new feature “In the Lost Lands,” an adaptation of a George R.R. You would think an action-adventure fantasy movie starring two of the genres' more charismatic and accomplished stars from a short story by a beloved scribe would lead to a solid result. Sadly, In the Lost Lands is lesser than the sum of its parts. What exactly is missing though? Or didn't go right? As is often the case with movies, it's not entirely clear and we'd have to theorize, but the finished dish leaves much to be desired regardless of its enticing ingredients. First, some context.

George R.R. Martin is undoubtedly one of the best-known contemporary authors today when it comes to having his work adapted. He's far from the only one, but Game of Thrones kicked off a huge revival of interest in fantasy while becoming one of the most successful fantasy TV shows in history. Of course, when it comes to adapting books into movies or TV shows, the end results often run the gamut in terms of quality and loyalty to the source material. In a conversation hosted by Blancpain with Martin, Milla Jovovich, and Paul W.S. Anderson about the new film In the Lost Lands, Collider spoke with Martin about the complexities of an adaptation and what it feels like, as the author, to see an adaptation get made.
