This Forgotten Horror-Western from the ‘You’re Next’ Writer is Quietly Haunting Prime Video
Image
The juxtaposition of the horror and Western genres is an unusual one, for sure. But there’s something rather enjoyable about seeing the two seemingly opposed genres skillfully fused. Organ Trail and Bone Tomahawk are just a couple of examples of the kind of magic that stems from the effective use of this unholy union. We recently noticed that a forgotten horror Western is streaming on Prime Video and that’s the kind of good news we cannot keep to ourselves. The film we’re referencing is Alex Turner’s Dead Birds.

Dead Birds didn’t make a huge splash upon release and still remains somewhat under-seen more than 20 years later. The film does, however, have a small cult following and even managed to win over a few critics. Perhaps some of the appeal comes from the creatives involved. You’re Next scribe Simon Barrett penned the script for this genre mashup.

“They knew something was wrong”: Not Mark Sheppard, One Supernatural Actor Suspects Failing Health Frustrated Writer So Much They Wrote Her Out of the Show
Image
Supernatural is one of the few shows that maintained a strong relationship with its fans over fifteen seasons. The series starred Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki in the lead roles with several actors playing important supporting roles. However, some of the actors, including Mark Sheppard were done dirty by the writing, leading to abrupt exits from the hit series.

Several actors came and went over Supernatural‘s 15 seasons (Credit: Warner Bros).

However, one actress who appeared across multiple seasons admitted that the writers were forced to write her character out of the show because of her persistent health issues. Actress Rachel Miner, who played Meg Masters in the series, revealed that her health issues proved difficult for the writers to work around, leading to her character being killed off. Here is what Miner had to say about her Supernatural exit.

“He turned into a joke”: Supernatural Fans Reveal 5 Heinous Instances Eric Kripke Ruined The Show
Image
There are a lot of things that make Supernatural brilliant, but more often than not there are times when the show frustrates it’s adoring fans. Given that the show, like most things on The CW, is largely formulaic, it’s nigh impossible for some issues to not be recurring.

Supernatural | Credit: CW

These five instances are times when Supernatural really messed up a good thing, with fans wondering why these issues were not fixed in time until today. While Eric Kripke has proved himself to be a master of storytelling time and time again, it is difficult to overlook such glaring irritants in the story.

Real Reason Rachel Miner’s “Meg” Left Supernatural in Season 8 Has a Heartbreaking True Story Behind It
Image
The world of Supernatural is one of the most complex ones, involving several ‘supernatural’ entities and events that would leave even the most sane of us confused if one hasn’t been keeping track of it since the start. However, for fans of one of the longest-running series, it is precisely this complexity and its penchant for chaos that makes it as delightful and mesmerizing to watch.

While the Winchester brothers, aka Dean and Sam Winchesters, are the main draw of the show, Supernatural boasts a long list of memorable characters, both the nice and evil ones, that have now assumed the status of ‘fan-favorite.’ One of these characters is the demon Meg Masters.

Supernatural: The Best Episode From Each Of The Show's 15 Seasons
Image
Season 1 finale "Devil's Trap" sets up season 2 with suspenseful storyline and brilliant special effects. Season 2 premiere "In My Time of Dying" builds anticipation for the future with Dean's brush with death. Season 3's "Mystery Spot" showcases Sam's relentless efforts to save Dean, highlighting the importance of their survival.

Despite Supernatural coming to an end in 2020, the hit demon-hunting drama is still as popular as ever, and it's worth considering just what the best episode is from each of Supernatural's long 15-season run. Following the Winchester brothers, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles), Supernatural saw the siblings encounter several brilliant characters and monsters from 2005 to 2020. With Supernatural being the longest-running American live-action fantasy TV series, earning that title with season 11, it's no surprise that so many of the show's episodes have been rated so highly by both critics and audiences.

With 327 episodes under its belt, it's difficult to determine...

Jeepers Creepers 2 (2003) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Jeepers Creepers 2 was Written and Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Joseph Wilson, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Way back in 2001, Jeepers Creepers introduced us to a very effective movie monster who likes nothing more than to harvest and then eat the organs of human beings. The film, starring Justin Long and Gina Philips was hugely popular, and managed to rake in almost $60 million dollars internationally from a reported budget of just $10 million dollars. When you factor in the subsequent profit the film will have made from the various home entertainment revenue streams, you can see why it’s spawned three sequels, to date. The first movie took the horror landscape by surprise, so naturally the first sequel wouldn’t be far away, and before you could say ‘please don’t...

Bone Tomahawk: The Scariest Western Ever Made
Image
Though not the most popular of subgenres within film, horror westerns have been gaining decent, fan-favorite traction as of late. The earliest example is The Rawhide Terror (1934), directed by Bruce M. Mitchell and Jack Nelson from a script that was penned by the latter. From there, one other horror western from the earlier years of Hollywood remains worth noting today. Featuring Michael Pate as a vampire gunfighter, Curse of the Undead (1959) isn't held in high regard, or anything. But it is noted by historians as an early example of a western-horror film.

It would be several more decades before the subgenre truly took off with regard to worldwide popularity. Filmmakers pumped out B-movie-level products until a certain release in the 1980s, called Near Dark (1987). A neo-Western horror hybrid, it's one of the greatest films of its kind, seeing direction under the great Kathryn Bigelow from a script she co-wrote alongside Eric Red.

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be a streaming event for the first time on the Netflix YouTube channel. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute.

Among that group will certainly be Oscar winners Louise Fletcher, William Hurt and Irene Cara, plus nominees Angela Lansbury (a SAG life achievement recipient) and Melinda Dillon. Emmy champs Mary Alice, Kirstie Alley, Leslie Jordan, Ray Liotta, Stuart Margolin, Robert Morse and Barbara Walters.

Mickey Kuhn, Last Surviving ‘Gone With the Wind’ Cast Member, Dies at 90
Mickey Kuhn
Mickey Kuhn, a child actor whose long credits list in the 1930s and 1940s included “Gone With the Wind” and “A Streetcar Named Desire,” has died in Naples, Florida, at the age of 90, his wife, Barbara told reporters.

Kuhn was the last surviving credited cast member of “Gone With the Wind,” playing Beau Wilkes, the son of Ashley and Melanie Wilkes, who were played by Leslie Howard and Olivia de Havilland. Kuhn’s most well-known line comes near the end of the film, when Melanie is on her deathbed from pregnancy complications and Beau asks his father, “Where is my mother going away to? And why can’t I go along, please?”

Despite the mother-son relationship between their characters, Kuhn and de Havilland never appeared on-screen together and had never even met on set. In fact, he told the Naples Daily News in 2017 that his first meeting with de Havilland...

Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki in Supernatural (2005)
Laura Prudom: 'Supernatural' Finale Recap: Who Made It Out Alive?
Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki in Supernatural (2005)
Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 7, Episode 23 of The CW's "Supernatural," entitled "Survival of the Fittest."

Reviewing a season finale is very different from reviewing a singular episode, and "Supernatural" finales are more challenging than most. The end of a season has to tie up loose story threads from the entire season preceding it, while still leaving enough dangling to create a compelling jumping off point for next year. Thankfully, despite a few (okay, more than a few) lackluster episodes this season, I think that the season finale managed to course-correct in a way that makes me truly optimistic for Season 8. The last couple of episodes didn't build up much momentum going into the finale, in comparison with the stellar runs at the end of Seasons 1, 2, 4 and 5, but a finale still needs to stand on its own merits, and against the odds, I felt like...

Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki in Supernatural (2005)
'Supernatural' villain to return this season
Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki in Supernatural (2005)
Rachel Miner is to return to The CW's Supernatural. The Californication actress will reprise her role as the demon Meg Masters in a forthcoming episode, according to TVLine. Meg was originally played by Nicki Aycox from 2006 to 2008, with Miner assuming the role for the show's fifth season in 2009. The character was last seen in sixth season episode 'Caged Heat', in which she shared a kiss with angel Castiel (Misha Collins). Collins will also return to his Supernatural role later this year, with Castiel expected to reappear in the seventh season's (more)...

Rachel Miner Returning to Supernatural
The demon Meg Masters is one of our favorite recurring characters on "Supernatural", and it looks like she's going to appear at least once again in Season 7. Read on for the details.

TVLine got the scoop that Rachel Miner (the second actress to portray Meg, following Nicki Aycox's departure) will be returning at some point this season to the popular series. Details are scarce, however, including which episode(s) she'll be appearing in, but since we know Castiel is also coming back, and the last time we saw Meg she was helping him in his attempt to defeat Crowley, it isn't too much of a stretch to think they may appear together.

Rest assured that as soon as more info is available, we'll pass it on. For more in the meantime be sure to visit "Supernatural" on The CW.

Episode Recap: Supernatural - 1.22: "Devil's Trap"
Dean (Jensen Ackles) exclaims, "They've got Dad (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). As far as he knew Dad was only going to to meet with Meg (Nicki Aycox). He then says the demon's got Dad. They don't know how many are out there and only three bullets are left. Dean thinks they may be able to trade him for the Colt. Dean doesn't want to do this anymore and says they should "screw the job." Sam (Jared Padalecki) however now wants to do what Dad would want - "He would want us to keep going." Dean: "Quit talking about him like he was already dead." Dean's plan is to go for help and get Bobby (Jim Beaver) as they need help. Sam tells him demon's won't leave a trail, then mentions the Book of Solomon and how protective circles will work to trap a demon. Bobby claims there have been 3 or 4 demonic...

Episode Recap: Supernatural - 1.16: "Shadow"
Chicago, Illinois. A woman hears a noise in an alley and is later attacked at home. Shadows can be seen on the walls. One week later. Sam (Jared Padalecki) reads the paper as a manhunt continues for the killer. Dean (Jensen Ackles) comments how, "Dad made it fine without all these costumes." He feels like a high school drama dork. They dress in overalls. He recalls Sam in the play he did at school, Our Town, he was cute. There were no signs of a break in at the woman's home and the alarm is still on. Everything is in perfect condition, but Meredith (Melanie Papalia) was in pieces, could be the result of a wild animal. The ‘Supernatural’ just got sexy…
Hit Us series Supernatural has shown its audiences all manner of gruesome creatures and gory encounters with the paranormal – but it’s not all ugly. To celebrate the release of Supernatural: Season 6, Volume 1, available on DVD on 29th August, we’ve compiled a list of the five sexiest (human and non-human) men and women in the Supernatural series. Check out some of these irresistible heroes and villains; if evil was really this sexy, we’d all be in trouble!

The Men 1) Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles)

Sorry Sam, but in a showdown of who is the hottest Winchester brother, your older sibling wins hands down every time. He is of course the formidable and fearless hunter, Dean Winchester: he endured forty years in hell to save his brother, he’s probably one of the only humans feared (and lusted) by even the most powerful of the supernatural creatures, and he...

Katrina Bowden Is Down With the Sickness of 'Nurse 3D'
Hello Nurse!

Pray you have health insurance, 'cause Katrina Bowden has joined the cast of the new horror film, "Nurse 3D," according to Deadline.

The "30 Rock" beauty joins "Boardwalk Empire" star and barroom brawler Paz de la Huerta for the hardcore revenge tale about sexy nurses who lure unfaithful men to their violent demise.

The film has been enjoying some early buzz in horror circles thanks to de la Huerta posing nude for the poster (Warning: Nsfw!).

Katrina Bowden is on a role with this whole 3D horror movie thing, as she'll soon be seen exploring dangerous waters in "Piranha 3Dd" (remember, that's pronounced "Three-Double-Dee"), opening Nov. 23.

She'll be seen in merely two dimensions next April as Oz's trophy girlfriend in "American Reunion," the fourth (official) installment in the "American Pie" series.

Meanwhile, production on "Nurse 3D" begins later this month with a look toward a release date sometime in...

'Supernatural' preview: Sam can smell Meg's fear
There aren't many villains who have lasted longer than one episode of "Supernatural," but Meg  has been showing up every now and then for five seasons to cause trouble and then split before the Winchesters can figure out how to properly kill her.

In the upcoming episode "Caged Heat," Meg is back to her old tricks. She's still being portrayed by returning guest star Rachel Miner - though in the past she's appeared as Nicki Aycox and even Jared Padalecki when she possessed Sam in Season 2.

For once, Sam's lack of a soul is coming in handy. Meg kidnaps the Winchesters, but while Dean (Jensen Ackles) panics, Sam remains calm enough to see through Meg's act. He even finds the whole thing funny. "She can't do jack squat. She's totally screwed. Look at her, Dean. She's furious. If she could kill you, she'd have done it by now. She's running.

Dark Blue: TNT Series Cancelled; No Season Three
After two seasons on the air, TNT has cancelled Dark Blue. No season three for Carter Shaw and his Lapd team.

Dark Blue stars Dylan McDermott as the leader of an undercover unit whose members are so covert that some of the members of the department don't even know they're involved. The rest of the cast includes Omari Hardwick, Logan Marshall-Green, Nicki Aycox, and Tricia Helfer.

The cancellation of the cop drama doesn't come as much of a surprise. Despite a decline in ratings, the series was renewed for a second season last December. The second round of 10 episodes began airing in August and the numbers were worse than they'd been in year one.

Season two averaged a 0.6 rating in the key 18-49 demographic and 2.25 million total viewers. Those figures make the series the worst performer of...

[TV] Dark Blue: The Complete First Season
Ah, cop dramas, the TV staple that is now officially overdone. You can claim that there are varying flavors of the genre, and it’s true (renegade, by the book, investigative, etc.), but for each of those, there are about 5 different examples on television at any given time. Ever since 24 gave us Jack Bauer, the man with no limits, and The Shield gave us Vic Mackey, the man with a demagnetized moral compass, the genre of renegade cop shows has been looking for a way to create a show that still has edge. You won’t find it in any of the CSIs, and good luck squeezing even a drop of it out of The Closer or The Mentalist. The most recent attempt is Dark Blue, a show about officers who are so deep in cover that their files have been locked away from all but those with the highest...

DVD Review: Animals
Animals

Stars: Marc Blucas, Nicki Aycox, Eva Amurri, Naveen Andrews | Written by Craig Spector | Directed by Douglas Aarniokoski

Despite the fact it came on a shiny disc, was made in 2008 and stars actors from cult TV shows, I have to wonder if perhaps Animals fell through a hole in space/time from the late 80s early 90s and would perhaps feel more comfortable in a nice black Ex-Rental VHS box.

Jarrett (Blucas) has a blue collar job in a run down town. His boss is a jerk, he lives in a trailer, his car is falling apart, life pretty much sucks. His only refuge is the local bar run by his best friend, who idolises him, and a waitress who has a crush on him. Enter Nora (Aycox), a bad girl who comes into the bar one night. We can tell she’s a bad girl because she dresses like Madonna circa 1985, smokes,...

Exclusive: Dylan McDermott Talks Dark Blue Season 2
The actor who portrays Carter Shaw talks about the new season of this TNT drama, the addition of Tricia Helfer, why he's not directing an episode this season and much more.

Last summer, the cable network TNT added another series to its already-successful lineup of shows with the critically-acclaimed Dark Blue. The series was renewed for a second season last year and the new, 10-episode season is about to kick off on Wednesday, August 4 with a special two-hour season premiere at 9 Pm Et on TNT. The series stars Dylan McDermott as Lt. Carter Shaw, who heads up an elite undercover unit within the L.A.P.D., and I recently got a chance to chat with McDermott about the new season, including the show's latest casting addition, Battlestar Galactica beauty Tricia Helfer, and much more. Here's what McDermott had to say.

I was at the press conference before the show had premiered last year,...

TV Review: Tricia Helfer Brings Color to TNT Cop Drama ‘Dark Blue’
Chicago – TNT’s hit-and-miss cop drama “Dark Blue” returns tomorrow night, August 4th, 2010 with a great pair of episodes featuring the addition of the always-excellent Tricia Helfer of “Battlestar Galactica,” but the improvements aren’t merely in the supporting cast, as the first two hours of season two hint at the opposite of a sophomore slump. “Dark Blue” is still a deeply flawed program but the technical elements of the show have improved, the cast seems much more comfortable, and the writing is more tightly-paced. It may never be a great show, but it’s developing into a pretty damn good one.

Television Rating: 4.0/5.0

The set-up is simple enough for this Jerry Bruckheimer-produced program. Lieutenant Carter Shaw (Dylan McDermott) heads a group of undercover cops into a different case each week. It’s basically just a cable variation on the success that Bruckheimer has found on the networks with...

Dark Blue The Complete First Season DVD Review And Giveaway
I’m inclined to call Dark Blue “the best show you’re not watching,” except that I keep reminding myself that a decent number of you are. Enough of you to get it renewed for another season anyway. The inclination won’t go away though, and I’m forced to try and figure out why that is. All I can come up with is that maybe it is just the best show no one seems to be talking about.

Fronted by Dylan McDermott, the gritty crime drama follows a special unit of undercover officers who “technically don’t exist,” as the show is fond of saying. Moving more toward The Shield than the majority of cop shows, Dark Blue plays for atmosphere, and dancing on the line between right and wrong. On their own in many ways, while in more dangerous circumstances than most cops will ever see, the officers...

DVD Review: First Season of TNT Cop Drama ‘Dark Blue’
Chicago – TNT’s “Dark Blue” has theatrical caliber production values, tight editing, and impressive action set-pieces for a TV show. It also has cliched characters, hackneyed dialogue, and plots that stretch suspension of disbelief far past the breaking point. The strong performances and crisp pacing often make the cliches easier to bear but the first season features as many missed shots as direct hits.

DVD Rating: 2.5/5.0

Carter Shaw (Dylan McDermott of “The Practice”) has seen the dark side of police work. He manages a group of undercover officers and knows very few boundaries that can’t be crossed to bring down the bad guy. His team includes a family man (Omari Hardwick), a tough guy (Logan Marshall-Green), and a new recruit (Nicky Aycox).

Dark Blue: The Complete First Season was released on DVD on July 6th, 2010

DVD News: Animals (UK/R2)
Chelsea Films have announced the UK DVD release of Animals, based on the best-selling 1992 novel by John Skipp and Craig Spector – who co-scripted A Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child and are regarded by many as key pioneers of the late-1980s literary splatterpunk movement.

Directed by Douglas Aarniokoski (Highlander: Endgame) from a script adapted by Spector and starring Marc Blucas (Buffy The Vampire Slayer), Naveen Andrews (Lost), Nicki Aycox (Supernatural) and Eva Amurri (Californication), this graphically violent and boldly erotic reinvention of the werewolf/shapeshifter mythos will certainly appeal to horror fans who prefer the mature content of True Blood to the toothless, juvenile shenanigans of the Twilight saga.

Ever since his dreams of a promising football career were shattered by an unexpected injury in college, one-time local hero Jarrett (Blucas) has spent the subsequent years wasting away in his rapidly dying hometown working days in a variety of dead-end,...

Review: 'Dark Blue'
I have to admit to not being sure how much I like TNT’s Dark Blue. The series about an undercover unit operating in Los Angeles debuted last summer and for ten weeks my wife and I kept watching and wondering if it would get better. Slowly, and slyly, we found ourselves getting interested in some of the characters and kept watching.

The series opened with 3.5 million people watching the pilot episode but by the tenth episode, it shed just over half the viewers. Still, TNT had enough faith in the premise and Jerry Bruckheimer’s production savvy to bring it back for a second season starting August 4. Of note to ComicMix readers is the addition of Tricia Helfer to the cast as Special Agent Alex Rice.

Warner Home Video is showing a tad less faith by making the first season available tomorrow as an exclusive only at the WBShop.
