"In the Heat of the Night" TV show was a sequel to the movie and dealt with themes of racism and police brutality. Lead actor Carroll O'Connor won Emmy Awards for his roles in the show and "All in the Family." Several cast members, including Howard Rollins and Hugh O'Connor, tragically passed away after the show.
The In the Heat of the Night TV show featured a large ensemble cast of characters, though sadly, as the years have gone by there have been a number of deaths in the cast. This weekend marks the much-noted 50th anniversary of “The French Connection’s” release. “The Manor” perhaps inadvertently stirs memories of another William Friedkin joint, 1990 horror “The Guardian,” which was so disliked by the director that he omitted mentioning it in his otherwise fairly comprehensive memoirs. This addition to the second “Welcome to the Blumhouse” quartet of genre features likewise offers an evil tree-entity, to perhaps less campily absurd results — which is both a good and a bad thing.
Writer-director Axelle Carolyn’s second solo feature (following 2013’s ghost story “Soulmate”) provides a welcome starring vehicle for Barbara Hershey, who hasn’t had one in some years. But . When Marla Gibbs returned to set for ABC’s live remake of Norman Lear’s “The Jeffersons” and “All In the Family,” she never even looked at a script — she remembered her lines from playing Florence Johnston in the seminal sitcom nearly 40 years ago.
“When something changes your life, you never forget it,” Gibbs said during Saturday’s Fyc event held at Disney Studios in Burbank. “I never forgot the show, never forgot the lines, never forgot the cast and their lines, because everything about that show was very important to me.”
The actress’s cameo — which was kept secret until the special’s premiere — featured one particular line that Gibbs remembered was a smash during its original run. Marla Gibbs never won an Emmy for playing Florence Johnston on “The Jeffersons” for 11 seasons. But now she may get her chance.
Sony Pictures TV is submitting the cast of Wednesday night’s ABC special “Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s ‘All in the Family’ and ‘The Jeffersons'” for Emmy consideration — including Gibbs, who was a surprise, unannounced performer on the program, reprising her role as the Jeffersons’ maid.
“Live in Front of a Studio Audience” will compete in the outstanding variety special (live) race, which makes sense; the category is specifically for variety specials that are live, and the ABC event fits the bill.
But there is no category anymore for variety program performers, which poses a problem for events like “Live in Front of a Studio Audience.” Last year, NBC’s “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” successfully entered several of its stars in...

I must say, after October last year went pretty much horror free (Insidious: Chapter 2 came out mid-September), 2014 has its fair share of horror including The Conjuring prequel Annabelle, board game horror Ouija, Harry Potter horror Horns, CG Dracula horror in Dracula Untold and now Kevin Greutert's (Saw 3D, Saw VI) Jessabelle. Just today Lionsgate moved Jessabelle from a late August release to November 7. The film follows the title character (Sarah Snook), a young woman returning to her childhood home in Louisiana to recuperate from a horrific car accident when she comes face to face with a long-tormented spirit that has been seeking her return -- and has no intention of letting her escape. Mark Webber, David Andrews, Joelle Carter, Ana de la Reguera, Larisa Oleynik, Chris Ellis, Fran Bennett and Amber Stevens co-star. Lionsgate has released the first Jessabelle trailer for director Kevin Greutert’s (Saw 3D: The Final Chapter) horror thriller, which also marks the latest effort from Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge producer Jason Blum. Sarah Snook (Spirited) stars as a young woman recuperating from a terrible car wreck at her family home in Louisiana who finds herself haunted by a long-tormented spirit. Somewhat surprisingly, the film was written by Reno 911! co-creator/writer Robert Ben Garant. He appears to have made the genre switch quite successfully, as Jessabelle looks to be a promising spin on the haunted house/ghost story trope. Hit the jump to watch the Jessabelle trailer. The film also stars Mark Webber, Larisa Oleynik, David Andrews, Joelle Carter, Ana de la Reguera, Chris Ellis, Fran Bennett, and Amber Stevens. Jessabelle opens in theaters on August 29th. Having been bent over the proverbial barrel by Platinum Dunes’ groan-inducing desecration of the classic A Nightmare on Elm Street, we can at least turn our attention to tomorrow’s release of Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy to wash the foul taste of failure from our mouths.
I recently had the pleasure of talking to some of the folks involved with this documentary - directors Daniel Farrands and Andrew Kasch, and writer Thommy Hutson – and while we all wait patiently for the epic documentary’s release on May 4th, this little conversation should help tide you over while subsequently whetting your Freddy infused palate.
Dread Central: Never Sleep Again was a big labor of love for everyone involved. Where did your love of A Nightmare on Elm Street begin?
