Erykah Badu fans have spent the past 15 years waiting for a follow-up to her 2010 LP New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh), but it seems like they won’t have to wait much longer. In a new interview with Billboard, Badu revealed that she’s hard at work on a new LP with the Alchemist, a producer who has worked with everyone from Eminem and Earl Sweatshirt to Big Sean and Lil Wayne.

A week after news broke of Pharrell Williams and director Michel Gondrey’s decision to shutter their highly anticipated musical Golden for Universal from its scheduled May 9 release, Williams premiered another film in Atlanta. All Day I Dream About Is Sport is a short film made with London-born photographer/filmmaker Gabriel Moses for Division and Adidas, with the title, when made into an acronym, playing off the sneaker brand’s name. Described as a “visual love letter to West African culture steeped in the everyday experience of life in Senegal,” it’s nothing like Williams’ big screen musical, which starred Janelle Monae, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Halle Bailey. Rather, it puts a spotlight on the people of Dakar.
Those featured in the 20-minute film, which began its weeklong screening on Le Cinema Friday, span from an unborn child captured via ultrasound to the elderly to demonstrate the challenges of living.

The new documentary “Sly Lives, aka the Burden of Black Genius,” which focuses on the life and career of the brilliant but troubled musician Sly Stone and his group Sly and the Family Stone, is both a conventional documentary and an extremely unconventional one.
Like its predecessor, the Oscar and Grammy-winning “Summer of Soul” — which was also directed by the Roots’ Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and produced by Joseph Patel — “Sly Lives” works to incorporate the main story with a larger theme, in this case, as the subtitle indicates, the pressures that come with being both Black and a genius — pressures that have brought down more than one such genius and have led many of them toward self-destruction. That subtitle isn’t saying that geniuses aren’t created equally — but what happens after that genius manifests itself can be very different for minorities, particularly Black people.

Coi Leray has signed with Epic Records, The Hollywood Reporter reveals exclusively.
The rapper and singer, who also has new management with Cory Litwin at Range Media Partners, is set to drop an EP, What Happened to Forever, at midnight on Feb. 12.
“Epic is one of those labels who understands me as an artist and as a person, and I’m super appreciative of that,” Leray tells THR in announcing the deal. “They support me rather than try to tell me what to do, and that’s all an artist can ask for when it comes to signing with a major label.”
Prior to her move to the Sony Music subsidiary, Leray has released music via Republic Records and Island Records, both companies under the Universal Music Group umbrella.

Before attendees of the upcoming Met Gala become attached to any attire that might be deemed too outlandish or costume-driven, Anna Wintour and her fellow gala planners have decreed: It’s all about the tailoring — individually interpreted, that is.
On Tuesday morning New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, site of the May 5 Met Gala, announced both the event’s dress code and the host committee that will join the previously announced co-chairs of the starry evening, which raises funds for the museum’s Costume Institute. “Tailored for You” is the official dress code and reflects the theme of the exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which opens to the public on Saturday, May 10, and runs through Sunday, October 26. An exploration of Black style from the 18th century through present day, “Superfine” will guide exhibition attendees through a cultural and historical look at dandyism and the roles clothing and style have played in Black identities.

With Sundance wrapped up, much of February’s attention toward the world of cinema will be on Berlinale. This month certainly isn’t stacked for new releases, but there’s a handful of gems and highlights worth having on your radar.
11. Bring Them Down (Christopher Andrews; Feb. 7)
Premiering at TIFF last fall, the Barry Keoghan- and Christopher Abbott-led gritty revenge thriller Bring Them Down marks the directorial debut from Christopher Andrews. Christopher Schobert said in his TIFF review, “It’s occasionally compelling thanks to its haunting, almost otherworldly locations in Ireland. Mainly, though, what stands out are performances of the ever-intense Christopher Abbott, Nora-Jane Noone, and, most notably, Barry Keoghan. But the actors serve a drama that is relentlessly violent and thoroughly unpleasant. It’s a testament to these performers that they make so much of so little.”

Beyoncé won her first ever Album of the Year Grammy over the weekend, with her Cowboy Carter besting the likes of Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and André 3000. But it was Kendrick Lamar – who will be headlining the halftime show at Super Bowl Lix – who was the big winner, taking home five trophies out of just as many nominations. Others with multiple wins included St. Vincent, Charlie Xcx and Jon Batiste.
Lamar’s “Not Like Us” would win a couple of key Grammy awards last night: Record of the Year and Song of the Year, beating out everybody from Beyoncé herself to The Beatles. Our long national nightmare is over: Beyoncé finally won Album of the Year. The Grammys desperately needed her to win this award, so the night felt like a true celebration. Trevor Noah paid tribute to those impacted by the fires and surprised the audience with a performance by several artists, including John Legend and rock group Dawes, to open the 2025 Grammy Awards.
“This city has just been through one of the largest natural disasters in American history. Tens of thousands of people have lost their homes. Entire neighborhoods have been erased, schools, local businesses and entire communities have burned to the ground,” Noah said as he opens the ceremony from the Crypto.com arena in Los Angeles. “Thankfully, due to the heroic efforts of firefighters, the fires have now been contained, and despite all the devastation, the spirits of the city has emerged. Neighbors who had never spoken before are helping each other.”

André 3000 will not be attending today’s Grammy Awards ceremony, the OutKast alum announced Saturday. The news comes after the rapper and singer-songwriter received a surprise nomination for the coveted Album of the Year award, as well as nods for Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Instrumental Composition.
The musician, who is nominated for his debut solo album, did not cite a reason for skipping the awards but referenced Los Angeles in his message to fans, sharing his hope that the city will “rebound” following the recent devastating wildfires.
“Unfortunately, I’m not able to attend the GRAMMYs tomorrow but some of the New Blue Sun musicians, friends and supporters will be in attendance,” he wrote in an Instagram text post. “Our album was conceived and recorded in Los Angeles with the spirit of openness and creative collaboration. We hope that the rebound of Los Angeles is swift and renewing.

A loving yet tough-minded documentary about the legacy of Sly Stone, Questlove’s Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius) has more on its mind than charting the rise and fall of another troubled icon. As its title suggests, the film wants to use Stone’s life and career as a jumping-off point for a larger examination of the double standards often levied by society against Black artists deemed “geniuses.” While Sly Lives! makes a strong argument for raising the question, it never fully grapples with the answer. Ultimately, though, it’s on firmer ground when painting a picture of its subject’s specific and one-of-a-kind genius.
Questlove’s rendering of Stone’s inspiring and tragic story is as vibrant and pulse-pounding as could be hoped for. An East Bay-raised music prodigy who could play almost every instrument and was arranging and performing in his family’s church at an early age,...

Bill Maher Pitches New Grammy Categories: “Best Song That Trump Got Sued for Playing at His Rallies”
If the Recording Academy is listening, Bill Maher has some ideas for new Grammy categories.
With the 67th annual Grammy Awards just days away, the comedian took a moment during the latest episode of HBO’s Real Time to suggest some new creative categories for music’s biggest night.
While the Grammys typically only air a handful of top categories during the televised ceremony, such as album, record and song of the year, dozens of more awards are handed out during a premiere ceremony earlier in the day.
“We’re very excited because we are the award kings out here and it is Grammys weekend,” the host quipped at the beginning of the segment. “And it’s going to be a great weekend.”
After sharing the actual names of some of the non-televised categories, Maher decided he would propose some new music categories that he brainstormed. Although, in all honesty,...

As Linda Martell now famously said in the intro to “Spaghettii” on Beyoncé‘s Cowboy Carter, “Genres are a funny little concept, aren’t they?” Music has evolved drastically in the last couple of decades, largely due to the internet. For years the industry has used genre to categorize and market music to different audiences. But as the years progress and music is more readily available than ever before, many genres have been evolving at a rapid pace, taking from each other in a way we have frankly never seen before. And the Grammys — music’s biggest industry peer-group honors — are finally catching on.
The first Grammys, hosted in 1959, were divided by genre right off the bat, including specific awards for jazz, country/western, R&b. This isn’t a problem: after all, without genre divisions, some music might be overlooked — Latin, R&b, and hip-hop — by a mostly white,...

Beyoncé, Sabrina Carpenter, and Chappell Roan will be among the top winners at the 2025 Grammys on Sunday, according to the official Gold Derby odds.
The night’s top prize, Album of the Year, will finally go to Beyoncé, based on our latest projections. She has lost four times before, often controversially, to the point that her husband, Jay-Z, called out the Recording Academy onstage while accepting his Dr. Dre Global Impact Award at last year’s show. When her Lemonade lost to Adele‘s 25 in 2017, even Adele admitted in her acceptance speech that Beyoncé deserved the prize. But beware: Beyoncé was the frontrunner in our odds the last three times she lost, and this year she has especially tough competition from Billie Eilish (Hit Me Hard and Soft) and Roan (The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess). See the full category odds below.

The Los Angeles wildfires may have muted the music business’ usual weeklong celebration leading to the 67th annual Grammy Awards, but maybe that’s served to shine a brighter spotlight on music’s biggest night and its nominated artists? In any case, this year’s competition is (Sasha) fierce! When Beyoncé struts into the Crypto.com Arena on Feb. 2, she does so with the most nominations, 11, including three in the top general categories — album, record and song of the year — a feat shared by Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter (the last two are also up for best new artist). Will Beyoncé finally win album and/or record, two trophies she doesn’t yet have in her case, despite being the winningest artist in Grammy history? Will Swift add a back-to-back Aoty to her collection (this would be her fifth!)? Or will Charli Xcx have everyone seeing lime green?...

After winning the Oscar for Best Documentary for his feature debut, Summer of Soul, Amir “Questlove” Thompson is returning to filmmaking with his sophomore feature, Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius). While the concept behind his second film might seem like a more straightforward biography, Questlove brings such a refreshingly deep approach to his subject that the result is utterly fantastic.

Sly Lives! tells the story of Sly and the Family Stone — one of the most influential groups of all time in Black music history and music history as a whole. Questlove already got a taste of Sly and the Family Stone’s story in Summer of Soul, ending his first film with their performance at the Harlem Cultural Festival, but in this film, he dives deep into the group and its frontman’s story and legacy.

Sly Stone, founder, frontman and namesake of Sly and the Family Stone, has deserved to be the subject of a documentary since the heyday of his eponymous, chart-topping, mixed-gender, racially integrated 1960s and ‘70s funk band. After more than 30 years out of the spotlight — and another 10 in which his personal and legal troubles sadly dominated more headlines than his music — Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s “Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius)” aims to rightfully contextualize his artistic legacy.
The film bows at Sundance Jan. 23.
Appropriately, the documentarian and fellow musician chronicles Stone’s musical achievements, the cultural barriers he broke and the ups and downs of his tumultuous private life. But Questlove unexpectedly leans heavier on his title’s parenthetical addendum in order to illuminate some deeper truths about the challenges of stardom (especially for Black artists) that may have started with Stone, but which still persist today.

“Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius)” is a dazzling and definitive funk-pop documentary. It’s the second “jawn” directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, and he has leveled up from his first, “Summer of Soul” — though that lyrical-flashback-to-1969-in-Harlem concert film, in its way, was beautiful. In “Sly Lives!,” Questlove confronts the life and legacy of Sly Stone, investigates it, holds it up to the light, tears it apart, and puts it back together like the bravura mixmaster he is. Sly’s first hit was “Dance to the Music,” and Questlove wants you to dance to the music, to feel it and think it, know how it was made, and hear how its vibrations went out into the world. This is a movie made by a maestro musician and D.J.-turned-master director.

There’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in Summer of Soul, Questlove’s rousing documentary about the Harlem Cultural Festival, when Sly Stone turns away from the microphone to look at his bandmates. It’s the late 60s and Sly & the Family Stone are performing their hit “Everyday People” to an enthused, multigenerational crowd. Attendees sway and clap, so attentive that they seem possessed. But there’s something particularly special about the way Sly spins around, faces his bandmates and starts dancing to their music. It’s as if they — the seven members of this dazzling funk group — are the only ones in the park and Sly, an exceptional artist tortured by fame’s unruly demands, can do anything.
